81  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: MTGox will be Hacked again on: January 07, 2012, 10:06:54 PM
MtGox is not Bitcoin. If MtGox is hacked, people are buying their bitcoins anywhere else. There are dozens of platforms there.

Even if all coins from MtGox would be stolen or even destroyed, bitcoins will be even more expensive after that!
82  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How can I see my Bitcoin Balance or someone .. on: January 07, 2012, 10:02:10 PM
You can't see anyboy elses balace because one can have generate an unlimited number of bitcoin addresses for each wallet.dat.
You can see in blockexplorer every bitcoin which moved to which address, but you cannot know which address belongs to which wallet.dat.

For example I have a wallet.dat but I generate address a, b and c. If I move money between a and b or c, then my wallet.dat still have the same amount of money since all these are my own adressen. But for another person which only knows my adress a it looks as if I transferred my money to another account.

Robbers and Murderers and even Pirates are eating bread. They even do it every day! Forbid bread! This stuff must be illegal!!!
84  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Using MtGox as a wallet? on: January 07, 2012, 09:54:41 PM
As far as I know, MtGox like most all bitcoin trading sites doesn't charge fees for depositing and withdrawing bitcoin.
Note that if MtGox gets hacked again (like it happened half a year ago) all your coins are lost.
It is better to store them on your HD and have a properly encrypted backup of your wallet.dat on another PC or on the Internet.

I don't like such intermediary companies for transferring money, especially if they are new.
I only use SEPA, it is the most safe and it doesn't cost anything.

Tradehill doesn't provide SEPA right now, but MtGox.com and Intersango.com do.
88  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Intersango Deposit Time and Support on: December 08, 2011, 05:02:36 PM
Hi,

my experience is that the Intersango team normally is highly responsive to questions and they have great support.
Maybe you had bad luck and they were on holiday Smiley

Depositing money on intersango usually takes long time, I experienced 3 or more business days.

If the hashrate drops, then the system automatically reduces difficulty which will in turn mining more lucrative. That way, the hashrate will never drop doen to dangerous levels, but instead will regulate itself so that approx. 6 blocks per hour can be processed.

There also will be no transaction traffic problem, because in the future more and more people won't use a full client but instead a thin client which doesn't need the complete transaction history.
92  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: HOWTO: create a 100% secure wallet on: December 05, 2011, 03:36:13 PM
The current version of the bitcoin client provides wallet encryption. This should be secure enough for normal users, given that you use a secure password and doesn't store it on your pc somewhere.
But at the end - if a hacker had access to your pc - may it remote or physical, he could also install keyloggers or whatever.
The ultimate security would be to use a computer for bitcoin only and use another pc for any other task, so there is not chance for malicious software to get in touch with your wallet.

Make sure you use the newest client and disable all firewalls.

Mostly agreed with your points. A few thoughts however; why would it be bitcoin that succeeds and not some other crypto currency? Particularly one backed by a large company (think apple, MS, amazon,..) , or god forbid, a government (Greece anyone? Cheesy). Bitcoin could end up being the next netscape/altavista/icq.

A Crypto Currency backed by a company? The currency would then stand and fall with that company. The big point on bitcoin is that it doesn't depend on anything.
There are no dentral points or servers, just independent p2p clients. There is no company or single developer, it's open source.

There is not single point of access which could provide access to manipulation or surveillance. Even if bitcoin would be declared illegal, nobody could simply shut if off.

You can also try Intersango.com, they still provide SEPA deposits.

Hooray! I will paint chunks of lead with sparkling color and get rich! That I didn't think of that before!!!

Note that there are some people which have another opinion. One of them is, that the value comes from the fact that there is fewer gold on this world than tree stumps. Gold doesn't grow, you know..  Grin
