21  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Announcing GekkoScience's new USB stick miner, the aptly-named NewPac on: September 28, 2019, 01:24:22 PM
Thanks Sidehack!
Poor communication on my part
I can't run beyond one hub is how it should have read
I limit 6 six sticks per hub with two USB fans in my configuration of the hubs with the Newpacs
The Pi 4 freaks out if I plug in more hubs including the one with the two 2-Pacs while the first one is running
If I boot with all hubs attached, cgminer boots and freezes, in turn freezing the Pi4
I was able to exit once and the exit screen was full of kernel panics
I can copy the folder onto a usb key but unsure how to recompile with the Pi4
As per your previous suggestion, I am running the Newpacs at a higher rate (300mhz) and they run perfectly
Heat sink temps are around 88F
All help appreciated, thanks again!  Smiley

@vh
Just purchased a Pi 4 to run the 18 Newpacs & two 2-pacs on 4 Gekko hubs but having some grief
Git pull & install was easy as with the 3b+ as outlined from Page 1 on the other main forum
However I have problems running beyond 6 Newpacs on one Gekko hub
Freezing, kernel panics, etc
The Pi 4 setup is from Canakit & the 4gb version
Is it possible to download the cgminer from around March 07, 2019 for installation on the Pi4 to try?
3b+ back online hashing perfectly with that version.

Get a Gekkoscience hub and a good power supply to be future proof
I'm using four of them to run 18 Newpacs and two 2-Pacs 24/7 on one Pi3b+
My Newpac's are very comfortable at 250Mhz and 2 USB fans per hub
Hashing at the same rate as an Antminer S5 at 1/4 the power use   Grin

CGMiner showing 9.98T this morning   Shocked

When the halving happens is this number affected?

Thanks sidehack!  Cheesy

@ merlin - 141W here using 18 NewPac's at 250Mhz and two 2-Pac's at 100Mhz for 1.043T/hs. I use two Arctic USB fans on each GS hub. One RP3+ is runnnig all four GS hubs using a passive USB 2 hub to hook up everything. Easy on the ears and the power bill....
27  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Announcing GekkoScience's new USB stick miner, the aptly-named NewPac on: June 15, 2019, 04:11:02 PM
Great info, thanks. The hashing numbers haven't changed so the 4 port hub will not be powered

@ vh regarding CGminer and GS devices
Does one instance of CGminer running many Newpacs equate to one device to the CGminer itself internally?
Or is it the string of chips that determine one device?
The pool sees it as one miner o/c
I'm assuming the R606 is more powerful & efficient with 12 chips in series as compared to 2 chips in series times 6 on one GS hub
Does the mixing of Newpacs & 2-Pacs on the same GS hub impact performance on hashing or should they be run separately with another Pi? The numbers look fine

Hello,

can someone please tell me how to run multiple instance of cgminer at the same time? I'm running 1 newpac along with 4 2pacs and they don't seem to be getting along. I can't get all of them to run at the same time, what usually happens is that one of the 2pacs is immediately detected as "0 chips found" on cgminer. After multiple attempts of taking that stick out and plugging it back in, cgminer finally detects it. I'd be happy if things stopped at that, but usually a few hours later I get the same error message "0 chips found" on one or multiple 2pacs.

Are you using a GekkoScience hub?  I'm running eighteen Newpacs & two 2-pacs on GS hubs with no issues using one RPi

Free is obviously not cheap enough.

Does it matter if the 4 port USB hub have external power with 3 GekkoScience hubs plugged into it?
The 4 port hub is plugged into a RPI3+
Seems to be a some issues with 3rd party hubs back powering the RP
I unplugged the 4 port hub to let it hash overnight with the eighteen NP's
Nothing else will be plugged into the 4 port hub
I don't want to damage the PP or the GS hubs

Added 6 more NewPacs and GS hub today, thanks MFB!

18 NewPacs and 3 GS hubs running with 6 Arctic USB 92mm fans.

Raspberry Pi 3+ with Cicero USB2 powered hub added.

Running at 250Mhz and heatsink temp is average 79F.

Asic Boost on using Ck's pool, hashing is within spec for all sticks.

1.02 T/hs for 112W at the wall plug.

@sidehack

The Raspberry Pi 4 will be coming out with four USB 3 ports. Safe to say this may be a problem? A review of the prototype can be found on Youtube.

One week S9i rental in place
Six more NewPacs on the way to go full time here
Not a lot but better than lottery tickets

... The fact that it worked at all with the Pi Zero was surprising let alone at the same speed.

The Pi's seem to prefer a wired connection for best performance from my experience.  I think the Pi's wireless component shares some of the resources as the USB ports also. My two R808's maxed out a Pi 3 so additional 2Pacs were run on a separate Pi 3. The Pi 3+ never exceeds 12% resource utilization in Raspbian with the 12 NewPac's.

Someone here might have better insight into how the Pi handles resources. I am going to try three GS hubs and 18 NewPacs on the 3+ but have another Pi should the USB ports be overwhelmed. A/B enabled should allow it to work, fingers crossed.

Running 12 Newpac's here on 2 GS hubs using and RP 3+, no issues at 250mhz. Both plugged into the Pi3+ directly with a usb mouse and wireless (usb) keyboard.

Each hub as 2 Arctic 92mm USB fans plugged in for cooling. Temperatures are approx. 80F at the heatsink using the temp gun recommended by Philipma1957. Room temp is 72F.

Power supply is Corsair 550T Gold. Power consumption is around 75W max.

I have to stress that the NewPac's and GS hubs are a perfect combo. I've ordered a third setup from MFB because these work so well together.

Kudos to Sidehack, great products.

This doesn't make a lot of sense but I'll post anyway
Purpose is to obtain 12 more NewPac's & 2 GekkoScience hubs and add another Pi
Backed up my Kingston 8gb class 4 SD card from the current Pi 3+
Flashed img to a new Sandisk Class 10 card and installed to test on the same Pi
Difficulty performance on pool.ckpool more than doubled
Average was 425 difficulty and went up to 1100 or so
Frequency of NewPac's is set to a comfortable 250mhz with 682Gh/s in total with A/B
Possible change in the pool itself or traffic could be part of this I assume, coincidence  Huh
Pi connection is wired to the router directly

Cool

My 12 NewPaks running at 300Mhz on 2 GS hubs just registered Best Share of 642M here on Solo

Previous Best Share was 600M with an S9 rental

Still far away but getting closer

419Mining, LLC states in all sales that active cooling is recommended even at stock speeds.

Bear in mind, a simple desk fan can be considered active cooling, most people even use something as simple as this USB fan: https://www.ebay.com/itm/254154810314.

I use two of these on my GekkoScience hubs running 6 NewPacs at 200 Mhz

Overkill but if one fan fails, I'm still OK

Nice and cool & very quiet Cheesy
