301  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do we deal with an internet blackout? on: December 01, 2012, 10:05:36 PM
The Internet was invented precisely because it can not be blacked out. Though if you are talking about blacking out access to the Internet, then I guess that's a possibility. In that case, bitcoin transaction will be impossible.

Yes, agreed. But let's talk about the specific methods of changing our mode of operation. What would you do to continue transacting/protecting your bitcoin? The average person only knows the internet that they pay a monthly fee for through an ISP.

EDIT: Perhaps a basic "how to" guide would be useful so dummies like me could prepare in advance.  Tongue
302  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / How do we deal with an internet blackout? on: December 01, 2012, 09:49:03 PM
I know there's been some discussion on this at various sources but what are the latest strategies to prepare for, and deal with this type of scenario? Specifically, what are the specific actions that one can take so he can continue to transact with bitcoin?

303  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Ripple a Bitcoin Killer or Complementer? Founder of Mt Gox will launch Ripple on: November 30, 2012, 06:30:51 AM
People also shouldn't worry about the energy consumption associated with mining.  I believe as the reward tapers off, we'll enter into a phase where many entities buy mining hardware for the express purpose of sitting idle until and unless needed to thwart an attempted attack on the network.  There will also be miners that get paid a subsidy from other businesses to ensure Bitcoin transactions remain free or very cheap (ensuring that mining without subsidy is a money losing endeavor).  There may even be treaties involved to negotiate how much mining power different entities apply and keep in reserve in order to simultaneously protect the integrity of the network and not needlessly waste energy.

Bitcoin mining energy consumption is miniscule compared to the loss of human life and loss of productivity caused by existing national currencies and their management teams of killers, thieves and kidnappers. If bitcoin would replace this bankster money the quality of human life would flourish to a level never before seen and the gain in productivity would dwarf its energy cost. it can't come soon enough.

304  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Big Shots in favor of Bitcoin on: November 29, 2012, 05:19:15 PM
I think that most "big shots" will not comment on bitcoin because it is something they cannot control, did not create, or simply just fear.

i agree it is affecting his professionalism.

I disagree, "professionalism" is just a perspective you gained where ? and does what ? From my point of view you just said "He is different so don't take him serious and ignore him ...". Isn't that what people usually mean when they use that word ?

But yha love his shows, latest show "don't buy in to a Asset (bonds) that is at a all time high".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZr9G7s2zBQ

professionalism, in terms of reporting print and tv media, is a perspective i've gained from reading all the "popular" sources which are considered the "professionals" by most likely a majority of people. what i really meant was, i didn't know he use to be a comedian, and the remarks like the sheep noises make him seem more amerature-ish than say cnbc, cnn, fox, or headline here in the states. o'reilly can't be too far off tho  Cheesy

and hes different so all the more reason one should take him serious and respect his thoughts.

i agree his show is great. i watch it all the time

I guess you missed all the shows where he talks about Bitcoin, hence penning this thread.

309  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What will the state do? on: November 22, 2012, 06:34:42 AM
If bitcoin takes hold how are they going to able to fund their police state or military industrial complex to go after bitcoin ?

If they were really all powerful the silk road wouldnt be out there giving them the finger right now  Smiley
Sales Tax on merchant nodes, property tax, luxury tax, capital gains taxes (enforced by exchangers), and a variety of other ways they can tax you (EVEN WITH Bitcoin)....

People who are serious about Bitcoin need to stop saying that they aren't going to be paying any taxes...

I will admit that it will be much more difficult for a state authority to abuse a system like Bitcoin, but saying we're not paying taxes!

It sends the wrong message, and only shows you are living in pure fantasy land when you say "they can't touch me", when really they can...

Here's how I see it going down:

1. As the State (pick your State) spirals down into inevitable default, confidence in the State deteriorates even further.

2. For economic/survival reasons more people move into the informal economy - bitcoin helps them and helps protect them from confiscation, inflation, etc.

3. Tax revenue drops off and cash-starved States are forced to either shrink (cut costs), increase taxes, or inflate at a faster rate.

4. Those who move into the shadow economy - and protect their savings with bitcoin - will be less affected than those who don't and they will be able to bear the increased tax burden better than their non-bitcoin neighbors.

5. As the poor economy worsens, and the tax burden becomes too great for the non-bitcoiners, they will go into the streets in open revolt - thus creating somewhat of a check against State expansion - all while pushing more people into the informal economy and bitcoin.

6. At this point the State either becomes brutally totalitarian or shrinks dramatically. To prevent the former it is imperative that the ideas of liberty and sound economics are preached far and wide because, in the end, it is ultimately a war of ideas.

Here is one of my favorite quotes:

“Economics is sometimes thought of as a very dry and dismal subject dealing with dusty tomes of statistics about material goods and services.  Economics is not a dry subject.  It is not a dismal subject.  It is not about statistics.  It is about the human life.  It is about the ideas that motivate human beings.  It is about how men act from birth until death.  It is about the most important and interesting drama of all – human action.

“The main objective of economics is to substitute consistently correct ideas and actions for the contradictory ideas and actions inherent in popular fallacies…

“We all want things that are not necessarily essential, but we always choose those actions which we think will best improve the situation from our viewpoint.  This means that the ideas that men hold determine their choice of actions.  This means that the most important thing in the world is ideas.”

310  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [BLOG] - The Full Faith and Credit of Wikipedia on: November 22, 2012, 05:42:18 AM
I agree with others who say that it's time to give up on trying to get Wikipedia to accept B donations.

We all know the real reasons why they don't do it.

Simply don't send them any support! I am sure they will be fine with fiat donations from others, and our conscience should be clear when we continue to use it for free!  Grin

Trying to convince them to accept it, makes us look desperate and needy.

As i've said before, if Bitcoin is big-enough idea to succeed, it's big enough to speak for itself now. We should just use it and improve it, and stop begging others to accept it.

When the fiat house of cards implodes in the right places, my bet is many entities will change their mind about B.

At that time, the ones that did not support B these days, will not get a satoshi or any other currency from me either...  Tongue

Well put.  +1

+2 Although I think we need to keep putting out articles like Erik's to call out organizations who say one thing and do another.

Great article.
312  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Easywallet.org - web based wallet, iPhone/Android clients with QR Codes on: November 20, 2012, 08:06:18 PM
That sounds good. EasyWallet.org has great functionality and a great GUI. I believe your currency pricing uses a weighted average? This has thrown off a few of my transactions because it's not taking the latest price. I, personally, would prefer a real time price when the wallet shows exchange rates. Just a suggestion.

Thanks.
313  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Easywallet.org - web based wallet, iPhone/Android clients with QR Codes on: November 20, 2012, 04:08:46 PM
Why the high fees for holding over 12 btc? Are you just trying to limit the amount of bitcoin that people keep on their EasyWallet ? If so, 12% annually is a very effective deterrent.

315  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Voluntaryist.com now accepting bitcoins! on: November 20, 2012, 12:17:29 AM
If you haven't read the short essay A Way To Be Free - by Robert LeFevre I highly recommend it:

http://centerforselfrule.org/a-way-to-be-free/

In my opinion, Robert LeFevre was one of the greatest "freedom philosophers" of our time.

316  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Voluntaryist.com now accepting bitcoins! on: November 20, 2012, 12:07:40 AM
I'm a voluntaryist and didn't know it.

How does voluntaryism differ from anarcho-capitalism?

They are basically synonymous although Voluntaryism emphasizes mutually voluntary relationships. "Voluntaryist" also sounds better when introducing it to new people whereas anything with "anarchy" in it will tend to work against you. For a personal philosophy I prefer "Autarchy/Autarchism" because it takes Voluntaryism to the next level of individual development - it focuses on "self-rule" and "self-mastery. See: http://centerforselfrule.org

In my opinion, here's the scale of "freedom philosophies" in order of their development:

1. Autarchism (self-rule/self-mastery)
2. Voluntaryism (peaceful relationships)
3. Anarcho-capitalism (which is really just unadulterated Capitalism)
4. Anarchy (without ruler)

319  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Time for a renewed push to get EFF to accept Bitcoins? on: November 16, 2012, 04:38:05 PM
These organizations ignore bitcoin at their own peril. In my opinion EFF "wussed out". Isn't their mission something about protecting electronic freedom? Like a previous poster already said, I've lost a lot of respect for EFF. Yes, they do a lot of great things and I am thankful for that but rejecting bitcoin was a major fail.

320  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: WordPress.com accepts Bitcoins on: November 16, 2012, 04:25:02 PM
I would not be surprised if their knee jerk reaction was: "Remove bitcoin from your site, or else we will freeze your PayPal accounts"
A move like that would have a very high potential of backfiring.

Wordpress has a big soapbox, and PayPal needs Wordpress more than Wordpress needs PayPal.

This is extremely important. WordPress is synomous with freedom of speech. This allows us to reframe the Bitcoin debate from being used to buy drugs to ensuring our freedom of speech. We saw how fast the Internet rallied against SOPA, PIPA, etc. Bitcoin will get a lot more public support for freedom of speech. Coupled with the everyone with a soapbox using Bitcoin to pay for their soapbox ... I cannot really think of a more important propellant for public Bitcoin support.

PayPal recently fired 325 employees and 120 independent contractors. If they tried to freeze WordPress they would encounter a fury from the Internet like SOPA did. I imagine a lot of bloggers would boycott Paypal out of spite.

The "bitcoin enables electronic freedom of the word press" angle on this that WP have gone out of their way to highlight kind of makes EFF lawyers look like yellow muppets for not getting out in front of ... maybe this will give them some spine?

LOL agreed...
