41  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Centralized Exchanges, you are on your own on: January 07, 2022, 05:24:39 AM
Dear Devcoin community,

As the head of Devcoin Foundation, and lead developer of Devcoin I should inform you the following:

I have been trying for the last 2 years to list Devcoin in centralized exchanges, we had many great opportunities but never enough funding. I did a last try recently to finally understand that "listing" is a business only for the exchanges and not for a project like Devcoin. They charge huge amounts of money only to use those same funds for providing liquidity! From now on, any listing effort should come from exchanges themselves, if they want to make money with OUR project, they should invest their own money. The Devcoin project only cooperates with individuals and organizations willing to work as hard as we do, risks included.

Thank you!

Can we still use the old client because it still works like a charm?

Yes, you can, but it will not last long, we are enforcing https next round, if your wallet is too old, it will not be able to sync.

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED to update your wallets

WHAT'S NEW?

- HTTPS support for downloading receiver files

Just that? Hey! It took 2 long years and a few pandemic waves to arrive to this point. Now pay the favor back by updating your wallets!

WARNING: I am pretty sure the code only supports 1/5ths of a share, trying to make it do 1/10ths would probably require a rebuilding of the actual node core software as well as maybe some modifying of the scripts we use to build the distribution files.

So file custodians be aware the files I just prepared might not actually work, we might have to re-do the file-preparing using 1/5ths of a share as I am pretty darn sure that is the smallest granularity we coded in from the start.

-MarkM-

Thanks for the heads up Mark! This is how we are fixing the issue:

1. Increase shares from 200 to 400
2. Duplicate assigned shares to all receivers (i.e: 1/10ths to 1/5ths)
3. Redistribute remaining 1/5ths to ensure the new receiver file is paying 1/5ths (tricky part)

For #3 (and after several tests) I found additional 3/5ths of a share needed to be distributed somewhere, so I did as follows:

- Increase Satoshi0x's Marketing duty shares from 1/5th to 2/5ths (well done Dan!)
- Increase develCuy's Earning Factotum shares from 1/5th to 3/5ths (dude you're keeping me very busy!)

I'll give up (again) some fractions of shares in the future, whenever we need to onboard new people.

Changes are ready to deploy. Go go Devcoin!

- develCuy

The change above should wait till round 123 since current round 122 is already minting under the rules of original receiver_122.csv, the only change is nominal. I changed 1/10ths by 1/6ths to reflect the actual max granularity and surprisingly the sum of all shares when using 1/6ths is 200! Btw, Devcoin blockchain keeps running well, it is just the block explorer that needs the right receiver_122.csv.

This is what I get from getinfo ATM:
Code:
{
"version" : 80700,
"protocolversion" : 70001,
"walletversion" : 60000,
"balance" : 0.00000000,
"blocks" : 488965,
"timeoffset" : 0,
"connections" : 4,
"proxy" : "",
"difficulty" : 26172217.34253749,
"testnet" : false,
"keypoololdest" : 1542223662,
"keypoolsize" : 101,
"paytxfee" : 0.00000000,
"errors" : "",
"round" : 122
}

In order to fix your node or wallet, please  just shutdown it, delete receiver_122.csv from "receiver" folder and start your node/wallet again. It should start syncing just like my wallet did.

NOTE: In case you are running an old Devcoin version, please download the file manually from: https://receiver01.devcoin.org/receiver_122.csv

Go go Devcoin!

46  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / 23 ongoing shares disolved and payroll reduced by 90% on: October 15, 2021, 03:09:28 AM
UPDATE 2021-10-18: Payroll reduction on round 122 is 40% due to limitations on Devcoin source code. We are trying to achieve the 90% reduction on round 123.

Dear Devcoin community,

This is an announcement I had in the oven for so long. Part of the reason is that things slowed down so much due to the pandemic, yet not the complete answer. Free Software projects move along their community and leadership, the last one being my call. If you are familiar with driving cars, you know that the break is used more often than the accelerator pedal. Devcoin is ethical by purpose, one that I truly and deeply believe, but nothing is perfect so leadership should make some decisions to move the project forward.

The decision I'm taking this time is to reduce the number of ongoing shares from 223 to 200, it increases the amount of Devcoins minted for every ongoing share every round by about 10%. YET, we still have our markets in comma, so we are basically incentivizing hodling and inactivity for too much time. Rather I prefer to incentivize more active participation from A-Team (Devcoin staff), since we have several areas that need help, other than just hodling for passive income. Isn't that ethical?

For the reasons above, I reduced ongoing shares for staff by 90%, it means that incentive for all roles is now one tenth (1/10) of a share starting on round 122. The immediate effect is that Devcoin inflation is lower and miners are receiving a higher income, they should since network hashrate reduced by 99% this year (remember that we don't have any blockchain without miners).

I kindly ask everybody, specially in A-Team, to follow the example from Cpol (Qtera), the guy doesn't earns a single ongoing share, yet he is accountable with his role within our DevTeam, he is always there whenever I need to test a new build, he does better reporting than many paid senior devs I know in my day job. Cpol does it all for a different model of incentive, get paid for actual achievements, when things are really done! No money upfront. Please don't take me wrong, I don't plan to change our current ongoing model, I only want to incentivize onboarding more people like Cpol and to awake the power from A-Team, together we could move Devcoin from under 1 sat to 10 sats in no time. Time will tell if I'm wrong and you'll then blame me for failure.

Final words here: No matter how low our chances are, success is always part of the possibilities!

Go go Devcoin!

I thought that was a great idea when Unthinkingbit created Devcoin, it's sad to see he left
Is it still maintained? Is there some need for help?

Hey, jack, long time.  I might have to take over as lead dev but I’m so busy with other projects I’m not sure yet.  Otherwise things are moving along.  Feel to help out in anyway you can.  Hey, can you make a chicken pot pie?   Grin Kiss

Thanks @drmutz! I'd love to see your feedback about the official Dockerfile: https://github.com/devcoin/core/blob/master/examples/Dockerfile

Ha! I didn't know there was one.  Learn something new everyday :-)

Looks like whoever wrote the official Dockerfile knows more about Docker and Devcoin than I do, but it might be a bit overwhelming for a n00b.

Perhaps a n00b would have an easier time starting with my edition all the while having a handy upgrade path with the official edition.

I'll be happy to add your code into the examples/ folder as Dockerfile_starter. If you don't mind, can you start a pull request with your addition?

Hello folks,

For a good time please take a look at https://github.com/bostontrader/crypto-docker/tree/master/Legacy/DVC-Devcoin

This is a Dockerfile that builds a modern commit (2020-Dec) of the DVC source code with Ubuntu 18.04.  It weighs in
at a mere 73 mb, which ain't too bad in today's world.  I would have used Ubuntu 20.04 but attempting to do so
makes building db4.8 much more difficult (cuz it's getting too old!)

This works well for me and easily finds peers and downloads the entire DVC blockchain from scratch if necessary.

My humble offering to the ecosystem.  Enjoy!

Dear everyone,

I'm pleased to announce that we have what seems to be a working build of Devcoin wallet for Windows. We are performing tests with the help of satoshi0x and iroking. Please report your own tests here: https://github.com/devcoin/core/issues/85

If tests are successful and we don't get any major bug report during the next 30 days, I'll call it an stable release with version number 0.8.8.0!

Last but not least, let me acknowledge Cpol for partnering with me on this Windows build venture.

Dear Devcoin Community,

Let's start with a friendly reminder of our purpose as a project:

Quote
Devcoin is an ethically inspired cryptocurrency created in 2011 to support open source programmers and writers worldwide. Devcoin will eventually fund all types of developers including hardware developers, musicians, painters, graphic artists and filmmakers

Let's honor it!

I'm glad to announce that the Devcoin Foundation is going donate a percentage of its liquidity to charity via the Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC), a non-profit "that helps promote, improve, develop, and defend Free, Libre, and Open Source Software (FLOSS) projects. Conservancy provides a non-profit home and infrastructure for FLOSS projects. This allows FLOSS developers to focus on what they do best — writing and improving FLOSS for the general public — while Conservancy takes care of the projects' needs that do not relate directly to software development and documentation".

The effective donation amount will be transferred in US dollars and records will be added on every Devcoin round via https://github.com/devcoin/charity

Funding the SFC means to foster projects like: Busybox, Git, Homebrew, Inkscape, Metalink, Qemu, Samba and Wine among others. The next time that you talk about Devcoin with your peers, don't sell it short! Rather let them know how we are contributing to the fighting for software freedom! You can contact markm and he will take your DVC tokens at his stellar address and send you blockchain devcoins into your DVC wallet. 1:1 ration of Stellar DVC tokens/DVC. I coordinated with him on the keybase.io chat by direct messaging him at "knotwork" because keybase has a built in wallet for Stellar and its tokens.

Dan, is it too difficult to implement that automatically in the system? Not a criticism, just genuinely asking.

Also Stellar is an open network, good place for DVC to move in and out of as it builds up value per each unit. Not about dollars anymore.

That's very good!! I like that!

Last few times I looked for free open-source code for giving people tokens in return for coins there were two problems:

One, they claimed the code was not for production-use, that is, not actually hardened for real use;

Two, the code minted tokens on the fly to represent the supposedly-received coins, instead of only letting folks "buy" existing tokens already previously minted; that violates my only issue tokens for half my coins policy and also implies issuing tokens representing coins that are probably still in a "hot" wallet no yet actually frozen or buried safely away somewhere.

-MarkM-

No need to serve as a reserve custodian if it's a coin<->token two-way peg using a burn/mint process based on SPV.  The proofs are the reserve.  If you haven't already, check out Jag's work on Syscoin and how SYS<->SYSX operates between the native coin and the Syscoin Token Platform. Beyond that, from there you can do the same w/ SYSX (Syscoin Token) and get the SYSX (ERC-20).  Then you can play in Ethereum's DeFi land if you want, or do whatever Ethereum people do.

It's live on the Syscoin mainnet.

For actual decentralized "DEX" you might also consider BlockNet's BlockDX.  They are introducing a lot of improvements recently.

And what guarantees the peg will ALWAYS be 1:1?

It's network enforced that the quantity of the coins burned with `syscoinburntoassetallocation` is the quantity of the specific token to be minted (SYSX Asset: https://sys1.bcfn.ca/asset/1045909988).  The SYSX token was provisioned as such, in part by having its entire max supply minted then immediately burned. None of that token is or could float around without having its 1:1 peg as the only way to mint those tokens in the first place (post-provisioning) is out of the token supply that has been burned (again, max supply burned) and that minting can only occur via `syscoinburntoassetallocation` accompanied by a burn of the native coin SYS.

oh, and token spec attribute "max supply" cannot be changed.

Works the same way going the other direction via `assetallocationburn`.  The qty of SYSX burned is then re-minted as SYS out of that burned SYS supply pool.  Only it isn't necessary to burn the entire supply of the native coin of course... burning the max supply is only necessary for provisioning on the token side.

Ok, so then what’s the redundant need for a token for all these coins?  Why not just use DVC, BSV, etc.  why are they all adding a token which you have to swap the coin for the token?  It doesn’t seem necessary since you can just as easily spend the coin itself.

It's part of giving sovereign owners means that are permissionless and trust-minimized to enable their existing value with new use cases, services, and immediately-ideal characteristics (in areas like transactionality, security, programmability) - options that aren't available when the value is stuck on its original platform.  In a word, Interoperability - without using trading mechanisms nor depending on liquidity providers.

Token platforms are conducive to cross-chain integrations like this, especially those that offer programmability like Ethereum in which case a clear path to mutual chain awareness is established.  We've accomplished this between Ethereum ERC-20 and Syscoin Platform Tokens using a notion of superblocks... similar to the early Dogethereum idea, but expanded and fleshed-out quite a bit more to the point of actually being production ready and live on a mainnet. ERC-20s can cross to a Syscoin (learn about Syscoin Bridge: https://syscoin.readme.io/docs/what-is-sysethereum-bridge-how-does-it-work) after which they exist as a token on a platform that provides improved means-of-exchange (fast, low-cost microtransactions and scalability - Learn about Z-DAG: https://syscoin.org/news/what-is-z-dag.) - and proven store-of-value which might be particularly important if Ethereum shifts to proof-of-stake. The other side of the coin is that all existing Syscoin Platform Tokens, including SYSX value which is pegged to the native coin SYS, can access Ethereum and all it has to offer ERC-20s.

For interop w/ platforms that don't offer programmability we are exploring ZKP as a way of generalizing the functionality of our bridge.

A shorter way of answering would just be "The reason is the same general idea in what MarkM is doing w/ Stellar, but our path is trust-minimized, permissionless and doesn't involve a token swap where there are reserve tokens in another human's wallet however good their intentions might be"

MarkM, you could integrate assets quite easily for Galactic Milieu. Check out our github when you have time.

Yup, marketing!

As seen a few months ago, being delisted from Altilly provided us with some great learning: Market or die! Our strongest arm in that regard was Devtome, but Exchanges don't care much about it nowadays, what they want is to measure the strength of our community channels (social media, not just bitcointalk), so that they can partner with us for promoting each other.

I'm glad to announce that Dan (realdantreccia, Satoshi0x) has joined the A-Team (admin team) as the Marketing guy! Dan is currently on charge of the FB page and is going to be delegated more channels progressively. The compensation is 1 (one) ongoing share starting from round 110. That share is taken from Devtome's, so it now has 49 shares.

If you are willing to help with Devcoin marketing, please consider to coordinate with Dan.

The cooperation work will include:

- listing with BTC / USDT / ETH pairs
- 0% fee acc for MM (1month)
- Announcements in our channels: (Facebook, Twitter, Telegram community channel and Telegram, An announcement in our news blog, The email marketing campaign for more than 300,000 users)
Free trial services:
- AMA session in the exchange's telegram channel - in order to pay maximum attention to your project. Free
- Referral Games - to attract more users, and to make social media activity. Free
- Market Making for 2 weeks for free
* I included these free trial services, but you can choose another 3 services upon your decision.

Price: 1 BTC (actual until the 13th of September)

As a reminder, the parameters that we are looking for:

1. EXCHANGE proposal should include: % probability of ROI & timeframe for ROI (based on EXCHANGE experience with other coins/tokens)
2. Devcoin project would invest up to 1 BTC after discounts from EXCHANGE

I ackanowledge the work of people specialized on listing and promoting cryptocurrencies, since that is marketers job, not mine.

I stand on my innitiative of provisioning a reserve of 1 BTC. I'm not saying that WhiteBIT or P2PB2B will take it. Rather we should invest about that much money ourselves or via a partnership. Btw, somebody has to pay the bill at EOD.

People interested on helping with a fundraiser campaign for listing Devcoin, please contact me, we have a lot of work upfront!

Exchanges keep pushing everyday to list Devcoin!

Following the latest proposal from WhiteBIT's Artem:

Quote
I'm sorry that I didn't send the info yesterday, I had to discuss ROI with my team.
ROI and its timeframe is unique for every project and depends on many factors as marketing, idea, interactions with community etc
It can take a month and it can be a year, everything depends on your flow

Now, about the pricing. In budget of 2 BTC we can provide you with:
- The Integration, up to 3 markets on your choice
   Crypto: BTC, ETH
   Stable: USDT, TUSD, USDC, PAX
   Fiat: USD, EUR, RUB, UAH
- Announcements in our social media
- Targeted email campaign for the entire duration of the marketing activities
- Zero-fee trading for the community for 2 weeks after the listing
- Zero-fee accounts for you for 3-months
- Of course, the support
   Personal exchange assistant for you
   24/7 Support for your community

You can use 0% fee, to use your own trading software without paying any trading comissions. So, you can generate volume, create an attractive trading chart etc without additional costs.
Zero-fee for your community is a great thing to stimulate organic trades.
I suppose it will be great to start with 1 pair first (USDT, for example), gain liquidity and after this start other markets. In such way we'll reduce the liquidity budget in future

If such integration plan is good for you, I can try to convince my top-management to provide you with 50% discount to make it 1 BTC

The above is an answer to the conditions I'm sharing with every single exchange knocking on Devcoin Foundation's door:

Quote
... the parameters that we are looking for:

If you can help with the above, I'll reach the whole Devcoin project team and ask them to evaluate your offer.

Btw, I value the work of people specialized on listing and promoting cryptocurrencies, since that is marketers job, not mine.

The next step is to provision a reserve of 1 BTC. I'm not saying that WhiteBIT will take it. Rather we should invest about that much money ourselves or via a partnership. Btw, somebody has to pay the bill at EOD.
