601  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Why only BitcoinJ? on: July 27, 2011, 08:16:01 AM
maybe it's crazy, but would it be possible to make the bitcoin software entirely with PHP?

i don't mean RPC to bitcoind, i mean actually do everything within PHP code?

That is crazy... PHP sucks for security and is very hard to get properly stable for non-trivial projects.

I would think that a full python implementation of bitcoin would be best for web-hosting.
602  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Announcement] The Bitcoin Sun on: July 27, 2011, 08:03:57 AM
so the bitcoin sun is dead?  You guys were just starting to build up a bit of brand reputation...  Sad

come to Australia!  The land of the labour government and taxation.  But the people (on the most-part) are good.  Cheesy
604  Economy / Economics / Re: The Dichotomy Of a Bubble - Why Bitcoin Will Endure on: July 21, 2011, 07:35:01 PM
I would imagine that a singularity such as what Kurzweil describes would require a new monetary system to exponentially increase the efficiency of trade - by an order of magnitude at least. Bitcoin surely satisfies that criteria.

Hey... maybe Satoshi really was an AI and it created Bitcoin to start the singularity. Like the match in the kindling?!  Oh gosh!!  Grin

Smiley  yeah... I have often wondered...

Working on Bitcoin project.
Do not have a huge budget, however if you find this sort of thing fun and want to help the community please inquire.

Edit: using an existing codebase: https://github.com/da2ce7/bitcoin.com.au

607  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is a passworded WINRAR file an effective encryption method? on: June 29, 2011, 12:43:17 PM
Make sure you pick at least one character in each group:

Lowercase: abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
Uppercase: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
Number: 1234567890
Symbol: `~!@#$%^&*()-_=+\|[{]};:'",<.>/? (space)

09 char = insecure
10 char = low security
11 char = medium security
12 char = good security (good enough for your wallet)
13 char = v.good enough for anything.
608  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is a passworded WINRAR file an effective encryption method? on: June 29, 2011, 12:30:37 PM
It is weird as a 10 digit password [a-Z][0-9][!-~] has a search space of 6.05 x 10^19 and could be cracked in 10 weeks by the Bitcoin network...  Secure passwords are much more secure than you expect.
609  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is a passworded WINRAR file an effective encryption method? on: June 29, 2011, 12:21:04 PM
WINRAR is fine... providing you use a secure password...

The password search space for a Uppercas, Lowercase, Digit, and Symbols 12 digit password is 5.46 x 10^23

That would take over 100 years at one hundred trillion guesses per second.  (10x the power of the entire bitcoin network).

can you please provide SHA256 hash of the file.  and a pgp signature.
SHA 256 of the whole .rar: 0129477a6d78d31706535a138541517507ca3cbd2b21110c89c7b879045a16e8

I can't find a download for pgp.

@aral:

No. It's ugly and completely uncommented, i'd better not share it if i hope to ever get engaged for any programming job

Sorry:  Here is a good guide: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Secure_Trading

PGP is the common name for the type of signature... normally you use gpg to make it.

There is a large list of PGP identities here: http://bitcoin-otc.com/viewgpg.php
It is helpful if you have some trust built up before releasing executables.

Should check out what Stefan is developing for bitcoinjs.  Using a bitcoin master key.
614  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Webcoin Alpha Sneak Preview on: June 28, 2011, 03:47:46 PM
@Stefan Thomas

The Bitcoin Deterministic Wallet that described in the video is far better than the one that I described on the forum: https://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=11665.0

Would you please make a basic spec so we can plan to implement it in other bitcoin clients. Smiley

616  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin inflation now is 44% per year on: June 27, 2011, 07:00:20 PM
If you are aware of contemporary textbooks which define "inflation" in terms of the money supply, I'm interested, please list/quote them in this thread.

Correct the standard 'inflation' is regarding price... However the OP was clearly talking about the growth of the monetary supply, (that is in 'inflation' in the generic sense).

It is useful to clarify what sort of 'inflation' we are talking about otherwise the OP post would be clearly incorrect by common definitions.  Since the OP was clearly talking about the monetary supply we should at least talk about it by it's correct label.... (no-matter how rarely it is used in common literature).
617  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin inflation now is 44% per year on: June 27, 2011, 06:39:51 PM
stop argueing about the definition of inflation.
a hundred years of economic theory hasnt settled on one definition. you wont either. it's obvious what kind OP meant.

How can one have a rational discussion with out defining what they are talking about?
618  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: So, how many of you were hoping the price would fall off a cliff? on: June 27, 2011, 06:37:01 PM
BTC Economist, your trolling has been low quality and repetitive lately. We demand higher quality and more entertaining trolling.

here here!  Cheesy
619  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin inflation now is 44% per year on: June 27, 2011, 06:31:51 PM
people are again painfully mixing up 'price inflation/deflation' and 'monetary inflation/deflation'

Bitcoin is in strong price deflation (things are getting cheaper in relative terms to bitcoin).
Bitcoin is also in strong monetary inflation (bitcoins are getting less rare, or the monetary supply is getting diluted by the issuing of new currency).
620  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Wallet Security Dos and Don'ts (for the average Windows user) on: June 27, 2011, 05:17:01 PM
The problem with securing the wallet on Windows is that you have to secure Windows as well, or all your efforts are in vain. I despair of ever seeing a day when the average Windows user has a reasonably secure, virus-free computer. (Hey, you, you aren't average. Stuff it.)

Dang... I was just about to comment that a properly set-up window 7 x64, using limited privilege user accounts, and efs for private data can be very secure.
