321  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining still worth it? on: June 16, 2011, 04:10:13 AM
I pay less than $.05/kwh...thanks pacific northwest (industrial rating).  So I guess it will take quite a bit to make my machines not profitable by power...

LOL.  I can say I'll be around probably as long as well.  I have free utils so as long as the noise doesn't bother anyone it's free money.   Grin

Unfortunately I don't have unlimited amp-age.  I will trip my circuits way before I run outta room to place machines.   Cry

I have a 1200sq. ft. shop with 20ft ceilings...I think I will run out of space and/or no longer be able to control the heat before I run out of power...I ran a 6ga 70A 240V line from my breaker box that is dedicated to the computers...running them on 240v takes half the current, so I should be good for about 15 computers before I have to add a second line...3 of them heat my shop to 70deg f, better than the 2 rigs heating my friends apartment to almost 80deg f.  Plus, at his place the power couldn't handle 2kw safely.

I pay less than $.05/kwh...thanks pacific northwest (industrial rating).  So I guess it will take quite a bit to make my machines not profitable by power...I will probably be one of the last miners...no sense in bailing because the difficulty is going up.  Not to mention I have a 200A 3phase power line so I won't be hitting a power limit on my building anytime soon, just a matter of reinvesting a percentage in hardware to attempt to keep up with difficulty.  Plus, I started this as a supplemental not a primary income.

Anyone who is bailing...I am sure the community will be happy enough to buy your hardware.
323  Other / Meta / Re: Let the Newbies back in? on: June 15, 2011, 02:12:39 AM
I think restricting newbies is a good idea. They tend to always post the same topic (Bitcoin is a scam LoL!), and usually don't understand bitcoin yet. Restricting them to a nice place with a few motivated people to teach them about bitcoin is a good idea, and it leaves this place for people with interesting things to say for people who actually understand bitcoin.

While I agree that you can learn a lot at this forum, I would be extremely interesting in the for opinion of for example people working in banks, stockexchanges, or with high degrees in Economics or Business etc etc even if they just learned about Bitcoin

I'm not sure they get the concept of Bitcoin...and seeing as they view anything that opposes feeding the banks I doubt most will have any more valuable insight.

I had a friend who works at a private country club tell me that some members were discussing Bitcoin the other day...he said how "...if they are talking about it then it should get big...", I replied "...it already is big...they are late to the game...as was I".

Then lets get into this whole "Bitcoin black friday"...only to the sheep...currency traders love that kind of volatility, most markets don't allow that kind of movement in a day...the only real problem is depth...tough to make millions in a day but easy to double a small amount if you play the market right.
324  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin worse than drugs!!! Friends do not let friends do bitcoins :-) on: June 15, 2011, 02:05:30 AM
I think that I could be addicted.  I have invested everything I can into mining, I have 4 different android apps that monitor my mining/Mtgox, I constantly check all my miners...I talk to them (beg them to keep running) and I read every article (positive or negative) about bitcoin.

It's getting bad...I feel your pain Vlad.  I worry that someday I might be that guy clearing out a majority share of all the vid cards that come into my country (I am looking at you Vlad).  Before I found bitcoin I was starting a small business selling RepRap's...the bitcoin thing was meant to be supplemental...its becoming my main focus.  I keep hoping I will reach a point where I can just let it run...after reading some of the forum posts I think that will never happen...I will be one of those people constantly watching/changing/upgrading my computers.

This story made it on Gawker! http://gawker.com/5811868/a-500000-geek-cyberheist

 Shocked

Adrien Chen is a tool. Every story he's posted about bitcoin is only to cast it in a negative light. His writing style mimics that of a college freshman. You can practically see him giggling as he hammers out his prose.

Not only do most of the writers suck, their stories suck.  Jesus Diaz is the worst...he will ban you if you even slightly disagree or point out how incompetent he is.  Banhammer Junkie.  I honestly like Lifehacker's articles and Jalopnik's car talk but Gizmodo/Gawker as a whole really blow.
326  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Here are some IN-STOCK 5830s for your viewing & buying pleasure. on: June 11, 2011, 08:02:37 PM
Jan 2011 AMD reported sales of 5xxx and 6xxx GPUs had sold more than 35 million units. Do you really think that 20000 more 6870s makes any difference at all? (20,000 / 35,000,000 = .06%)

The majority of AMD's GPU sales, those that are in the millions, are low-end GPUs. Think the 6400, 6500, 6600, and 6700 series.

The high-end series 6800 and 6900 account for only a few 100 thousand GPUs. The 6990 is only manufactured in the quantity of a few tens of thousands of units, worldwide.

Exactly...a better way to put it is any 5xxx 6xxx series with over 1100 stream cores.  Those are the ones selling out.
327  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Mt. Gox drops to 20, reconsidering your mining rigs? on: June 11, 2011, 07:51:41 PM
wow back down to 13 last night.

I bought mass at 13.6. Thanks to whoever panicked, lol.

...and that is the reaction I wish I had the money for...when the price drops buy more...it will go back up, its always easy to make money on peoples panics.  I spent all my available funds on mining rigs.
328  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Mt. Gox drops to 20, reconsidering your mining rigs? on: June 11, 2011, 07:47:32 PM
You do know that MtGox website is registered under someone that is on U.S. soil, right?

You do know that MtGox is only an exchange and Bitcoin does not need it to succeed, right?

Unfortunately most people are using bitcoin as nothing more than a cash cow. If the exchanges go away, people have no way to convert it to their currency. When people have no way to convert it to their currency, it becomes worthless to those people. Let's be realistic, how many people do you think went into this without the thought of making money? My guess is very few. What bitcoin needs to survive the gov't attacks is trust in the buyers. Trust in the buyers = more buyers = more demand = rising value. However, there seems to be more sellers than buyers at this moment. Even if bitcoin survives the initial gov't attacks, there is the possibility of it gaining popularity and eventually rivaling the ever falling U.S. dollar. It's a slim chance but a chance nonetheless. Here is a fact. The gov't has swiftfully and successfully shut down any currency that has ever been a threat to the U.S. Dollar. The Liberty Dollar and e-gold are prime examples of such. Would be interesting to see what would happen.

The Liberty dollar people got in trouble for calling their money "dollars" along with other similarities to real US currency.  My understanding is that they were busted for insinuating their money was backed the same way as the federal government...Bitcoin has never made any statements about value...it has been clear from the start that it is only worth what people will pay for it...like a baseball card (remember when those were worth something).

From wikipedia:
§ 514. Fictitious obligations

(a) Whoever, with the intent to defraud—
(1) draws, prints, processes, produces, publishes, or otherwise makes, or attempts or causes the same, within the United States;
(2) passes, utters, presents, offers, brokers, issues, sells, or attempts or causes the same, or with like intent possesses, within the United States; or
(3) utilizes interstate or foreign commerce, including the use of the mails or wire, radio, or other electronic communication, to transmit, transport, ship, move, transfer, or attempts or causes the same, to, from, or through the United States,
any false or fictitious instrument, document, or other item appearing, representing, purporting, or contriving through scheme or artifice, to be an actual security or other financial instrument issued under the authority of the United States, a foreign government, a State or other political subdivision of the United States, or an organization, shall be guilty of a class B felony.
(b) For purposes of this section, any term used in this section that is defined in section 513 (c) has the same meaning given such term in section 513 (c).
(c) The United States Secret Service, in addition to any other agency having such authority, shall have authority to investigate offenses under this section.

The minting of Liberty dollars also appears to be in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 486:

Whoever, except as authorized by law, makes or utters or passes, or attempts to utter or pass, any coins of gold or silver or other metal, or alloys of metals, intended for use as current money, whether in the resemblance of coins of the United States or of foreign countries, or of original design, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.
329  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Mining accidents having caused physical damage (overheating hw, fires, etc) on: June 09, 2011, 06:08:16 PM
So far just a pretty serious papercut from a 5830 box...seriously, it was very deep, like a knife cut.
330  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: If Bitcoins crash or go away, what do you plan to do with your mining rig? on: June 09, 2011, 05:38:35 PM
I like everyone else will either attempt to sell some higher end gaming rigs local.  Like has been said...the market will be flooded.  I am hoping that since this is such a powerful cluster (the bitcoin network) that there will be a way to profit from keeping it running without Bitcoin (ie. leasing time to institutions for computation)...like I said I am "hoping"...I have no idea if it would be possible/practical/profitable.
331  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Corsair 850TX PSU for $134 -- Will it support 3 5850's and a 5870? on: June 09, 2011, 05:28:11 PM
I just purchased a Corsair 850TX 850 watt PSU on Amazon for about 134 shipped (Im a Prime member) and I was wondering if you guys think it will power 3 Sapphire HD5850's and a Gigabyte HD5870 rig?

Here is the link for the specs:
http://amzn.to/lHdtiw

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139009

Using that one for 4x5830's and a 955 Quad Phenom ~300mh/s per card.  Has been running 5 days that way.  Came with a single 70A 12V rail.
332  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Has the hash rate stalled due to hardware availability? on: June 09, 2011, 12:43:01 AM
no more 5 series cards available... and waiting on 6 series price drop or a good 7 series card Smiley

this. i was shopping all over the last few days using my spreadsheet to determine what was the
best bang for the buck and I ended up going with 6950s. The ATI 7xxx series is rumored to be out
in the 2nd quarter but I highly doubt that. I would bet the 4th quarter myself. Maybe 2012? But
once again this is I reading online rumor mills. The 5xxx series is just tapped out unless you want
to buy used here and there and paying up the nose for it too based on ebay prices I saw. How does
one feel about buying a 5830 for more then 150-200 dollars? Pretty lousy when they were 109 just a few
days ago and then gone.

the 6950s, I bought two reference boards, will make fine gaming cards down the road if mining does
not work out for me. Or if mining does seem to work out I can easily add 3 more to my MB running
linux by adding some extenders and a PSU. Plus having a card that if fully tweak-able seems to be a
real advantage right now.

So with 7xxx so far away it seems... 6xxx in their prime... and 5xxx being phased out... i highly doubt
we will see the good 6xxx cards go on a big sale until the 7 series is out and people who have to have
the newest and shiniest get their fill. Until then why would stores mark them down? They are probably
happy seeing stocks dwindle down at current prices.

So to answer your question.. i think you are spot on when it comes to all the good bang for your buck
ATI cards are gone and people cringe at the thought that one has to spend so much money per MH.
800 M/h per second cost me around 1000 dollars this week but I also wanted to make sure the majority
of the parts were usable for a 31337 gaming machine.

I also just purchased 2 6950's when the 5830's ran out.  The 6870's by my calculations were more mh/$ but the difference is significantly less than the difference between the 5830's.  This is what I came up with (prices may vary) this is based on gpu cost only:

5830=$.389/mh
6870=$.583/mh
6950=$.648/mh

That was based on the averages I saw either in the wiki or in the case of the 5830's it was based on what we achieved in overclock and our price.  Although, the fact that running 5830 based machine you need more machines to get the same total mh/s (cpu's/mobo/psu/ram sticks) to get the same as one machine with higher level cards.  So that offsets initial cost differences a bit.
333  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Is it safe to run a miner 24/7? on: June 08, 2011, 05:46:35 PM
It's safe up to a point. My 6990's are below 80 most of the time and have been for months. 5850's stay 75ish. But I think more important than just the heat is the electricity usage and fire hazard.

I have a rig that pulls 11 amps when mining. I purchased one of these Kill-a-Watt's and tested each of my setups first. Then I went to my breaker box and figured out how many circuits there were and if I needed to move anything to another outlet.

Turns out my 11 amp rig is on a 15 amp circuit. So I moved everything else off it and I am just below the 80% recommended limit for 24/7 usage. Then I purchased renters insurance Wink

I was looking at my power box yesterday at my shop which I am setting up at.  I have a spare 70A 240V breaker (also a spare 100A 3-Phase).  My shop has Industrial 3 phase I am guessing to be at least a 300A main line...given area averages I'm looking at less than .05/kwh.

So I think I'm good on power.  Built a box which has a boxfan with a filter blowing in and a boxfan without a filter blowing out.  Starting with 3 rigs ~3.1gh/s.

Now if I can only find more 5830's.

But on the question of 24/7...why wouldn't it be safe...just don't get greedy...no need to exceed the temp rating for that extra 1btc a month.  Do the math on the cards/processor/mobo current use...add 10%(or more) and that is the psu you need.  I think the main risk is drawing too much current, most modern PSU's can run on 240v also, if you wire into a 240v line you cut your current in half...be sure not to overload your breakers.
334  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Keeping cards from bumping into each other with no case? on: June 08, 2011, 05:33:50 PM
L shaped aluminum strip, Drill holes .8" apart (so 1.6" for a double) make sure to get the distance from the edge right, I used some spacers from my case to mark the distance.

It looks like this: http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=7216.msg178870#msg178870

this just got here 3 hours ago
omg!!
Sapphire is gonna be rich!!)) I think they sold all of their radeons 58xx))
ps... maybe our community should write a letter to Sapphire and ask them to produce more 58xx devices?))
pps... i wonder what is in the second box in the top right corner??

I was wondering where the rest of them went.  I got 8 and went back for more and they were gone...I almost bought 10 more.

Anyone checked Sapphire stock lately...I hope someone bought some with some of the bitcoin money...they had to have gone up.  If not they will be posting a good quarter.
