1  Economy / Lending / Re: Raising funds for 3D Printer, 300BTC on: July 02, 2012, 04:47:44 AM
Recently I found out these printers are becoming more accessible to end users. Until a couple weeks ago, I thought they were industrial grade equipment, not something one could have at home.

Does anyone know if there's a "main 3D printing" forum, something like bitcointalk.org for 3D printing? I've googled a little but all forums I found were almost "ghost forums", with just a couple dudes posting something once in a while...
The subject is quite interesting, I'd like to learn more.

Reprap.org or the #reprap IRC chat on freenode is a great starting point.

The mendelmax is a solid printer but it functions exactly the same as a Prusa Mendel.  The main difference is the frame, it is made from extruded aluminum instead of threaded rod.

Anyone who is going MendelMax should either source it themselves or buy from Trinity Labs (the company the designer is part of).  Also, the MendelMax is not the newest design but it is very popular, there are many others that are newer derivatives.
2  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Does windows really use more power than linux? on: March 04, 2012, 01:47:00 AM
Okay, unstable was the wrong term. The distro I was using, linuxcoin, proved to be fairly unstable FOR ME. No disrespect to the guy(s) who worked on it as it is great for many people.

Linux is just fine if you know what you're doing. I was mostly pointing to the fact that I don't believe there is a huge power savings and as noob I felt like I was led to believe there was.

Of course, there are added costs to windows rigs, licenses and drives. Drives are coming WAY down, especially the 30gb SSD's. Just bought two for $30 each and they use 2 watts at peak.

Didn't intend to start a windows/linux war. Linux just has driven me insane for months and I think newer miners should know they don't HAVE to go the linux route to be efficient. I lost more money with rigs that wouldn't run than I ever would have if I had just started with windows. Even if I had to buy the licenses and drives.

Just putting this out there for new miners, UPTIME is everything, the rest is negligible when you do the math. Yes, an efficient linux machine might costs $200 less(windows license+drive) but if it doesn't run consistently or you can't get it working for weeks, you've lost more than that already.

I estimate I lost about 300 potentially mined coins screwing around with linux. At current prices that is $1500. Had I started right away and bought 9 SSD's for my rigs at $99 each(64gb) I'd still be ahead since I have the licenses.

even if you buy 7 home premium when it's on sale at newegg for 79.99 and a $50 30Gb ssd that's $130 per rig, still would have only cost $1170 for 9 rigs.

Nevermind, you can sell the windows with a built rig down the road and the SSD. Not so much with used thumb drives.

Run the win7 trial and use the command prompt to do the slmgr -rearm to get extra time...even when it expires it runs fine mining...mine has been expired for 4 months at least and it has only been shut off when the power went out.  Other than that it is solid.

I run a phenom x4 955 with the MSI gd70 and 5x5830's.  I run 240vac on a dedicated line that connects directly to the breaker panel (originally I was running 4 machines, 14 gpus).

D&T,

I was looking into purchasing 9 of these:

http://pdusdirect.com/power-distribution-units/switched/pdu-cw-8h2-c20m

If you can save me $350 a pop, I would buy enough for my entire farm, and future farm.

This is the last piece missing for me being able to leave town for an extended period of time.

Best,
gigavps

Arduino with relay board and ethernet shield works out to something like 275$ for around 40 ports. 160$ of which is relay boards, 8 of them.
Tho requires a bit of work to get running, but ought to be rather easy after that.
Not a perfect solution, but half way there.

If you use small fet's instead of relays you can cut that cost down.  If you build your own boarduino you could probably get the cost down to less than $20.
4  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Is there any interest in a hardware board which will allow remote power cycling on: March 03, 2012, 10:19:39 PM
I've done quite a bit research on this for servers, namely how to build a cluster of cheap servers on the cheap.

One option is to use Arduino with a Relay board and Ethernet Shield.
That will give you maximum of around 40 relays, depending upon model of Arduino used etc.
Parts can be sourced from: http://arduino-direct.com and eBay
Some information: http://arduino-info.wikispaces.com/ArduinoPower#4-8

As for finished product i ended up choosing IP Power 9258T and Avocent Direct PDU for initial setups for it's low buy-in price.

For KVM i ended up choosing Belkin Omniview for larger setups and Aten CS1716i for smaller setups.
For big setups Belkin Omniview works out somewhere around 30-40$ per node, depending upon do you get your gear from cheap or expensive place.
Aten CS1716i is a few $ more expensive per node only, but the Belkin also provides saner setup by the means of using CAT5 cabling Smiley

Back in July I built an arduino resetter that hooked to both reset and power.  Had feedback to show when the computer was on/off.  Temp monitoring for ambient and room temp.  I wrote the GUI to interface with a control computer (yes, parallel port would probably have been easier but I had the arduino).

Right after I got it done I never needed it again.  I got my rigs to the stable point where they do not shut down unless the power is lost.  I was going to do an instructable but I got busy with other things.

Can you even boot Windoze from USB? Anyway it's not safe for the average Bitcoin user due to all the malware and viruses.  Plus Linux has proved its stability while Windoze will restart nearly every 24Hrs if you have updates on?
gotta love the FUD.

My WIN7 machine with 5x 5830's was up for 3 months before a power outage forced a reset.  Also, I have an expired trial version on there and it still works fine.
6  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Multi-GPU Question on: January 22, 2012, 10:38:52 AM
Windows= 8 GPU (Dual Gpu cards count as 2)
Linux= 10 GPU (I personally have not tested this because I do not run Linux)

Last August or so ATI updated the drivers to allow more than 4 GPU's (or 5...cannot remember).  Windows would recognize them but ATI's drivers would not allow them to be used.

Also, I have been using PCIe extenders with no issues for months...5 GPU/Machine with 4 extenders.
7  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: POLL: How do you found out about bitcoin? on: January 20, 2012, 03:23:44 AM
Article about a mining rig mistaken for marijuana grow op...I thought can someone really get the money back from the power.  Price was about $9 when I ordered parts to mine...$30 by the time I was up and running...and soon after they just kept going down.

But I am over even on the hardware and Bitcoin has always paid the power/internet at my shop.
8  Economy / Services / Re: Possible? Write a DD-WRT script to short two pins momentarily, to reset PC on: January 20, 2012, 01:24:27 AM
I had this same issue when I first got setup.  I would have lockups where the computer is technically on but unresponsive.  It would take a physical shutdown to clear it up.  So I made an arduino resetter hooked to transistors which shorted the pins on the power/reset switch, then I wrote a GUI that was intended to run on a "monitor" machine that was not mining.  The GUI had buttons to reset/power down with an indicator that changed when the power was on/off.  Then I could just log into Teamviewer and do the physical reset.

By the time I got it all done I didn't need it anymore.  I got all my heat/overclock issues stabilized and it never needs shutting down.  Aside from one power outage my miners have been running 3-4 months solid.  I decided it was not worth the small amount of hashrate increase if I had to go reset the thing all the time.

I run 5x Sapphire 5830's in one machine for around 1.5Gh/s.

Amazing to watch this haha, I managed to buy 200btc at bitcoinica @ 6.03 while mtgoxlive said it was 6.95, so I'm going to sell those with at least a profit Smiley I zhoutonged Zhoutong Smiley

or at least mtgox mtgoxed zhoutong lol

goxing zhoutong? Grin

There has to be a picture somewhere for that.

Nice...needs labels to define which one is which though.  I would assume we are the little fish.

I see guns and the internet as two very similar things in regards to regulation.  Any effort will be futile. Technology will always prevail.

http://techcrunch.com/2011/09/20/is-printing-a-gun-the-same-as-buying-a-gun/

Awesome article, Im actually in the process of making a 3d printer...

Which printer?

I have the majority of the hardware except the extruder, Im leaning towards reprap, makerbot is ok too, but I think reprap is the one that will satisfy my needs..

Any suggestions?  there are a few more worth mentioning, I just cant remember their names..

I would recommend RepRap...better to build it yourself and learn how it actually works.  Plus, there is a very strong IRC community.

13  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [IDEA] plugin for dd-wrt that allows selling internet connection to neighbors on: January 14, 2012, 11:38:00 PM
I thought DD-WRT already had an option for "coffee shop" login where you get a temporary password that lasts x number of minutes.  Seems like it would be really easy to make it so it auto emails someone a temp password when they send you a payment.

14  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BITCOIN booth at CES Las Vegas! Tell all reporters! on: January 14, 2012, 01:22:07 AM
Today is the last day of the show.  It's been a very busy and exhausting 4 days, but we have talked to alot of really big decision makers at some major companies.  These deals will take time to follow up on and complete. but look for an explosion of bitcoin in 2012, in ways you can't imagine.  some of these ideas we had not even thought of!

Grrr! You tease! Wink

I don't care how much you tease us, provided the big reveal isn't something along the lines of: We're all going to Pattaya!!!

Since I was there and went to dinner with these guys, I got to hear what some of these things were.  Some of them were not things we would want to post in the forums - about how X person at Y company was totally interested - as we anticipate that those very same people will be browsing these forums and aren't going to want to see their own name in our brags before they even get a chance to do their research and take the temperature of what people think of Bitcoin when they get back home.

For example, I understood that somebody responsible for managing the point-of-sale networks for large chain of truck stops had a lot to ask.  Do I dare say who in the forums?  Of course not, my interest in not alienating them by having them see their own company name in our forums exceeds my interest in satiating everyone's desire to know who it is.

I don't expect an influx of 4chan newbies suddenly dumping bazillions of dollars into Bitcoin just having heard of it for the first time due to their first encounter at CES.  If they had never heard of Bitcoin, their first impression from seeing a Bitcoin booth is that it's another company just trying to peddle a whiz bang product, and CES is overflowing with of those.  (I did notice though, that people who understood and used BitTorrent were much quicker at grasping the magic sight-unseen than those who did not - based on that observation, I am seriously considering a window sticker on my car: "Bitcoin will do to money and banking what BitTorrent did to music and movies.")

But on the other hand, what keeps me excited, is the people who came up to the booth and say things like "Hey! I've heard of Bitcoin. I don't yet know what it is, but I heard <whatever>, and want to ask questions, because we do <this> and <that>, and I was wondering if Bitcoin could help us do a better job of <this>".  These are people who are already well-situated in a career where their buyoff on Bitcoin can be a major part of a big company's decision to take a real look at it.  Those are the ones who will make a serious difference when they get home.

Speaking of truck stops....I hadn't even thought of the ComCheck aspect of Bitcoin.  That would be a market that has not been tapped yet.  Big issues come from all the truckers needing emergency cash...hence the ComCheck....Bitcoin could virtually replace/secure the whole process.

16  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Multiple PSUs and Grounding on: January 11, 2012, 08:24:16 PM
Depends on what type of "grounding" you are talking about.  If you mean connecting to a common "earth ground" on the AC then they already share the same ground point when they are plugged into the wall (your ground wire in the house is connected to a common stake that is driven into the ground outside, or connected to a cold water pipe).  If you mean a common negative on the PSU's DC voltage then that is a different thing, I connected the PSU's together via DC negative on my setup.  You need to keep the connection between the 2 short to prevent ground loops though.

Do a quick search as this was discussed in a much greater detail back around June/July...couldn't find a link to a writeup but I know I linked them in the past.

I use TightVNC when I am on my network.  Teamviewer when I am remote.
19  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 2012 according to the Mayan calendar on: January 06, 2012, 12:13:49 AM
I don't know what's going to happen but I know we live in the most interesting times and more than ever is going on week by week in our world. Look up Terrence McKenna's novelty theory if you want to wind yourselves up a bit more.

From Wikipedia:
"Timewave zero" is a numerological formula that purports to calculate the ebb and flow of "novelty", defined as increase over time in the universe's interconnectedness, or organized complexity.[75] According to Terence McKenna, the universe has a teleological attractor at the end of time that increases interconnectedness, eventually reaching a singularity of infinite complexity in 2012, at which point anything and everything imaginable will occur simultaneously. He conceived this idea over several years in the early to mid-1970s while using psilocybin mushrooms and DMT."

From Swishercutter:

"Hallucinations are not to be trusted."

We will know in December when they come up with another "correction" that they are wrong...just like all the other "prophecies".  There have been people with the end is near signs for quite some time.

While hallucinations are not to be trusted, the relationship between your interpretation of a hallucination and it's effects on your mind/body should be, as this just goes back to self-reflection or introspection.

Whether or not a hallucination is "real" (there are arguments to be made on both ends), it's effects on you are very real in a self-evident kind of way, and you can learn one hell of a lot from this.

Interpretations of hallucinations should never be considered valid basis for what is going to happen 40 years down the road...especially when there is no real evidence of it.  At this point I am hoping for a mass extinction...I just hope it culls the herd in a positive way.

I would say higher than that...but what do I know.  I am not selling anything for a while for sure.
