But why can't the price go up?
and why can't the price go down?

It can. It already does.
But he seemed to argue that a price which was never profitable (0.001) was already too high (overhyped).
922  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Catcoin - Scrypt meow! on: January 02, 2014, 08:10:38 PM
Every coins need a price which makes them profitable for miners! No more, no less.
Pizza and Subaru will come later. (Well, I don't eat crap food and I already have an Audi, but...)

If it isn't profitable than no one will mine it. If no one mines it than the coin dies. Simple as that.

So, if you deny the profitable price from a coin then you piratically just killed it at day 0.

I don't say you can't do that. If you can, by all means, do what you want. Except talking bullsh|t...

That is exactly what is happening with this coin. It isn't profitable to mine, people are jumping ship and the coin is dying. But your previous post is irrelevant. You correctly identified the price at which it would be profitable again to mine at this difficulty, but there is no reason it SHOULD go up that high. You just pointed out the obvious alternative to what can happen to the coin. It can simply die.

But why can't the price go up?

I mean, not from this point when it looks too late...
But you seemed to suggest that CAT never deserved a ~0.002 price to begin with and thus it was a dead end from the very beginning.

I also agree that 0.001 isnt profitable for miners, but it should be a steady 0.001 even if it isnt profitable simple as that. Then the activity from miners and promoters will increase that too 0.0025 on-wards.
This coin should not be dropping to what it is now, even with the nethashrate low as it is. There is a manipulator on the crypty website dropping the price either to make a fortune or to kill the coin.

Then why do you suggest it? People are already fixated on 0.001 which is very wrong from the beginning. Why give them this number again as a false reference?

I guess it's a combination of both. Some people want to make too much profit from this coin but they didn't realize that they took it too far and practically killed the coin on the run.
+1

i like how speculators, and people left holding the bag are pointing the fingers at everyone except themselves for hyping the coin and pumping the coin up to unsustainable levels.

guess what?  the market caught up.  the value has dropped to a level that will have to be sustainable as the currency grows again, and slowly if it does at all.  catcoin will have to live with the high difficulty right now; that is the price of buying our own hype.

What overprice and overhype?

For the last time...

Why shouldn't CAT deserve as much as an already failing DOGE?
it's been overhyped, yes.

there is no overprice right now, no.  as i stated, it has dropped to a level that catcoin can be sustainable at.

But it is clearly NOT sustainable as it is! Why do you say this when facts prove otherwise?
You can see the dropping net hash rate. That's a clear indication that this coin is seriously under-priced.
If you care to make the math, you can see that even the record price was below 0.002, yet 0.002 should have been a low end with higher spikes.  -> To make the coin profitable for miners. (If you care about that...)

I honestly cant believe the price of Catcoin.. This coin should be at a steady 0.01 per coin.

No no no... Don't ever say this number again (at least until the next difficulty retargeting)!
The initial 0.001 mark is what caused the current situation at the first place!
0.001 is a way to low price to make it profitable for mining with the current difficulty. It must be between 0.002 and 0.0025 to be picked up by miners!
0.0005-0.001 was fine with diff 64 in the first two days, but it's not even close to the optimal price with the current difficulty!

Ah got my 0's misplaced, i meant 0.001. No need to go all mathematical on me lol just a mistake, chill.

I know (well, actually my subconscious automatically corrected your number for sanity).
But my opinion stands still! I didn't misplace the decimal point here:

0.001 won't cut it! We need a 0.002 baseline with some 0.0025 spikes.

The price will skyrocket and Orbán will be reelected.

Haha. Nice one. Wink

damn catcoin just keeping tanking. anyone know whats next difficulty and when ?

Probably 1.0 after 1.0 years. Shocked
930  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Catcoin - Scrypt meow! on: January 02, 2014, 04:29:30 PM
For those who were lazy to calculate this. (It's based on the CoinWarz table, shortly before I wrote this post.)

What do you think will happen when panic sellers are out of CAT coins and there won't be any resupply from the quasi-nonexistent miners?
931  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Catcoin - Scrypt meow! on: January 02, 2014, 02:21:38 PM
what would happen IF a hardfork to change the difficulty were to be implemented.

Chaos, destruction, death!
If you think there is a real problem or panic now than let's see how the community would react to a synthetic inflation happening in front of their eyes in an already stressful time!
I would probably go mad myself and make a last panic sell just before the fork emerges. LOL. Grin

All this panic seems kind of absurd, given it would take just 23 BTC right now, to buy 23,116 CATs on Cryptsy to bring the price level there back up to the 0.001 BTC level. That's out of over 1 Million CATs in existence. It is not as if we have a large and slowly descending sell wall, with sufficient force to crush the coin's value into total junk status. Let's keep our eyes on the target, and not worry too much about day-to-day fluctuations - except maybe to exploit bargains.

Well, I think it's actually more than that.
If you check the prices regularly, I think it's visible that the price is artificially set to a low end, even if you don't see it as obvious.
The manipulations aren't hidden but not really subtle either. There is only as much movement as necessary but there is something bigger behind the scenes than you actually let to see (but bigger is still not infinite).
932  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Catcoin - Scrypt meow! on: January 02, 2014, 01:43:54 PM
I am not sure how much of "bonus" a real short-term profit-maximizing miner would need to receive as a donation to see this coin as a profitable mining target for a few weeks.
According to my earlier estimates, the price must be >=0.002 BTC for CAT to be profitable for mining and >=0.0025 to be picked up by auto-switching multipools/rigs.

But I still think that the only problem is the price! And it probably needs nothing else but time.
Why would anybody sell this coin significantly cheaper than their estimated profit (something similar to MOON or DOGE mining)?
Because they make panic sells! But panic sellers don't buy it back and re-list it, and there is only finite number of coins on exchanges. Speculators will re-list it at higher and higher prices!
933  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Catcoin - Scrypt meow! on: January 02, 2014, 06:09:05 AM
I think the first mistake was that the excel trade sheet listed this coin at ~0.001 BTC at high value and it stick.
It was obvious that this coin will be too far from profitable to mine at that price after the very close difficulty recalculation.

This is why I didn't dump this coin, but bought even more than I mined.
It was obvious that price must rise (at least to 0.002 or 0.0028 when it spikes) or that the coin will practically die soon. (I wished to believe in the first version...)

The next mistake was the big wave of panic sells which pushed the price even lower. But it's a free market. And it's their mistake.

But it's not over yet. I wouldn't call it dead at this point. Let's see what the next few days will bring for CAT.

3 hours per one confirmation... So one transaction takes whole day. Tomorrow it will be slower than italian post.

I can't remember if DOGE was technically any faster than 8-10 hours.
935  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Catcoin - Scrypt meow! on: January 01, 2014, 10:15:46 PM
PEOPLE, NO NEED TO PANIC. CATCOIN IS A BRAND NEW COIN, JUST GIVE IT TIME.

I think it's too late for that. Not that I am panicing myself. (I am currently buying up as much CATs as I can for the MOONs I mined in the last two days.) But I think I know a panic when I see one. It looks something like this:

EST (Eastern Standard Time) is UTC-5 and CST (Central Standard Time) is UTC-6. So it should be dropping within the next 20 minutes unless it misses the window.

Thank you but I already left my PC when I could have read this.

And now I tried to compile a wallet and it failed to run in server mode. (I should have actually try to run that FeatherCoin wallet I made earlier.)
It says a port is already used but it isn't.
I tried to compile the QT version as well but that doesn't work (won't even compile with qmake, just like Moon).

Prices and volumes seem to start moving! Cool

@Foamy
Any chance you (including every other future coin developers) could give me the time (frame) of launch in standard UTC time?
I live in Europe, so I am not familiar with these 3 letter things you refer to in the OP. (I am not even sure if that is a joke or not...)
940  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] The First coin of 2014 (AHC) AnHeroCoin !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! on: January 01, 2014, 04:52:53 AM
i was able to compile fedoracoin using this guide (for a different coin but it worked for fedora, just swap the gut repositories..), but the binaries only worked in linux.. and i don't know how to solo mine in linux. plus you need nodes and ports for the soloin which i dunno if you can get otherwise from the op's mouth.

http://forum.feathercoin.com/index.php?topic=5086.0

edit; i did this on ubunto 13.10 or .04 or whatever, not Xubuntu.

I install every packages which were listed on this link and I successfully compiled the FeatherCoin wallet from the terminal using make (from linux to linux, not cross-compiled for Windows). Thank you. Wink
