For me the most important part is to be familiar with the project you write about. There is nothing worse to read an article with totally incorrect informations. As you already have said reading whitepaper is very important. For current information it's also useful to join their telegram or read on their website and medium (if they are posting there). Using different sources will pay out for you as article writer!

Contributing something to the community is one of the essentials most users forget here and they are only looking at the money. Some alts are very useless and getting shitcoins, for sure. There are coming more shitcoins every day, so I think it's a good idea of sorting them out if you have some. In the end there will be only a few coins/tokens existing with a bigger value and some shitcoins getting useless.

In total I think 90% to 95% of all alts will be shitcoins in the end.

Altcoins are quite different. Different functions, different histories and different futures. Here are some of them:

DOGE - who knows not about Dogecoin - started as a joke and now it's one of the most famos ones
LTC - Litecoin is an alternative to Bitcoin - faster transaction but not so implemented like Bitcoin
BNB - coin from Binance and used on it's exchange. Big rise in value since ICO in 2017

2020 is really far away, so it's very difficult. But it's most likely the big one are still the big ones.
So BTC and ETH can be very high in 2020.

Regulation will be necessary to implement Bitcoin and get mass adoption. But I'm not sure how we can define the word regulation. There is a big space of definition what regulation will mean to cryptocurrencies and how it will affect them.
