201  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [NAUT] Nautiluscoin - First Coin w/Stabilization Fund - Digishield on: June 06, 2015, 05:40:38 AM
The wildly disparate opinions in this thread are hilarious. Perfect microcosm of Bitcointalk in general.

Can't blame Kelly for not posting here, though. He's dammed if he does, dammed if he doesn't.

Guess we'll see what happens next month.
202  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [UNO] Unobtanium Info & Discussion - Update to 0.10 Wallet - Merge Mine w/BTC! on: June 05, 2015, 03:01:24 AM
Hey, Worth. Firstly, it's gratifying that I don't seem a dill to you: as a teacher -- I'm a retired technical-writing tutor -- you understand this oddity.

If you'll give Ian and I a few days to wrassle with some Internet problems here, I'll PM you. Yes! Your help would be most welcome.

What are we trying to cover? Gonna start with Paper Wallet Go-to-Whoa.

IMZ Mark

Yeah, it's a real problem and it's very widespread. I had the fortune of studying material on the human mind (NLP and related topics) from some very good teachers who explained the "4 levels" concept to me back in the late 90s and early 2000s.  With this perspective I couldn't help notice that most computer challenged were being taught by people who either didn't know how to teach but were good at technology, or sometimes people who weren't really good at either.

The result was about what you'd expect if a driving instructor got in a car with a brand new student who'd never driven a car before and said "OK, drive down the highway to exit 30, turn right on Main, drive three blocks and it's the first building on the right."  Those level instructions would work great for an experienced driver, but a newbie is thinking at a level of "where should my hands go?" "How much do I turn the wheel?" "How much do I press the pedal, which pedal is which?" etc.

So I resolved to make my lessons accessible to basically anyone - it means I go into more detail than more advanced students want to hear, but it's the way to make sure nobody is left behind. Anyway, happy to help; talk to you about it later.

[SIGH]

I have simply failed in my efforts to write (saleable) Basic Crypto Security instructions. Here's why:

https://cryptoguild.qnetau.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=3&p=488#p488

Ian and I will discuss it, and report to the community. (Our translator is likely to encounter similar difficulties.)

IMZ Mark

Maybe I can help.  I teach computers and technology to non-technical students for a living, and have for years.

Like you said in the link, it's difficult for people who are good at something to explain it to those who are not.  Once you reach the unconscious competency level, it can be extremely difficult to explain to someone still in the unconscious competency or conscious competency level.  See this video I posted to YouTube back in 2008:   https://youtu.be/c_jvC2BCZ9M?t=2m48s     (please excuse the video quality; one of my oldest recordings)

So what are you trying to cover? I may already have some of it covered in my existing cryptocurrency course material, or can record new lessons. Paper wallets for example have been on my to-do list.  Let me know.
204  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [Network Repaired][ANN][BITS] BitSeeds - A Currency that Grows! on: June 05, 2015, 12:11:07 AM
With the current state of the distribution, this project is going nowhere. The Rainforest Foundation needs to somehow distribute a portion of their 100-million XSEEDs.

They're already planning to have multiple giveaways.  Gabe posted about it close to two weeks ago when Bitcointalk was down:

https://www.reddit.com/r/BitSeeds/comments/36vjps/future_plans_bct_is_down_so_well_be_posting_here/

I have to take partial responsibility for the radio silence. I spoke with Gabe on the phone last month about some plans we're working on together including multiple giveaways. I had some info I needed to post relating to it, but was delayed due to some technical problems and a couple of unrelated issues that held up my production schedule.  Anyway, check the link above.

If Gabe ends up not posting here much in the future, I'll pick up some of the slack and pass on what info I have to keep things updated.
205  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][FLO] Florin | The original tx msg coin | Blocktech Project Alexandria on: May 21, 2015, 10:33:56 PM

You are not able to substantively answer serious questions, so you try to distract people by pointing out that you have more posts than me? Seriously? Something is very not right here.

Can you summarize what Alexandria offers in a short paragraph? I've read a bunch of interviews, watched a bit of video, researched a bit and it doesn't actually seem to have anything real except for using phrases like "free speech" and so on.

Again, can you summarize it in a short paragraph without hype.

You have 14 posts total, 10 of which are in this thread repeating the same thing. That is what's being pointed out.

Alexandria allows for direct publishing of media to an audience without censorship through DMCA takedown or beause the company in control of the platform dislikes the content. It gives the potential for direct revenue for content creators in an environment that has made it increasingly difficult for musicians and other creative people to make money from their work. It allows for the archiving of information in a decentralized fashion to prevent "data loss" like the original Library of Alexandria.

You have been given multiple explanations and links to more info. The potential seems obvious to me, and has for the better part of a year. If you don't get it, you don't get it.

ICYMI: https://twitter.com/BKBrianKelly/status/601032163430166528

"As part of the Blockchain Solution for Greece I have offered to donate @Nautiluscoin to any municipality to use as a parallel currency"

I personally think that he has nothing to provide for NAUT and trying to become clean by just avoiding it and pushing the responsibility to someone else.
I suggest you tweet him for what he actually meant and be clear about his statement... In his video, it did not seem nice indeed... He said he will give the keys...
So it is definitely trying to avoid NAUT and its problems... So can we say BK let down the investors very bad ?

dont know. If naut would end up as a parallel currency that wouldnt be a bad thing at all. This coin would have at least have a reason to exit in that case and a real usecase unlike 95% of the other alts out there. Obviously there are a lot of questions, why would anyone chose naut over the hundreds of alts or why not launch a blockchain based currency and use that? IF there will ever be a crypto used as a parallel currency. Many ifs and whys.

But I dont see as negative as you do.

cheers

Yeah, I haven't had a chance to watch the full video but watched the section where BK said he'd hand over the keys to NAUT to Greece and/or a local community. IMO, any currency that is officially adopted by a real-world community, let alone potentially an entire country, will have a huge increase in perceived value and the price should follow.

I don't see this as a negative.
207  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: May 20, 2015, 09:02:56 AM
I find the 21 Dot Co. plans to be interesting and potentially pretty exciting. Speak-of efficiency though, I can't help but wonder if this could be achieved more effectively with a different algo like Blake-256 which, to my understanding, is vastly more efficient than SHA-256.

Efficiency isn't important, it's only important to individuals relative to your competition. Efficiency determines the total hash rate. The amount of energy consumed in PoW is determined by the price of bitcoin. We are in a price zone determined by the physical limitations of available energy space etc. Once we have halved we enter a new zone.

21 are positioning themselves to take advantage of a price spike like the run-up to $1200 when mining with a shitty GPU was more profitable than at any time prior, even more profitable after the more efficient ASICs for a short time. The price dip now has made bitcoin more efficient, not the advancement in tech. That's just given an opportunity to the innovators.

Efficiency is very important in this context (although it doesn't seem like you're using the word efficiency the same way I am).

When you're talking about embedding chips in a wide range of consumer devices from larger household items to mobile devices and even their chargers, you need to do so in a way that is going to be seen as a benefit to the hardware manufacturers who will incorporate the chips into their devices -- and at the same time have it either be invisible to the end user, or be seen as a benefit to them.

In in most cases this will be a lot more difficult to do if the devices generate noticeably more heat and use a lot more electricity, so anything that can improve this will make it an easier sell.

Yes, you can manufacture more efficient ASIC hardware for SHA-256, but you could also use the same manufacturing techniques to make ASICs designed for a more efficient algorythm and get the same hashrates, but for much less electricity/battery use and at a lower temperature.

A competing startup could potentially challenge 21 just by using a different algo and win more manufacturing partners who don't want to lower the Energy Star ratings of their appliances; or partners who want to sell super light, thin, and quiet (no fan) laptops with long battery life; phone & tablet manufacturers; etc.

There may be more efficient algos than Blake-256 - I'm using it as an example because I've mined a little with it and the white paper mentions the design being specifically suited for lightweight environments.

Here's the white paper:  https://131002.net/blake/blake.pdf

Obviously that would require using an altcoin instead of bitcoin, and I know this tends to be a very bitcoin-only thread, so don't run me out of town on a rail as a heretic for asking.  Smiley
209  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][FLO] Florin | The original tx msg coin | Blocktech Project Alexandria on: May 20, 2015, 01:13:07 AM

I support free sharing and so on, so if the project is serious then I'd support it. Comparing it to twitter is a stretch. You and others talk about your project. There are articles like http://bitcoinmacroeconomics.com/2015/04/17/alexandria-v0-4-alpha-florincoin/ which are embarrassing to even read and http://bitcoinist.net/exclusive-qa-with-joseph-fiscella-florincoin-and-decentralized-applications/ which kind of foreshadows a pump rather than any serious project.

It looks exactly like a pump built around a coin that has been thoroughly bought up by the pumpers. Please describe exactly what the project is expected to do, in less than 200 words, if that isn't too much to ask.

Everything I've seen you say about Alexandria seems to be based on the idea that its purpose is to do something like replace the Pirate Bay. It can be used that way, but that's more of a "bonus feature" than the intended use case.  Here's a new video interview that might help you understand it better:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzG7i-eThnw

I've been aware of the project for something like a year now, and I personally accumulated FLO through both mining and buying it up in small amounts gradually over the last 10-12 months.  I did this because I saw the potential in the project for guarding against censorship and rewriting of history, as well as the potential for content producers (like myself as an educator, or like my brother who is a musician) to publish and monetize their content directly to an audience.

I'm not the only person who did this.

I also know that a lot of people in the #Coinmarkets IRC channel bought up a ton of it right before it went onto Bittrex, and a bunch who grabbed it right afterwards. So that may account for what you're interpreting as the devs trying to engineer a pump.

The project is not a finished product yet, but it is a real thing; I was invited into the private alpha a few weeks ago and have used it and have it installed on the computer I'm typing this on.

Wait... but I thought Macs "Just work?" How can this be possible?

Wait... Someone deliberately misunderstanding a 15 year old slogan from Apple as if it ever meant "it's infallible?" How can this be possible?   Roll Eyes

thx @BitcoinCharlie
That wallet works excellent - sync'ed very quick, and looks cool too Smiley
Glad to be at your service!

Anyone have any update on the MAC wallet?

Yeah, an updated Mac client would be nice.
212  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [Network Repaired][ANN][BITS] BitSeeds - A Currency that Grows! on: May 15, 2015, 11:35:07 PM
Mac wallet is up. Here is the link its also on our site.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/bitseedsofficialrepository/files/

Awesome. It's nice to be able to stake without booting a VM. My iMac is running cooler already.

Checking Bittrex's status page, it looks like their Bitseeds wallet is finally working, too.
213  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [UNO] Unobtanium Info & Discussion - Miners Update to 0.10 on: May 15, 2015, 03:01:28 AM
I'm going to put on my conspiracy theory hat and wonder if the weird delay in the updated wallets has anything to do with Blockstream's now-overdue* federated sidechains which is supposed to be implemented in UNO. Doesn't make much sense to me that MM has been planned for block 600K for weeks, yet no wallets were prepared; waiting for Blockstream might make sense.

Florin/alexandria/blocktech devs LIVE in 7 hours.

Going on now...
215  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [Network Repaired][ANN][BITS] BitSeeds - A Currency that Grows! on: May 13, 2015, 01:14:16 AM
so 3 million are in the hands of people aside form the developers/foundation. this is put up against 4 million of developers/foundation staking or against 100 million staking.

the general population needs to pitch in and stake while the devs reduce their staking to normalize the network.

I've got a good chunk of the existing coins, have been staking every day, am right now, and I'll continue to.
216  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [UNO] Unobtanium Info & Discussion - Miners Update to 0.10 on: May 11, 2015, 10:40:01 PM
So Windows users now have to use a different chain than linux users?
What if a Windows user wants to send some UNO to a linux user? Is this no longer supported?

Which chain is cryptsy using? Linux or Windows? Shouldn't UNO be renamed to UNO-L and UNO-W?

There's an update coming soon. Just temporarily avoid sending funds as a precaution until you install the new version.
217  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: May 11, 2015, 09:54:25 PM
Gold is tangible asset. Hard to convince older generation to hold bitcoin.

My Dad will be 86 in weeks and he holds some Bitcoin. Yes, I took care of the technical stuff, but he's enthusiastic about it and calls me up to tell me about what he read about it in the Times.  Cheesy
218  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: May 11, 2015, 08:00:21 AM

Sounds good to me.  I would like to see the fee be around the equivalent of $10 per transaction.  That is about what I set my client to pay and it's worth every penny to me.  In a busy year I may do 10 native transactions or so.  In a dry one (like 2015 so far) the number of transactions I perform drops to zero.

Trying to figure out why you would do this, even if you apparently almost never use Bitcoin.  Huh

Buying one (01) UNO in celebration of hitting block 600,000!

Join me ~ !

I couldn't help myself and bought 4 more just a few blocks before it it 600,000 Smiley

Guys, give him a chance to do what he's working on. It sounds like he's in the midst of negotiations with another business and typically in that situation would not be able to disclose details, and the timeline for these things can change and be hard to predict.

I very much doubt he's had any real ROI from Nautiluscoin yet and the amount he's looking for is only going to happen with a major deal. You don't have to trust him personally to trust that he's going to want to turn a profit and so is not likely to walk away from it -- but is equally unlikely to want to promote it before it's ready.
