good work on the coin thus far. we are happy to be working with bitmark.

a recent discussion point from my group is wallet technology - is the BTM wallet going to be changed in the future to get a more simple system? something that is easy to use for people that are new to crypto has been suggested.

re: check points system, i feel that if it is deemed appropriate, then go with it, but if its not completely essential, dont create the extra workload ...

Our goal is to have hundreds, or thousands, of wallets and ways to interact with and store the currency. Consider the 'QT' to be a temporary then legacy interface which is enough for those used to crypto currency to get started. Most people's interactions with Bitmark will be through marking, pressing buttons on websites and transferring from service to service. Apps, browser wallets, alternative clients, we hope to have a wide range of them, and foster competition between design and experience specialists. There will likely always be a P2P daemon back bone network, but the last thing we want is for our friends and family to have their first encounter of cryptographic currency be a clunky unintuitive downloadable program, no currency, and to be required to jump through several hoops before being exposed to even the slightest utility.

Checkpoints, deferred to be discussed under separate cover Multi Signed Broadcasted Checkpoints.

I will be retiring for the day shortly as I've been preparing things for the last 26 hours. Not before releasing an updated client however Smiley

This is absolutely the way forward - simplicity | security | usability - this will aid adoption. We can often forget just how 'ignorant' the mainstream are about cryptocurrency - it is all geeks, smoke, and mirrors to them.

Get some rest - you deserve it...  Smiley

We are getting to the 50/50 point regarding the ANN. We should meet half way and partially update it to include pertinent information. Cryptozim has offered to help in the process.

IMPORTANT

Should we implement peercoin's check pointing in this release?

I know it has been seen as contentious, however all checkpoints come from the repository owner (me) any way, this allows me to update checkpoints without rebuilding the client.

More importantly it means all nodes on the network have recent checkpoints without downloading or rebuilding a release, including exchanges and mining pools.

Please advise and discuss.

I personally have no trepidation over the implementation of check pointing. Mark you have earned my trust and I have full confidence in your abilities as a developer. I understand your unwavering commitment to quality and thus I am in support of this option.

Echo this ^^^

Burden?!

Absolutely not...

85  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Bitmark on: August 18, 2014, 02:42:37 PM
I am easily confused. For the sake of clarity;

Mark - I asked previously if direct BTM would help. You answered here.

So, it is my understanding that you require cold hard 'cash' i.e. BTC for developer loans. Is this still the case?

Correct.

The total is 8 BTC, 2.5 BTC received and 5.5 BTC still required. Half of it (4 BTC) is used for me to live on and provide basics for my family, the other half is used to acquire BTM to secure the loan repayments.

All going well through hard work and effort the value and adoption of Bitmark will grow considerably, reflecting in the price, and leaving me with BTM profit after paying the loans which I can trade up and down to self fund perpetually. That is in the most fortunate of case. In the worst case it ensures full time work on the project for another 40 days to produce and roll out marking, and no loss to anybody who loans.

Thank you - exactly as I thought.

I am going through my 'bags' of altcoins - any that I can shift to raise some BTC particles, I will pass your way (don't get too excited though!).

Edit: Mark's response hit just before mine and, of course, refers to the IPM.

So now we're already 250% up on when I posted. I think funding may now be impossible Sad

Funding is still possible if our community can come together and provide donations. Mark you have brought us together and this is the least we can do for you. Besides, donations will facilitate your ability to continue working hard for us "Protect Bitmark" and our future Marking initiative.

I hope the community sees the value in Donating the required Funds. Mark's work is a direct reflection of BTM's earned value. By funding the project you are also directly funding your personal BTM investments.

If we(miners with 15mhs and more) all give just ONE BTM per day to the foundation, thats it!
That is possible and 1BTM doesnt make us reach......

So people lets donate to this great project....

Regards to all

Firstly, as I see it; what Mark really needs is cold hard BTC to pay bills, meet expenses etc. to enable him to throw all his time at making Bitmark what it deserves to be. Passing 1 BTM each miner is an honourable proposal but I do not believe this is what Mark truly requires.

How about this for a fund raising idea. Either an official pool where all the profits go to Mark or failing that make an agreement with one of the existing pools to allow us to have an option in our account to donate a % of our coins to the foundation (on top of the existing pool fee).

As an example, say xHash allows us to donate 0.5% on top of their 1% pool fee.  They lose nothing, in fact they probably gain a heap of hashpower as we would all mine there, which equals more profits. A win-win situation.  If the idea flies, please make it an mpos pool, I hate the lack of stat feedback in nomp pools.

Another good idea but for the fact that we should really continue to spread our mining across the active pools.

Problems on miningpool.com? de3 down - us4 seems live but not sure?

Update 14:22 Switched to xhash for time being as strange stats coming back from miningpool - hope gets sorted soon.

I don't know if withdrawals are completely frozen or not but anyone who has money in Bter should strongly consider getting it all out if you can. They lost 50 million NXT and things are not looking good.

Thanks Este - remembered I had .02 Btc there - now out. Shame there were no signs that mywl.it was going to disappear! That and coinex.pw a few months ago and I'm not faring very well...

 Roll Eyes

Perhaps in the future we could spend some time on creating a distributed secure exchange, previously I have modelled and coded such a thing, it would need more work. It's something to think about, maybe early next year.

In the interim today's events have prompted me to with Poloniex and we have came up with some approaches to further mitigate risks and tighten security - although it is already very good.

1. Each week Busoni and I will speak for a short time, to update checkpoints, ensure their code is rebuilt, and notify of any changes to the code.

2. At this time they are going to inform us of the total combined amount of BTM they hold for all users, so we can see if people are using the exchange as a web wallet. If this does happen then we can try to advise our community as to the benefits of securing their own currency, and also find out their requirements to make real secure web or mobile wallets to manage funds.

3. We have agreed that I will anonymously enquire on technical forums and stackexchange as to the most secure server and daemon setup's, there are various approaches to holding wallets and storing currency, I have proposed some alternatives to them, and we now seek to identify the benefits of each, with peer review, so that they may make the best decisions.

Funding Update
A total of 2.5 BTC has now been committed to me, out of the 8 BTC target. Thank You to both of those who have displayed such confidence and faith in both the project and I.

These are excellent points and great news on the funding update.

To the wider populus, business community, would be adopters; unregulated and decentralised (and, dare I add, anonymity) seem to be synonymous with insecure and poorly supported / protected.

Truly addressing security vulnerabilities is one part, as is user awareness. The average fiat user of online services takes comfort and confidence from the various banking and credit card systems 'guarantees' and fraud protection - cryptocurrency, as yet, has none... one day, perhaps?

Androidicus, and others, thank you for your offer of BTM.

Let us discuss it.

My aim is to acquire BTM from those who do not see value in it or treat it as a short term investment, short term miners, day traders, etcetera. I would rather soak up that BTM than risk the valuable BTM of community members, as this would create both downwards pressure on markets and put two sets of BTM on the market, that which already is, and that which would normally be being held.

I may also add that by holding acquired BTM I can increase the value of the currency as a whole, I can also trade a portion to further increase holdings of both BTM and BTC, and hopefully provide enough to not only pay back the loans, but also to have some of my own holdings, and a budget to trade with. By doing so I would be able to fairly self fund further development without the need for measures such as those proposed.

Finally, if I took up all the offers of BTM loans I have had, I would temporarily be the biggest 'whale', and would prefer to avoid that. Simple day trading and off market acquisition in the direction of purchasing I am happy with, and see almost zero risk in - worst case I am holding a lot of BTM, exactly the thing I hope to achieve. Gambling large amounts of my supportive community's valuable BTM in the direction of selling, feels like too much risk for me to take on, imagine if somebody acquired it and bumped the price beyond where I could buy it back? No BTM, no funds for the loans, it would be a mess.

I hope that makes sense, and would value the communities input on this.

I see where you are coming from...

If I had venture capital on tap this whole situation would be a no brainer!
92  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Bitmark on: August 15, 2014, 08:41:42 AM

The terms offered are 60 days maximum until repayment, 10% interest if repayment is in BTC, 15% if repayment is taken in BTM.

Half will be used to purchase BTM, half will be used fund my time - food and such basics for home. I am confident that within 45 days the price tag of BTM will be double, through hard work full time from myself and others.

Are straight BTM any use to partially negate your need to use 50% of any BTC loan to buy BTM thereby freeing up some BTC for essential expenses?

I can put approx 5k BTM into the 'loan' pot on the terms stated if this would help?
93  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Bitmark on: August 13, 2014, 01:31:58 PM

Thank you.

I have updated the list of pools on the OP, and also on the soon to be released website Smiley

Did anyone else catch that, "Soon to be released website"  Grin

Sure did!

Shame I'm on 2 weeks holiday! Less time than when I'm working - how does that work?!
94  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: MyWl.lt - Online Wallet Service - VOTE FOR YOUR COIN (Round 3) on: August 11, 2014, 07:42:32 AM
That's what I've heard. The guy disappeared. Pretty sure it's not malicious or any sort of scam. He was a pretty upstanding guy. Maybe illness or worse. This was a really nice online wallet and I'll miss it. Problem with some of these things is that they're done well and function well, but they live and die with one person.

TT

Yes - I agree with that - but why did the site disappear then the DNS dropped? Seems strange unless renewal was missed?

This is one of the fundamental issues in cryptocurrency - there can be a fantastic service that gains popularity and trust because it has value BUT if it is essentially one man band with no backup it can just disappear without trace or explanation - users' first cry will be 'scam' even if there is a perfectly reasonable explanation and, of course, there is no path for recourse.

Can't believe not more posts on this - in view of dev's DGC connection and Richard Branson being one of many high profile twitter followers...

Incedently - cannot find their twitter feed now!

 Sad

So after all the fine words - just another scammer?

What a shame... Yet another shining example of crypto integrity and trust.

97  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: MyWl.lt - Online Wallet Service - VOTE FOR YOUR COIN (Round 3) on: August 08, 2014, 06:42:48 AM
What is the problem with mywl.lt ?!

The problem is that you trusted your coins to some other person's wallet.

Very constructive, helpful response - thank you...

Easy, why not just feed in the cost from NiceHash to rent?

Massive fluctuation when new scrypt coins launch? Do you feel it is a good representative value?

It is a good idea to feed it in, perhaps we could take the average cost over different leasing providers, and also for some common and new rigs, then average it out?

Yeah, I think it's solid. Spikes won't be more than a few hours with how short mining is on some of those coins.

However, I agree if you could feed in another source:

LeaseRig.net has a ticker and is closer to your value:

Avg. For Last 20 rentals: 0.00103203 BTC/MH/day

Also:
www.miningrigrentals.com
scryptery.com

Another way would be to determine the cost based on power rate at 0.082 + average hardware cost for that hash rate, averaged over X months (not sure what would be appropriate).

Nice response!

If somebody would like to buy a domain and host it, say 'miningcosts.com' or something, I would be happy to make the foundation of a website where people could view and add their hashing costs for each algorithm. It would be interesting to see, and also useful data.

Production cost is very important, if a currency strays too far above it too quickly we know what happens, it also stops people paying over the odds in 'pump and dumps'.

For Bitmark, it would improve the quality of data we receive and give, in this instance to miners/traders/investors, and most pertinently the original question, how to provide a fair average price for businesses/users/services to use on a daily basis. This one

Code:
User Price = (5 Day Average Production Cost + 3 Day Average Market Price) / 2

another discussion topic I was thinking about invoices, I saw a QR code on a bill last week...

I can hang the sub domain 'miningcosts' on one of my domains if this will help? No cost option!  Smiley

IRC channel promotion: tipbot, quizbot, trivia, marks give-aways, irc channel promo on other channels - https://trello.com/c/3lwwcU5z/31-irc-channel-promotion

Giving tips when you feel somebody has earned them (marking) by IRC sounds great.

It may be a fault of mine but I see little merit in novelty things, it's good to have other people around to balance this.

What benefits come from quiz bots and trivia?

What benefits come from give-aways?

My only point is that marks are reputation, to be earned, that gives them their value. To give them away freely (unless to enable usage), feels like it may be detrimental?

Well winning them via a trivia/quiz bot would count as earning I think. And giving some away to new users would fall under the enabling usage category I think.

Reasonable, perhaps we enable marking in some simple ways, then give-away marks for people to use?

...and per majority of Bookmakers: "Make your first deposit of 100 Marks and we'll double it up!" etc. Encourages acquisition in the first instance then usage...

On another tack, iro Marking:

Aspirations of "Marking" adoption!
