Well don't think anyone would like to be a tree.

If I could choose which type and where, I'd love to be a tree.

Well enjoy then I guess.  Would be pretty much the same as being dead IMO though.

Is it so special to be a human, I'm not sure really...

Let's see.  One is backed by the best-selling book every year without fail since the printing press was invented with over a billion followers worldwide and whose life was so transformative that we measure dates by it and the other is backed by an atheist trying to make a point to a school board 7 years ago.  I think I'll take my chances with Christ.

Since when something being popular has made it right?

If Islam overtakes the christians do you convert to it because it must be the more advanced and correct belief just because it has more followers?

Wow, are we really that bored with talking about bitcoins that this is deemed interesting??!!  This is currently one of 2 'god' topics that currently make up 2/3rds of blockchained's top 10 bitcointalk topics!!

...and I'll second the person who suggested this belongs in 'Off Topic' because it has nothing to do with bitcoins.

Other > Politics & Society... Isn't this already a off topic forum for serious talk and the Off Topic is for the non-serious talk.
344  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What should be the Goal(s) of Government? on: October 30, 2013, 11:45:37 AM
Protect citizens from internal and external threats, be that individuals , larger entities like other governments and corporations or natural threats.
Provide minimal basic needs of citizens, health, nutrion and shelter.

And then positive extras:
Provide important infrastructure to support commerce
Provide important basic and/or advanced training for citizens

Only use paypal between your creditcard and shop receiving funds. Is my take.

I have heard the same story many times. No point letting them to hold your funds on their account.

Certain parts of religion such as xmas, diwali, eid etc are good and are enjoyed by millions.

Even atheists enjoy xmas with friends and family because it is something that people tend to celebrate regardless of whether they are devout church goers.

Yeah, I do celebrate the Winter Solstice with a good dinner, and enjoy the gifts. Cheesy

True, there is nothing wrong with good old pagan traditions as long as we understand that they are such.

And if evolution doesn't try to explain the beginning of life, why does it try to explain anything at all? Why start explaining a subject half way through it's time-line?

Because it's useful? That is like saying that Newtonian physics are not good because we don't know where mass comes from...
348  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The Origin of the Human DNA on: October 29, 2013, 07:49:55 PM
Whenever I ponder evolution, I can never get my head round the basics. People always debating the finer technicalities of it, but the simple question of 'can something come from nothing?' always baffles me. Any evolutionist I have spoken to has attempted to explain it but always leads to me asking...where did that come from? to which he answers and I reply, and where did that come from? eventually it comes to the point that the evolutionist states 'we don't currently know the answer to that yet, but technological advancements will explain that one day', which leads me to the conclusion that the foundation of evolution right now is based on blind faith that technology will one day answer how 'something came from nothing'. That's why the finer details of macro and micro evolution are immaterial, why discuss the finer details when there is currently no foundation for the theory?

I'm very willing to entertain good explanations for this, as I would genuinely like to learn....not anti-evolution here...

On other hand the explanations offered by creationist and such are worse. And don't really answer a the questions either...

With evolution certain parts of system get more ordered, but in total entropy increases?

There is energy spend in evolution, that energy can't be reclaimed and it dissipates.

Well, if certain species evolve to the point, when they are capable of destroying the whole civilization, then if they actually do destroy themselves, the overall entropy would increase or stay the same. But what if they evolve beyond the point of surviving on a single planet and move to the stars?

You can use energy to do work, but you still lose some energy, that the entropy. Evolution can be seen as work done. And as whole for on large scale the entropy increases, energy get's used and eventually no more of it can be used.
350  Economy / Economics / Re: Technological unemployment is (almost) here on: October 29, 2013, 04:49:22 PM
For Finland it seems that there is job offers only for 10% of jobless. And even in that 10% are lot of jobs offers that aren't real, such as various agencies gathering info and maybe offering workers to companies or spots for phone salesman and such...

So there is lack of work, not workers.

I believe there was a bloke named Jesus.

I believe he was overloaded with charisma.

I don't believe he was magical tho

I'm more inclined to there being a roman named Paul who was rather good at telling stuff...

What is the name of that fundamental force that pushes simple elements into the shape and interaction of the DNA structure?

Evolution.

Countless variations and permutations amino acids came into being and faded away until one worked: "the shape and interaction of the DNA structure".

I guess somebody could calculate the likelihood of such machines being assembled without conscious help.
Why? There was no time limit. The universe existed for billions of years before life evolved on earth. It doesn't seem unreasonable to me that the right combination of circumstances needed for life to develop occurred during within that time frame.

Even if you do believe that ten billion years isn't long enough, consider that this might not be the first incarnation of the universe. Perhaps the universe cycled through several Big Bangs and Big Crunches, existing empty and lifeless before we came along.

Also one must consider the scale of universe... There is 10^(22-24) stars in universe. And next consider that we even now know 170 systems with exoplanets. From which I consider that there is quite many systems with planets. My understanding that our current discovery method doesn't work quite well for small rocky planets such as Earth. So there is likely large number of suitable planets around in universe.

In scale of Universe the life doesn't seem very unlikely when you combine the size and the lifespan...

It's really interesting how evolution isn't accepted, but breeding is. That is the micro and macro evolution...

And the outside force always have the problem of where did it come and how it came to existence. And I can't really accept either always existed or randomly popped out nowhere...
355  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The Origin of the Human DNA on: October 28, 2013, 04:01:05 PM
Not from apes, but common ancestor... I can't really pick that one...

Too bad there is lot of bad dudes among is followers...

That guy never made sense to me... Previously he was evil, then he was good, by the most weird logic, sending himself to save the people he judged... Or something...

So no, I don't believe in him, just like I don't believe in various other beings such as Santa Clause, Easter Bunny, Xenu, Spaghetti monster, IPU and the teapot and so on...

Self-reliance? How?

I'm sure that majority of population can't be self-reliant. There isn't just land and resources for low efficency food production. And then there is the other basics needs.

So the options are either some form of social security or worse safety...
359  Other / Politics & Society / Re: How a Small Country Could Convert Their National Currency to Bitcoin on: October 25, 2013, 11:21:20 AM
Wouldn't the results of that operation be quite catastrophic in midway? And would people really trust a person who already debased his currency ones?
360  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Swiss to vote on 2,500 franc basic income for every adult on: October 17, 2013, 11:11:18 AM
In reality the likes of programmers and much before that income don't gain anything from basic income. Atleast if the system isn't totally crazy. Their tax burden is increase by the amount of basic income.
Wrong, if it is implemented so, it would be a total disaster.

Basic income is basic income is basic income.

If you "give it but take it back" it is just like not giving it, i.e. just like the systems we already have and do not work.

Basic income should be used with some tax restructure. As such the "high" income people end up not gaining anything from it.

The overall gains come from simplifying the bloated bureaucracy of current system. It's simpler to pay people money and then take it away with taxes, than the current messes we have.

In my mind: Point isn't giving everyone free money. But to simplify the welfare system and remove some cases where working doesn't increase the standard of living.
