661  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [03-24-2015] Bitcoin Exchange Cryptoine Hacked Due To Trading Engine Bug on: March 27, 2015, 01:37:21 AM
Their website says they have decided to close.

https://cryptoine.com/

2015-03-26 08:36 UTC

We apologize everyone, and thank you all for your understanding.

Attacker acted in hours from 3:15 to 10:00 UTC.

Cryptoine database is reversed to 2015-03-24 03:08 UTC and frozen.

In response to many questions...

There was no break-in to the system
There was no leak of data
Wallet private keys are safe and not compromised
The attacker was not able to execute any external code
The bug has been located and fixed. However, the losses are irreversible. We plan to complete the activity of exchange.

We will enable withdrawals in April 2015.

It's sad to say goodbye to all crypto-community. We need to take a few months break. But we will back stronger and more experienced than ever before.

I'm a bit lost, did any customers lose money?   If so how is it being handled?

[edit]

ohhhh, I got it, no customer's lost money but someone got "in" and 'acted' like there were funds where there were no funds.

glad there was no real funds lost.

[double edit]

We will enable withdrawals in April 2015.

It's sad to say goodbye to all crypto-community. We need to take a few months break. But we will back stronger and more experienced than ever before.

Our hot wallets was drained, coins: bitcoin, litecoin, urocoin, dogecoin, bitcoinscrypt, magi, darkcoin, dogecoindark, cannabis

All coins that we have, will be returned to users. Coins stolen - in correspondingly smaller quantities.

We had wallets in the ratio 60%/40% (hot/cold).

And the drama continues. How can you even compare some altcoin exchange, dealing in its own altcoin to Gox?

simple, Gox was the major force in the early beginnings that made BTCs rate fly through the roof, so from $10 to $1000 was mainly gox.   And on the other side of things, the downward performance of btc in 2014 was mainly gox.   2015 is the first real time gox is not a major part of the direction of btc

It was obvious nearly a year before Mt. Gox officially closed shop that they were having problems.  Anyone who didn't recognize the obvious signs and get out quick was either greedy or a fool.

Death and taxes are a certainty, sure, but so are the greedy and the foolish.  People should have known long ago not to go near anything Garza touches.

The part I highlighted was spot on!

667  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [03-25-2015] Titanium Comics – World’s First Comic Book Publisher To Accept Bitc on: March 26, 2015, 06:08:21 PM
Saying you take Bitpay is not really the same as saying you take bitcoin.

The credit goes to Bitpay for getting a new account not to Titanium Comics for accepting bitcoin, because they don't accept it without the processor.  What they accept is fiat, fiat that they receive after the processor turns the btc into fiat that they accept.

As for this:
Good publicity, not very constructive for bitcoin. They are using BitPay (again). I wish stores could have a little more faith in bitcoin and hold them longer.

The fact that they use BitPay doesn't mean they're dumping it straight away Wink

I think it does.

The point of bitpay is to get a specific value for your merchandise not higher or lower value.

669  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [03-22-2015] When Does Bitcoin Become Money? on: March 26, 2015, 05:32:37 PM
http://btcfeed.net/news/when-does-bitcoin-become-money/

Many Bitcoin enthusiasts already see Bitcoin as just another form of money. And this is  partially true, as you can use Bitcoin to pay for goods and services, both online and offline. However, the mainstream masses seem to associate Bitcoin with a “currency” at best, and “fake internet money” in the worst case scenario. But when will Bitcoin actually become money?

,,,...

You must first define the word "money" so we could debate if bitcoin is money or not.

I think bitcoin is money.  It is both a commodity and a currency, the distinction come with usage.  When you buy and sell it on an exchange it is a commodity, however when you used it to buy or sell something else, that is where it is a means of exchange (of that "something else") as such is a currency.

To the extent that BTC is used more as a commodity than a currency it is a low store of value, to the extent that it is not directly tied to any govt, company, or entity it has low store of value, and to the extent that it is associated with the underclass of world society it has a low store of value; change those things and you suddenly increase security, and faith in the instrument to the extent that people will use it more as a currency than a commodity.  When that happens it will become stable.  The more stable the currency is, the less attractive it will be as a commodity and more attractive it will be as a currency.

I know I was told the block chain can hold an infinte amount of data but I still can't wrap my head around that much less how long it would take to download all of that data when the time comes to get a wallet.

My mind refuses to see all of this blockchain usage as a good thing.

673  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [03-22-2015] Coinbase Hits 2.1m Users Milestone on: March 26, 2015, 04:57:05 PM
http://btcfeed.net/news/coinbase-hits-2-1m-users-milestone/

According to some recent statistics publicly displayed on the Coinbase website, the company is claiming to have 2.1 million users. That is quite a staggering number for a company that has been founded in July of 2012, even though we had seen a tremendous growth in users on a monthly basis. But are these numbers true or fake?

...

Firstly, coinbase has two separate interests, the coinbase that started first and the coinbase exchange. I don't know which entity this is addressing or both. Considering that the article spoke about 'merchants' it clearly involves the first coinbase. I think this is referring to both of coinbase concerns.

Anyway, a user need not be a natural person, it very easily could be a business, so that one person could have many different business accounts. Additionally and probably more the case is larger companies are using coinbase to pay employees and vendors so yeah they may sign up for an account but for many of them simply another atm card attached to their demand account.

Lastly, not long ago coinbase has a referral program that paid both parties $5 in btc if someone made a referral and conducted a $100+ transaction. You know when that many parents and siblings were signed up unbeknownst to them.

Nevertheless Coinbase purposely refrained from early crazy growth. I think their true customer base is about 300K active customers.

good post, sorry to see Canadian CC exchanges dying like that, yeah, I always wondered why a biz in financial trouble would not seek to sell at fire sale value than for nothing at all. There is a lot of money, time, and energy that goes into starting a business of any kind, once you get to a point where you have a community base the company has value beyond the raw numbers.

Anyway, Coinsquare is welcome to become a PICISI sponsor.

http://btcfeed.net/news/bitcoin-exchange-cryptoine-hacked-due-to-trading-engine-bug/

The stressful times for Bitcoin exchanges around the world will not come to an end anytime soon, as we learned earlier today that the Cryptoine platform has been hacked. Not too many details have been made available at this point in time, but we will recap the information we managed to obtain so far.

Wow, it's obvious that Cryptoine was really pro-security, I'm really sorry to hear this took place, I encourage them to seek outside auditors to do security checks to help reveal weaknesses.

Here's a simple note, slow things down to a relative craw when it come to withdrawing funds. Make sure that all of the debits and credits are in order before releasing funds.

If someone is able to manipulate the books that means the books can be manipulated, there's got to be an absolute check and balance system so that everything makes sense.

Then when you find the hacker, shoot him, or her.

...

Anycoin Direct is invited to be the official exchange sponsor for PICISI.

PICISI is a crowd funding platform (not yet launched) that accepts fiat and cryptocurrency for donations to campaigns.

The PICISI motto is "Promotion, Promotion, Promotion" our intent is to pay people located all over the world to do assignments for us and to pay them with PICISI issued token, then when we receive fees in fiat to use those funds to buy the PICISI issued tokens at the exchange of our official sponsor.  This will draw many people to the exchange because we will buy at prevailing rates to the full extent of our resources on a regular basis.

Since the token will be tied to an actual business that uses the tokens on a regular basis the value should be strong and relatively stable.

I forgive you for not including PICISI because it hasn't actually launched as of yet, however really should be on the list considering that it seeks to bridge intercoin relationships while paving a way for the wider world of fiat users to be introduced to cryptocurrency in a very friendly and practical way without the user being technically savvy, downloading any wallets, or opening a exchange account.

But we better be on the next one.   Grin

sound like ridiculous things.
Quote
The terrorists used CASH to purchase some of the stuff they needed--no doubt these murderers were also shod and clothed and used  cell phones, cars, and public sidewalks during the planning and execution of their mayhem.   Why not restrict their use?  A naked , barefoot terrorist without communications is surely less effective than a fully clothed and equipped one.
The banning will has huge impact on ppl's daily life.

"Huge Impact" really?

Come on, how many times does someone that doesn't have access to credit/debit cards and checks need more than 1000 euros to in their "DAILY" lives?

The law sucks because it is driving cash a way under some false pretense, nevertheless it really should cause too much of a disruption in the lives of the overwhelming majority of people.

The last time I made a purchase of over $1K cash wasn't too long ago but I only did it about 3x in the whole year of 2014, and every single time was because I didn't want the cash, I could have easily used one of the cards and gotten rewards points too.
