That is a really good movie, I have to see it again soon.

Yes, Das Boot is great, genuine suspense, just like Wall Observer. In this metaphor I picture Bitcoin ATH as the surface, and we are all in this sub together as it dives, suspense increases the deeper she goes. The FUD are depth charges detonating close to the hull, government destroyers circle around at the surface, everyone braces...ping...ping...sonar searching...silence...phew, over for now....still here.

The only thing I didn't like was the ending, did she have to sink?

IIRC, she doesn't sink until they abandon her at the harbor (guess that would be true for Bitcoin as well if everyone stopped using it).

Testing 31k over and over, will she hold?

On the bright side, at least Arriemoller's glockenspiel is free from nettles, glad that's over.

Hey Arrie, how are prickly Pete and the twins doing this morning?

Hello Homer
Just fine, thanks for asking.

I have sent an email to the "Wallet of Satoshi" support asking if there's a way to get "permanent receive address" which can take more than one payment, and also how long these Lightning addresses last. Waiting for reply.

Got reply...

Quote
When it comes to normal Lightning Invoices, that is not possible as they are one-use only.
The Invoices we generate in Wallet of Satoshi have an expiry time of 24 hours.
(That is configurable at the node level so some other services invoices may be less or more).

There are a couple of solutions on the protocol level in the works for the use case you mentioned, but unsure about how far away they are.

For something that works right now, tippin.me is a good service where you have a unique url and it generates a new 0-amount invoice each time you refresh the page.
When you have built up some tips you could then withdraw them all in one go to your wallet.
Good thing is that it's all on the lightning network so fees are extremely low.

Apparently tippin.me works similar to lnbits.com, haven't tested (yet), both supporting LNURLp (as tested here).

China about to go full North Korea?

Pretty much: Remember that China can simply start executing citizens with Bitcoin, torturing them, declaring them "enemies of the state". If there is one thing China/NK has it's a lot of people, so an individual person doesn't mean much.

It's too bad, I'm sure China is about ready to introduce their own Govt backed shitcoin, but really who would want a coin backed by torture and human suffering?

But that's the way it goes. Hope China has fun staying poor.....

I agree about the trend but have a slightly less sinister view; people are useful labor for China, and forced labor cost nothing. So, it seems more likely the citizens caught with Bitcoin will start producing iPhones for Foxconn (or similar), joining the existing 500k workers in that one factory who work over 6 days per week, 12 hour shifts, and earn USD$20 on average per week. Last time I checked BOM cost, Apple adds roughly 400% markup on the iPhones produced when sold retail.

China is afraid of change, I think cryptocurrencies they have a no control over was bit too much for them to handle right now. As someone pointed out, big mistake, as Bitcoin moves "decentralized" away from exchanges instead, then they will have even less control.
188  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: June 21, 2021, 11:55:28 AM

At Binance, 15min view, within 6 hours there have been 4 volume dips with over 4k BTC (2 of them over 6k BTC), and Bitcoin refuses to sink. I'm not an experienced trader, but looks like serious resistance a bit over USDT 30k.
189  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: June 21, 2021, 11:27:46 AM
Prepair for total doom.

One major sell-off shaking out the weakest hands on Earth.

I'm watching, and sure, current rate sucks, but look at the resistance around 30k, that's bullish to me.
190  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: June 21, 2021, 10:08:19 AM
Really, another China ban?

People panic sell and tweet deleted after?

Apparently the FUD still works even after so many times.

This shows how pathetic the market still is.

Oh well, Coca-Cola lost billions in market value after Ronaldo switched a bottle of Coca-Cola with water. Undecided

You would think people see through government propaganda by now, after decades of disinformation and lies, but they don't. I want to see fast adoption world wide, but still think anyone completely trusting a government is too gullible for Bitcoin.

How many confirmations are needed to send yourself 1mm sats on the LN?

None, the channel exist already. When the LN channel is opened sometime before sending there will be Bitcoin on-chain confirmations for the multisig addresses created which later when closed will be a net total of all LN transactions within. The way I understood it now, after reading some more, segwit is only used when a legacy wallet is involved, with bech32 (multisig) wallet it is not needed, but could be wrong, still learning.

little reminder....

Btw can someone make he meme and post it here ??  Grin

This means the lightning network absolutely HAS to work.

This is the moment of truth.

I think very few realize how absolutely important this fact is

This is the reason I have been doing what I have been doing since it came up... I had the 177th node on the network (I just retired it.. too hard to freaking maintain).  I cannot code, but I have been testing and learning.
I honestly wonder how much use it is currently getting.

The other ugly truth is MOST of the transactions that are happening in BTC are happening OFF THE CHAIN.

This is hard for me to explain, but it just hit me, on a new level, how incredibly important this is.

As people opt in to Bitcoin and want to get exposure to the asset they are doing this through custodians.  It is very rare that even the members of this forum really take responsibility for their coins.  When I first started using Bitcoin to play poker I would never leave my coins on the poker site even.  And the ONLY reason an exchange EVER touched any of my coins was for trading.

When you but bitcoin on ____________ there is no transaction on the chain (unless it's Bisq)  And may traders buy and sell tons without ever really leaving the exchange.

I am just babbling.  I will stop.  But it's time for the decentralized transaction layers to start to rev their engines...

Wow... here we go.

Agreed, but more like Lightning is tied into the chain, not completely "off chain". (Loosely I view it a bit like an on-chain Bitcoin transaction with one confirmation security wise.)

Lightning is bullish as hell in my opinion, transactions at the speed of internet, channels locked into the Bitcoin blockchain via segwit, with taproot on the horizon increasing privacy and more (DLCs etc).

From my limited testing so far Lightning is definitely how I envisioned Bitcoin as a currency used by merchants and services. I think classic on-chain Bitcoin wallets will continue to be used as it is today, eg. savings/investment and unregulated "bank wire transfer" done right. I'm happy about the future for Bitcoin, but also think the whole world will benefit, finally we can move towards one planet and one human race instead of silly countries with all the bullshit limitations and friction that imposes. The future starts with a real common currency, go Bitcoin!

PS: While writing this post BTC/USD rate went up through the view of the browser tab (on the way to punch a hole through the top corner of my monitor), so perhaps a bit overly positive, and again, maybe not.

MSM Narrative:

"China imposing bitcoin mining crackdown, forcing large miners to shut down"

Reality:

"China insiders subsidizing large miners to temporarily turn off hash power. Will tell them to resume when insider whales have scooped up enough cheap coins."

AKA I'm not buying into this "China miner crackdown FUD BS" for an instant.  Grin

Their actions in that propaganda SCMP video ending with Bitcoin miners in handcuffs remind me of the old days when China tried to impress the west (increasing their WTO rating) by destroying massive amounts of copy DVDs with road rollers. Sure, it looked impressive, but still not that much considering total total amount of pirated DVD.

The question is; are they acting once again under diplomatic pressure to improve US relations?

I have sent an email to the "Wallet of Satoshi" support asking if there's a way to get "permanent receive address" which can take more than one payment, and also how long these Lightning addresses last. Waiting for reply.

Not directly. But there are additional services that enable very similar functionality such as lnurl-pay. One example: https://lnbits.com/lnurlp/48, "The link or QR code is fixed, but each time it is read by a compatible wallet a new QR code is issued by the service."

Thanks for the tip, tried it out.

I created a wallet at https://lnbits.com which requires no registration, just need to enter a name for a wallet to create it at top of page. The wallet security (once added) seems to be lacking regarding losing your wallet (due to browser crash or similar), so I suggest to copy and paste the wallet keys seen under "API info" along with the full browser URL (with 'usr' and 'wal' parts) somewhere safe. The full browser URL is all you need to own the wallet, so be careful not sharing that. In my opinion, security doesn't really matter when it's about really small payments, any amount which is no problem to lose, remember to empty wallet often.

Next step is to click "Manage extensions", scroll down, and enable 'LNURLp' (there are several LNURL extensions, so make sure it's exactly this one), then select the extension and click on "NEW PAY LINK", fill out the data, select your wallet, uncheck fixed amount if you want "min" and "max" limits, enter description, there are more stuff you can add here if needed, and then add it with "CREATE PAY LINK".

In my test:

LNURL: LNURL1DP68GURN8GHJ7MRWVF5HGUEWVDHK6TMVDE6HYMRS9ASHQ6F0WCCJ7MRWW4EXCTENXGCQMT2JE 2

The "sharable link" is probably easier to deal with, get QR code there as well: https://lnbits.com/lnurlp/320

I scanned the QR code with "Wallet of Satoshi", the description you entered shows up, kind of cool.

Then a few seconds after sending, looked like this in lnbits wallet in the browser:

After this I tried to send 10 sats (wallet had 15 sats at that point) using a "PASTE REQUEST" from the lnbits wallet back to the "Wallet of Satoshi", it worked as long as the Lightning invoice created has a fixed amount.

EDIT:

Added the sharable link LNURL as "Website URL:" here in the forum profile, perhaps a nice addition to the merit system, when you want to throw sats at someones post as well.

I get an error in all of my 3 LN wallets when trying to paste this address (invalid character?).

That "invoice" has been been paid already by me, seems to expire after receiving a payment, not sure about the error you got, but when I tried using "Wallet of Satoshi" to pay again now it looks like this:

Also, as I mentioned before, LN address needs to be one line in the clipboard when pasting, not split by new lines (the developers of the wallet should fix this, easily done, strip LF chars).

I have sent an email to the "Wallet of Satoshi" support asking if there's a way to get "permanent receive address" which can take more than one payment, and also how long these Lightning addresses last. Waiting for reply.

Thanks, really useful.

I tried "Wallet of Satoshi" for fun, do you know if the lightning receive address generated each time expire after a while? Since you have no control over channels, would be interesting to know.

EDIT:

This was more fun than expected, talk about speed.

cAPSLOCK,

Post an LN address, want to send some "SatMerit" for your post (ran out of sMerit).
You're welcome! I'm still learning. For example I don't know much yet about the different types of lightning addresses or I should say invoice types, and I think there's a way that you can make a static one for something like a tip. But I am not 100% sure how but here's one that takes a long time to expire. And again I ended up using wallet of Satoshi because it's just a good implementation. But I'm glad you enjoyed trying it.

And your questions about how they handle expiration are good ones that I don't have solid answers to yet. Their default expiration though is quite long I think this is a whole day?

lnbc1psvuz26pp5pedga2d2ps3n6c3t2nfdmz0mm5ve9ldjjhq4k7l3kk6cv02hmhnsdqu2askcmr9w ssx7e3q2dshgmmndp5scqzpgxqyz5vqsp559lk0jgepd3qum2ezp9nzz52v6qzf7umk7fmxn72xrpkg h56366s9qyyssq88a9q0aqk8kfxk7v6z7c0xn3ple9lkfrhyeddf3wdvpz4p6kshk4g8wdwuw0cx73l nssk5ta242phvsgmk8edr0sfut8legaavypnzqqlqrfg4

Thanks again. Sent 555 sat(merit)s, hope it worked. Wink  The "Wallet of Satoshi" requires one line when pasting address (did not strip line feeds when split).
197  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: June 19, 2021, 12:04:15 PM
I have bewen performing some fairly deep tests on the state of all lightning wallets currently.  And though I would share a Mini Review

Custodial: You send bitcoin to these and then can use their lightning channels custodially.  Easiest setup.

Wallet of Satoshi 9/10
This is the leader in custodial wallets.
+Consistently low fees, even 0 sometimes (I do run a channel with them on my node so sending money back to my node is zero cost.)
+Very rare that Tx fail.  As in, I do not think I have seen it happen outside of pilot error.
+Allows ad-hoc transactions (will create an invoice with no amount)
+UI is decent
This is a wallet I would DEFINITELY have on my phone if I were traveling.  I believe they have a very good network of well connected nodes.  I run a channel to it on my node, so if I were experiencing routing issues or high fees from my node I might keep this one loaded from my node just to take advantage of the connectivity.

Coinos.io 8.5/10
+a web wallet version
+can do LIQUID!
+very reliable well connected lightning
-You have to be careful with managing your login

This one is really cool.  The only reason it is not tied for first is it is possible to send this thing a transaction to an anonymous not logged in user. Which is ACTUALLY a FEATURE.  It makes it able to be used with a little strange amount of privacy.  But if you accidently do this and not notice the random name it gives you (Satoshi-#####) then you will have to contact the folks who run it to refund your money as it will be in some random wallet.  This is more a ME problem than sn IT problem, though.

BlueWallet  5/10
-Fees are "OK" but could be 200-800 sats. Currently on chain is not much more.
-Payments still fail as much as they ever did
-Failed payments may appear to have worked and then fail later (yuck)
-There is a delay in returning sats from a failed tx.
-You can't easily spend bigger amounts

Whenever I get sats into this thing, I then work really hard to get them back off... lol It's like having hit your golfball onto a beach.  Even as a lightning wallet that has been around a while I find it klugey

Non-custodial Neutrino private channel (These run a full neutrino node, and establish a single channel to the wallet company) They are sort of a hybrid between a custodial wallet and a full node wallet.  Easier to set up, but has a little less smoothness than WoS, or Zeus for example

Phoenix  8/10
-Will handle ad-hoc amounts
-Cheap fees
-Can receive when in the background
-Good UI
Best in this class.  Solid.

Breez 7/10
+Similar to Phoenix but not quite as smooth
-Forces you to keep 600 sats there at all times (?)
+Can do micro payments to streaming podcasts and has a podcast PLAYER in it now.  Kinda neeto.
+Can work in POS mode
-I think this needs to be in the foreground on your device to receive payments.  Meh.  But just a little meh. Usually this is OK.

Muun 7/10
+Also similar to the two above
+nice UI
-Cannot do ad hoc amounts
-VERY unique backup strategy.

Non-Custodial connected to your node.
Hardest to set up.  You have to connect these to a real node.  You will be spending the money on THAT node so setup and maintenance is a bitch.  You have to manage and balance channels etc.  BUT, if you can do all this, it is also the most sovereign solution.

Zeus 9/10

+The nuts.
+great UI
+can do ad hoc amounts
+can do MPP!!!! (Multi path Payments.  I have actually not tried this yet.  But it's in there... Could be good when needing to send a large payment.

Zap 8/10
+Very similar to Zeus, but not quite as slick a UI
-And can't do ad hoc amounts.

So, say I was going to spend a week at Bitcoin beach.  I would load Zeus and WoS on my phone.  I would also have Strike standing by to drop more funds into my channels as needed (But if i spent all the money on my node, um, that would be a problem of some kind).  I would probably try to live out of Zeus, but if I had any trouble I would just keep WoS going.  Of all the wallets I feel like it is #1 in just payment ease.  And since I have a channel to it I can swing money to it for free from my node in 1 hop.  I was surprised that Bluewallet still stunk like it did when I first tried it... too bad.

Honorable mention.
Strike 8/10
I don't know how to classify this one.  It can work as a bitcoin wallet, a lightning wallet, and the cash app.  The lightning features are kind of hidden, but you CAN sent a payment to a lightning destination with it, in fact I use to to refill my channels from time to time.  I would not probably use it much on my trip, but I would certainly have it loaded as a sort of backup.

Thanks, really useful.

From Alcor's site:

Quote
Hal’s long-stated wishes were to come to Scottsdale once he lost the ability to communicate with family and friends. When that time arrived, he was flown to Scottsdale by air ambulance with his wife, Fran, at his side. Hal and Fran Finney arrived in Scottsdale, Arizona on Tuesday August 26 where Hal was checked into ICU of a hospital near Alcor where the Alcor response team was set-up and waiting.

After the family had a chance to say their goodbyes, Hal’s ventilator was disconnected and he was allowed to breathe naturally, all while medical providers ensured that he had no conscious awareness of the process. Defying doctors’ expectations, he didn’t draw his final breath until 38 hours later, shortly before 9:00 am on Thursday August 28. Immediately after pronouncement of legal death, Alcor’s standby team went into action, restoring circulation, ventilation, administering an array of medications, and initiating external cooling. Cryoprotective perfusion — to eliminate ice formation — has been completed and Hal is now undergoing cool down to -196 degC for long term storage where he be cared for until the day when repair and revival may be possible.

Hal paid for his cryopreservation through a combination of life insurance and bitcoins donated by admirers. His wife, Fran, also has arrangements for cryopreservation. She is glad to have a chance to see him again sometime in the future when they may return in restored and rejuvenated bodies.

I guess that's the ultimate kind of "cold storage". I hope he gets "reanimated" soon, although I have my doubts as to whether this is even possible.

Oh my that comes off as a horrible description of death that causes me to speculate that it may well even be more difficult to bring back someone that died in that kind of way.. versus someone who might be purposefully euthanized in a more quickie kind of fashion in order to attempt to preserve the brain in a less likely damaged - not saying that I understand the supposed scientific procedure either, except for just understanding that death involves a damaging of cells process.. and seems to be also common sense that quickie deaths have way fewer damaged cells.. at least at the time of "official/legal" death.

By the way, as I type this post, isn't supra $40k seeming even like a greater kind of "temporary" ... surely this cannot count as UPpity  (I mean $41,334.... as I type...  pffft.. what is that.. kind of ant-ish, no? not really anything, right?).. we need to be changing the number.. just to make the point that UPpity is not be the actual BTC price direction.  Get a grip guys... this not be up.. just act like you don't see anything when you look at the charts, because whatever you think that you might be seeing currently, doesn't count.  Tongue

I haven't followed the cryonics science lately, but long ago, when they were successful "defrosting" mice in lab with a custom microwave oven, they all died within weeks from being "reanimated" because the immune system was damaged. I'm assuming their memory cells (similar to human T-cells) in the blood, an intrinsic part of the immune system, were damaged as the blood went past the 0C (32F) temp barrier during defrost. Perhaps they have made a lot of progress since then, not sure.

Thinking about who would take the expense of defrosting people in the future, someone who wants your Bitcoin wallet related passwords perhaps? Considering the horrors of being tortured and later disposed, might be better off cremated after all, just a thought. Wink
