FYI: offering 5BTC bounty to add getwork proxy functionality into cgminer

322  Bitcoin / Project Development / [BOUNTY 5BTC] cgminer: add getwork proxy functionality on: July 06, 2013, 03:59:46 PM
Developers, miners and geeks,

I need to have a getwork proxy functionality added to cgminer and am willing to pay 5BTC for its development.

Overview
Last year I had 5 computers distributed all over my flat running cgminer to run different types of mining rig. Since each instance operated its own set of pools and work items, I thought it would be a nice feature to have only one of them operating as proxy, i.e. it on one side connects to pools and handles work items and on the other side allow other cgminer instances to connect and get served.

At that time I asked Con how feasible such a feature would be. His response was that it is doable, but since I was the only one requesting it, maybe not worth the work. With the subsequent feature advances in cgminer, I was able to reduce the number of instances to two and gradually refrained from my idea.

Until recently, when it became hot again: I started operating Asicminer BE blades that are interfaced over Ethernet and use getwork as work API. The best way to operate them is to use a Stratum proxy. While generally doable, I miss lots of cgminer features (most relevant: pool backup / recovery, stability, scalability). With that, I realize that the proxy functionality I had in mind before to cascade multiple cgminer instances would also be useful to support BE blades.

I am familiar with cgminer myself and have already a concept of how it could be realized (similar to hotplug_thread()). If I had 5 days of free time in a row, I'd do it myself - but obviously in today's interesting Bitcoin times I don't have it. Therefore I am offering a 5 BTC bounty to the skilled and motivated developer capable to develop that proxy functionality.

Requirements
From a functional point, the requirements should be clear by the title. I need cgminer to be able to
  • act as a getwork proxy at a configurable port
  • allow getwork based miners to connect (example: other cgminer instances, BE blades)
  • keep track of the getwork clients (identified by username)

Initial testing can be accomplished by connecting multiple cgminer instances to the proxy. If required, I can provide wireshark traces of the communication between blades and Stratum proxy; also I will do qualification testing and performance evaluation with a larger scale BE blades setup myself.

Beside the functional requirements, I am asking for
  • a cgminer compliant open source license to be used
  • the coding style to be kept consistent (wish: Linux kernel coding style)
  • sufficient code quality to get integrated into cgminer upstream

Alternative: stand alone proxy

If it makes development and testing easier for you, you are free to derive a getwork proxy component from existing cgminer. That is, this component would only use the pool and work management from cgminer, but not support mining devices itself (which btw. equals a hotplug-enabled cgminer with no active devices). cgminer's main source file is not modular enough to really support such an approach, just noting it here for completeness.

Process
Before you start hacking into your keyboard, please contact me for further details via email (visible from my forum profile).

Status Update

ASICME.COM added as shipping destination

I have added ASICME.COM as shipping destination, the company that is offering to buy your chips in several auctions.

If you sold some of your orders, you can enter them as shipping destination and finalize your order. With the receipt you should get your escrowed funds released.

Statistics
So far, 107 users registered and ~17k chips has been assigned for shipping. We are not in a hurry (earliest chips expected within the next 2-4 weeks), but if one day the big box arrives at my door and you have not yet entered your shipping address, chips will be delivered to those after you who did (chips will not be left wasted on a shelf).

So please, if you did not yet register, do so soon. Also, if you know someone who might not follow this thread, point him out to the latest updates. If you did not make up your mind yet, you still should temporary select a destination and make up your mind later.

Generally, chips will be shipped only to locked addresses, so until you do not finalize it, you are free to change its destination.

Hey, I am part of batch 1 and I really like this website so far but when I get to Step 2 at the part where I am supposed to sign with my bitcoin address. I believe your checker doesn't check armory signatures. Which are different than bitcoin-qts. I can most definitely send my signed message via pm or email if this will be a problem.

Right, signatures are checked by bitcoind, i.e. if your client is generating signatures in a different format, it won't work. Please check if there is some option in Armory to generate Bitcoin-qt formatted signatures.

If you have a bitcoind running somewhere, you can easily sign the challenge (which is the epoch at request time and therefore unique) with the bitcoind CLI. Otherwise, you could try to generate signatures at brainwallet or create a blockchaininfo Wallet for signing. Note that those online wallets fail signing messages longer than 255 chars, but should work with the short messages we are using.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but I think it is acceptable to assume bitcoind as the reference for signing / verifying; it does not help the case if different clients are using incompatible formats.

The website URL is: https://verify.wpengine.com/

And chip assignments done during 'testing' are still on it Smiley

Thanks for the tl;dr version Wink

And yes, we did not reach the worst-case scenario, so all your data entered during test is still valid.

Update: Website open

Thanks to the testers checking out the website. It looks good so far, nothing exploded over night, so I am opening the site for all now.

If you missed, please check the previous announcement on how to use it.

A friendly reminder: please use the Contact form if you need support related to the site - the forum PM is messy and prevents me from delegating requests for fast processing.

Info: Processing chips distribution to manufacturers
I initially discussed with burnin how to process delivery of chips for users buying boards. We agreed that with each parcel I send, I will include a list of users and the number of their chips included in that shipment.

That should generally suffice for any assembler building boards, if you need more information, please let me know.
327  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [CLOSED] 100 KnC Jupiter 1-500 on: July 03, 2013, 06:10:42 AM
nice one!
can you see my additional jupi in your account?

Nope, still 24 units and the final price paid ($167,880.00). Maybe the do list only what was paid with this order and keep your payment in your original one to not mess up accounting.

The comment field stating that your order #1315 should be added is still there. If a screenshot would make you feel more confident, please contact me vie email.

Update: Preliminary order queue position

The order tracking function at KnC's homepage says

I've got orders in Batches 5,6,8- I'm trying to figure out what's best to use... Individual shipments, right? or is it better to wait for the full order?.. which would delay everything. Just wanting to see what everyone else what selecting.

one question.

I made multiple orders in different batches (for example, I made 3 orders in batch #3, and 2 orders in batch #4). If I select one address for all orders in one batch, will you ship the chips from one batch together?

Added a related note, basically: we do not know when and how batches are shipped. If they deliver exactly as ordered, worst thing that can happen is if you had an order in batch 1 and would need to wait ~2 weeks to ship it together with your order from the last batch. Also, please consider that manufacturers have their own processes, i.e. if your chips arrive there today, it does not mean they are assembled immediately.

I wish I could tell you more, but sadly nobody knows. Since the potential gain of individual shipping is uncertain and the potential loss by waiting to combine orders is limited, I'd suggest to do the latter. But you are of course free to choose.

Another point I got asked several times: some ordered larger quantities in one order and would like to split it into smaller ones to ship to different manufacturers. This is something I missed to consider and now needs to be handled manually. If you want to do so, please send me a request with your order (batch/position/chips) and how you would like to split it. After the update of the database, you should be able to process regularly.

One last note: please use the Contact form for support requests. This forum's PM system functionality is very limited, and as soon as you get over 20 PMs a day, it is almost unusable.

Thanks

Update: Website opened for test-run

Site

https://verify.wpengine.com

Thanks

Zefir let us know when we can all register. As i understood you are in a test-run now.

Just came back from work and need to check how smoothly it worked. If I can fix everything over night, it will be open for everyone tomorrow.
331  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [CLOSED] Avalon ASIC chip distribution on: July 01, 2013, 11:36:22 PM
Update: Website opened for test-run

Folks, we are almost on schedule. The website for collecting the shipping addresses is ready and going to be launched after a first test run.

As outlined in the OP, the order processing is solely based on features we have inherently provided with Bitcoin, namely the blockchain as indisputable log of trades and the address signing mechanism to undeniably claim ownership of payments. You all had enough time to learn how to address sign - if you missed, now is a good time to get used to it.

The design I had in mind was implemented by user maxmint - Kudos to him for the realization of a 'reduce to the max' approach and an overall great result.

Process Steps
Access to the site is provided (as usual) in two steps: you need to register and get associated with the order data first, then perform further tasks after login.

Registering
The first step requires you to identify yourself with the account name you used to order chips. Along with entering basic user information, you need to sign a message with the address you paid from (or select one of them if you used different ones for multiple orders). Once your signature is verified, you can log in with the credentials you provided.

Security note: there is a 2-level security throughout this site: logging in with your credentials gives read-only access, while modifying shipping data always requires address signing. Therefore, getting your password hacked is not critical, while your shipping data is as secure as your private keys are.

Setting shipping addresses
This is the core functionality of the site. You can select the shipping destination of your chips, which can be either your own address, or select from a list of board manufacturers you want your chips be shipped to for assembly (please let me know if you miss some project there). If you have more than one orders, you are given the choice to either ship all of them to a common address, or enter individual ones for each order. Every modification of shipping addresses requires you to sign with the associated Bitcoin address.

Note that so far there is no choice for shipment methods or a selection of parcel services to chose from. In the first stage, I want to focus on collecting the shipping addresses to get some rough figures on the shipping methods needed. If required, I will offer you to select those options at a later time, but most probably I will take what I think works best.

Alongside the address, you can attach some comment to each order if you think there is something I need to know about (like you sold this order to someone else).

You are free to change the shipping addresses as often as you like, which allows you to enter a manufacturer as destination now, and change later when you found a better one. Once you made up your mind, you can finalize shipping addresses by setting the related check-box. This will lock the data and you will not be able to change it any more. Use this as a security feature, or for special applications (like after-sales trades, see below).

Getting a receipt
At any time you can download a text file containing your data on file, that is address signed with 13esx3hBktobmw2CWHKdboqDE8oZbwkbxp. As soon as your address is locked, you can use this confirmation to claim your boards from manufacturers you sent your chips to. Same goes for after-sales trades (see below).

Getting support

The website was designed with simplicity and functionality in mind and was tested thoroughly before launch. If you still face problems or have some suggestions, please use the Contact feature to direct your input to me. I'll try to process your feedback within 48h, but depending on how well everything goes, I can only promise to do it as fast as possible.

Special Case: after-sales trades

For orders re-sold after the sales to new buyers, the original buyer needs to process the following steps:
  • register to the site
  • set shipping address to what was agreed with new buyer
  • add a comment that chips were sold from original to new user (include nick names)
  • lock the shipping address
  • download receipt and provide to new buyer
  • the new buyer can release escrowed funds

Test-run
While basically open for everyone, I like to ask the users who have orders in the first batch to give it a try. If it works flawlessly, I'll announce it as generally usable. If something unpredicted happens, worst case outcome would be that 1st batch users would need to re-enter their information again.

Update: More Sample Chips available

I received the remaining sample chips for all batches and have some more to offer to developers. Since all projects who requested samples already got them (or will have them next week), I am not sure if they are useful at all that shortly before the final chips are shipped in volumes. Those ~50 samples people failed to delegate to some supported projects are now available.

If you still need some of them, please request them (here or via PM). As before, you agree to pay 0.4BTC for S&H. I will distribute them as follows:
  • if you are listed as owner and already received samples from me, you can get up to 6 more
  • if you are not an owner from my group buy, but have an open source project announced on the forums, you can get up to 4 samples
  • if you are working on a private project, you can get up to 4 samples, but will have to pay 0.2BTC per chip

I will leave this offer open till next Wednesday (2013-07-03T18:00Z). After that, sample chips distribution is definitively closed and I will use the remaining ones how I see fit.

Cheers

Update: more Sample Chips received and distributed

Today I received sample chips for the next batches and sent out
  • burnin: 18
  • 4 chips to: flyonwall, jcp, marto74
  • 3 chips to: weaknesswaran, rgzen, julz
  • stripykitteh: 2

Zefir, was there an indication of what batches the two lots of samples were allocated to?  I just ask because I wondered if this will also be an indication as to which batches Avalon will send together.

Thx

If this could serve as some indication, batch 1 should arrive in 3 weeks, batches 2-7 in 4 weeks. Since Avalon initially made a mistake with sending only 30 samples to each buyer (independent of order volume), this might be a false indication.

But second half of July sounds like a good estimate.

only one additional order per user

You have missed one of the basic rules of the group buy here. He also requested you send payments from the same address. By doing it this way you just made more unnecessary work for zefir as he has pointed out before in this thread. Im sure this was an honest mistake/oversight but I wanted to point it out to keep it from happening again here.

Thanks Exoskeleton for pointing it out. I posted the rules for a good reason: every order will have to be claimed individually, i.e. you'll need to address sign to prove ownership. If someone had 10 orders with 10 different sending addresses, that will cost him some effort to handle (as it does for me).

BTW, I PMd you for a feedback on sample chips but did not get response so far. Could you please double check?

Hi,

got an email from KnC that had some info on how to track your # in the queue etc.
my own order was removed from their system, so it seems, did an extra machine get added in your order in exchange, as agreed upon with KnC?

I'd be happy if you could check and give me a quick shout so I can contact KnC just in case.

Sorry if this has been covered.. but are there any sample chips still available?
I have ordered 700 chips - which I'll be getting assembled with burnin, but I've recently become aware of a group here in Sydney with access to PCB manufacturing facilities, pick & place machine etc who are trying to get a project going.

You missed a lot. The relevant links are all posted in the OP's status update section.

To make it short, please read post #855 above and provide me the shipping address for the 2 sample chips that you are entitled for. They will be sent as soon as they get delivered.

Feedback Request: Sample Chips

There were no further updates on the sample chips support recently, and since the delivery of next sample chips is due this week, I need to clarify and prepare shipment.

Based on the latest stats, the distribution key is as follows:
Code:
Owner          |Project          |sample chips|      Sent   | Left

The last column reflects the number of sample chips left to distribute (delegated total - already sent), round up by 2/3. From those folks with sample chips left assigned I need a feedback whether
  • they still want the chips shipped (S&H will be around 0.4 BTC)
  • they want to ship immediately or wait to get more support
  • they can perform their tests with the given number of chips, or better want to delegate them to someone else

Please let me know via PM, and also include your shipping address if you have not done yet.

Thanks
