241  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: [GUIDE] Configure your miner software as a service under daemontools on: August 13, 2016, 07:47:40 PM
I was setting up a new RPi today with the latest Raspbian Jessie Lite. I was thinking about installing ramlog but I noticed posts from people that had problems with using it on Jessie.

So instead I installed this alternative RAM disk log solution:

https://github.com/azlux/log2ram

It's a very simple install and seems to work well.
242  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread Aug 2 to Aug 16. Picks are yet to start. prize =0.00 on: August 12, 2016, 03:04:46 PM
Looks like the difficulty is trending towards 3% with 3.5 days to go.

That would be a reasonable increase. Let's hope it holds here or keeps trending down.
243  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: █▓▒░-< [ZPOOL.CA][BTC Multipool] The miners multipool >-░▒▓█ Paid out 730+ BTC on: August 12, 2016, 12:14:31 AM
I'm interested in trying an S9 on zpool. Searches of this thread and discussions in the S9 thread indicates that there could be problems with S9s on zpool, or with mining alts in general.

Aarons6 suggested using a proxy. Someone else indicated that explicitly setting the difficulty might be needed.

If anyone is reliably mining on zpool with reasonable rejects using an S9, can you tell me what you did to get it to work?

Thanks in advance.

Since the halving these things are not earning very much at all.  I have 2 of them, one of them I got at under 3 BTC with a couple weeks to mine before the halving, and it still looks like it is going to be a long, long time before these ROI and that's without any electricity costs.  I have one underclocked and the other setup to underclock for 6 hours a day and then do stock clock for the other 18 hours.  Based on what others have said about failure rates this looks like a bigger gamble than I had anticipated.

And what really sucks is that it comes on the heels of S7's that still haven't hit ROI with free electricity and decent resale price on two of them.  In about 2 months I should hit an overall break-even on the S7's since I still have an early batch unit mining at an average 5.02 Th/s but if not for the resale prices those things would have been a loss for sure.  Wondering if the S9's might be better sold at this point rather than gamble on them lasting long enough to get my BTC back.

you should check out zpool.. it pays out almost as much as prehalving bitcoin.. its also not effected by bitcoin difficulty..

According to the zpool site it returns 0.0018 per THs. Not clear if that's before or after the 2% fee.

That's a 45% increase over straight BTC mining with a 2% fee and 100% luck.

Are you mining there and really seeing these numbers?

yes, its kind of picky about how you setup your miners tho.. check the zpool thread in the mining altcoin section.

i have 2 s7s, underclocked to 525 @ 3500 ghs (7000 ghs total) and i make around .01 to .012 a day in bitcoin.
keep in mind that value fluctuates on current market price of the coins being mined.. you can check the daily running stats on https://poolpicker.eu/table?algo=sha-256

Thanks for getting back to me. That's very interesting.

But you're not running any S9's against zpool. I seem to remember someone indicating earlier in this thread that S9s did not work well with alts. Not sure if I'm misremembering or not.

And of course since Bitmain hasn't provided the sources to their modified miner, it can't be reviewed.

Anyone out there using S9s successfully with zpool?

If sufficient number of bitcoiners start running graphic cards in support of etc-eth (and they/we probably do this kind of thing already judging by some here), what may stop developers to release a "GPU only"-fork for bitcoin?
This is basically a sword of Damocles that they have over Chinese miner farms and pools.
People will switch their gear from etc-eth to btc if ASICs are ruled out, I think.
It probably would be the best, anyway.

I don't think it is possible to prevent ASICs from ever being used to mine. LTC was suppose to be mined by not ASICs however after a while, companies invested in R&D necessary to manufacture ASICs because there would be enough demand because the value of LTC was high enough.

I think the same would probably happen if the mining algo were to change for Bitcoin.

it would set the asic builders backwards for a long time.

If you added a dag file over 4gb it would force you to have 8gb gpus. That would mean costly development for asic builders.
Better yet if you made it that 2x 8gb cards in crossfire would be the next change after 1x 8gb gpu card was the first change as soon as the the new asic came out switch to the 2 x 8gb  algo  so   the entire time spent building an asic  to mine the 'new' btc would  have been wasted.
I am pretty much ready for an attack against asic building companies.  I have a lot invested in s-9's  but frankly  if they were rendered useless for btc  I switch them over to another 256 coin. I got back a decent amount already from my s-9's

BTC  has a lot of real problems at this time.  I don't like the asic lock on the coin. As I see it harming expansion of BTC.

As interesting and appealing as this sounds, changing Bitcoin's proof of work algorithm seems pretty unlikely. That change is far more contentious than the other contemplated changes, like block size expansion.

If the PoW were to change, ASIC companies and the miners that have invested in them would resist it. There would be two Bitcoins, like Eth/Etc today. The original SHA256 algorithm would be much more secure because they would have way more hash power. That would only change if an overwhelming number of people adopt the new algorithm.

If the new PoW algorithm caught on, then the ASIC manufacturers would move to support it. I don't believe it's possible to create an algorithm that cannot be implemented more efficiently in hardware. If there's enough financial incentive, ASICs designers will find a way.

Basically this would be a replay of SHA256 with the only effect of a reset for a few years. But in the end there would still be two Bitcoin chains, end-user confusion, merchant adoption would be hampered, and there would probably be less investment from VC's because the double chain mess would make Bitcoin investment even more risky. Bitcoin's first mover network effect advantage might even be lost to an alt.

I don't see this happening at all. There's too much at stake for the current Bitcoin movers and shakers to allow this.

Instead there will always be alts, like Eth/Etc, some of which will be profitable enough to draw miners away.

My bitfinex account was reduced in ETC and in ETH
What does it mean?  So far I don't know  but if I ever get into it instead of looking at it I will pull the ETH.

Leave the ETC  and the BFX
This is why I hold everything on a Trezor. I only use exchanges as briefly as possible to buy and sell coin.

can you easily pay from that Trezor thingie? The description is kind of open to interpretation and/or opaque.
I also looked at Ledger Nano S. Anybody uses that one?

Yes, it's easy to pay from a Trezor. Basically you start the payment from their web app, or other supporting wallet software (like electrum), then you confirm it on the device. The Trezor itself does the signing so there's no exposure of your private keys.

One downside to the Trezor screen is small. It's getting a little tough to read as I get older. I've heard that the KeepKey (which is a Trezor clone) has a bigger screen. And Trezor is working on a 2.0 unit. Unclear what that will be.

I rarely send from the Trezor anyway. I use it as a kind of vault. Periodically I'll send spending money to my phone wallet from the Trezor. But I'm pretty much a hodler anyway.

I have no experience with the Ledger. Looks similar to the Trezor though.

I don't have any direct experience because I didn't use Bitfinex. But according to posts on Reddit it sounds like they're giving everyone a haircut in order to avoid bankruptcy.

I think I read that they're taking 36% of all user accounts, even those that were completely unaffected.

It's really quite a mess. Their customers are paying the price for poor security choices, but that's better than forcing them into bankruptcy and waiting 5 years to get even less back.

Thanks for the hard work! It was a fun project.

Bad timing for me because one of my sticks is in first place for the first time Grin

But I guess the site isn't going away immediately so I can revel in my glory until I get knocked out (which will likely be soon; it's not that great a share).

That didn't take long after asking!  Smiley  If I had know all it took was to ask then I would have done so much earlier!

That one would be from a rental.  I don't know the share diff since it was a rental and not my own hardware, but if I did the math correct on the block info (no guarantees on that), it was around 673G.

Now I'm asking for one from my own hardware  Wink

The real question is how do you pronounce your member name?

So Bitmain no longer is selling any more S9 to cap the hashrate ?

Sure doesn't look like the hash rate is capped any more. Maybe they're selling to private farms, or outfitting hashnest.

There's also the likely possibility that Avalon will soon enter the fray. Maybe they're testing.

Originally when Bitmain released the S9 at an insane price and with an effective monopoly I really wanted to see Avalon, BW, or anyone compete with them. But now that I've taken the S9 plunge (b3, which was the sweet spot), part of me selfishly hopes that a competitor doesn't rock the boat.

If a competitor comes on the scene, Bitmain is in a perfect position to annihilate them. If that happens then the ensuing price war will drive down the price of current mining hardware, drive up the difficulty, and kill any chance of ROI in Bitcoin terms of S9 early adopters like me.

The only thing keeping me from panicking in the face of the oncoming difficulty tsunami and selling my S9 right now, where there is zero competition and breathing room before the boom comes down, is my wife reminding me that I'm impossible to live with when I'm not mining Wink

I'm a hobbyist miner I'm not nearly invested as some. So I'm ok with overriding the businessman in me that says that the time to sell my S9 is now.

For those of you that are heavily invested in the S9 at non-discounted prices, my heart goes out to you.

I was hoping for at least a month of 10% downturn, like the last halving. Looks like that isn't happening.

The current upswing is frightening.

I fear for my S9's ROI Shocked

These are still available. Sure they won't make much money. But they're great for teaching about mining. Or for a mining history collection.

With an average of ~4 blocks per day (over the last 180 days), how come folks look for external reasons for 2 block days but call the 6 block days "good luck" and go on about their merry way?

Haha!  Everybody loves the 6 block days but the 2 block days brings out the tin foil hat folks!

*image removed*

well in this domain(cryptoland) its not safe whatsoever to just assume all is ok. Its great to always be on your toes.. It must be nice that you have no concerns but those that question arent necessarily trolls wearing tinfoil hats.  Not intelligent of you to stereotype in this way.  To think for yourself is to question authority.

Looking at organofcorti and the long term stats it seems china is slowing creeping on top.. Looks like that 80% mining share is starting to pay off.. Also with the pools shrinking in size it wouldn't take much hash and cost to pull a with holding attack on the few remaining public pools.> The network hashrate did just drop about 6 % network wide.. maybe that isnt all just block halving and power bills coming. Could be a select few attacking the pools.. slush just lost 6 ph/s and look at their long term stats on pool(lets see if they start hitting some blocks now that its gone.... I think there is more to this.  and is something that shouldnt be so easily thrown into your barrel of tin hat theories.. Most of those are what leads to truth anyway.  I welcome them personally..   All theories and thoughts should be welcome as you never know which one will spark an idea or could lead to breakthru.  As bitcoin becomes more scarce id imagine this will only lead to more attacks.. Could be soon we all have to look at this long term and start going solo.. May be forced to solo nodes mining.

I have no doubt kano will figure this out if there is a problem or not.> This is the risk we must also factor in roi.  The possibilty the pool is attacked.. This really is turning into a every man for themselves scenario. I dont like it one bit.  When money gets involved best judgement is thrown into the wind it seems.  I will just set it and forget it for a while.  I was taking a gamble by renting .. i knew the risk.  Good luck all and may we see greener pastures soon:)

Best Regards
d57heinz

My apologies for the appearance of stereotyping...that was not my intention at all.  I have a lot of respect for all of the miners here on Kano.  Thanks for showing me how my poking fun could have offended folks.

I'm kind of a paranoid guy. Even built a business model around it.

But I was not offended by your post at all. It was funny and all in good fun.

Now where's that next block. Maybe I have to break out the bourbon (no chicken tonight).

Block by Abramov with his 4th for Kano!  Cheesy

It's time Hulk up and turn things green!

Praise Block!

This happened just after I made myself an Old Fashioned with Larceny bourbon.

Forget eating chicken to promote blocks. I'm switching to bourbon offerings Wink

I'm willing to sacrifice my liver for the greater good of the pool!
256  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer S9 : 1 board running hot - worth rearranging? on: July 28, 2016, 02:22:47 AM
I think he should open up his S9 and re-arrange the boards. If the new arrangement results in chain #4 again running hotter, that should definitely prove the defective BMT engineering.

OP, please feel free to re-arrange the boards.

Honestly I think there's not much value in doing this. There's tons of reports of "hot 4th chain" syndrome. My S9 is the same.

It is probably an airflow design failure, but it's also extremely unlikely that Bitmain will take any action, regardless of whether the OP proves the problem or not.

Better to live with it and not void his warranty.

Maybe it would be more effective to start a poll thread where people who have S9s vote about the hot 4th problem. If enough people vote and it's overwhelmingly evident that the 4th chain is in fact problematic, then maybe, just maybe, Bitmain might notice.
257  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Wtb 1 Titan cube on: July 27, 2016, 03:10:02 PM
OP, why did you post 7 WTB threads?

How about you have one thread and close the rest?
258  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: July 26, 2016, 04:04:19 AM
It seems that one of the board in my miner always start getting more HW errors than the rest. Anyone is experiencing that? For example now (chain 1: 18 HW, chain 3:28, chain 4 :220). Usually it runs fine for some time, but after it last board is getting much more errors. I just want to confirm weather I should try to get the board replaced or there is any other thing I could try?

Thank you for any advice

I think the 3rd board always on the S9's are all producing more HW errors than the others. Most likely because of the heat and case design and air flow.
All of mine are like that and all the others I have seen are the same.

Ok thank you. Wasn't sure if my board is not broken.
Thanks for this. I just got my S9 this week, and I'm happy with the hashrate, it's a great machine. Didn't notice that the third board had more HW errors than the others until I read this, but have checked and mine is like that too.

I'm also seeing 10x HW errors on the third board with my B3 S9. Been like that from the beginning.

Looks like it's a very common situation. Assuming that they didn't consistently place crappy boards in the third position, it's likely an airflow/design problem (as others have suggested). Good thing that the other boards compensate for the "bad" position.

But given that we're past batch 9, it's clear that Bitmain isn't interested in using our feedback to improve their design. This problem will never be fixed.

Not that it matters. Seems like their main focus is on controlling supply and managing the difficulty.

For a while now I've wished for competition to break Bitmain's current monopoly. But in retrospect, it's probably a good thing for little miners that a competitor has not emerged. If a real competitor surfaced now, Bitmain would just slaughter them in a price war, and the little guys (me included) would be crushed by the increased difficulty. In this scenario the halving drop off will likely be too short lived to be much help.

I just read on the BM site that Batch 9 is sold out. No S9s 'til the next batch. Interested to see the pricing then...

S7 pricing dropped 17%. This probably doesn't much though.

I'm still tempted to sell my S9 while it can command a high price. You mentioned that option in the S9 thread.

Guaranteed ROI that way. Probably the right thing to do from a business perspective.

But as my wife pointed out, if I sell my only miner (the sticks don't really count; sorry sidehack) I'd spend all of my waking hours looking for a replacement. I might as well give into my addiction, hold what I've got, and hope that it doesn't hurt too bad this time...
