741  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: someone, please help! on: July 28, 2022, 07:53:41 PM
Sweeping is nothing else as transferring 100% of balance into address belonging to target wallet. It means that you do not need any special tool which would allow you to “sweep” paper wallet. Instead of that, just note down the address you want to use as a recipient, create a new wallet base on paper wallet data and then transfer the whole content of the paper wallet account into your prepared wallet. Advantage of sweeping function is that you execute it from your destination wallet, so you do not need to create a one temporary wallet for importing paper wallet.
Why do you ask about program for a mobile? Are you forced to use qrcode as a source of private key instead pf text?
742  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: My own Bitcoin WIF Missing Characters Help on: July 27, 2022, 04:32:26 AM
he always also needed the public key of the private key for fast success and somehow it's also restricted to P2PKH legacy addresses
This is contradictory which raises suspicions. If you have the public key then you don't need the address regardless of its type, since any address type can be derived from the public key.

Or lack of knowledge how to verify if given public key creates desired 3… address etc.

On the other hand I do not think there are many people who created privkey backup for a single address other than legacy, as they are usually created already in “seed era”.
743  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: My own Bitcoin WIF Missing Characters Help on: July 27, 2022, 03:05:18 AM
In a German coin forum a user has proven to be able to recover up to 20 missing characters from the end of a compressed WIF key in a rather short amount of time, but he always also needed the public key of the private key
(…)

He just used one of BSGS or Kangaroo programs. By default they work on specified range of private keys, which is easy to find having lost end of WIF. As I wrote in my post there is Kangaroo version modified by me which allows search in more complicated cases, when missing characters are in the middle or in the beginning.
The fact if key is compressed or not, does not matter.

We have talked this many times and that is because we have a user base here of near 50 million users,so the majority of the users have low number of tickets so that is why we have seen so much commonly such happenings and I am not surprised anymore.I never spend a single satoshi anymore for a lottery ticket except the ones I keep winning (which I don't want) from the WoF spins that I have as a premium member.

You are right, I did not think about it that way - that so many (maybe even majority) of users has so little lottery tickets.
On the other hand I assume that many users (but that's the fact Team must confirm) are registered for daily newsletter, so they receive at least one free WOF, which would statistically give 100-150 lottery tickets weekly (assuming 1/3 of 7 spins gives basic win, nowadays it is 50 tickets). It would mean that that user the most probably did not execute his rolls.
745  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Exploring alternative implementations - Gocoin on: July 26, 2022, 02:50:36 PM
Thanks for the experiment and the great writeup. I've been toying with the idea of spinning up another node with an alternative implementation a while ago.

The sync process took about 6.8 hours. As expected, HDD is the only bottleneck on sync process where my Bitcoin Core report sent speed 11-18MB/s speed. Gocoin RAM usage after IBD is 23.1GB, although it's reduced to 19GB after i close and open Gocoin again. Directory size of Gocoin is about 354GB, while Bitcoin Core is about 493GB (txindex, blockfilterindex, coinstatsindex enabled). I have to say Gocoin web UI is rather nice.
This is the only thing worrying me a bit: 19GB of memory usage is a lot. Not that RAM is expensive, but some nodes simply don't have that much built-in.
Do you know whether Gocoin bases its RAM usage on how much total RAM is available or would it be creating a 3+GB pagefile on a 16GB machine?

Exactly my question. I assume it uses what is available, as project has already several years I am not sure if having more than 16GB was so obvious years ago. I really wonder how it would behave on machine with 8GB total (which means it would have around 6GB free, to use).
Would it be possible for you to launch it with limited memory settings? (maybe using cgroups?)

747  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 8220 Gang uses botnet of around 30000 hosts to mine crypto on: July 26, 2022, 10:48:35 AM
Is it possible to know whether or not your computer was infected? Also, what damage can be done to botnet participants by 8220 Gang, apart from using their CPU power? I mean, if it's just a small percentage, can someone be exploited for years, without knowing about it? Also, have I understood it correctly that only Linux platforms are affected?

I suppose it should be visible on the list of processes running.
I did not investigate that kind of attack, but I will - maybe there are some information how to detect potentially suspicious behavior. For example - do they use 100% of the machine or maybe just 1 core, to stay quiet (many systems notify admin when load is high for a long period of time).

I think good configuration of firewall would be the first and basic step to avoid problems.
748  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / 8220 Gang uses botnet of around 30000 hosts to mine crypto on: July 26, 2022, 10:05:21 AM
8220 Mining Group, was first publicly reported in 2018. The name 8220 Gang comes from the group’s original use of port 8220 for C2 network communications.
Over the last month a crimeware has expanded their botnet to roughly 30,000 hosts globally through the use of Linux and common cloud application vulnerabilities and poorly secured configurations. In a recent campaign, the group was observed making use of a new version of the IRC botnet, PwnRig cryptocurrency miner (a custom version of the open source XMRig miner), and its generic infection script.

These are the TEN LUCKY WINNERS from last week (Round 373) that took home the prizes.

LOL, someone had an incredible luck! To be in the top 10 having 37 tickets Grin
I am not surprised to see here people having 5mln ticket, but even having 1k less you may win (we have 3 people with 5k tickets).
But guy with 37 tickets... wow, he apparently just used 16 times free rolls...

Myślę że nie rozumiem co ma do tego blockchain. Co to znaczy promować ekologiczne produkty używając blockchain? Co to jest blockchain?

Good explanation, thank you TheQuin. I completely forgot I read that some time ago.

BTC goes down, if the trend last longer, we will be balancing on 20k again. Which makes BTC month price even more unpredictable - and maybe when I was telling that my bets for 17.5-20 are lost I was wrong.
752  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: My own Bitcoin WIF Missing Characters Help on: July 26, 2022, 06:18:19 AM
hello there
i have my own bitcoin address and public key and a WIF recognized as invalid

this txt file was old and recovered from my old HDD

i assume that the wif has more than 19 missing characters at known positions

is there is any chances that i can recover it ??

any guiding help will be appreciated Smiley

First at all: 19 is a lot.
How did it happen? What do you have? Text file? How are you sure the rest of characters are correctly recovered? Do you miss beginning or end?
If there would be less characters, but maybe randomly distributed, I would say my WifSolver could help: https://github.com/PawelGorny/WifSolver
Because you have many characters missing, if you lost the beginning you may use much faster version, build for GPU: https://github.com/PawelGorny/WifSolverCuda
That program would not work if you have your characters missing at the end. Then you should try to convert problem into simple brute-force tool like BitCrack.
There is also 4th option. If you know public key (address has outgoing transaction) we may use Kangaroo, normal or modified for solving WIFs (https://github.com/PawelGorny/Kangaroo)
Let me know if you need hep with any of tools, we will try to find the best approach. But honestly speaking, as you sad you are sure 19 characters are missing, the only chance to restore it in reasonable time is to have public key and attack with Kangaroo.

True. But chances to get 00000 are not the same as the other numbers. You have half-chances to get it compared to a common number. Because decimal values are "rounded off to the nearest whole number" while you can't get negative values (ie from -0.5 to 0.0) before rounding. It's the same for 10 000 as you can't get decimal values above 10 000.0 before rounding.

How do you know what is the granularity? How do you know what is used as a "round" function (maybe it is ceil, maybe floor)?
We do not know the real source code behind, so we may only speculate how it is done.

It isn't a problem. The results range from 0 to 10000 inclusive. The base result range shown on the table is 0 - 9885.

Does it mean we may hit not 10000 values but 10001?

@slaman29 how can you get 00000 that’s an error right?
No it's not an error I got it one time.
(...) But nothing happened, there had been no special message and I won the same prize as if I hit 9885.

Are you sure it was indeed 00000? May you verify it in the history of rolls (on MULTIPLY BTC page)?
I suppose (especially that you received a base win) that it was just a problem with browser or javascript.

Also Bitcoin price is staying in the ranges 20-22.5K and 22.5-25K,it can go also somewhat lower than 20 but the most common ranges are these two ones, most probably we all will make money because the majority of us has already bet on such ranges.

There were the only reasonable bets. 20-22.5 were the most popular (odds 2.91), then 22-25 (3.58). Very very good odds, no? Even betting on both of these ranges you win.
Pessimists (17.5-20) have odds not so much bigger - 4.43. Optimists (25-27.5) have 8.78, that's already a lot.
We wait, but anyway we will see a good profit this month.

Verstappen won in France, odds were finally 2.47, which give quite good gain again. Hungary and Belgium are next.
758  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: payment address is not valid mycelium to electrum wallet on: July 25, 2022, 07:25:30 AM
I believe this is because of your iPhone IOS version because the apple AppStore won't allow you to download the latest version of the Mycelium since your ios version is not compatible with their latest one. It only allows you to install the last Compatible version with your current IOS version.
My suspicion as well. But because of rumors that Apple cripples old-generation phones in new IOS versions, I would abstain from updating 3 major versions up form 12 to 15, but simply buy a new phone instead (or just use an Android phone, which doesn't have any of this BS).

Partially you are right. The problem with development for android phones is huge fragmentation, there are dozens of OS versions used by people all around the world and at some point developer must decide for which versions he wants to target his soft - as a consequence some group of phones with older OS will not have access to the program.

I guess something similar we have now. OS 12 is already quite old and developer decided to target only phones with newer OS. Nothing to blame Apple for. And in fact I would not blame Mycelium too much too, as I know how annoying/difficult/time consuming could be maintaining old versions "just to have them". Adding critical features only in the new versions? so-so.
On the other hand - the latest iOS 15 is used on more than 70% of phones, the latest android on 25%.

If phone allows - update it, it could be only better.

Shiftcrypto today released a warning that hosted service ActiveCampaign they used for sending newsletters have been compromised.

Again... leak because of newsletter. I understand it could be fancy to outsource everything what is not the core business, but at the end it causes only the problems. It is much better to invest minimum effort and be able to say that any aspect of business (especially when you are into crypto-sector) is self-controlled. How I may trust you and give you my money if you cannot keep my email safe?
760  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Python BTC Local Webserver on: July 23, 2022, 04:31:33 PM
Vanity WIFs ;-)
I know some people may use my WifSolverCuda as a "cracker" for their manually generated WIFs. You may for example remember that you wanted to have "5JVeryConfusedxxxxxxxxPersonWithDementiaAndBackPain" and all you need is to find 8 unknown characters which would produce the correct WIF.
That's a terrible idea. If the private key isn't random, it can be brute-forced much easier.

It goes off-topic but when I think about it, I think it is not worst than brain wallet. At the end, what we receive from brain wallet is not "random" too. And knowing part of brainwallet we may try to brute-force the rest. At the end in one case we talk about sha256 and in other case as a base58 decoding.
The idea behind Vanity WIF (do not blame me, I have never did that personally, I was just contacted by some people who use my program to generate that WIFs) is to be able to remember WIF partially, knowing that it is technically possible to restore the missing part. That way we may have known "human readable" part (date, sentence, etc). and have part which is calculated by program, looking for a correct (importable) WIf. Of course one may decide to do extra steps, like prepare WIF in uncompressed form, extract private key and then use it in compressed form - but it is an extra complication, which could cause other problems ("I forgot how I did that 5 years ago").

As a Post Scriptum I may add that we all are humans, years of evolution caused we have ability to find patterns. We may say one text "is random" while other is not. We may say that WIF cannot contain the same characters repeated 10 times, because we feel it is unnatural. But the chance for that is exactly like the chance for any other combination. Additionally, let's do not forget about different languages. English words has no meaning in Dutch or Spanish and vice versa. Random letters would mean nothing for me, but they could be a "Hello World" in Chinese.
Like they say, if you take many monkeys and they will press random typewriter keys for a long enough, one of them will finally write the whole "Hamlet".
