141  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Auroracoin - A new chapter in the history of Iceland! on: May 05, 2015, 09:12:17 AM
I expect that as the price goes up as in any coin, the coin spreads as some selloff occurs which spreads the coin between holders.  Hopefully Iceland will be able to regain the use of the coin.  I am concerned what happens when it begins to go back to Iceland, can Iceland users sell the coin on exchanges out of Iceland?  Because if they sell for btc , wouldn't the government consider that a currency to confiscate?  I dont know how that works, but if they confiscate anything other than isk, wouldn't they just confiscate anything that is used as a currency?

--o

The government doesn't really care if you have BTC or AUR. If on the other hand people would start to buy AUR with the intent to convert it to some foreign fiat they might care. For them to care though it would need to be substantial amounts in consideration. For that to be the reality Auroracoin would have to have very high value and usage in Iceland and abroad. If it would be that valuable and that much used they would have a hard time to stop it. Going for the Icelandic exchanges is the most likely scenario.

Actually they don't consider Auroracoin a currency. For them to consider something as a legal currency it would need to have a centralised issuer and since Auroracoin doesn't it is categorised as a digital asset and is taxed like any other asset you have with fluctuating value. I don't think they can confiscate it unless they would pass a special law for it which I think is extremely unlikely unless the majority of congress would be convinced that Auroracoin is a serious threat to financial stability.

All these speculations is one of the most exciting things about Auroracoin. A situation where a cryptocurrency has gotten so widespread that a government is forced to either accept that it is being used and accept it's existence and even define it as a legal currency (not saying that they would replace it for fiat) or they would use all the dirty tricks on the book to try and fight it off. Either situation is beneficial for crypto as it would give an example to follow or what to avoid.

"My name is Pétur Árnason and I'm one of the founders of the Auroracoin foundation and am a part of the new dev team.

I want to state this now so we are all clear on this.

We are not trying to hype the coin nor get any of you here to buy the coin. We are taking over this project because we believe in it's potential here in Iceland and we will be working towards that goal not to get a few traders on BCT to buy a few coins. So I think I can't make it more plan than this. Do not buy the coin if you are not from Iceland. If you are however and you have your doubt's then you can send me a PM here or at auroraspjall.is and I would be more than willing to meet you face to face to discuss what we are doing here and why.

If you are however interested in this project and it's potential, then feel free to join us in this experiment and help us get this coin adopted by the Icelandic public. We are a determined group that fully understand that this project will take some years of dedication before it can be called a success and all of us are ready to take on that work.

If you are asking why then it's because of Auroracoins huge distribution in Iceland. I think most here don't realise what that means. This coin has more chance of getting public adoption in the next years than any coin around, including Bitcoin. That is for two reasons and for those who are interested, I'll explain.

First is Iceland.
Iceland has all the perfect conditions to adopt a cryptocurrency.
We had a crash here in 2008 that is the result of the flawed monetary system we have today and people here are unhappy with this system and are still angry at the system.
People here know that the króna is a zombie currency that has been inflated many times beyond it's capacity and they know it will fail again.
Iceland has capital control in place which greatly limits the foreign currency that the public can get.
We have a very high rate of technology adoption in Iceland and one of the highest Internet usage per capita in the world.

The second being the success of the first airdrop stage.
There were claims for over 10% of the nation and there are still over 20.000 of these that are still holding their original claims. No matter how you put it the exposure Auroracoin got in Iceland at that time is unparallelled anywhere in the world. In no other country in the world does as high percentage of the public been exposed to a cryptocurrency and nowhere else do more people own a cryptocurrency. The amount of claims does not even come close to showing the the amount of exposure the coin got here at this time. This is what makes Auroracoin special and is far more valuable than any market cap can tell you.

What this all means is that Iceland is the perfect environment to get people to adopt a cryptocurrency. If we succeed in that all of the crypto community will benefit from it as Auroracoin would hit all the possible obstacles on the way, be it social, legal or technical. It would demonstrate all the benefits and disadvantage of cryptocurrency adoption which other coins can learn from. Auroracoins adoption in Iceland would be a small scale simulation of how adoption would likely play out in larger economy's and it would benefit our crypto community as a whole.

This is why we dedicate ourselves to this project. Our goal is general adoption of cryptocurrencies in general, not just Auroracoins.

So just to be clear on this. If you are not from Iceland, do not buy the coin. There is a plethora of other coins out there much better for general trading."

I love this.

May I challenge you on this sir

1. The foundation is 75% non icelandic
2. Foreign investors only create more incentive for Icelanders to usE it, not dump it
3. You have no proof that most of the coin is distributed to foreigners
4. Most of The coin is most likely distributed to Icelanders.
5. If you won't hype the coin then I will: aurora is the god of dawn and " opens the gates" for Apollo. Auroracoin will open the gates to a new dawn for the world!

1. The foundation is 100% Icelandic. Are you confusing the foundation with the dev team?

2. Is this related to the statement that you should not buy the coin if you are not Icelandic?
If so then no offence meant. I just waned to make it clear that we are not here to try to hype the coin for a quick gain for ourselves like some are claiming. If you want to invest in the coin go for it, it will most definitely help strengthen the coin but just be clear on the fact that nobody here is trying to trick you into investing in the coin nor promising you any profits.

3. I have never stated anywhere that most of the coin is distributed to foreigners. Actually I believe the opposite, though some foreigners might hold some large bags. If Auroracoin gets good adoption in Iceland and the price gets right, those coins will find their way back to Iceland one way or another and so what if those bagholders made some profits on it. Good for them. That doesn't mean that the Icelanders who will buy these coins from them are loosing something.

4. Like I just stated above.

5. I'm not sure how to respond to this but I'll try. Promoting something and hyping it is not the same thing. Promoting something is raising awareness on a particular thing but hyping is to get people over excited for something. So like I said, we will not be hyping the coin as that involves getting people so excited that they take a decision without clear thinking or full disclosure of facts behind the decision they are making but we will promote it to the public of Iceland. Both benefits and disadvantages will be made clear for people so they can take an educated decision to use it or not.

Does that answer your questions?
If not or you have any others then just shoot away and I'll do my best to answer.
143  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Auroracoin - A new chapter in the history of Iceland! on: May 04, 2015, 10:38:02 AM
I still think a country coin will be one of the big landmarks in the history of cryptocurrency adoption. Time will tell which one will be first...
I think there are two contenders for the title of "first successful national cryptocurrency". One is AUR and the other one is Guldencoin.
Guldencoin is in the much difficult position because the country financial system is based on the EURO backed by the EU behemot. Iceland recently quit the european integration. That means independence!
Also the size of the country matters.
Finland has a national aidrop cryptocurrency running. But i didn't follow FIMK too much.
My believe is that if a national cryptocurrency with wide adoption will emerge, it will be from a northern country.

I agree on the 2 contenders mate, unfortunately for the UK there is a lot of other coins where the developers are UK based so a need for a country coin wasn't going to be easy. Part of the reason why britcoin failed, if guldencoin was AUR the price of AUR would be over 100k now with what guldencoin has achieved and it doesn't have the whole "scammy" start to it. rocanonz is correct that aur will be much easier to achieve acceptance and might be the countrycoin that makes the first jump into top 10 coins. That being said when AUR works I think Guldencoin will take off like a rocket and might cater for the whole of Europe and not just Netherlands.

If AUR would have any positive affect on Guldencoin or any other serious coin for that matter, we would be on the right track. We are not here to compete with other coins but to strengthen the foundation of all cryptocurrencies. If the Icelandic public would decide to take Guldencoin over AUR at some time, it would be a great moment as it would mean that people have gotten involved and have made their own choice. Not been forced to accept something they don't want by a central entity.

I am quite shocked to see only 206 FB followers(mostly foreigners) for a coin that got distributed to 40 000 people. I am starting think this really was a scam. Sad

Corrcection.

I just want to post this here because there are people here claiming otherwise.

Auroracoin did get a lot of publicity in Iceland. To proof my case I just want to post a few links that I managed to gather and post here in less than 20 minutes so you can be certain this only gives you a glimpse of the exposure that Auroracoin got here in Iceland.

I remember holding 1 aur as part of my coin plan back in 2013.  So price has dropped, some people bought it all up and now are rebooting it?  That is noble cause and good luck to you, but you cannot just say hey we are relaunching, we are new, look at us when in your OP you have original github, original wallets, that haven't been touched since April 2014.  I remember there was a countdown timer to new stuff?  I have a little over 600 aur now, nothing close to the 2 million held by three addresses but still wondering where is this going to end up?

Yes there was a time but sometimes life gets the best of you. Smiley

There were some changes on the way and we decided that the new code base would need more testing before we would publish it. We rather take more time to make sure that the code is solid than to publish it with a possible bug. Our estimate is that the code should be properly tested and the new wallets compiled by the later part this week. I'm sure most people here would rather have a stable wallet than getting it a few days earlier.

Oh and thanks for the code update, yes would prefer stable, maybe update OP to reflect this.  I would like to hold aur not in an exchange for obvious reasons...

Absolutely correct on both OP and exchanges. Smiley
Will get the OP updated.

What code changes are being released? Something new and innovative or just copy and paste ?

Nothing new and innovative. Auroracoin's current code base is old and outdated and that is creating various problems. We plan to have more improvements to the coin but those changes will take 2-3 months to implement and test. So what we are doing now is updating to a new litecoin code base with improved difficulty retargeting as the current one is not stable and is having stalls because of multipools. Soon after we launch the new code base we will publish a roadmap where we will disclose where we are heading with the core development and our estimated timeline.

What you can expect from our core development is stability. Auroracoin is not about innovative technology but about the people of Iceland adopting the coin. So our resources are better spent on focusing on that rather than new features. Everything we see that can make the coin more stable and secure will be something that we would want to implement and who knows what will be required when a lot of people start to use the coin.

Can you explain why the foundation holds 1 million aur?  For instance if this was a brand new coin, we are talking a 15% premine (since 5.4million or burned) for dev/foundation work, almost everyone on bct would call this out pretty violently.  Coming from FLT I recognize the need to have proper funding, but at current price that is $8.6 million isk.  Not sure if that's a lot in Icelandic terms.

That was Baldur's decision and nobody here had really anything to say about it. According to his original airdrop blueprint there was always supposed to be a portion left for the foundation or dev group but if I remember correctly that was supposed to be around 1/3 of what it turned out to be. I think he increased the amount as he was hoping that the development would pick up at the time but the price had gotten quite low at the time. This was when he reset the airdrop for the second phase.

So the million is there and there is not much to do about it now so we are working on a clear plan on how the foundation will use and secure the funds. For the moment I can not give you guys the details of how it will be used as it's not for me to disclose at this time but I can tell that the majority of it will be used for promotion and education in Iceland and for infrastructure development. The fund will not be touched until these plans have been laid out in detail and all factors of transparency are in place.

sorry I wasnt folowing auroracoin very much, just wanted to ask, why original dev gave up on it

Hey mate, most people believe the actual developer was not from Iceland but someone that came up with a good idea for the country because it was the hardest hit in the 2008 crisis. So the dev had his limitations of what he could do for the coin. Now a new team has taken over and potentially someone within this team is the real developer, but now there is no pressure on them to succeed.
The good part is that 3 people who control 1 million AUR in a foundation (part of the premine) are from Iceland and most likely the first real Icelandic people involved.

Actually he was always clear on this from the beginning. His plan was always just to start the coin and let the community take over. He never hid the fact that he would withdraw from the project, at least as Baldur. Even though he stopped communicating some months after the initial lunch he still followed through on everything that he promised. He reset the airdrop for phase 2 and 3 like he said though he changed the arrangement which he also made clear he might do in the airdrop bluprint and he burned the remainder of the airdrop after the airdrop was finished. I like many others do not agree with all the decisions that he made but they were his to make and as far as I know he didn't lie to anyone. So whatever people might think of the guy he never promised anything that he didn't deliver.

The reason Auroracoin lost it's momentum in the beginning is the fact that it was extremely overinflated by unrealistic expectations and naturally crashed when everyone realised it was so. So most people who wanted to get involved in the beginning disappeared as they wrote the coin off as a failure. The uncertainty increased more when Baldur stopped communicating and the people who were still involved didn't get the support and traction needed to continue.

There has always been a core of people who have been determined to take this all the way (me included). The reason we didn't until now is that we have always known that while the airdrop was still open there would always be too much doubt and we would not be able to introduce this project to the people of Iceland until that uncertainty was eliminated. So what we have been doing is working behind the scene towards other infrastructure solutions.

Regarding Baldur not being Icelandic. I never communicated with him myself but I personally know a few people who did and they did that in Icelandic. So either Baldur was Icelandic or one of that group at least was. Another fact is that you can't get access to Íslykill (Icelanic social ID authentication service) unless you are Icelandic.

154  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][AUR] Auroracoin - a cryptocurrency for Iceland on: April 18, 2015, 05:27:40 PM
Another national project like AUR is SPA (Spaincoin) they just destroyed the premine coins that not has been claimed, i think has been a  good move because otherwise the people that receive those coins will dumped in the open market anyway, puting more downward presure on the market, someone claim that the vast majority of coins are held for foreing people, is very dobius, even if that was true, i dont see the problem, the people who claim coins always has a choice if sell or keep it, if the majority of icelandic people just dumped for profit (free money from heaven) they already has a benefit from it, the people who buy this coin and still have faith in this proyect islandic or not has the same right because this ownership came from his pockets, nobody gives it for free. So from my point of view the premine coins must be burned if Balduro already has resign to continue on board i don´t see why the comunity can´t do this and move along Wink

I do have one concern is that AUR is trading on hope that Icelanders would rather use this coin over bitcoin. The marketcap is quite high considering there is coins with half the marketcap and have android wallets and a lot of other features AUR don't have. I hold AUR so I want it to do well but there is a lot of catching up to do compared to other coins on the development front. I just hope the Icelandic people feel a sense of emotional attachment to this coin over bitcoin as that is the only advantage it actually has.

Actually you will see a lot of improvements on Auroracoin in the following weeks, including new wallets.

You forget the fact that Icelandic people can't buy Bitcoin that easily, while Auroracoin is widely distributed here. So very few Bitcons are and will be within peoples reach here for the next years.
155  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][AUR] Auroracoin - a cryptocurrency for Iceland on: April 14, 2015, 05:00:27 PM
You cannot destroy the premine!!!!!

This is something that cannot happen. You cannot under any circumstances change the promised supply to investors which is 21 million coins. Balduro will change his mind on the premine so give him a chance. He created this coin and no one has the right to fork it and destroy the premine, it's his coin now leave it as is and let him do his work.

We all want Baldur to finish his job. The original blueprint talked about destroying the remaining premine. Some have suggested distributing the remaining premine to all who claimed, or only those who claimed in the first airdrop 31.8 AUR.

The thing is Baldur finished the airdrop on time. He rerouted auroracoin.org to auroraspjall.is after the airdrop, but we are all waiting to see what he does with the premine.

All uncertainty about the coin will be lifted when Baldur acts on the premine. If he does nothing the new dev team will do it for him, by blocking the premine addresses with a hard fork. If the new dev team does not block the premine addresses we might be waiting forever to see if Baldur acts on the premine or not. I think the timer on auroracoin.is is when new wallets will be ready for a hard fork.

Do the hardfork without destroying the premine. It will add value to the coin and more Icelanders can take the airdrop with remaining premine. He has been very honest until now so give him time.

Do a community poll here on these forums but make it so only junior members and above can vote. Community say is very important, the new devs can't just do what they want.

Nobody can claim the coins now. He has ended the airdrop closed the claim site. So now the coins are just sitting there and creating uncertainty for everyone. I really do hope he will finish to burn the coins or have some kind of end to what he started and I still believe that he will come through as he has followed through what he said he would do until now. But we can not leave over 5million coins in someones hand without any certainty what will happen to it. Baldur have had some weeks now to work on this and he will have more than 2 weeks still to end his work as promised, what more does he need?

You don't need a poll to see what the community want and certainly devs can not just do whatever they want. The community decides if it wants to use the code the devs make or not. If it will come to that we need to block the premine addresses with code (which I truly hope not) the community always has the last word by accepting that code or not.

A new team, A new coin for Iceland. IcelandicNotes will be launched in June.

After leaning from the early mistakes made by AUR distribution we want to start with a clean slate for Iceland.

Transparency:
Every team member will be contactable by phone, email etc Trust and Transparency is very important in Iceland.
Company address will be given and people from the public will be more then welcome to come visit.

Fair Distribution:
No Premine but coin generation will be done in new innovative ways, the focus will be on developing the currency for Iceland and making it usable on launch.

Team
The core team will only consist of citizens from Iceland and will outsource any needed skills we can't do in house.

Development
More to be announced closer to launch.

I will announce our new forums when we go live. It's time to give Iceland the coin it deserves.

Ok, lets start with transparency. You are who?

Eggert has a point the biggest holders are foreigners for a coin that is meant for a specific country. The premine is the only hope it stays this way, this is not a easy situation because destroying the coins will make the value go up which is what everyone wants so we can get more bitcoins but from another stand point it's unfair for the Icelanders to be controlled by foreigners who will have the most say with their coin.

Icelanders got ~5,5 million AUR in the airdrop, 53% of the 10,5 million. How can it be that foreigners hold most of the coin?

Because a lot of Icelanders gave their airdrop AUR to relatives who sold them to foreigners. They largely rejected establishing AUR in iceland and just viewed the airdrop as a BTC or fiat present from foreigners.

I don't think the majority is in the hands of foreigners (let alone the rest of the premine, I'm not sure if balduro is an icelander or not).

I have talked to some Icelandic people here that verified that he is Icelandic as they had all their communication with him in Icelandic.

Thanks ltex

Eggert raised the concern that he can't trust the coin and that he wants a list of Icelanders who hold Auroracoin.

Baldur was supposed to be the guy to answer questions for people like eggert and once he left I decided to fill the vacuum.

Eggert if you spend some short time analysing the rich list you will see how transparent and trustworthy  this coin is.

1. The richest aur address is reserved for the foundation with one million air.
2. The next 15 addresses are the premined airdrop coins that have not been claimed.
3. The next 40 addresses are miners that mine Auroracoin.
4. From there there are about 200 people with more than 100 dollars worth of Auroracoin, these people have invested money above and beyond possibly claiming from the airdrop.
5. From there you have about 30 000 Icelanders holding between 100 and 1000 Auroracoin.

There is very little room for any scammers here, what needs to be done to win your trust eggert?

5. From there you have about 30 000 Icelanders holding between 100 and 1000 Auroracoin.
I can tell you right now this is a big lie, there is just over 300 000 people in my country and I would know many more people that have claimed these coins. This is 10% of my country. This is a big scam... good luck getting people to join your pyramid scheme!

I will only promote bitcoin with my people.

Well Eggert I live in Iceland too. I have no doubt about the original claims being true. There was a lot of media coverage of Auroracoin when it started. Why is it remote to have 30.000 claims when you even have 5.000 people liking the facebook page, most of whom are Icelandic people. I'm one of the persons working on the coin now and I'm involved with the foundation. You want transparency, I'll even meet you face to face to discuss this and answer all your questions the best I can if you want.

I've been in communication with some of the guys behind Auroracoin lately, and i'm pretty excited to jump in and help as well as i can with pushing further this great idea. Aurora has been one of my first ''love-affair'' in cryptos, and i'm more then happy to assist this great new birth.

I would handle with caution until premine is actually destroyed, but i can't resist, i keep buying at every price level.

Keep going guys !

Icelanders will only look at bitcoin  because it is stable and has more support. AUR would be too risky for most of us, if you know Icelanders we don't like risk after 2008 and financial trust is big problem for most people here.

Everyone should look for himself!
And AUR is in my books for sure Wink
One more thing. Bitcon stable, seriously?)

Yeah I was about to make the same comment about bitcoin and I have to emphasize. Seriously!?

Actually I respect your opinion on this but I completely disagree. Bitcoin might gain the overhand eventually some years later (or not) but Auroracoin is the best option around to get peoples attention and to ignite their curiosity for cryptocurrencies. It is widely distributed in Iceland whereas Bitcoin is not.

Which do you think is more likely scenario for someone who has not touched crypto before, to try to use Auroracoin which they might have gotten from the airdrop and can be easily obtained (or sold) in the soon to come exchange or that that person would go out of their way to try to obtain Bitcoin which is in very short supply in Iceland and people are very restricted to buy it because of the currency controls?
