581  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is It Safe To Transfer Wallets Through The Internet? on: December 20, 2014, 07:42:16 PM
Hi.
Stupidly, I left my BTC wallet (it's on a thumbdrive) at home. I was wondering if it was safe for someone to e-mail it to me? The wallet has a MultiBit password but i'm not entirely sure it would secure it enough. Is there a way I can completely secure it if I were to pass it through e-mail or should i just be patient and wait a week until i'm home? I currently use a temporary wallet with nothing in it - but its still a wallet.
Thanks

I won't send it directly with emails. If you need your bitcoin urgently I would suggest you to ask someone to further encrypt the file (using 7zip, winrar, or whatever software you trust) before sending it, and ofc don't include that encryption password in the email.

Okay, thank you

583  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Raspberry Pi Bitcoin Mining on: September 06, 2014, 08:10:57 PM
Would the Raspberry Pi be powerful enough to pool mine anything at all, it doesnt have to be profitable (it's my experiment)?
Hello Fishbones. I experimented with some BTC GPU mining at the end of last year. Now, desktop GPUs are real powerhouses compared to Pi yet to see something appear on the pool balance I had to mine about an hundred hours, it was in the order of ... I think 5 nBTC at the end.

I suggest trying some altcoin. MYR and DGB use the same algos and they're still on a very reasonable difficulty. Granted, you still don't get a profit but at least you don't go crazy on decimals (especially for DGB)... and who knows what the future might hold for them.

Hi,
This was the answer I was looking for. I didn't mean to use a Pi as a controller but to actually use it to mine alone. I know it wouldn't be profitable at all but I would be interested in the results.

I will try some alt coins also.

Thanks everybody for the replies.
584  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Raspberry Pi Bitcoin Mining on: September 06, 2014, 11:34:18 AM
Hi!
I have been wondering for a while now, is it possible to mine with a pi? Of course it would be extremely slow but I think it would be quite interesting to see how it does. I can't find anywhere that someone has tried this, I've only seen people running ASICs with Pi.

Would the Raspberry Pi be powerful enough to pool mine anything at all, it doesnt have to be profitable (it's my experiment)?

The reason I ask is I am trying to get myself a few pennies of BTC to mess around with, It doesn't have to be profitable to my wallet, just my intelligence.

Thanks.

Hi,
I've been into bitcoin a while now, I sold off 1 CEX.IO GH for $5 in BTC to get myself started. I sold the GH a while back now and I have been working on my BTC balance for a long time. I am determined to get all of my BTC (other than the $5 worth) for free. I now hold 0.0254658 BTC.

My question, is although I hold little BTC (Personally I am proud of this  Smiley), how can i be sure it is safe and are their improvements I could make?

My current security measures are:
- On my desktop I have my .wallet .info and wallet-data (I use multibit, you'll see why in a second). All of these files are encrypted using the built in Windows encryption tool.

- On a flash drive, I have the actual multibit program (so every time I plug the drive in it doesn't take years to update (Multibit is a lite wallet)) along with all of its files and another copy of my .wallet. When I send and receive BTC, I use the flash drive and do not touch the wallet on my desktop.

- Both wallets use multibits encryption, so if i want to send BTC, i have to type in a passcode.

The reasoning behind having the full wallet on my flash drive is because I like to be able to know that if my laptop HDD does break (again) i can simply plug the drive into another PC and it will require no setup. If my flash drive dies, I can simply buy a new one and take the wallet from my desktop (after decrypting).

If im keeping my BTC secure in all of the wrong ways, please let me know but don't be harsh, im 14 Wink

Thankyou!
591  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitpay/Coinbase will replace Paypal/ViSA some day? BTC platform kicks out ebay? on: June 19, 2014, 03:52:07 PM
Paypal is a con, if you sell something on ebay, they TAX you for it. Then, PayPal TAX you when recieving the payment. Im pretty sure taxing twice is illegal?
Not if they are different taxes... in the US, eBay may charge the local Sales Tax (plus their fees).  PayPal may charge some other money transmission tax (plus their own fees).

Ah okay, thanks for letting me know before i make a fool of myself somewhere else on the internet Wink

Bitcoin can power the future, as long as nothing bad happens :p However, i dont think bitcoin will ever REPLACE.

Managed to get hold of $8 of BTC so far by selling some CEX.IO Gh, although I have nothing else to sell Smiley

Thanks for all the suggestions, I appreciate them!

You can try messing around with faucets but I would suggest looking into a signature ad campaign as well.  Just joined the one below so not entirely sure if it will payout or not but they seem to be worth exploring.
Hi,
Thanks for the reply, i already have!
To me, faucets are one of the worst ways out their!

I'm not saying you are as all of us have to start somewhere and there are many newbs who provide quality information and posts, but there's unfortunately a lot more that don't and it's those few that will always spoil it for everyone. The trouble with letting newbs join is anyone can sign up just for this deal and if they get banned it's no biggie; they just re-sign up again and off they go. Any user who is serious about bitcoin will stick around and contribute and they'll soon make Jnr status pretty quickly so it isn't that much of an issue and provides a bit of a safety buffer at least.

I'm a newbie so I can't really talk, but I do agree with you. I joined last night Smiley

Hey Guys
Im new to bitcoin and would like to know some good ways to earn it! I can't buy any as i'm 14 and my bank will not allow transfers. I have bought 1Gh on CEX.IO which is very low mining power but will do for now.
Any Suggestions Accepted Cheesy
Thanks!

If you are looking to earn BTC, I would highly recommend against mining with CEX.IO. Very unprofitable, and depends on newbies to keep buying overpriced hashing power.

I would sell, but so many scammers around...
