1201  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to Answer "What are Bitcoins?" on: January 14, 2012, 12:06:02 AM
The thing is that it should come up naturally in conversation, then the conversation should flow to the next thing. If someone just comes up to me and starts telling me about internet money (which, after watching that recent Bitcoin TV, is what I imagine Bruce Wagner does) I will assume its a scam they fell for. Also, if your goal is evangelizing rather than just passing along info, I would recommended quoting a value slightly below what it is now (or at least round down to the nearest dollar). It is also good to have other interesting things to talk about as well that establish yourself as a source of interesting information, bitcoin being only one example.

That is kind of rambling, but I really hope there aren't people out there just being like "check out these bitcoins they're awesome".

This. Usually, if I talk about Bitcoin (and I don't, that often) , it's just to start a discussion about related subjects - centralized planning, currencies, financial systems, the Internet, free markets... Bitcoin just happens to be an interesting example of a very different approach to a lot of these things. Generally, if the discussion includes an explanation of what the system is, and that it can be traded for other currencies or goods, people will ask what it's worth, and I can't really answer that without giving an outline of the rollercoaster ride of the exchange rate, and end up saying I bought some when it was cheap (relatively speaking), am theoretically well in the profit zone still but really wouldn't like to say where it's going to go next.
1202  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoinica Problems any one? on: January 14, 2012, 12:01:07 AM
I'm confused by this thread.  WTF is going on here?

quick summary: Naima53 posted a screenshot from back in the summer or maybe early autumn showing an Mt. Gox account with a balance of about 24 million USD. Some disbelief was shown, with claims the screenshot was faked one way or the other, so they provided the login details to the account in question. Turns out, it really did have that balance at one point, and it now has a balance of -700 or so USD. Gox bug, presumably.
1203  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoinica Problems any one? on: January 13, 2012, 11:52:47 PM

Therefor a what to do with it
The account seems pretty worthless, except maybe Naima likes having it. I see no reason not to give it back to him.
1204  Economy / Speculation / Re: Here it comes on: January 13, 2012, 11:14:59 PM
this. is there any good literature on what is supposed to happen once we enter the age of transaction fees?

As I recall, the assumption is that over time Bitcoin will become sufficiently entrenched that parties with interest in keeping the system running will continue to keep hashing blocks even if the fees don't cover the costs, as they stand to lose more if the system becomes insecure.

Is this as bad as it sounds?
1206  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to Answer "What are Bitcoins?" on: January 13, 2012, 10:20:37 PM
I've been emphasizing that it's the first decentralized currency to provide decent protection against counterfeiting. That's the number one feature of Bitcoin IMO. Technically it might be the first decentralized currency, period, since without protection against counterfeiting there's little point to a currency, but that's getting a bit far into it for first impressions.
1207  Economy / Speculation / Re: Oh noes !! It's crashing !! Sell ! Sell ! on: January 13, 2012, 10:10:42 PM
It's been quite the standoff the last few days, hasn't it? As an aside, is it just me, or does the average price seem to be converging on 6.66?
1208  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoinica Helper (userscript) on: January 13, 2012, 10:07:55 PM

It's intuitive to me. This feature is designed for price protection, so if you enter 0.4, it means you can tolerate max slippage of 0.4. Then you'd sell at 6.2 as limit order.

OK. I guess I think about it differently. I use limit orders to catch price fluctuations, to sell higher than the current price or to buy lower, and stops to trigger sells or buys if the price goes beyond a given point. That's where my confusion came from. Either way, as long as it's clear how it works, it's a good tool.
1209  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: nten.org takes a dig at bitcoin on: January 13, 2012, 03:38:39 PM
The best way to convince these guys would be to get them to post a Bitcoin address - or even setup an instawallet or something for them, and get people to donate BTC.
1210  Economy / Speculation / Re: bitscalper anyone use this ? on: January 13, 2012, 02:17:48 PM
If you were starting a ponzi scheme, at which point would you take the money and run?  I think the knee jerk reaction would be when withdrawals start to approach the numbers of new subscribers.

Probably one would just skim off the top all the time and run when there's no longer enough money for payouts to members.
1211  Economy / Speculation / Re: The flipist method on: January 13, 2012, 12:18:49 PM
Oh yea, I should update here. Not much to show, it's a bullish day again, according to the flip, so I'm keeping long. Unrealized profits around 1.5%.
1212  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Edit: Misleading Title. Interesting Experience Today on: January 13, 2012, 08:46:58 AM
So this guy just offhandedly remarks that he's got 7 degrees and an abnormally high IQ? Was that before or after you shook hands? Maybe during?

I would be pretty leery of trusting anything someone like that says.
1213  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoinica Helper (userscript) on: January 12, 2012, 11:25:49 PM
Is the limit order working as it's supposed to? Right now the sell price on bitcoinica is around 6.60, and if I place a limit order to sell with 0.40 in the add/substract box, I'd expect to see a sell order for 7 USD, but actually it places an order to sell at 6.2...

edit: it works as I'd expect it to if you input a negative value. Useful, but potentially dangerous IMO, since it seems counterintuitive to me. Still, very nice script, thanks!

But whatever, I plan to withdraw early.

I'm sure all the users do.
1216  Economy / Speculation / Re: the insurmountable wall on: January 12, 2012, 05:45:39 PM
...my worry is nothing has changed, the resistance to 7 is going to again be exceptionally strong Undecided

Worry? On December 19th, the rates were around 3.2 USD to the coin. That there's resistance now is a sign the market is showing at least some signs of sanity, that's not a bad thing. Remember, easy come, easy go.
1217  Economy / Speculation / Re: Posturing on: January 12, 2012, 05:11:49 PM
I saw the ask wall going up and down on btccharts.com and bitcoin.clarkmoody.com. Didn't check the buy wall on clarkmoody, it was pretty brief. Doesn't mean it wasn't a glitch, of course.
1218  Economy / Speculation / Posturing on: January 12, 2012, 04:49:58 PM
when the slope down to around 6.4 occurred, there was a wall on the ask side, just above the bid prices, of about 1500 BTC being taken up and down continuously. Now there's one, about 1500 BTC, going up and down all the time on the bid side. Glitchy data, or something else?
1219  Economy / Speculation / Re: CEs wont bring many ppl here on: January 12, 2012, 04:27:46 PM
imo CES wont bring many new users maybe just new developers for other products

Whatever effect it may have, up or down, isn't likely to surface for several days, maybe weeks.
1220  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoinica Problems any one? on: January 12, 2012, 12:34:14 PM
= 6.25065
BTC/USD
= 6.36591

I think, it is necessary to cancel rates yet late...

Orders don't seem to be going through at the moment.
