The only thing I can really claim credit for is the number 1.769
[coinhunter]I will now patent it and put it under closed-source license [/coinhunter]
802  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: DO you think doubleC should open an exchange for geistgeld w/ the btcexpress sit on: September 14, 2011, 08:46:35 PM
It really shouldn't matter either way, an exchange would be good to shift money between coins, if everyone knows he mined a fuckton, then the price will be like 0.000001 just like them other forks with large premined or held coins.

Actually, there is, as far as I know, no indication that the amount of coins hoarded by individuals affects the behavior of cryptocoin exchanges in any way (actual attempts to "crudely"  sell off huge hoards, off course, do)  - in fact, BTC has a fukton of coins hoarded, probably more than any other coin older than  6 months.

And, unless you believe in Strong Efficient Market Hypothesis, it really shouldn't.

Meh, as long as he isn't screwing up diffs or doing other "hax" shenanigans, it's perfectly fine.

It's not like we'll have to wait several month to resume mining GG as usual Wink
804  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANNOUNCE] New alternate cryptocurrency - Geist Geld on: September 14, 2011, 08:23:43 PM
Yup. If there is one thing Geist is not "afraid" of, it's the Namecoin Pool Fiasco (well, that and Zeitgeist attacks Smiley )
805  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANNOUNCE] New alternate cryptocurrency - Geist Geld on: September 14, 2011, 08:14:09 PM
I just did some math and found out that if the difficutly of GG was ever to get to 16,000 roughly it would take about 28 minutes to come back down to 1 if I am understanding that decreases in difficulty can range from +400% to -400%.

That sound right?

What adjustment limit factor did you use ?

+/- 400% is the default bitcoin values, and they resulted in large jitter that greatly displeased some miners, so I've dropped that. From the top of my head, current adjust is 176,9%, symmetrical +/-, with retargets every 16 blocks.

I put way too much time into this. But it was fun..
I have made a high res version from the icon Lolcust sent me. Using a program called perfect resize I managed to make it large enough to use in other project, without too much pixel distortion. Like this coin for example. Which is 50% size of original I made.

Theres also this version http://imgur.com/YhR6l with a little more texture.. perhaps too much.

Btw I'll send the high res icon if anyone want it. Just PM.

Neat. You can expect 500 Geists to arrive a mite later today

You're too much of a businessperson, Cosby Wink
807  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANNOUNCE] New alternate cryptocurrency - Geist Geld on: September 14, 2011, 04:28:42 PM
FlipPro is dreaming about a currency with explicit demurrage, Geist ain't not radical enough in its nonencouragement of hoarding for his tastes Wink
808  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Who is more arrogant? BitcoinEXpress or CoinHunter? on: September 14, 2011, 04:07:24 PM
Because "tunneling fists over TCP/IP" causes a crash ?
809  Other / Archival / Re: delete on: September 14, 2011, 03:38:06 PM
change the license

I think he will rather part with the mortal coin via honorable Seppuku than change the license Wink
810  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: DO you think doubleC should open an exchange for geistgeld w/ the btcexpress sit on: September 14, 2011, 01:47:22 PM
Um, I am the founding miner of Geist Geld

I mined the Genesis block Smiley and ~200 blocks afterwards. Just   ensuring technical details are being straight. Carry on Smiley
811  Other / Archival / Re: delete on: September 14, 2011, 01:36:31 PM
Well, new genesis block is assurance enough, as far as I can tell Smiley

I don't have any fundamental objections to having the exchange process start in unison with other coins, though the fact that fixing some of those coins might take no small amount of time due to how slow their blocks are coming through is sad.
812  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: ARE YOU MINING GG? on: September 14, 2011, 01:12:13 PM
I guess at this point we need to establish how you define "inflation" because, well, whether GeistGeld really "has" any inflation depends on said definition - technically it does have steady, fixed increase in money supply, with money supply increasing by 7 units every 15 seconds.

However, the term "inflation" usually  relates to prices, and not size of money supply proper (you can have your money supply increase by a factor of "x" every time period "t" and still at some point in time, get a drop in prices across the board due to a whole variety of reasons)

we should likely start a Geist thread in Economics forum
813  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / [ANNOUNCEMENT-BELATED-JUST_IN_CASE] Geist Geld has been restarted, and... on: September 14, 2011, 12:59:36 PM
...it's doing quite fine, with full suite of "timestamp exploit" fixes, new neat NTP by ArtForz, working Escrow Transaction Signing and stuff Smiley

Doing this because it turns out some folks missed the memo.

Closing this because we already have the main Geist thread to talk about, well, Geist.
814  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: ARE YOU MINING GG? on: September 14, 2011, 12:55:58 PM
not unless it gets restarted

It did restart about 24 hours ago. We are currently at like block ~ 6000.

1) there was an announce

2) the announce was preceded by a vote thread which I made to let people with legitimately mined Geists voice their opinion.

But I will make another announce thread just in case somebody else missed the memo lol Smiley

cool well good luck with that, I dont really trust the situation going with that coin, I saw no announcements or changes. I hope yall make a ton of btc, but geist geld isnt for me. I'd rather see a formal announcement and a statement from Lolcust that the hackers screwing over the community dont have access to any funky mined coins.

There was both announce and a separate thread with vote on whether we should reset (I decided to let people who mined themselves some Geists voice their opinion before going through with any drastic action)

Sorry you missed all that.

I'll make announce thread in case anybody else missed the memo, too.
815  Other / Archival / Re: delete on: September 14, 2011, 12:53:42 PM
Bitcoinexpress arrogance is mind numbing. and personally I wouldnt open an exchange for a coin that was gamed by hackers, and that helped teach dicks how to launch an attack on the communities, totally screwing with peoples investments. People were upset at the premined coins on ixcoin? you should see the shit they did to geist geld.  There is a way to point out exploits and a way to be a dick, bitcoinexpress choice the latter.

1)

I doubt you can blame GG for "teaching" hackers any more than you could blame Bitcoins for bypassing some local regulations or smth.

It's not like blockchain is an AI

2)
*cough*

there was a reset.

*cough*

Also, GG is so far the only chain that implements full suite of ArtForz's "timetravel prevention" fixes (both narrowed down accept window and fixed readjustment "hole")
816  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: ARE YOU MINING GG? on: September 14, 2011, 10:51:51 AM
The stale rates are quite high. I am getting around 30% on a private pool.

I've been pointed to a thread where Bitcoind optimizations for pools are being discussed, and will likely try to monkey some of those into geistd this weekend or so (maybe earlier, I'm sorta on the move now).

I would be very grateful if you agreed to carry out some testing of that branch (assuming I get it work, lol Wink ) via your private pool.

What exactly would a nonstandard tx look like or be used for?

Cunning and complicated things that allow for doing unusual stuff like Escrow (when 2 or more parties have to sign a transaction to decide who would eventually get them moneys) or somesuch.

One of the most attractive, to me, was Gavin's hidden transactions, but it turns out it's not workable for now (I can't help wondering if amendments can be made to make it work without thoroughly ruining things and opening a large can of worms, it is/was such an awesome little thing...hm...food for thought Wink)

Hmm hidden transactions? Any other details or threads you can direct me to on this topic?

The hidden transactions, or rather their tragic demise (at least for now, until   somebody maybe-hopefully finds a way to bring them back to life in Geist Smiley ) were discussed in this very thread, starting here  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=42417.msg521460#msg521460

things like authority-based validation (and in-validation) of small-time transactions, and who knows what else (Definitely not me, lol) might be possible.

In general, it seems like a tower of awesome, though not without risks (I decided that Geist might as well take the risks, since we already have one very careful, very robust coin called Bitcoin Wink )

Just a thought: At the current rate of 15 second blocks and 7 coins per block the entire network will generate an additional 7,000,000 coins in something like 178 days.

With all of the other chains it never took that long to create the bounty sum total.

Just saying it might seem that 7million was waay overkill in terms of diluting the market value if an exchange does come up.

Don't forget that no less than 4 mils are intended to rest forever as buffer in a laundry. Speaking of which, I am getting opinions ranging from "with 4 mils you could launder entire Silk Road (fuck yeah!)" to "with mere 4 mils you will have to resort to laundering 1000-10000 BTC per cycle at most, probably less,  should have gone for 1 bil buffer (awwww Cry )" (But if I did go for such a sum, I would have had to change my username to Lolbernanke and that doesn't have the same ring to it)

And cryptocoin exchanges show zero care about "hoarded" sums as long as the hoarder isn't selling off (which is the stupidest thing to do with such a large load of them), according to some folks I asked

One of the reasons I am generally avoidant of the whole discussion is because it quickly turns into "is x mil too small for a laundry buffer in a 'non-deflationary' coin" which, as I have learned, is a pretty infinite thing to discuss (so I just picked a number that seemed "good enuff" and proceeded to figure out a way to get it without having the net to carry extra blocks)

How fast were the block rate and retargets on this chain again?

1 block per 15 seconds, retarget every 16 blocks.

Lowered retarget limit to avoid large "jitter" of difficulty (works neat, so far)

No imposed upper limit on overall number of geist in circulation

Escrow enabled and working

Nonstandard tx enabled, so if you have That Genius Script Idea, you're welcome.
820  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: ARE YOU MINING GG? on: September 14, 2011, 08:25:06 AM
I still can't get the damn thing to work.  Stupid blockchain. Cry

Are you on poclbm ? Because so far it seems to behave the best "out of the box" on Geist (experiments with other miners welcome, though)

poll is missing

I am not mining and i won't be buying any gggg..

But...but but butbut...Geist's blocks are faster, and Geist has bigger and vital-er security fixes ! Smiley Also, Geist has escrow
