Just to make 8 gigahashes cost over $8,000!!!!

If I go with 10 BFL Singles, it would cost 6k at 8.32 gigahashes

LMAO i just realized there's only 2k of a difference and I can't use BFL singles to play games over the net

For Bitcoin Mining, you can ditch the powerful memory and CPU, just saying.

363  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Questions about a mining rig. on: March 16, 2012, 10:45:50 AM
Damn, so no one would want to buy them once bitmining stops.

What would be really helpful is if somebody knew if the money you saved on power over the course of using the butterfly box is MORE than what you would get if you sold your GPUs. You know what i'm sayin'?

If the money I can save with the low power solution is more than what I would get for selling my used GPUs after everything is said and done. Than obviously the low power solution would be the way to go regardless if you were stuck with it after mining stops.

Calculating this though would be a major pain in the ass. It also wouldn't be completely accurate considering you would have to predict when bitcoin mining becomes unprofitable, and how much bitcoins would be worth.

I suppose this is where the real "risky investment" comes into play. Do I choose option A, or option B?

Calculate that. A gpu can sell for around 50% of its value after vigorous mining.
All you need to do is calculate how much you spend on electricity, and see which is a larger amount
364  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help please. Not minin rig but I'm sure you know something about pci-e extenders on: March 16, 2012, 10:42:09 AM
Pcie extenders aren't the way to go for gaming. Pcie has a trace Max distance of 60cm, and with the extenders, the cards are reaching their upper limit creating timing and latency problems. In crossfire, timing is very important.
365  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help with GUIMiner!! on: March 14, 2012, 10:12:28 PM
Are you running any odd flags or something?

nope, and the only thing within my config file is the Username and pass and rcpallowip=*

Odd, I'm not sure what to say...

I'm going to suggest that you check to make sure you are mining with one profile at a time, that the device is the same, and that the flags are the same.

Good luck.

Check the device you are using for mining. Looks to me like you're using the cpu.

This.

good to see that I'm not the only one who hits refresh on this link (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814103195&Tpk=radeon%205970) first thing in the morning because I don't trust the "auto notify" feature on the site and am too lazy to actually write a wget command that greps for "out of stock" and sends me a page...

On a serious note: In case you guys didn't know, those cards are listed as 'OEM' on accident. From what I've heard, they are remanufactured cards, most of which were bad news. All of that was a collaborative collection of information from Newegg support and other miners.
371  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Radeon 5970 on: March 13, 2012, 01:58:05 AM

your probably right.  i just replaced a fan in one...  there was like 20 screws,  cant they design something with plastic clipons or something?

Rumor has it, that the 7970 has rounded edges, so you won't have to worry so much with cutting yourself on them. Something to keep in mind.
372  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Radeon 5970 on: March 13, 2012, 12:37:46 AM
Stop lying jjiimm_64.  I strong recommend everyone get ebay those hard to use 5970s for good money while you still have the chance.

They are hot, noisy, and 2000 lower lower than 7970.   I mean it starts with a "5".  Can anyone say "ANCIENT".  Ebay it to some suckers for $350 to $400 before the word gets out.

They aren't even worth the time it takes to sell them for that much. I'll send you 1 BTC for each of them, right now, no questions asked. You don't even have to convert it from USD -> BTC!

9 slots still left to win the free coin Smiley

Somebody just asked me if they could participate more than once, and the answer is YES, as long as they are slots open (currently 9) you can participate as many times as you want Smiley.

Imo, that isn't fair, what if I make 9 $10 deposits simultaneously?
374  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Building a DIY UPS on: March 12, 2012, 05:41:19 PM
Just my two cents.  I have done this before for a BBS I used to run(bout 20 years ago).

You get a 1200 Pure sign(169USD) wave inverter put a good power strip to it and plug in the computer. Connect the Power inverter to 4 12 Sealed lead Acid batteries(bout 180USD). At least 20Ah batteries. Then hook a good "automatic on" computer controlled charger and plug that to the wall(must be rated for sealed or AGX batteries).  Do not use regular car batteries as they will vent fumes.  I know it works and its pretty easy. Just keep in mind you will be 10% down on efficency on the power inverter(you gain some by charger not running all the time but it is negligible). So it will cost you more that plugging into the wall. You can adjust the inverter size and battery array to higher loads also.

When in doubt, invert AC sign waves. Making it CA. It is much easier to power your farm with California power.

I'm sorry, but trolling was inevitable. Wouldn't you rather it be me than Randy?
375  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Radeon 5970 on: March 12, 2012, 03:55:06 AM
No that card is ancient, where did you find it.  You should sell it to me.  I will buy it for $350 if it is in good condition.  Another $200 more and you can get a 7970 which is 2000 better than a 5970.
How much would be brand new worth?

You cant get a brand new 5970...

My understanding on capacitors is that disc types (solid state) work with AC

I'd like to point out this wonderful Bitcoin success story: Ogrr.com

The site is ugly!  What it is does is wonderful.

Ogrr is a forum.  It focuses mostly on gamers.  Ogrr's twist over a regular forum is that people can have mBTC balances and trade goods with each other. (FYI: 1,000 mBTC = 1 BTC)

Additionally, next to everyone's avatar is their mBTC balance.  The implication being people with a zero balance have low status. So, everyone has a reason to find some way to have some Bitcoins.

Ogrr has been growing like wild fire.  Ogrr has 1,500 members.  Membership is more than doubling every month.  In the last week it has grown by 500 members.  The previous 500 members took 3 weeks to join.  You can view the membership count at the bottom of the home page.

Ogrr's members seem to be coming from d2jsp.  d2jsp has over 670,000 members.  d2jsp's members have been abused: Advantages of Ogrr and mBTC over d2jsp and FG

Many of the members are likely kids.  Bitcoin let's anyone regardless of age conduct financial transactions over the Internet.  The site has a page that makes it easy for them to find ways to earn Bitcoins: List of websites to earn bitcoins.

Ogrr brings together sellers and buyers of virtual and real goods.  Further, since you can see people's mBTC balance, you can know they have money to spend.  You can tip people with mBTC.  Further, people who engage in transactions can be rated.

If Ogrr continues to grow at this rate in several months, we could have over 500,000 new Bitcoiners.  Imagine if they each wanted 20 Bitcoins. Smiley

I've talked to the owner and he assures me that they will have no problem dealing with spectacular growth.

BTW, the first 1,000 people to register and reach 10 (legitimate) posts get 1 BTC: All aboard!

-Arthur

YES! This is what we've been waiting for! It's only been 3 years in the making!

I want to be helpful. Thinkgeek has a 16 Port Hub, I'm sure that it could be really helpful for someone really wishing to have a huge farm.

I know they ship international, I just don't know what products.

Welcome to the only forum in the world where sneezing the wrong way will cause a flame war!

I really need to trademark that, even though I wasn't the first to say that.
I sneeze in your general direction.

WHAT IF I GET SICK? What if it shorts out my mining equipment?

I'M PRO SANITATION!
