Doesn't the US government track all packages and shipping?  Wouldn't they notice if a bunch of packages where shipped to or from a particular address without any corresponding traceable money transactions?

What is the best way to ship goods anomalously/untraceable?

There are a lot of reasons one might choose to ship a lot of packages without money being involved.  There's also nothing illegal or even suspicious about conducting barter through the mail.

Umm...haven't you heard of the United States Postal Inspection Service, whose purpose includes "protect the nation's mail system from criminal misuse".  And haven't year heard that not reporting taxes on goods or services is a crime?

I don't believe Kiba suggested he was going to avoid taxes.

I am glad to see that this has been added.  I also hope that the Russian users keep posting in the English portion of the site as well though, having this be a cohesive community is a good thing, I believe.
1144  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Shipping Options on: July 28, 2010, 08:12:54 PM
I usually find that UPS is a better shipping option than the postal service.  It costs more than uninsured mail, but less than insured.

It depends on the value of what you are sending I suppose, for one or two games uninsured might be better, but for quite a few you definitely want insurance.  I also have found that UPS is much less likely to lose packages (presumably because they do insure them)
1145  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bitcoin merchant directory project. on: July 28, 2010, 07:52:20 PM
I have been planning a site that allows site submissions from merchants who accept bitcoins where people can rate and review their service and I have noticed many people are asking for such a site.I have a domain, directory script  and hosting available all I am missing is the skills and availability to implement the site.If you have the spare time and skills to work on this project you can take a %50 equity in future income from the site which will have paid and free services and also display your own ads and links.Of course bitcoin will be an accepted payment and will need to be integrated into the site.I think with the future growth of bitcoin a merchant directory is definitely needed.

There is a demo of the site here-http://demo2.directorypress.net/?dd=New-Directory

I know in future there are plans for distributed reputation systems and other things but in the meantime a business directory will help introduce quality merchants to new bitcoin users to lessen the chance of dodgy operators.

I've done webpage development, including working with wordpress, which looks like what this is based on.  I haven't done this in particular, but I have a lot of free time and would be glad to work on getting it all together.  If you'd like to send a private message letting me know what sort of features you are looking for we can exchange e-mails and I can get to work on tinkering around with this and see if we can get it done up properly.

Would you want merchants to be able to add themselves or need to be added by an admin?

The other questions I have seen being discussed here are

Is Bitcoin inflation proof

Are Bitcoins legal tender
1147  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Money Transfer Regulations on: July 26, 2010, 10:43:16 PM
I think that as long as the exchanges stay small we are going to be ok.  I was heartened to see MT Gox add another dollar based exchange even though bitcoin market was not lacking in any way.  Ideally none of the exchanges will get big enough to catch the eye of johnny law, and if the amount of exchanges grows as the bitcoin economy does, rather than the size of any one exchange or group of exchanges, by the time the government is worried about it they wont be able to shut it down.  Shutting down one large exchange is easy, shutting down a dozen is more of a challenge, shutting down hundreds is more work than they will want to do.
1148  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Money Transfer Regulations on: July 26, 2010, 10:40:47 PM
What about exchanging bitcoins for silver rather than fiat money? You could buy silver rounds off ebay for example and have them mailed to an address. How could this be tied back to you and your use of bitcoins? The person you buy them from off ebay has no idea what you are doing and absolutely no motive for saying anything .....All you are doing is legally buying silver.

If you used the open currency standard http://www.opencurrency.com/directory/ linked to bitcoin you could use the AOCS approved silver at all the merchants listed (currently 26,000).There could even be actual "bitcoins" minted for the purpose. Smiley

ebay does not accept bitcoins.  You could buy silver off of bitlist or biddingpond, if you can find someone selling it.
1149  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Auction Site Up and running on: July 26, 2010, 10:32:26 PM
Hello Everyone,
I have set up an auction site that uses BTC as the currency. You can access it at http://www.biddingpond.com .  Right now image gallery uploads are broken and being worked on ( What is working: you can include image links/tags in the item description). Please feel free to auction your items. Registration requires only a valid e-mail address.

Stop by and lets trade some items :-D!

I bid 1.00BTC on the 50 dinar note. It says the current bid is still 0.00. It also says my bid is 0.00. When I try to rebid 1.00 it says " You are the winning bidder and cannot place a bid lower than your previous maximum bid."

I don't know if this seller made a mistake, or not. But it seems possible that he's going to send me this note for 1BTC and not charge shipping to Hawaii. I don't know if he meant that, is it possibly a site error?

Hello,
It does not seem like it is an error as he has free shipping listed in the item Title. Sellers are free to list the items at whatever price they want. There is also a rating system on the site so we can eventually trust sellers with good ratings and not trust those with bad. I'm also working on an escrow module for the site so that larger transactions can be traded safely. I want to automate the process but might set up a manual process for the time being. I also just started a topic BiddingPond.com Discussion in the market place so we don't fill this thread up with questions about the site. The link is http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=574.0.

50 dinar is worth about 4 cents, so less than a bitcoin currently.  Admittedly the shipping is going to be more than that.

I'll send BTC 0.02 to anyone who visits the following articles site:
http://quezi.com/
and scrolls down to the bottom of the page (6 articles). If you're interested in the articles you can read them, but it's not compulsory. Then post your Bitcoin receiving address here, or send it to me in a private message.

My address should be in my sig.  Some interesting articles, I am curious as to your motivation to increase traffic?
1151  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The MOST Important Change to Bitcoin on: July 26, 2010, 09:06:48 AM
Google maintains the rights to code they have designed.  Incorporating it would require data reporting to google.  Generally not a good thing.
1152  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: They want to delete the Wikipedia article on: July 25, 2010, 07:29:29 PM
There are also other wiki's out there with a less deletionist approach.
1153  Economy / Economics / Re: Mises' Regression Theorem. on: July 24, 2010, 08:44:04 PM
Of course they arose out of barter.  Bitcoins were traded for their novelty, and value as a decentralized system.  People thought "Oh hey, this is a cool idea, lets try it out."  "Oh hey, send me 5 bitcoins so I can check it out." etc.  Then, as it became more widespread, merchants began providing goods and services for it.

Granted, the evolution of Bitcoins is quite unique compared to other currencies, but I still say misers theorem holds here.

No, it's not. You guys switched from the crucial point - an existing pre-monetary value of the thing that becomes money, to the secondary one - the process (barter) by which this thing emerges as a universally accepted medium of exchange. It is like declaring that water is good for fire extinguishing because people tried different liquids for the task, and water proofed itself the best one. It doesn't follow, however, that water properties have nothing to do with the matter.

This is the weakest spot of Bitcoin. In "Human Action" Mises said that valuation of money (true money) always includes two components -  valuations of its monetary and non-monetary properties (F = M + N). What does this mean for gold, for example? It means that if, suppose, some nerd, having been hoarding a huge pile of gold, suddenly releases it on the market, he, theoretically, can destroy the M component. Suppose even people would think that gold is not a good means of exchange anymore. But he never can destroy the N component, because it resides in the properties of gold that have nothing to do with the exchange process. Gold is needed as a consumable material for jewelry, medicine, electronics etc. So immediately after the intervention stops, the N component, so to say, kick-starts the process of imputing the monetary value to gold. The question is: where is non-monetary component of Bitcoin? There is none. That's why Bitcoin is vulnerable to all kinds of "loss-of-confidence" attacks. I think that this is precisely what Nenolod is doing right now.

According to Nenelod he is NOT doing that.  he has as many coins as he needs and is on to the next step in his project.
1154  Economy / Marketplace / Re: A question (I hope this in the right place) on: July 24, 2010, 06:45:59 AM
One big challenge for trading in WoW gold is that there are so many different servers.  Gold does not transfer between them, so you can only sell gold to someone who uses the server you are on.
1155  Economy / Economics / Re: Deflation on: July 24, 2010, 06:35:34 AM
deflation of house prices is a bad thing because houses are bought on credit.  Deflation of car prices would be bad as well, and for the same reasons.  If you have a loan which is guaranteed by something which is worth less than the loan then the temptation is to walk away from the loan.  This either leads to possible severe losses for banks or inescapable debt, depending on the structure of debt in society.
1156  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Nenolod, the guy that wants to prove Bitcoin doesn't work. on: July 22, 2010, 10:14:29 PM
cause he's not in it just for the money.  I am excited to see what sort of MMO results from this.
1157  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it supposed to take this long to generate some "phat coin"? on: July 22, 2010, 08:24:54 PM
He claims he isn't using his employers resources, but *shrug*.

Yeah, I saw that after I posted.  I was under the impression he owned the company, which would mean they are his resources.  Just having 1000 spare cores at home is kinda crazy, but I guess someone realy dedicated to computers might.
1158  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Nenolod, the guy that wants to prove Bitcoin doesn't work. on: July 22, 2010, 08:01:44 PM
my speculation is that he is going to use them to buy linden dollars, since that is something he mentioned that can currently be done.
1159  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it supposed to take this long to generate some "phat coin"? on: July 22, 2010, 07:58:42 PM
There's some douche who's got 1000 cores crunching through hashes, so all of us are kind of left out to dry for now. =P
Do we know who this is?  Academic?  Botnet?  NSA?  Chinese hackers?

What are they doing, other than generating most of the BTC?

Edit:  OK, I get that it's nenolod.  So, who's nenolod?

Edit2:  OK, I see that he's the technical director of SystemInPlace.

Unfortunately, they're a US-based company, or I'd consider using them.

I wouldn't.  The guy uses servers he's rented to other people to generate bitcoins.  If I have paid for a server I want all of the cores doing what I want.
1160  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Sent some coins on: July 22, 2010, 07:51:57 AM
I just sent 0.01 to 14 different IPs, I tried all of them, but some were not responding. Also I just noticed that the send coin dialog only works with IP address, not host names.
Also I got one reply on the next block cycle!

hmm, I am pretty sure I was online, but my firewall is zonealarm free, and can be a pain to get anything open.
