I just fad betting on political events and even then only local politics. Indeed, the outcome of political events, regional elections for example, can be highly determined by gamblers. Because usually the bettor will also actively participate in gathering support for the figure he is fighting for. But I have never bet on an international event which to me looks very complicated.

Hard work will give no big impact since luck won't care too much with such efforts.

I won't use $100 to playing gambling for just to win $1 because that is not worth to do. It's better to play for $10 and use small bet to play because we could enjoy the game without risking too big money. All gamblers must have felt the win at least once, but with a huge amount, it is very relative. As for me, 0.1 BTC is already huge enough to win in gambling. I got it couple times in dice game when I am able to hit 9900x payout.
