21  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Security feature will still work as intended? on: March 03, 2023, 02:55:38 PM
Most hot/software wallets use shorter seed lengths than hardware wallets, you're also unnecessarily compromising your security (and might forget you've done that too).

22  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and Avalanche Bridging - good or bad for bitcoin ? on: March 03, 2023, 02:50:56 PM
It'd only be a problem for bitcoin is bitcoin was PoS. I think people like to have ways of exchanging their btc for cash equivelants (like stablecoins) and I'd be surprised if anyone but exchanges and dexes were holding btc (it might also make sense to take loans against btc equivelants in some circumstances but then we'd need to argue who's holding that wbtc then).
23  Other / Off-topic / Re: John Fury didn't sign the contract but wants double payment from Jake Paul on: March 02, 2023, 04:04:35 PM
What do you think about this? Isn't this a shame from Fury to ask Paul money after wining the match without signing a contract?

The offer was fairly clearly made and it was his idea. This is probably free advertising for him now though and presumably the "he shouldn't have to pay it" sentiment is part of that if it's a majority view because it makes him look better when he does.

24  Economy / Economics / Re: Economic power on: March 02, 2023, 03:18:45 AM
I think "means to produce" might be a better term here.

A good economy and the emergence of a strong political power normally stem from being able to produce something. It is normally either food, good transport links or exports.
25  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: My PC cannot detect my ledger through electrum. on: March 02, 2023, 02:29:13 AM
I've used a trezor with electrum before so can only speak from that experience but you normally have to disconnect the device and then restart the software on your computer that lets the hardware wallet interact with electrum. If you miss out that step with trezor the previous wallet often holds a lock on the device (you might just have to pair them before loading up electrum too).
26  Other / Meta / Re: What do you do if... on: March 02, 2023, 12:51:53 AM
If you can, move the old thread to archival to keep the board less cluttered (or change the name of it if you can't).

Mods can't make a thread self moderated after it's been made.
27  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Blockchain on: March 01, 2023, 11:10:32 PM
If you made a token on a blockchain and that blockchain stopped being "maintained" (ie mined) the value of your token would have probably become worthless before the chain did. If it didn't, you'd be able to take a snapshot of the blockchain at a time and tell everyone their coins are available on a different chain (most snapshots are announced before they occur to stop actors like exchanges from stealing money, but they don't have to be).
28  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What makes Bitcoin special unlike other crypto.. on: March 01, 2023, 11:07:43 PM
How well known bitcoin is also plays a significant role here. Most news sites (and probably all mainstream media outlets) don't mention cryptocurrency without mentioning bitcoin. Most people have heard of bitcoin ahead of coins like Ethereum, Polkadot, Solana and Polygon (perhaps also doge but maybe that's just a twitter thing).

It's yet to be beaten on security and market cap too.
29  Economy / Speculation / Re: [News] Mt. Gox will release bitcoin in march - what's next? on: March 01, 2023, 04:34:25 PM
I wonder if this is the closest we've got to mtgox debitors actually receiving their payout or if something similar has happened before and then been stopped or blocked by other proceedings (such as if someone makes a claim after hearing this news, is that still possible to have an effect?)

It's good this is happening over the course of 6/7 months too so it might not have too much of an effect on the price but it'll likely still have some if they don't manage the payments well or if one person gets a huge lump sum. Hopefully it's not a repeat of luna.
30  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Lightning network implementation on Bitcoin Core on: March 01, 2023, 01:47:20 PM
Iirc there are a few lightning network clients that function on top of bitcoin core (I don't know if they share wallets or not but I'd assume they don't).

I think they're intended to be separate though as the lighting network doesn't seem widely used yet and a lot of bitcoin's additional protocols are provided separately. Bitcoin "core" might just be that, the core version of everything you need to do with bitcoin mainnet transactions.
31  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: what when someone's mind changed on: March 01, 2023, 01:34:25 PM
It likely depends on how the bitcoin was stored for tax purposes and when it was bought. You likely don't have to use the exact exchange rate you bought it for if you don't have it (you might be in a country that lets you use the monthly average for example). You can then just log a capital gain (or equivelant) of amount sold * (recent sale price - purchase price). The issue with this example occurs when multiple purchases are made, but then you just need to do more calculations.
32  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Signed txn - inserting scriptsig on: March 01, 2023, 04:21:40 AM
What do you mean? Why are you wanting to merge them if the software hasn't? Why can't you just use the command line to build the transaction if using the GUI has lead to you thinking there's a problem - I think this would be the safest and easiest solution?

Signed transactions are safe to publish too (unless you want to maintain your privacy) - the signing process doesn't mean your funds are spend able by anyone with a signature, the complete transaction must be present too.
33  Economy / Economics / Re: DCG - Parent Company to CoinDesk registers loss of $1.1Billion in 2022 on: March 01, 2023, 01:52:44 AM
Only losing about 20% of their balance sheet doesn't actually sound too bad compared to how everyone performed in that year. I wonder if it gets worse for 2022 though too...

BTC is a quarter of the price it was at the peak so the fact so much investment value has been retained even though crypto value has fallen does show they've done well at something (either not over leveraging or keeping themselves diversified and getting a bit lucky). They do have a lot of insight though from owning one of the largest crypto news sites.

I think it'll be fairly normal to see huge amounts of money flowing into different random investments from these sorts of companies and some doing well and accounting for the losses that are made by the majority of their investments. Ie they may have parts of their portfolios completely exposed to the risk cryptos and defi brings while trying to maintain the rest of their balance sheet.
34  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: March 01, 2023, 01:26:12 AM
"Onionsite Not Found"

seem the site is not up yet, is everyone know how long usually down, have fund need to use

I also can't connect to it, how long it's offline for might depend on what took them offline in the first place. The last time it needed admin intervention I think it took just a few days for it to be fully functioning again - if it's a ddos or automated attack it'll likely come back sooner.
35  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Multisig question on: March 01, 2023, 12:04:04 AM
Are you planning to use all three keys in the multisig wallet interchangeably or is one a backup? You might gain extra privacy by generating your wallet from a key you're not actively using for signing the multisig iirc.
36  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Binance - where is it located? on: February 28, 2023, 11:59:33 PM
If you want a dispute to be heard, I'd imagine you'd go after them in the strictest place they are regulated. I thought their head office was in Singapore and that they were a Singaporean country but I could be wrong on that one.

They have a lot of addresses (they probably share them with other companies too and just accept correspondence there).

Their ceo can say what they want about not trying to hide the company's head office, it's still pretty well hidden if no one knows where it is. There's a chance the company itself is decentralised but then I don't know how you'd trust your board so much in that situation.
37  Other / Meta / Re: what should a newbie do 1st on this forum? on: February 28, 2023, 02:35:44 PM
If you stake a bitcoin address when you've just registered, you're probably not getting your account recovered anyway, you could wait a month or two for that (unless you really love your username).

The majority of newbies would probably register an account and make a post straight away. A lot of newbies will have been lingering on the forum for a month or a quarter before making their posts so will know more about what's expected of them. I think the lingering before making an account or a post might be more "ideal" but it might be unnecessary too (similar to reading the rules here - even though both would give them a better understanding of what and how to write).
38  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to bridge BTC to another chains? on: February 28, 2023, 02:25:02 PM
It's a lot easier to use an exchange like bybit, deposit some funds as btc and withdraw them as wbtc (or btc on another network).

The wrapped bitcoin on other networks are relatively stable but you need some of the coin for that network to be able to use them anyway so it might make sense to withdraw and convert to the native coin anyway. Also transaction fees on eth are expensive, polygon are still fairly high so make sure you take note of that when determining yield.

High yields are either scams or need active management (every few days or a week) to achieve best results afaik don't risk too much if you're just testing things out. Give it a month and see what happens, also try depositing and withdrawing from smart contracts to make sure you can do that. If you're not using a site that's highly trusted.
39  Economy / Economics / Re: What are recommended for businesses that have very high volume of transactions? on: February 27, 2023, 12:38:55 PM
3, 4 and 6 can often work together quite well by having multiple systems able to handle the same processes and changing their state from verifying each other to doing a task alone or just with one supervisor when the system receives too much load. Employees don't need private keys and neither do the servers checking payments (they can all work with from just public keys).

If you're discussing crypto in this, having people well trained to deal with even tiny things like rbf flags is also very important.
40  Other / Meta / Re: The curious functionality of "Report To Admin" button from inside PMs on: February 27, 2023, 12:38:46 AM
The reason to report is tostop the action from being repeated or happening in the first place. If you're not a mod, you perhaps don't need to know how reports are handled to know your report is being read and followed (ie if you're reporting a phishing link, I don't think you need to know if the mod thinks it's suspicious too and it takes time away from their regular work).

If the pm was phishing (or something similar) it might be helpful to post it in meta too.
