I've seen that before. Usually it happens when the unlucky Bitcoin user enters their transaction amount in the txn/miner fee field of their wallet GUI by accident. Live and learn (and get burned)! ;-)

I just got 2 4-module Avalons with power supplies. the units are smaller. I set them at 350 and they are doing 110MH/s each. Not sure if I should change firmware as it is 20130723
Any idea how much power each Avalon is using now? Seems like overclocking to 350 would exceed the capacity of the installed 850W PSUs, unless you've thought of that already and upgraded to PSUs with higher wattage?

Seriously the only way to free electricity is in a dorm type situation or an apartment with paid utilities. Even then you can't go nuts or it will raise suspicion.
Raise suspicion? More like raise a lawsuit. :-) Most standard leases have a clause that specifically excludes you from running a business out of your rental unit. Mining with ASICs could definitely fall under that clause and your landlord could easily sue you for breach of contract with damages for the additional electrical costs generated by your mining business (but more likely he/she will just deduct it from your security deposit). It would probably be easier to hide it in a dorm situation since your electricity is typically not separately metered in that case. Still, you could run into hard limits on the wattage to your dorm room that would limit how far you could take it without tripping the breaker repeatedly. Oh yeah, I guess that will raise suspicion. ;-)

FYI: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=261796Hi All,
Can't post in batch 3 thread as noobie so posting here.
Got my three batch three machines with three cpu each yesterday (tue).
They were shipped via DHL on friday (Jul 19th) and showed up on tuesday (July 23rd).
Nicely made and packed machines. No power cable (not a big deal).
One of the unit had one of the two front LEDs chipped so that LED is not working.
Not gonna complain about it (and honestly, don't care right now) as the unit is working great.
All in all, pretty nice looking rugged box, no stickers or logos or anything on the cover.
They work nice too. Hash rate at one point peeked at @70 GHashes.
so, game on for batch 3 guys.... your shipments should be showing up pretty soon.
Regards.
PS: I'll try to post this in batch 3 thread once i get access but can someone with write access to that thread please cross post this so folks there are also are aware of it?

Seems they don't care about batch#3 customers no matter asked refund or waiting for machines. But at the same time, they are fucking these early pre-order customers by shipping chips!
Don't forget the trade-in customers. They received a decent ram job as well. Congratulations to those who voted "Chips then Batch3" on this infamous poll: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=198584.0;viewResultsBOHICA Batch #3 Customers!

My order still says "Processing". Contacted DHL, nothing yet. Order #45XX

At the very least I would expect them to refund the cost of the PSUs they specifically said they won't be delivering now, for orders that included them.
Where they said that ? Actually - my mistake. I misread one of their emails. They said they are not shipping power cables with the units so the PSUs should still be included on orders that requested them. Apologies!

the best thing for everyone would be if they offered partial refunds, that way they keep some money and customers are all happy.
At the very least I would expect them to refund the cost of the PSUs they specifically said they won't be delivering now, for orders that included them.

Stay on the safe side, eCardOne.com is a licensed European payment institution.
Apparently being a licensed European payment institution didn't stop the U.S. government from seizing your .com domain. Do you have an alternative domain? The U.S. is being particularly idiotic and dictatorial these days.

In case anyone reading this thread with electrum installed on linux wants to prevent these connections without altering electrum source code directly, this shell script did the trick (assuming you have admin access to your linux box): #!/bin/sh
# Block outbound access temporarily sudo iptables -A OUTPUT -d 204.232.175.78 -j DROP sudo iptables -A OUTPUT -d 190.93.243.195 -j DROP sudo iptables -A OUTPUT -d 141.101.112.196 -j DROP
# Run electrum /usr/local/bin/electrum
# Unblock outbound access sudo iptables -D OUTPUT -d 204.232.175.78 -j DROP sudo iptables -D OUTPUT -d 190.93.243.195 -j DROP sudo iptables -D OUTPUT -d 141.101.112.196 -j DROP

Thanks for the explanation(s)!
I always thought that the client was downloading blockchain headers from the electrum server but obviously my assumption was incorrect. Doesn't that make all electrum clients vulnerable to the shutdown of the electrum.org site then? Seems fragile at the least.
The other two queries (new version check and currency exchange rate check) seem like they could be made optional (with a command line option of some sort). Perhaps if I have time I'll fork a version that has that feature.
p.s. The reason I noticed these is that the electrum gui failed to come up sometimes (seemingly randomly) and so I started troubleshooting the network - turns out my network was being spotty.

Hello,
This is a basic question about Electrum security. I run my own electrum server and have configured electrum to only connect to it (no looking for random other servers if my server is unavailable). So, that being the case, why does electrum need to connect to a bunch of other IP addresses on startup?
So far I've logged the following (in IP:port format):
204.232.175.78:80 190.93.243.195:80 141.101.112.196:80
Before I get out my proxy server and start pouring over the source code to figure out what it is trying to do, anyone know why electrum would need to connect to all these different IP address? It seems to be chatty for no apparent reason.
Thanks!
p.s. none of these IP addresses is my electrum server btw.

I know a 128-bit seed is good enough to defeat brute force attacks, but then wouldn't it be even better to support a 256-bit seed? Any thoughts on allowing that option?

Instawallet has been leaking wallet URLs to Google making them fully indexed/searchable. Absolutely devastating security hole. I can't see ever trusting them again: http://www.adaptiveglass.com/?p=656

This concept has been discussed at length before and vigorously rejected: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=85433.0Following these principles merely serves to destroy the important property of Fungibility which all currencies should have. Any attempts to move in this direction should continue to be rejected for this reason alone.
