Interesting tax break in California formgold and silver purchases. On sales of 2000 usd or more for gold or silver bullion there is a sales tax exemption.

So 20000 in gold costs 20000 not 22000

Same for silver. Notice  L-912 california state tax rules.

Gotta keep the little people down.

I traveled to see a total eclipse once, from my vacations in Brittany to Portsmouth via ferry, in 1999.

Unfortunately the UK weather being what it is, even in summer, there was a total cloud cover. We saw everything darkening but no real night because of the clouds.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_eclipse_of_August_11,_1999

Probably the same eclipse I saw when I was living in The Netherlands. (It was a Wednesday).
I think it was only partial, near full from there, but enough for the surroundings to go eerie blue dark.

Pretty decent view at the time (good sunny weather) and I used many sunglasses on top of each other to take a photo. No idea what happened with it though. Probably somewhere in the loft.

I was in Hampshire and it was only a partial eclipse but weather was clear enough to see it. My boss at the time travelled to Cornwall to get the full experience.

@JJG: I know that you just use $6.66K as an example, but that hardly amounts to much in US...basic level living and not even on the two coasts.
A median household income in US is 74.6K/year.
https://www.fool.com/the-ascent/research/average-us-income/

Of course, when used as an add-on, it would provide a boost, but i don't think many on WO would agree that it is a sweet deal after many years of ups and downs.

Meh, it has to be remembered that the 74.6k income comes with associated expenses which may be reduced after retirement. Cars, travel, work clothing, eating out and retirement fund itself. You should be aiming to have your house paid off for retirement and you won't likely be funding college funds for your kids (maybe grandkids but that's more of an optional expense).

Now, if you want to do a lot of travelling, RVing, whatever, you'll want to be budgeting for that but those are purely elective expenses.

ETFs -> n00bs
n00bs -> weak hands

Gotta shake em out every cycle.

Bit of movement on the old FX crosses right there. Bitcoin has actually taken it pretty well, so far at least.

Don't know why the CPI was such a shock to be honest.

Because lies are being told and a large segment of people have been primed to accept the lies.

Gentlemen, next round of drinks is on me, I celebrate the world rat day.

^Honestly I didn't even know that day exists, but then again I happily welcome every good excuse to have a drink  Grin

* psycodad lifts his cup and sings 'rat here, rat now' in the voice of slimboy fast fatboy slim

Anyone can name a day. That doesn't make it official. Speaking of which, it's time we had a world Bitcoin day. Sounds fancier than "the anniversary of the genesis block".

From the polished parts, you can tell that a large number of superstitious wall street bankers rub those bull balls for luck, before starting their day of robbing people blindly in new and creative ways.

When I was in NYC, I popped by to see it (I think I have a stereoscopic pic of it, in fact) and I can say for a fact that it's not just bankers giving the balls a rub.

he surely isn't holding that USD for the longterm

He's surely not retarded.

Hopefully he's investing it into something more sensible like hookers and blow.

Go2RTC, maybe?

Yes, that's the one.

Nice thing is, you can do the auth in go2rtc so it's easy to access the cameras from inside your network (though it's up to you to decide if that's a good thing or not). I'm thinking I might see if I can throw in some contributions on that project as I think there's a few things that would be nice-to-haves (if they're not too hard).

Thanks. First i was after TP-Link, because somebody i know as a versatile tech started using them and was satisfied. He's not much of a IT-security guy, so there's that. TPL abandoned RTSP in their newer models, and there are some quirks to become aware of to be able to choose a good model. Cloud recording would be a no-go, i also want to have remote access, but only through a tunnel/forward on my router's firewall using some dynamic dns service. No fancy cloud app with registering at the manufacturer needed (nor wanted).

EDIT: I wonder if this dip is more or less over...

If you have ONVIF but need RTSP, I found a handy app called GO2RTSP which does some translations. It's a bit opaque but fairly straightforward.

OT: Still deciding on the exact choice of security camera, but i want remote recording. Not cloud-based, but using a wireless hub that connects to my home network via cable or wifi). Why? Because if video is stored on the camera itself, it would be too easy to just grab the sd card after destroying the cam, which means evidence gone. There's also a chance to scare them annoying crows away via built-in speakers on some models, if that doesn't freak out the horses). I put a fat lock on the front/loading door yesterday.

Just FWIW, it seems that often cameras have ONVIF and/or RTSP even if they are supposed to be cloud cameras so you can block them at your firewall. Not as ideal as something purely local but it seems there are fewer options for that and they cost more.

Will never make sense to me…
Having fear for the halving…
IMHO it’s a price increase instead of decrease situation.

I recall being concerned for the 2016 halving but that went flawless and there's been another since then too. Accompanied by passing the old ATH, I'd say everything was looking bullish but honeybadger gonna honeybadger, I guess.

Improved? Sounds like a lot of unnecessary steps when simply sweeping the private key into a wallet (I usually use Mycelium) and then putting the leftovers into new addresses is so much simpler and faster.

Sweeping costs a fee. Mycelium can import private keys directly. Is that what you mean?
36  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: March 17, 2024, 03:59:24 AM
You threw out a lot of smart ideas, and then your last sentence 1BTC=1BTC makes no sense (even though a lot of people say some variation of that in order to attempt to mean something like only BTC matters, which is surely a known logical fallacy even though peeps still get pleasures out of saying that).

It may not make much sense, true but the stability is unparalleled.

Beyond that, I think people are looking for something that doesn't really exist in more than a transitory and ephemeral manner.
37  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: March 16, 2024, 10:31:52 PM
It just depends what you're measuring against. USD has definitely suffered inflation but other currencies have also. You could also measure against gold, some basket of currencies or whatever you want. One measure sometimes used in the UK was the Mars Bar as its value was somewhat stable over time (that may have changed though).

However, if you want a stable measure, as always, 1BTC=1BTC.

You coming off as somewhat crazy... Binance is currently coopted by the US Govt, under strict surveillance.

Everything is completely on the up-and-up there then, for sure.  Roll Eyes Remind me why we have a distributed peer-to-peer currency again?

oh god fucking real estate taxes have gone nuts. I likely will move from New Jersey as I got back to back 20% increases.

Will you know how to fill your gas tank? Are all your miners on solar?

Interesting. It was also my first SSD based netbook, while i did experiment with Linux based VDR (DVB-S) before, in which i decided to install 4GB SSD as a system drive for fast boot, 2007, AFAIR.  My eeePC was a later edition, including 3G sim slot and most components were covered by a plastic sheet inside, for dust protection. It was the perfect tool for hacking on the road and wardriving in urban areas. For now i will move to 12" mediatek netbook, some leftover from my mother, but i will have to install an SSD first, beacuse booting this thing to working state takes at least five minutes.
One thing to add: The eeePC battery held up quite well over all those years.

The netbooks were nice. It's a shame Microsoft decided to embrace, extend, extinguish. Now we have Chromebooks, I guess. I still have an eeepc with Ubuntu myself which is still useful on occasion.
