If I'm not wrong Texas has a law that let's you kill anyone entering your property uninvited after dark.
If I recall correctly the couple that shot the Japanese student did shout "freeze" several times and he did not stop, and it was after dark.
I believe this effectively applies to your residence. You can't just gun down the mormons walking up your drive, even if one is Mitt Romney. |

The defendant (shooter) stated that japanese guy/boy was 'moving erratically' and did not "freeze".
Interesting edit. Not that I would claim it as a good shoot, just that the media tends to present it as a dude just randomly taking down trick-or-treaters. |

Here is my 2c about that "purple" posts and shooting those who went past them.
In short, it is idiotic, imho.
Your idiot opinion has been noted. ... exquisite response to the triggerred liberal ... but pretty sure your purple-marked posts need to be some colour other than purple for the bottom 3-5 feet ... I can bring over a tin of black paint and a brush and we'll get to work painting your black bottoms? .... Or is it bottoms black? Surely the rest of the post would be blue, green, yellow, orange, red for maximum F.U. factor? |

Why? Because it is completely arbitrary and does not accomplish what is intended.
Assume several scenarios:
1. A visitor from out of state was traveling, went to piss past a purple post. He/she has no idea, thinks that it is some kind of a decoration-bam, wham. Not exactly the same, but in Florida a nice Japanese student visitor was killed through the door when he was simply participating in Halloween celebration.
2. A local drunkard drove his truck past the "signs", went out to do #1 as well...bam..wham!
In both cases, those who do the shootin' would be dragged through the courts, charged with manslaughter, and even IF they prevail, it is DEFINITELY not worth it if lives were not REALLY in danger.
Protect the property? Well, bears and rabbits shit on your property daily with no recourse..well maybe they got shot too from time to time, which is fine.
Additionally, assume scenario #2 happened. If the guy/gal who was shot in this scenario was also local, you would NEVER be safe.
His or her relatives...they got 'them telescope rifles as well, don't ya think?
Again, shooting mere trespassers is not legal in any case. Urban legends, old wives tales and the fact that you would probably get away with it if you weren't completely stupid notwithstanding. It's merely supposed to be a no trespassing sign. Though I do agree that it's really not very good from the point of view of someone who has never heard of this totally non-obvious custom. By the way, I do recall reading that there were other parts to the Japanese student (though I think that was Texas) that were not being reported (quelle surprise) which, while not making the event particularly better, do shine a different light on things. |

Painting posts entirely purple is absolutely legal and acceptable.

I read that as a minimum requirement that you can exceed if you so desire. But I'm not a native speaker.
You can exceed it but that is height above the ground. So the bottom of the mark must be three feet or more above the ground. If you painted it extra, then it would be less than three feet above the ground. |

About these purple "no trespassing" markings, can't this be used by someone to get away with murder? You drag someone inside the fence, you shoot him dead, and then claim he was trespassing and did not respond to verbal warnings and warning shots. How would the authorities in the relevant USA territories deal with this?
Shooting trespassers is not actually legal. However, the truth of the matter is that if you have any amount of land, you could make the body disappear and that would probably be that. |

It's probably all normal and stuff, but all these stories about "red" posts, trespassers, etc. made me less interested in buying a ranch, sorry.

Well, it does not look like anything good is happening.
Contrast this with early in the year when almost everybody were salivating at the prospect of selling a bunch at 100K-300K...since EVERYBODY knew that that's were we would be in December.
Too many people looking at inflation and thinking "I'd better keep hold of my filthy fiat as I'm not going to be able to buy as much with it" rather than "I'd better buy something worth holding with my filthy fiat before the government makes it worthless", I suspect. |

It's odd but sensible. One can post signs, but that is messy and liable to loss and damage while painting the top of a fence post purple is cheap and will last years if not decades. It's only drawback is you better know what it means.
Is there a way you are supposed to paint it so people know which side of the line they're on? |

Yes. Threaded forums also suffer from all topics eventually sliding from prominence meaning old threads get retrod again and again. A good usenet thread could last for years. I actually have some thoughts on a usenet 2.0 with cryptography and better decentralization. I should really start putting pen to paper on it. |
