And I thought altchains were an out of control laughingstock before...
2  Economy / Speculation / Re: Call the top on: November 18, 2013, 05:20:36 AM
Methinks we'll see a mass sell-off within the next week, judging by historical data. Top will be ~$400 USD then we'll see it drop to just over $100 again.

If I am right I expect a cake

Me too.

Guess I'd better start backpedaling...no cake for me Sad

Oh well. The massive value gain in my wallet is an excellent consolation prize.
3  Economy / Economics / Re: Do you really believe in bitcoin as a currency? on: November 18, 2013, 05:10:23 AM
I believe in Bitcoin as a commodity. As a proper currency, no...the price fluctuates far too rapidly.

Perhaps once the price stabilizes in the future, I will amend this statement.
4  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Should I open up a coding service to this forum on: November 16, 2013, 02:02:31 AM
Ive seen the coding threads in services and noticed a large lack in coding skill and they are limited on languages so I will be creating a service for this offering more languages and with a higher coding power.

This is why I started a code review and code fixing service...to help reduce the impact of the overwhelming mass of bad code Tongue

And, as a fellow software dev, I see nothing wrong with some well-meaning competition; it forces all of us to step up our skills, thus resulting in better code on the whole, thus resulting in a better ecosystem for everyone. As long as we don't resort to destructive means of competing, of course!

Simple idea

HTTP:TCP/IP::Mastercoin:Bitcoin

This.

Yeah, this is a layout I can understand and support.

OK, as far as speculation goes, let me start with the most simple question for potential discussion: What gives MSC it's inherent value? Or, putting it more bluntly, "why should I believe this protocol will raise in value"?
6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: MASTERCOIN VS BITCOIN - First Speculation thread ever on: November 16, 2013, 12:13:15 AM
I suppose it'd be a good idea to xpost this here now:
Clearing up 10 Misconceptions about the Mastercoin Protocol

For you: see #2 Smiley

This plus the meme-based explanation in your post prior to this one helped my understanding of MSC significantly.

I do like this concept on paper and it would address several of my concerns with Bitcoin. Whether or not it will ultimately be successful, I suppose we shall see...allow me to backpedal and apologize for some of my earlier remarks now Tongue
7  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: MASTERCOIN VS BITCOIN - First Speculation thread ever on: November 15, 2013, 11:51:30 PM

I suppose you're right yeah. When Satoshi Nakamoto invented bitcoin, he just intended people to buy and sell them on exchanges and not actually do anything else with them. All he had in mind were pump and dumps, weekend dips and bi-annual bubbles. He didn't actually intend them to be revolutionary for humanity at all. Best we forget about any other silly aspirations people may have.

And being condescending interblag forums will help save humanity and free us from enslavement from the big banks and then we can all sit in a circle and sing Kumbaya, amirite? You could explain why moving it to the altcoin forum is a bad idea rather than being a prick, but I suppose that would be too easy. And not involve a Moral High Horse +3/+3.

You should explore what a protocol like Mastercoin would mean to the market place in value if it can actually provide a trustless way of creating contracts, betting, distributed exchange, smart property signatures, etc.

2 minutes of poking around on Google netted me the following explanation of Mastercoin from Reddit: "The Mastercoin protocol layer mediates between the existing bitcoin protocol and users-generated currencies. It is intended to be a base upon which anyone can build their own currency."

At the risk of sounding obtuse, I don't see how this doesn't relate directly to altchains; this allows users to build their own currencies based on the Bitcoin protocol, correct? Which would by definition make them alternative cryptocurrencies? Perhaps I have misunderstood and/or this description is inadequate.

EDit:
I think the reason people are dismissing it outright (and understandably so) is that it has the word "coin" in the name. That was a pretty poor marketing decision. With so many new altcoins coming out all the time, we can't be bothered to learn up on them all and what makes them slightly different than the last one, only to realize that it offers no functional advantages. As a result, we've been conditioned to pass right over thiscoin or thatcoin. Mastercoin isn't even a coin, in the sense that the other alts are, it's purpose and goals are entirely different.

Pretty much this. If MSC is a protocol and not a "proper" cryptocurrency, why put the word "coin" in its name at all?
8  Economy / Economics / Re: Best way to turn 2BTC into 4BTC on: November 15, 2013, 10:15:09 PM
Really? I am quite new to GLD but what makes you think it is better then all the alt coins out there??

Spoiler alert: It's just another crapcoin made by people who didn't strike it rich on Bitcoin. There have literally been dozens, and I'm sure we'll see dozens more long after GLD is forgotten.

On topic. The "best" way is highly subjective. Best for you is to set up something really low-maintenance and watch your money grow by itself...secure loans, bonds, whatever.

Best for the community, on the other hand, would be to take the 2 BTC and invest it in a new service - whether your own or a young service you think has potential. Then reap the dividends later if and when it succeeds. Keeping a virtuous cycle like this going can be highly lucrative and (most importantly) helps promote the usage of BTC as a proper medium of exchange.
9  Economy / Services / Re: Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund (.org, et al. registered to raise $1M USD) on: November 15, 2013, 06:41:42 PM
Good luck with the effort! Sent a small donation over. https://blockchain.info/address/1THRF26KAsDDLh1JyWB5Hbm5mYgN6LwZt

First and biggest suggestion for the main site: When the send address is in ALLCAPS, it does not register as a valid address for me. Would recommend fixing that first, then fleshing out the rest of the content so it's easier to donate.
10  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Should I open up a coding service to this forum on: November 15, 2013, 05:56:42 PM
Look in the "services" section of the subforum; there are a LOT of people (myself included) who offer coding/code review/code cleanup services for BTC.

That's not to discourage your or anything; merely saying it's been done. But new coders are always welcome...provided you don't write shitty code of course Tongue

move this thread to alt coin area, please.

+1

+1 from me as well. Keep the latest flavor-of-the-monthcoins in the appropriate subform.

14  Economy / Speculation / Re: please tell me i've done good? on: November 13, 2013, 12:15:56 AM
I'd be curious how being 13 you were able to withdraw from your bank account and buy the bitcoins.

This. I thought most college funds weren't touch-able until you hit a certain age...

On bitcoin price rises: I'm personally bearish and think this recent pop-up over $300 will come crashing down soon. We'll probably see the price consistently rise in the next year though, but I'm not sure about the next 5. Best of luck to you.

On college: If you plan to become some kind of business hot-shot, having a degree in hand gives you a huge leg up. Even if its only for networking opportunities. Just my 2 satoshis. Also, just don't go majoring in liberal arts or some crap that won't actually get you hired.
15  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin could be worth 100x more than today...if you trust the Winklevii on: November 12, 2013, 11:32:01 PM
Title needs to be amended: Bitcoin could be worth 100x more than today...if you trust the Winklevii.

That's a pretty big "gotcha".

Since it has demonstrably gone up 10× every year and even conservative people think $35,000 per bitcoin is doable, there's really not that much of a gotcha.  (The highest reasonable estimates are around $300,000 per bitcoin, which would mean it could be worth 1000× what it is today.)

Because hyped growth is always sustainable right?

Call me a pessimist but I have trouble believing that Bitcoin will continue this meteoric rise in value.
16  Economy / Speculation / Re: Call the top on: November 12, 2013, 11:27:29 PM
Methinks we'll see a mass sell-off within the next week, judging by historical data. Top will be ~$400 USD then we'll see it drop to just over $100 again.

If I am right I expect a cake

Me too.

What historical data?

Basically how the crash back in April went down (I wasn't around for the first major crash). The remarkably steep slope in the price increase has me convinced this isn't sustainable growth, so we'll be seeing a major correction soon.

Reporting back in to say my withdrawal went through fine. They must have been backlogged by requests the other day.

At least my funds are safe. Still a sad day though Sad
