Here we go again with the no grading for days... also, site is constantly overloaded (i.e timing out) these days.

New feature!

You can now import your feedback from Ebay.

Just go to dashboard and click "ebay connect".

[]'s

This doesn't seem like a very good idea.  Buying a bunch of stuff on eBay doesn't make someone any more trustworthy and the (potentially) large feedback numbers will make the meager actual betjam feedback look meaningless.

43  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BETA]Bitfinex - Meta-Exchange and margin trading on: February 10, 2013, 03:54:19 AM
I'm setting up an account to test things out.

On the plus side, this looks like a solid project.

On the negative side, I'm concerned about it getting hacked, shutdown by a financial authority, or borrowers not being able to pay back their money.

I'm heavily bearish on bitcoin. I'd bet a couple thousand dollars of money that it would go down if I could do it securely. As it is (after getting burned on Bitcoinica), I might put a couple hundred into this.  However as a risk-adverse bear who is thinking about loaning money out,  I'm concerned what would happen if all of the people who are long on BTC and are paying insanely high interest rates at bitfinex were to lose all of their money.  Would bitfinex be able to handle the equivalent of a one day crash from $20 to $10?

My understanding is that bitfinex takes on responsibility for paying loans back.  But if the market crashes - will this still work?

Margin positions are automatically closed before the user is "bankrupt".  I suppose if somehow there was a situation where the market was like "best bid $20, second best bid $15" a problem could arise, but I don't imagine anything remotely like that ever arising.

Incidentally, a lender can't really take position on the value of BTC - the profit is the same rise or fall.  One can, however, use USD as a collateral to short BTC.

What's the deal with PayPal verification?  It shows as an option, but there doesn't appear to be a way to actually do it.  Also, what makes it so special as to warrant 6 points?

Hey All,

Please ignore this guy below.

I just need to point something out, like I do every day:

1- If your order fails, we always refund not only the fees but also the price difference if BTC went up.

This is a flat out lie.  I've had several orders fail due to low reserves, demanded my fees back and got nothing every time. I didn't even consider asking for the BTC price difference, although I made it quite clear that I was pissed off due to price move during the outage.

Instead I got a "most people understand how our service works," implying it was my fault that the order failed, when I said you should at least warn people about not being able to fill orders.

EDIT: I have been given a generous refund for not only the fees on my messed up orders, but also BTC price difference.  Consider me very impressed.

+1 a Security Feature!

Eventually, the scammers will run out of phones, facebook pages and linked in accounts to authorize their bogus accounts with, or it will become too much of a bother, and they will just wither away.

All 3 can be created at will for a few cents worth of effort.

Even a phone to SMS to?  I guess it's easier than I thought.

There are a number of free/virtually free services which provide ordinary looking phone numbers capable of receiving texts and phone calls through the internet.

It isn't illegal in Russia. It's quiet normal for a Russian company to ask for a passport. Let put this way noone would give a credit in Russia without a passport. You cant even open any accounts like mobile or cable without a passport.

Nor its illegal in USA, since they will even ask for your SSN.

Yes, you can ask for documents. In bars they ask for ID to sell drinks.

Its illegal to ask for documents with the purpose of collecting debt if you are not licensed to do so. search google for "Fair Debt Collection Practices Act".

A debt collector is defined as a third party not involved in the transaction.  Again, it is NOT illegal for a lender/potential lender to ask for identification or any other document they want.

2 more successful transactions via PM brings the total to $485 traded over 5 orders.

I asked the parties involved to post here, but they have not.  Since they might not want their names associated with gambling, I won't post specifics here. However, I can provide a screen shot of the balance adjustments at 5dimes upon request.

Any idea why I keep getting "Gox coupon deposit failed" on random orders (for example order 3f9c8d82-de3f-4eba-9ac7-3a620a0d20b4)?  If I create a new order and use the same coupon code, the order fails again.  However, if I cancel the code and create a new one at gox, the order goes through just fine.  Seems like it must be an issue on your end.  I have encountered this problem at least 6 times in the last week.

i'm having problems verifying my bitcoin-otc identity. i keep getting the error: "Error retrieving gpg keyid.", when inputting the GPG key of "C35572AAF9E6D832" found here.

am i doing something wrong or is this a bug?

I think it is a bug.  I've been having the same problem for weeks.  Tulkas asked me for my gpg key, which I provided, but hasn't replied to me again despite multiple attempts to get in touch.

...even with a 45 coin loss...

No loss on that one: PayPal reversed it. But I've experienced some losses in the past, absolutely!

(go even further back in my posting history, you'll find more Wink )

I'm sure I'll have losses in the future, otherwise I'm not managing credit risk properly.

Not bragging; No malice; Not trying to troll: I'm just suggesting that lenders take responsibility for their choices.

Glad to hear that you recovered the coins.  No one likes a scammer.

I have no problem with you and I agree that lenders should take some/most of the responsibility for their losses.  That does not, however, mean that BTCJam is doing its part to stop scammers.  The site is almost entirely filled with scam/highly questionable listings (of which well over 50% never get funded) for a reason - the way things are set up, there is no consequence for scamming, and its easy to cover one's tracks and run the same scam over and over again.

Did I hear someone say "Put-up or Shut-up"?

Congrats on your profits and I hope your remaining 177 is paid (honestly).  Looks like you've made wise choices, at least so far.  On the other hand, I'm not sure I'd be bragging about my judgement if I got scammed out of 45 BTC (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=135929.0), but hey everyone makes mistakes.

Of course, even with a 45 coin loss, you are a million times better than gweedo.  He is all air and trolling, and doesn't have the guts to post his full record.

ZOMG SHOOP!

I agree with what your saying, there is a skill in picking out the non-scammers. the total I have been scammed for is <0.5BTC (those loans were mainly "for the lulz"). I had around 80BTC invested in the site at one point. The only thing I don't like about BTCJam is the lack of comeback against scammers as they will not release the docs, which is why I've decided to stop using it.
Thank goodness I haven't started investing yet.

John,

The lender cannot have the documents, this is illegal, BTCJAM can't handle they to you and even if you decide to lend on the forums, every time you ask for documents in order to lend money to U.S., U.K or Russian (and many other) citizens you are breaking the law!

It's illegal in all the above countries (plus 140 more) to conduct this kind of non anonymous, non arbitrated lending activities. After all, what you intend to do with the documents?? Go after the borrowers and do what? It's illegal to lend anything in this fashion, let alone contact the person asking for payments.

The purpose of the identity verification is to create an ecosystem of trusted peers, this is already happening. We are also working to get a collection procedure in place, this is being made in a legal fashion, backed by international laws.

Do not do it by yourself, you cannot go after the borrower because lending money directly to another person in this fashion is illegal to begin with, our system is a safer and legal way to do that.

Um, it most certainly is not illegal to ask to see someone's ID in the United States.  You probably can't hand over the docs to lenders, but is only because you didn't tell people upfront that you would do so.  It is NOT because of some law forbidding non-anonymous lending.
57  Economy / Gambling / Re: BitPoint - Unique point buying game on: February 05, 2013, 04:28:25 AM
Interesting idea; I gave it a try.

One suggestion: add a feature to clear your (unplaced) bets.  I misclicked and had to reload the page to clear it. I'm sure I won't be the last.
58  Economy / Gambling / Re: Fund your 5dimes.com acct (a leading casino/sportsbook/poker site) using bitcoin on: February 04, 2013, 10:10:46 PM
FYI: It looks like 5dimes accounts can be funded with Visa cards, so these transfers might be reversible.

And, on another note, how do we know this is the same guy on that forum?

(Sorry for being so skeptical, btw.  I'm sure the guy is legit, but I just want to make sure.)

Funding is being done from my balance at 5d.  I don't believe you can fund someone else's account directly for them (although I could be wrong).

Feel free to PM me on sbrforum.com if you like.
59  Economy / Gambling / Re: Any sports bettors here? on: February 03, 2013, 08:43:22 AM
I'm no expert handicapper, but I love wagering on the nfl. After that, nba action is always fun. Can't do college sports as I know nothing about it. I've always been a fan of btcsportsbet.com as they usually have fairly good payout odds. But the wagers they offer are simple and straight, nothing fancy. Just spreads, money lines, and o/u. I, too, wish I could find a sports betting site that offers tons of props, parlays, teasers, and pleasers. If anyone knows of such a site, please do reply to this thread and enlighten me.

5dimes.eu is the industry leader in props.  Obviously, they do not take bitcoin.  However, I am offering a no mark-up BTC to 5dimes cash conversion service:  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=134599.0
60  Economy / Gambling / Re: BlockBet.net - New Online BTC Sportsbook on: February 03, 2013, 08:39:26 AM
I noticed you don't have real time lines. If you needed a feed just sign up at pinnacle sports and request an API key in the settings. You can query their API once every 5 seconds for an XML odds set.

BlockBet's main competitor is just a Pinnacle clone.  No one needs two Pinnacle clones, so it would be a competitive mistake for BlockBet to go that route.
