281  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: PayPal set to suspend domestic transactions in Argentina on: September 14, 2012, 03:35:14 PM
Why haven't we seen, for example, a wallet client with built-in buy/sell bitcoin function? As in, Mt.Gox in your wallet. I am a 100% sure this would greatly facilitate life for new adopters.

Actually there has been MtGox Android client for at least half an year or so, maybe even longer. It is pretty crappy, but still Cheesy (always crashed when I tried it, nowadays I don't use mtgox any more).
282  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Local bitcoin economy? on: September 14, 2012, 03:21:29 PM
Actually my long-term vision with localbitcoins.com is to make it "trade anything locally with bitcoins" marketplace, not just cash... Smiley
283  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: PayPal set to suspend domestic transactions in Argentina on: September 14, 2012, 03:20:21 PM
They have a very long history of currency instability, but they'd much rather go for something that they know, that they can use easily and that's not as volatile at bitcoin: the dollar is king in Argentina. And after the dollar, other fiat currencies or precious metals. Bitcoins are nowhere in their psyche.

Yeah, true. But bitcoin is still there, and although not very understable, its properties are superior to any other alternative such as gold or dollars. In the long run people will see this. Meanwhile the early adopters will start to use it and benefit.
284  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: PayPal set to suspend domestic transactions in Argentina on: September 14, 2012, 12:10:28 PM
Blocking bitcoin traffic maybe?
If your answer is encrypted tunneling then they can block that.
If your answer is use Tor then they can block access to Tor.
In any case, they have enough points of attack to cripple general bitcoin use.

Short: "They could block bitcoin by disabling internet". Good luck with that Cheesy

It is not trivial to block tor, for example. China has been pretty succesful with it, but they have enormous resources compared to country like Argentina...
285  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: PayPal set to suspend domestic transactions in Argentina on: September 14, 2012, 11:28:29 AM
My theory is that in these countries like Argentina bitcoin will be huge success, because:

- Easier to transfer than dollars/euros/other foreign currencies
- Cash and other valuables can be confiscated at the border, bitcoin can't
- Many people in these countries dream of moving to somewhere else, and bitcoin is the ultimate tool for that -  it is fairly easy to convert bitcoins to other currencies in any developed country.

286  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Cold storage security on: September 12, 2012, 08:20:05 PM
But here's the problem:  People know where I live (or could easily find out, as I make little effort at hiding my offline identity).  If I have thousands of Bitcoins on hand, and people know that, then I fear I would be making myself a target for home invasion.

How big risk this really is? The money is behind a safe, which only you know the password to. So they have to threat you with violence to get the private keys/bitcoins. To me it seems like a high-risk operation from robbers viewpoint.

288  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [BPM] Bitcoin Project of the Month: 2012-09 - Nominations on: September 12, 2012, 01:29:05 PM
I nominate Bitinstant's paycard:

http://codinginmysleep.com/6-8-weeks-until-bitcoin-debitcredit-card-says-bitinstant/

I know,  this project was discussed this month a lot - FOR A REASON! It'll make it so much easier to use bitcoins in daily live purchases, lower the entry barrier for a broader public and help bring bitcoin to mainstream adoption.

Let's Vote Instantly!

LOL, let's then nominate all vapourware projects... Remember, these guys have not delivered anything yet!

There already are anonymous visa/mastercards, which you can use pretty easily with bitcoin...
289  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: Bitcoin London 2012? on: September 12, 2012, 12:02:56 PM
Ouch. harsh! People have borderless access to Prague via car, bus or train from several adjacent countries. And it's not so far from some of the Eastern European countries either. Whereas London is not only on an island, it's not really known as a "low cost" destination either.

Yep, this conference is going to hurt my wallet. I would be more happy to invest that money in development of cool bitcoin products/services Smiley But I guess the organizers want to focus more on business-y types than to cheap ass hackers, therefore the location.

But I think it is going to be worth the investment, let's see. If anybody wants to chat, feel free to approach me, I'm bald guy with a beard Smiley

292  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Finland might be the first country for widespread Bitcoin adoption! on: September 11, 2012, 07:14:25 PM
EDIT: I guess that Finnish Central Bank representative's statement was simply an acknowledgement of the fact that there is nothing in the current laws that would prohibit individuals to have private keys and have the ability to send and receive specifically formatted messages signed with those keys and eventually stored in a public database.
That's the gist of Bitcoin. Any legislation aiming to prohibit that would need to deny any individual the ability to have privacy and keep secrets. That won't go easy.

By default trading anything is legal. The representative also pointed that it is legal to use barter or "squirrel skins" (used to be money in history of Finland) for trade, and "this is a free country". They have to make separate laws if they wish to make bitcoins illegal.
293  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Finland might be the first country for widespread Bitcoin adoption! on: September 11, 2012, 02:01:04 PM
And additionally you can buy silver and gold with bitcoins from an actual store in Finland as well: http://hopea.fi/ (sorry, only in finnish).

Over-the-counter bitcoins coming soon...
294  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Finland might be the first country for widespread Bitcoin adoption! on: September 11, 2012, 01:57:10 PM
OK, I don't want to be nationalistic, but what about a little competition between countries in bitcoin adoption metrics?

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/bitpay-exceeds-1-000-merchants-130000458.html

"As a result of the secretary of the Central Bank of Finland publicizing that bitcoin is legal to use in Finland, many businesses have seized the opportunity to accept bitcoin. Some of the rather unique merchants in Finland include a dentist office, a veggieburger restaurant chain, and a funeral service."

295  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MATTHEW N. WRIGHT IS A SCAMMER on: September 09, 2012, 05:51:37 PM
No funds changed hands.

Obviously folks on this board have a lot of choice words for him but scammer does not seem to fit if we are defining the term scammer as someone who is fraudulently in possession of someone else's good or funds as a result of a trade or deal in which one party did not uphold their end of the agreement.  "Possession of funds or goods" being the operative term.

Your definitions suck. I would bet that any sensible definition would label Matthew as a scammer. Scammer = someone who promises something but doesn't keep his/her promises.
296  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: I'm giving 100% ROI away to anyone who thinks pirate is a fraud on: September 09, 2012, 04:25:56 PM
What difference would my bet make to your magazine? I must be missing something.

Not much really, if I really liked your magazine then I would order it anyway. But since your magazine has been pretty crappy otherwise as well (timetables etc suck), and additionally you waste your time on these forums behaving like a 10-year-old, it is much easier decision to not support your businesses. Better to use that money for something more sensible, like sponsoring the core developers.
297  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: I'm giving 100% ROI away to anyone who thinks pirate is a fraud on: September 09, 2012, 04:16:27 PM
tries to be funny...

... is NOT

There are some like me who never took any part in to these schemes, and I have to say that for a completely outsider it is pretty funny Cheesy

First funny thing was idiot people investing in pirate40 and believing him to deliver the 3300% annual ROI, after that people believing that Matthew would give money out for free. Hilarious Cheesy

But yeah still, I'm not continuing my Bitcoin Magazine subscription after this thing. I can't support behaviour like this.
298  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin App Market for Android on: September 09, 2012, 04:07:58 PM
Pretty old idea. If you think it would be a good business, why not to start it? The business model would be pretty easy, just take % from each trade.

.. except that if you start to think about it, there isn't much of a market. Unless you find some special niche which would ecnourage people to invest in bitcoins just to use your app store. Or otherwise if you start it as a hobby project.
299  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Buying 50.000 BTC on: September 09, 2012, 11:18:44 AM
The early adopter fallacy: how do you know when to sell? If you buy bitcoins at 0.25, it is pretty probably to sell at 5 or maybe 10.

So, probably if OP has managed to buy back then, he could have sold at 2 USD or maybe at 30 USD. Who knows.
300  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: how could bitcoin work with NFC? on: September 09, 2012, 10:57:07 AM
The same way as with QR codes - just less hassle transfering the information.
