241  Economy / Services / [WTB] Logo for Payments Hackathon - 5 BTC on: October 16, 2012, 01:00:36 PM
Payments hackathon is a programming/hacking/freeform event we are organizing in Finland, 7-9 December. It is bitcoin-related, while the theme in broader scope is payments in general.

Tagline (would be nice to have under the logo): Bringing Money and Payments to the 21st century!

http://paymentshackathon.com/index.php/Main_Page

The logo will be competition, and the 5 BTC will go to the winner which I will decide on next Sunday (21th this month). To participate, just submit your logo to this thread.

Note that the event is non-profit, therefore we are not able to pay more than 5 BTC. However if you make great logo for us, you are also supporting the bitcoin movement Smiley

Edit: one additional rule - we might close the competition earlier if a suitable winner is found. So be quick!

Helsinki Payments Hackathon, 7-9 December: hackers will gather in Helsinki geekdom for a weekend of intense coding an collaboration.

This event is for the general public, and not only programmers. We actively welcome people with diverse skills like media or activism. There are many interesting non-programmer ideas around.

Refreshments and food are sponsored.

Free event. If you want to help the organizers, sign up to the facebook/google plus events, so we can better estimate requirements for space/refreshments.

Note: while the theme is payments generally, there will be lots of cryptocurrency enthusiasts, and many projects will probably involve bitcoin Smiley

PS. if you want to participate in any way, feel free. Msg me your email as a private message so I can add you to the wiki.
243  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I posted some flyers in public downtown yesterday on: October 16, 2012, 08:21:12 AM
The posters at http://coinabul.com/promote/ are a good start but not exactly what I'm looking for. I did not manage to locate the poster printing functionality on https://localbitcoins.com/ just yet; perhaps that requires having an advertisement.

Yep, you do need an advertisement, because the flyer is advertising _your_ cash exchange. So it is very useful - you put the flyer to some billboard, some potential customer will spot the flyer, grab your exchange address and buy some bitcoins from you - allowing you to profit. And also excellent way to market bitcoins and help the average Joe to get started with bitcoins right away.

Example, my flyer: http://imgur.com/WPIFp (sorry for the finnish language, my exchange is obviously in Finland)

Edit: and btw, the flyer looks much smoother as original PDF, imgur converts the pdf to crappy quality...

So you are basically planning to do crowdsourced market manipulation? Not gonna work. You have funny branding though, as if "criminal scum" were the target. This would as well harm honest traders or legit btc investors/users. But it won't work so it doesn't matter.
245  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Would anyone be interested in buying pre-configured pirateboxes on: October 14, 2012, 10:57:13 AM
Yeah, basic marketing. You don't ask your customers for a price, you have to decide it yourself. And also it is better advertisement.

Decide a price and I might buy it Cheesy
246  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I posted some flyers in public downtown yesterday on: October 13, 2012, 10:39:11 AM
On localbitcoins.com, we have a "print flyer" functionality, which prints out nicely designed PDF flyer, which you can put to billboards etc.

A great way to promote bitcoin, and also make some pocket money from the new bitcoin users by selling them their first bitcoins Smiley

Coinworker.com has been working for quite a long time succesfully, and pays out pretty well (at least to my knowledge, I don't use it myself).

248  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Negative balance on: October 09, 2012, 08:38:54 AM
access to my -0.0005 BTC
So, is negative balance possible in LocalBitcoins wallet?

I'm guessing that this could occur when you transfer your entire balance to another address, and they charge you the transaction fee.

You guessed right. We have just been too busy to fix the transaction fee issue.

Now the service has been moved to a much better server. There was error with captchas, which is now fixed. If you spot anything unusual or still experience failed logins, please drop us an email to support@localbitcoins.com
249  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Spinner / Schildbach / MtGox for Android on: October 08, 2012, 07:33:54 PM
Added, as well as Instawallet. Usability tests still pending.

Easywallet seams to have many more features than instawallet, which I like. Hope I also trust you some day like I trust instawallet (for whatever reason Wink ).
And how about the fees? Also: Would you sell me BTC at 5$?
The Scan QR Code button does not work on my Motorola Defy but it works on my Motorola XT531. Edit: The defy was just slow. 2 minutes slow. Else the QR-Code integration is cool Smiley
The page seams a bit lengthy:

For the trust part I want just to say that we are a registered company in Finland, and I as the head of that company am public person - for example, I have been organizing the bitcoin hackathon events and I was also a speaker at last bitcoin conference.

The fees are now fixed 0.002 BTC per outgoing bitcoin transaction (bitcoin network fee included), transactions between easywallet.org instances are free and instant (also more privacy, no real bitcoin transaction is generated). Features like dead mans switch and coupons have their own fees.

We will try to make the page shorter & less text-heavy.

I use our wallet app easywallet.org - it works as easily as a native app, and recently we introduced one-tap payment -functionality. This is handy in the restaurant I go to, which accepts bitcoins.

Of course this kind of low-security hosted wallet is only suitable for small pocket change. I use it for small payments between friends, and to pay for my lunch in my favourite bitcoin-accepting restaurant, vegemesta Smiley

Edit: One-tap-payments: http://localbitcoins.blogspot.de/2012/09/one-tap-bitcoin-payments-with.html
251  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] LocalBitcoins.com - a location-based bitcoin to cash marketplace on: October 08, 2012, 06:47:15 AM

Strange.  No, I'm not getting successful login.  I was able to reset the password but even that new password didn't yield a successful login.
Browsers tried: Chrome v18, Firefox v15.

Been researching the problem, it might be performance related. Might also be something else (something related to the session cookie, or server running out of session space). In any case we are upgrading the server ASAP, today or tomorrow.

Edit: sometimes clearing your cookies help.
252  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] LocalBitcoins.com - a location-based bitcoin to cash marketplace on: October 05, 2012, 10:39:56 PM
Hi, a security issue was found with the localbitcoins.com transaction feature, and therefore all outgoing transfers are now handled manually. The site can still be used, but you have to use direct methods for doing the transaction (mobile/laptop/paper wallet/etc).

Please not that all customer funds are safe - just don't use the transaction feature.

http://localbitcoins.blogspot.de/2012/10/localbitcoinscom-transaction-feature.html

To make a claim, log in and contact us through this form: <deleted>
This way we make sure that it is the right guy requesting the funds. Provide your bitcoin address so we can send the funds to you.

We sincerely apologize for the hassle.

Edit: the issue is now researched, fixed & tested, and the transaction service is up and running again.

Pointless rambling. If you don't like TBF, don't give money to it or start your own foundation. A thread like this doesn't add any kind of value at all to anyone.
254  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What got you hooked on Bitcoin? on: October 03, 2012, 04:11:48 PM
I would not change my precious bitcoins to crappy paper money, unless it is to introduce new people to bitcoin... I don't understand those who want to "cash out". Bitcoin is the best form of money, why change it to some crappier alternative (unless you want to short-term speculate).
255  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What got you hooked on Bitcoin? on: October 02, 2012, 08:42:13 PM
The idea of markets where barrier of entry is dramatically lower than in any existing markets. Anyone can just start using bitcoin, without any kind of permission, identification or licences.
256  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] LocalBitcoins.com - a location-based bitcoin to cash marketplace on: October 02, 2012, 06:19:30 PM
I want to register my otc account with LocalBitcoins, but my OTC account was done with GPG and not a Bitcoin signature. Is it possible to regster my OTC account? I've tried submitting my GPG signature and it doesn't seem to work.

You have to add bitcoin address to your bitcoin-otc profile.

;;changeaddress <bitcoin_address>

257  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ecsda.org: Diaspora node for Bitcoin users on: October 02, 2012, 05:22:27 PM
So, what are the benefits? I don't really mind ads. Why should I register to that diaspora?
258  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] LocalBitcoins.com - a location-based bitcoin to cash marketplace on: October 02, 2012, 09:25:08 AM
Other than that, we will keep developing the site further and making it easier (and safer) to use.

I'm noticing the number of countries and cities increase.

Can you provide an updated total of active traders?  Maybe broken down as total (buying), total (selling) and total (buying and selling) (which would be less as a person that both buys and sells shouldn't be counted twice)

and put expiration date like 60 days Smiley

This we will put pretty soon. However on the statistics side I won't invest any resources there, since making the site better otherwise is on much higher priority IMHO.

Sorry for the slow updates. We are kind of overworked right now, but I still believe in the sites future and plan to continue developing it.
259  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Easywallet.org - web based wallet, iPhone/Android clients with QR Codes on: October 01, 2012, 10:44:55 AM
Would there be room to display the value of those coins in USD or currency that I choose?

The reason is, if I am purchasing in dollars but the amount presented to me for payment is in bitcoins, I can't easily know how much I am actually paying.    If I can see the USD equivalent (using Mt. Gox last, or maybe 24 hours VWAP, for instance) I can know pretty quickly if the merchant is taking a little too much liberty with the exchange rate.

Hmm, I will think about this. However the restaurant I go to, uses bit-pay and they have fair exchange rate (to my understanding). This is juggling between how easy it is to use, and if there is problem of trust. I'll think about it.

For some reason that barcode scanner (with the zebra) is not working on my iPhone...

Yep, it is pretty buggy. You can try restarting your phone or reinstalling the app. It is open source software, so I'll try to fix it when I have more time: http://code.google.com/p/zxing/
