281  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Applet Vanity Address Generator on: April 23, 2013, 02:09:24 PM
How about giving time estimates rather than things like "Hard", "brutal..."?
.
You can calculate this yourself. The address is written in base58 which means that you would have to go through on average W=1/2*(58)^n addresses where n is the number of characters in your vanity string before finding your vanity address. For n=4 this means W=5.7m addresses. I can only calculate s=20-30 a second so this calculation would take me t=W/s=63 hours which is more than two days...

The algorithm can probably be speeded up and it should also be much much faster to calculate this on an ASIC since you are basically doing a lot of the same work as when calculating hashes for bitcoin mining.
282  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Porn industry is beginning to adopt on: April 23, 2013, 01:57:18 PM
People have been saying for a while that buying porn with bitcoins would make sense, because of the anonymity. It looks like this is quickly beginning to happen.

Last week MetArt began accepting
[NSFW]  http://www.metartnetwork.com/bitcoin/

And in result of that, this week FreeOnes is now accepting.
[NSFW]  http://my.freeones.com/cgi-bin/mainpage.cgi

Both are fairly large porn sites, and it looks like many others plan to follow.

I found this reddit thread interesting, which was made by a staff member at FreeOnes
http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1cv0vu/ok_we_gave_in_too_you_can_now_buy_myfreeones/

One question was asked:

Quote
I always figured that the monthly charges were a big part of how porn sites got revenue, from people who would forget about the charge until the next month. Is this not true/how are you dealing with auto-renewals?

Which the guy from FreeOnes responded:

Quote
I would say that's one of the biggest myths in adult. People actually do care about their cc statements specially the last few years with the economy being so bad and people being more aware of their sendings.
Of course you have people forgetting to cancel but that's not what most revenue is coming from.

I think we could be seeing a lot more of this in the near future, now that some big names have taken the step.

Tragically it will all lead to children being abused once them Catholic priests, corrupt politicians and figures of authority caught up.

Looking for excuse to do something bad and later say it's not me it's bitcoin fault... sick bastard...

What are you on about? The sick bastards are the ones needing anonymity to keep their sick fetishes a secret.
Go troll somewhere else, please.

Great to have you back. Thanks for the music videos in the meantime!

I'm pretty sure that I don't deserve the attribution of the videos. I didn't have time to enjoy them but I will when I'm bored.
Well, you have a name in the community as you are well aware of. I am looking forward to your contributions.

Pretty much said it, OP'd better stay low key.
For the record, I have no problem with Zhou Tong. I was not involved in the bitcoinity problems and I have no strong opinions on the issue. And I am not sure this is the right place to discuss it.
284  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I'm back! on: April 23, 2013, 03:04:43 AM
Fascinating! It seems like no one can ever really stay away from this place. I guess the next thread will be started by Pirate or Clipse.

Satoshi?  Wink
Give it five-ten-twenty years. He will reveal himself then, I guess.

I guess that Norway is a member of FinCen? Then money launder rules apply to investigate bank transfers to and from Bitcoin on suspicion.

A guy buying a lot of coins from a money changer could trigger a request for the wallet address the coins are transfered to. The police and public prosecutor alone decides which information is relevant for an investigation of a suspected crime!

I can't really see how Bitcoin is excepted after the FinCen recommendation from the 18'th of March.

Am I wrong?

No, you're right. Norway is the part of Texas where Ice Bears walk in the streets.

FinCen is an American federal anti-money laundering agency. Norwegians are not subject to their decisions.

Maybe a little spike as the idiots that bought into this story (ie sold coins) buy em back
Or how about nothing happens and it continues to be an extremely boring day ...

The volume has been low, ergo there are no idiots who sold their coins.

We are talking about buys being delayed by 6-24 hours, nothing more, but even this, when deployed, will raise us to $128 minimum, perhaps $135 or even a post-crash high, at the instant it starts.

Tuesday used to be a rally day... Cool
I consider the April 10th crash a bit like the Black Monday crash of Dow Jones in 1987. The market fell 25 % only to increase tenfold the next 13 years. Sure, much of it was inflation but the charts look nice Smiley

I think bitcoins might move faster than a tenfold increase in 13 years, though.
290  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Norwegian finance minister - statement about Bitcoin on: April 22, 2013, 03:56:07 PM

A sensible pragmatic answer. The big question still unanswered: How can a government and issuer of a national currency tolerate a public global easy store of wealth? That's maybe the "
I will monitor developments" part?

More or less the same position as Denmark; wait for the EU to rule!
Link to statement from Danish politicians??
No official political position exists but Fimp has approached "Finanstilsynet" twice, which in practice hold the same position as our government on monetary decisions and they waited for the EU to rule on Bitcoin.
Any info on what EU is expected to rule or any time line on them ruling?

Here, the minister says that you do not need to follow money laundering regulations if you buy and sell bitcoins! But he also adds that facilitating money laundering is illegal. But that a trader does not have to live up to some bureaucratic money laundering statements is pretty significant. And the guy asking the question (from FrP), unerstands the implications of bitcoins.

Quote from: Ketil Solvik-Olsen (FrP)
Hvordan vurderer regjeringen inntreden av digitale valutaers konsekvenser for skatteinnkreving, kriminalitetsbekjempelse og økonomisk styring?
Translated: What consequences does the [Norwegian] government think that digital currencies will have for taxation, crime enforcement, and [political] economic control? (sic!)

The finance minister answers that bitcoins will only become a serious competitor in places where the local (government fiat) currency is destroyed through money printing.

293  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: What is the safest way to import paper wallets? on: April 22, 2013, 02:58:18 PM
Dear fellow BTC users

I have some BTCs lying around on paper wallets. These private addresses have never touched a computer that has touched the internet - totally cold wallets. When I want to transfer them to, say, another cold wallet, how would I proceed to do that in the safest possible way consistent with the safety steps I have already taken?

I would also like to know what the safest way to import wallet.dat files which also have never been in contact with the Internet. I made one of those back when I was a Bitcoin noob which I probably still am to some degree.

Hoping for your help guys!

Regards,
Sword Smith
FYI, I ended up installing Armory on an offline (cold) computer and then I imported the private keys into Armory. When you send money from this wallet through an offline transaction, you have to be careful not to delete the Armory wallet into which you imported your private keys before you are 100 % sure that there are no funds left on the addresses contained in this Armory wallet (no, I did not loose any BTCs but I was a bit surprised at how it worked when I only transferred a part of the money sotred on my cold wallet).

Regarding the wallet.dat file, I said a Hail Mary and imported onto an online computer with bitcoin-qt installed since Armory seemed to be unable to support the importation of wallet.dat files - it seems Armory can only import its own kind of wallet files (and private keys) which is a place where improvements can and should be made. After importing the file to my online computer, I sent it to another cold wallet but now I feel confident that I know how to deal with cold wallets.

I can really recommend installing Armory! it is a great program which is easy to use and it has a ton of nice functions, the most important one being the possibilities of importing private keys easily and making offline transactions where you sign your transaction on an offline computer. Install Armory today!

Someone just bought 1 million USD worth of BTC. And another guy sold half million USD worth of BTC. Insane.

That 21M
USD sitting on Gox isn't there to be intimidating.  It's working capital, on a hair-trigger.
How do you know that USD 21m are sitting on mtgox?

Well there's more than that. 21m is the total bid sum on the order books. Which you can view on http://blockchained.com

Ahh.  Thanks.

And I note that since Gox changed their rules about placing orders without actually having the funds in your account (you can't do that any more - so the money is really there), that's even more impressive.
Is it? The total volume of one weekday's trading is around USD 20m.

How do you see that someone just sold for ½m $?

See my edit above.
I did see the buy and the wall that just dissapeared but are you saying that a new one came up after the first one had dissapeared?
