Some kind of desktop app that doubles as a decentralised exchange not controlled by anyone, that is the way to go

OpenTransactions does that.  The decentralized server side software completes the transactions you implement on your desktop software. Watch the videos for more information:

Don't "trust" any centralized service.  They all have the potential to run away with your money or get hacked.

And it is not Satoshi's vision....

Decentralized services/exchanges are coming.
Okay then, trust me. I'm a bot made out of servers. Each operating with their own 'mind'.

Then you are clueless.  Bitcoins run on p2p servers and they run just fine......

Satoshi said to not trust third party players in a two party transaction.  That's why bitcoin was developed.  A centralized exchange brings back the "3rd untrusted" party back to the table.  Once we see decentralized exchanges then the system will be back in check.

Well i will love to see that happen cuz after gox i don't trust any exchange anymore i know its unfair to say  for the ones running legit but i guess its what most of us have in our mind !
Trust Bitstamp.

Is it possible to create a decentralized way of buying and selling Bitcoins,
Like a program that can be installed on any computer and function like MtGox.

No.

Because ...

FIAT money is a BANK system !
Mastercard/visa ... wire, SEPA, etcs !

Yes it is possible....

Several are being developed right now.  They will use payment gateways to get fiat ( or any other asset) in and out of the system.  Some of the projects that are working on it in one form or another are:

Buttercoin (not sure if they are still working on decentralized)
OpenTransactions
Ripple
Ethereum
Invictus (bitshares)
Counterparty

I realize some on the list also will do other services, but they are all steps in the right direction.  We are not too far away from seeing decentralized exchanges and other services.

Interesting news.  Curious on how fast they will be rolling all these new services.

Fast forward 10 years.  Bitcoin has boomed.  Nordstrom checkout lines are filled with QR and Google glassholes.  "That will be .00007452 bitcoin please"

How does the average Joe comprehend this value?  I mean most people struggle with two decimal transactions.

Fast forward 15 years.

Cashier:  What is a dollar?  What are cents?  We only take bitcoins sir!

Bitcoin is no different then transacting in gold if gold had become the defacto standard currency.  "That will be 2,030 grams sir."  Any currency that is adopted will become common place.  Hell....I don't know what a peso or yuan or a yen is worth.  But I can convert it OR I can LEARN it.

Probably just his way of getting more hits to his site.  Mention "bitcoin" and all the search engines will point to you.

It has been reported that 850,000 bitcoins were lost.

Just vanished into thin air.

They didn't vanish into thin air, someone likely has them.  We just don't know who.

Lose the key to the wallet/address and they have for all purposes "vanished".

have you seen this new coin looks neat https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=483515.0
It may looks neat, but this damn thing will be all the talk about the next few weeks. Number 4 on coinmarketcap at moment. It is the fairest distribution so far.
Don't you just love how this thread has turned into a venue for everybody to post advertisements about their new doge mining pool?   Post after post of useless advertisements for new pools.

Put them all on 'ignore'.
It has taken a few weeks, but eventually you'll stop seeing them constantly.

Kinda wish they had their own subforum where they could post the pool and if they spam the threads then account would get deleted.

But is wishes were...

Just ignored about 50 of them.....does clean it up a bit!  Smiley

That`s the federal reserve, not the government.

Funny how some people think the federal reserve is a government agency!
393  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do you pay a specific $ if you aren't holding Bitcoin on: February 27, 2014, 12:43:53 AM
Sometimes you will find competitive listings on localbitcoins.com where you deposit the money at someone's bank and they send the coins to you within an hour.  I have seen listings for as low as a few points over stamps buy prices.  May be worth a look but it just depends on your area/market.

There's something collapsing here, but it sure isn't Bitcoin:

Oh really!?  Looks like BTC is going for about $600 each in my neck of the woods.

What a bunch a FUD.
397  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can a laptop / data be recovered with only serial number (BTC DATA) on: February 26, 2014, 12:18:28 AM
Since you questions has nothing to do with bitcoins, why don't you find a Mac forum to ask your question?  You'll probably get some more accurate answers.
398  Other / Off-topic / Re: Have you guys seen these crazy climbers? on: February 24, 2014, 12:39:47 AM
that's nothing man, I'v seen a yt video of a guy climbing the 2nd tallest building in the world Cheesy
Shangai Towers motherfucker Cheesy

it's bloody awesome Cheesy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLDYtH1RH-U

No kidding....did you read the thread?

On another note....

Alex Honnold says climbing buildings/cranes is EASY.  Buildings are just the same repetitive motion all the way up.  Rock climbing is a new challenge every foot you climb.

(Source Joe Rogan interview)

I don't think anything is as scary or challenging as what Alex has accomplished.  Hell,  no one has even tried what he does. (I know there are other solo climbers but they haven't done the routes Alex has tackled) The guy is on another playing field.
399  Other / Off-topic / Re: Have you guys seen these crazy climbers? on: February 22, 2014, 02:42:22 AM
Can't see the video in my country, any alternative link?

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=fa5_1357857447 - WOW. Google Crane hanging for more sick videos like this one.

Looks like the same video the OP posted.

Interesting....

Wonder if the community will except this new index as the "defacto" over other pricing sites.  Also curious why they felt the need to create a new pricing index.
