41  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Need Advice Securing Bitcoin Core Wallet Any Tips? on: April 15, 2024, 09:45:56 AM
I chose it because of the security and autonomy it offers. And I have direct access to the entire blockchain if I running a full node with Bitcoin Core And I have full control over my funds. While lite wallets like Electrum offer convenience but I prioritize security.

Be aware that while running a full node via Bitcoin Core is commendable, it might not give the kind of security you are looking for.

Running full nodes versus just using a SPV wallet like Electrum is important for network health and more secure in the sense that your own node verifies transactions rather than relying on a third party to do it for you.

However for most people that is not how you get your coins stolen. What you are looking for is a way to protect your private keys. And for that you either need to set up cold storage, as mentioned by LoyceV, or a hardware wallet. While for the latter there have been various concerning developments I'd argue that they are still preferable over just keeping your coins in a hot wallet like the standard Bitcoin core setup.

Note that simply encrypting your wallet as suggested by promise444c5 will not protect your coins in case of a compromised machine. Even something as simple as a keylogger will completely break this "security" model.

42  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: solve key 66 67 Puzzle how to avoid double spends the tx? on: April 13, 2024, 08:18:50 AM
I don't really follow the Bitcoin Puzzle scene, but assuming the public keys for these particular puzzles are indeed within a range that could be derived within seconds, digaran already answered the question following the post you were linking:

you'd need to either have a bot that automatically double spends the tx or talk with a large mining pool to privately include your tx in a block

Though even that will not guarantee success if your adversary is able to broadcast their transaction at the roughly the same time (i.e. within seconds) as you: (1) They may attempt multiple double spends so now it just becomes a competition of who spams the network most effectively and (2) the mining pool you are colluding with may not be the one actually find the next block. Nonetheless following either approach would increase your chances over just hitting send and hoping for the best (though as mentioned above I can not asses the risk of getting looted for those particular puzzles).
43  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: In what currency other than the USD you know the price of Bitcoin by heart? on: April 12, 2024, 04:46:34 PM
1 BTC = 1 Tesla Model X  Grin
Double-checking this only seems to apply for the US market though.

So, USD again, lol!  Grin Cause the price of a Tesla S looked like this:

Actually I checked against the European prices first only to realize how much more expensive they are over here.

Actually actually I don't even care that much about Teslas, it's just that a couple weeks ago I've heard the price mentioned somewhere and immediately thought "huh, so 1 Bitcoin" Wink Definitely wouldn't have remembered it without such a straightforward "exchange rate" though.
44  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Debunking the Myth of Bitcoin's Use Case on: April 12, 2024, 02:45:28 PM
LOL
you are just playing with words because you want to prove your wrong view of Bitcoin's usages. It's like arguing that we are not currently "communicating" with each other because this is in text form and without "voice" Cheesy

No my dude, each time anyone gets paid in bitcoin, uses bitcoin to purchase something, and even when they invest in bitcoin they are using bitcoin. That is the definition of use cases of money. You use it as a medium of exchange and you use it for store of value.

I'd actually even be fine with OP arguing semantics, if their arguments would be internally consistent. But as soon as the argument gets extended to fiat currencies these are miraculously exempted from their particular definition of "use" by some handwavy reference to government backing. It's almost as if their whole argument is not actually... useful.

The real remaining question that got me curious is what is your goal?

YouTube views, presumably.
45  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: In what currency other than the USD you know the price of Bitcoin by heart? on: April 12, 2024, 02:30:02 PM
So if obviously everyone is still even around here pricing everything in USD, at least in private, do you know the price of one BTC in any other currency than the USD and your own?

1 BTC = 1 Tesla Model X  Grin

Double-checking this only seems to apply for the US market though. Also cars arguably don't count as currency.

I roughly know the BTC prices of various digital services, but these are super blurry because they keep changing all the time due to being USD and EUR-denominated so they are hard to remember.

So by that definition, money is useless, right? So, do you want to Venmo me, or go via PayPal...? Smiley
No, because money such as the dollar, besides being traded on the market, can also be used for returning it to its issuers - banks for satisfying loan or bond debt that was created by putting the dollar on the market.

By your definition returning it to its issuers for satisfying a loan or bond debt is only "trade" though, and not "use".

You are not "using" the dollar for anything. You are "trading" it for something you bought in the past.
48  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Debunking the Myth of Bitcoin's Use Case on: April 11, 2024, 09:35:00 AM
Exactly. That what you call 'use' is actually 'trade'. You just transfered the coin to another buyer or you were the buyer to whome the coin was transferred. None of you were 'using' the coin but just trade it. Whoever buys the coin is forced to sell it - to dump it on someone else, exactly because the coin cannot be used for anything. It's completely useless. That's the whole point demonstrated by the video.

So by that definition, money is useless, right? So, do you want to Venmo me, or go via PayPal...? Smiley
49  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Has Bitcoin been inflitrated by global elite? on: April 11, 2024, 09:26:43 AM
Between chain analytics companies, BlackRock, Saylor, centralized exchanges/government approval, demonizing/de-listing of privacy coins & wallets....etc, one has to wonder...has Bitcoin been infiltrated by global elite?

The way I see it it's the other way round, ie. Bitcoin having infiltrated the global elite. Though that is, imo, too monolithic a term, which is why we are seeing regulation and demonization at the other end of the spectrum, ie. pushback by the parts of the owning and governing class that have not yet aligned their interests with Bitcoin.

I do agree that the slow descend towards further and further centralization is a concerning one (ie. the step from cex to etfs) but to be honest in that case it's on us to steward and promote self-custody over complacency.

56  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Apple chip flaw allows access to private keys on: March 23, 2024, 08:54:04 AM
Is there a similar flaw in Intel processors and others that have not yet been discovered?

There's a very similar flaw that was discovered in Intel, AMD, ARM-based, and IBM processors a couple years ago:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectre_(security_vulnerability)

It's weird that this isn't mentioned in the article because it was a rather big thing back then and apart from implementation details the exploit seems to work pretty much the same (at least at a first glance, I might be missing something).

Wäre aber - wie so viel in diesem Run - eine erstmalige Sache, dass das neue ATH so schnell nach dem Halving erreicht wurde.

58  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: TREZOR WALLET Question about possible security risk on: March 21, 2024, 03:15:14 PM
How do i know a pop up on my screen is a genuine update? and who says its not a hacker pretending to provide a genuine update 2.7.0 say it was a hacker could they take my coins from me entering the password ?

The seed words never leave the device, so a hacker would not be able to steal your coins with just your password.

I would assume malware if the update were to ask for the seed words as well. AFAIK the only situation where Trezor Suite would ask for the seed words would be during wallet recovery. However even during that process you have the option to enter the seed words using your hardware wallet, bypassing any potential malware on your computer.
59  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: EU Parliament Approves New Sanctions Laws That Also Apply to Crypto on: March 19, 2024, 09:37:22 AM
In general two things are happening in crypto market.

Firstly big corporate with deep pocket are launching Bitcoin exchange traded fund and buying thousands and thousands of Bitcoins. Secondly governments are tightening up the regulatory legislations that can be used against common crypto to users like you and I.

Bitcoin is slowly but surely becoming centralised. Not a great progress to cheer about.

Definitely something to be wary about. What we are looking at is the beginnings of what might be a sort of regulatory capture of cryptocurrencies.

If ETFs become the most common way to invest in cryptocurrencies it becomes easier for governments to regulate the underlying digital assets to death. That is, they can give investors the illusion of choice while slowly smothering the more subversive aspects of cryptocurrencies. Because if you want to profit from crypto you could just invest in an ETF now and every other usage would surely only be for nefarious purposes.
60  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Radical New Discovery Could Double The Speed of Existing Computers on: March 17, 2024, 08:42:52 AM
ASICs are hundreds and probably thousands of times faster than GPUs. A speed increase of 2x thanks to SHMT won't make much of a difference.

Try millions Smiley

The first generation of ASICs put Bitcoin miners from MH into GH territory. Current miners deal in the hundreds of TH. We've come a long way.

It's also going to be interesting to see if SHMT could have a negative impact on the lifespan of computer hardware. Perhaps the increase in speed also shortens the life of the chips.

Probably not, as this is more about using the existing CPU/GPU (and eventually TPU) cycles more effectively, rather than increasing the speeds at which the chips operate (see the article posted by ymgve2).
