1  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: Today at 06:55:01 PM
Bitcoin has this funny property that few understand:

Short-term chaos.
Long-term order.

Fact: when averaged over any 4-year period in Bitcoin's history, price has always been increasing. Any 4-year period! This actually describes the 200-Week Moving Average indicator. It's a beautiful thing. Look at it. Never dropped. Always rising. Mathematicians call it monotonically increasing. It's always been like this. Will it change any time soon? I don't think so.

So, sit back, relax, have a ramen, watch a flick. Next morning you'll be richer, guaranteed. No need to look at the charts.

It really cannot get any better than this.

Not much happening.
Temporary abstinence.
Makes for better sex!

When under the knife,
Be careful what you reveal,
To naughty nurses!

Two hundred of what?
Tarders use days, hours or less,
While HoDLers use weeks!

Counting starts at naught,
Whether you like it or not!
It's a 'puter thing.

Happy for ivomm.
Bitcoin made his dreams come true.
Beach house and yacht next!

Sieg Heil, UK law,
As one of their own foretold!
George Orwell's the name.

Keep HoDLing, brothers.
Laws and governments can try,
But they'll never win!

Epoch 1 was 50 BTC per block, epoch 2 was 25, epoch 3 was 12.5, etc.

How did epoch 4 skip down to 3.125? What happened to 6.25?

Silly humans Epoch 0 was 50BTC

Nonsense. It's like centuries.

Years 1 to 999 were the 1st century. Years 2000 to 2024 (so far) is the 21st century.

There was no zeroth century.

About Epoch 0 being the first one, it's a computer programming thing. Array indexing in C++ always starts at zero, so array[0] is a valid element, equivalent to all others. Of course, a programmer can take care of this, for aesthetic reasons, and shift things by 1 to make the counter more human-friendly, but the Bitcoin code is meant to be very lean and pure, as it should be, so everything is written in vanilla C++ code.

Damn, looks like we're poor again.

This grindingly slow oscillation around $6x000 is killing me.

Not that I care so much, since I know (and we all know) what will happen soonTM.

It's just the 6-digit anticipation that's keeping me (kind of) on alert.

Back to RL, back to wait mode.

...

One article for JJG and anyone else interested in 200 day moving averages:

https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2024/04/23/bitcoins-200-day-average-is-approaching-a-record-high-heres-why-it-matters/?_gl=1*1l849lo*_up*MQ..*_ga*NjA4ODI3ODUuMTcxMzkwMjgwNg..*_ga_VM3STRYVN8*MTcxMzkwMjgwNS4xLjAuMTcxMzkwMjgwNS4wLjAuMTAxNjQ0Nzk4Mg..

he is into 200week MA...js
200day is a classic, sure.

I didn't spot the error until I read the beginning of the article that said "Bitcoin's 200-day average is on track to challenge its previous peak of $49,452 from February 2022."

Currently, the 200-Week MA stands at the ultra-conservative value of $33,630 and creeping up VEEERY SLOWLY (currently around $40 per day), as it always has done. Note that it has always been moving upwards, and never downwards, which is a great long-term indicator of where Bitcoin price is going...

Halving came and went.
"Where's the pump?" I hear some ask.
"Sell now!" I reply.

Other fools believe,
That their stash was cut in half.
German ignorance!

Rabbits eat tulips.
Homer sprays urine perfume.
Coyotes get horny.

Muslims fighting Jews.
That's humans fighting humans,
While "gods" watch and laugh...

Raining in Dubai.
Sunshine in Antarctica.
"How dare you?" she cries!

Bitcoin dumped so hard...
Dude eating "Basic Fine Food"...
Arrie would be proud!

Phil survived the knife.
Will ChartBuddy survive too?
Rich soon, boys and girls!

Happy Halving 2024 to all WOers!

Been catching up with last two days' posts. Looks like there was a party in these here parts -- missed it due to RL keeping me busy...

Funny how all those live GIFs now show 1458 days left...

Now it's wait time... Don't you dare sell a sat until at least ATH.

We're all blessed. Thank you Satoshi!

What will be the most accurate halving time  Cool

Very difficult to predict at minute-level (let alone at second-level).

This is due to the nature of the code, and its interaction with millions of miners worldwide. This introduces stochastic elements (randomness) into the process, thus making it virtually impossible to accurately predict the time of the halvings.

Here's an article by CoinDesk explaining why it's so difficult to predict:

CoinDesk — Why Bitcoin Halving Calculators Are Out of Sync

Here are 6 halving timestamp estimates, from various places on the net (sources not important to mention):

Saturday, 20 April 2024, 03:26:00 UTC
Saturday, 20 April 2024, 05:11:11 UTC
Saturday, 20 April 2024, 06:26:00 GMT+3
Saturday, 20 April 2024, 05:12:00 GMT+3
Saturday, 20 April 2024, 05:03:00 CET
Saturday, 20 April 2024, 01:22:50 UTC

Based on the above, I guess we should be expecting it sometime...

[UK/Europe] In the early hours of Saturday, 20 April 2024.
[USA] In the late hours of Friday, 19 April 2024.

O/T

Was just out walking the dog and took a snap of Lara Croft emerging from the park lake, taking a morning swim.

I asked why she was swimming with her boots on and she told me to shut the hell up,
mind my own business and to keep walking my damn dog.

 Huh

Right hand knuckle count: 6.
Left hand knuckle count: uncountable.

Not human. Probably LarAI Croft.

Not to worry though. Halving is imminent. In a few months, the real ones will be begging to be your little puppy.

Currently RL situation
Sitting with my dog and he’s not happy with merits, this is another kind of sharing situation I’m in atm

*was just reading
The walking the dog post Smiley

Not the usual Dude luxury resto post. More like Arrie's shopping mall dinners. Is it because of the price drop?

Drink matches hat though. Cheesy

Bitcoin Halving 2024: How It's Different This Time, Myths Debunked, Bitcoin Bugs, and More — by Andreas Antonopoulos

Highly recommended watch — for both newbies and experienced coiners. It's a breath of fresh air to watch someone who really knows his stuff talk about the upcoming Bitcoin halving.

Thanks, Andreas, for helping me understand Bitcoin and making me buy my first coin back in 2015.

This guy is superb just Saylor. Have to watch this video with play back speed of 0.75 to understand what he is saying about Halving.
I am not an expert so following points were informative for me.

  • Halving happens after every 210k blocks.
  • Bitcoin doesn't exists as unit of measurement, in system the unit of measurement is Satoshis. One Bitcoin is 100 million Satoshis.

Yes, he probably speaks a little too fast for some viewers, but it's one of the few videos (if not the only one) I've come across, that actually has something useful to say about the halving.

It's also interesting to learn about little things, such as the actual computation of the updated (halved) reward, which is not done by simply dividing the current amount by two, but by shifting the current amount to the right by 1 bit, thus effectively dividing by two and rounding off any resulting satoshi fractions (which cannot exist). Also good to be aware of the little bugs in the Bitcoin code, such as the "off-by-one error" that effectively causes the difficulty to adjust to be slightly faster every retargeting period.

Lots of little gems -- densely packed knowledge, and no-nonsense, to-the-point analysis of how the halving can affect price in the coming weeks/months/years.

ATH attempt.
Nearly 73k.
And then poor again...

Infinite torture.
ChartBuddy posts everywhere!
Where the fuck is Phil?

No restrictions here,
Except two forbidden words:
"Crypto" and "trading"!

China buys Bitcoin?
Last time I heard, they banned it!
Is Hong Kong Chinese?

Moon covered the sun.
And for all those who missed it,
Just look at my hat!

In danger or doubt?
Run in circles, scream and shout.
And sell your coins, too!

5 days to Halving.
Last chance to buy cheap Bitcoin...

I was thinking about the following hypothetical the other day:

Let's assume that bitcoin goes to 100-300K (let's say, 200K average) this cycle and somewhere along the line you sell a substantial % to invest in property, luxuries, etc ( whichever you choose).
In 10 years afterwards, bitcoin goes to 5 mil, which means that you only "captured" just 4% of potential value.

How would you feel about it? I guess, it would also depend on the remainder (that you didn't sell), but still.

Personally, I know that years later, I am not particularly fond of my decisions to sell AMZN, AAPL and TSLA early, even though I made very nice gains on them.
Sometimes, I consider these occurancies as my investment follies, but, again, you cannot be 100% efficient.

Of course, it is possible to NEVER sell btc and, basically, put this decision on the shoulders of descendants, but you cannot guarantee that they would be wise about it, right?
At least, I can't.

At some point, I would have to start to spend btc and this point is coming relatively soon.
Alas, to spend even a relatively small amount of btc on things like kitchen remodeling causes a bit of mixed feelings on my part as I contemplate the scenarios described above.
That could be one expensive kitchen 5-10 years down the road.
Withdrawals from IRA are taxable and I put all my stables back into the market during 2023.
I would probably do a mix of "things", but don't want to take on HELOC or anything like this.
Decisions, decisions...

Didn’t read the whole post in bed but quick response

Don’t mind selling something to live life

If spend 5-10% and in then years or 5 or 2 reaching 1-2-3-4-5 whatever mil a coin
Then 90% of the remaining or 80-70-60 …. Will provide well

This is the way I see it too.

It makes no sense to never sell any of your Bitcoin.

What I do is sell relatively small and very specific amounts, only when necessary, to buy specific things. Never bulk sells to keep large amounts of fiat in the bank.

The great thing about Bitcoin is that the growth rate of the remaining coins always exceeds the amount lost because of the sells. So, wealth-wise, my stash still keeps growing, while I enjoy the benefits.

It's a win-win situation. Simple, proven, effective, repeatable. What more could one ask for?

Who are these people who are selling this to me?

[11 days before the halving]

I just pity them.

— Michael Saylor
