If you're talking about something like DirecTV - those are geostationary satellites so your dish won't be pointing up unless you live on the equator.

Non-geostationary satellites can work in groups (constellations) to provide uninterrupted signal.

And yes, satellites do malfunction, get replaced, etc. Does your phone lose signal every time technicians do maintenance on cell towers?
