If this is how the idea of Bitcoin gets exposed to the world, through a negative event, then Bitcoins will be seen as a bad thing for many people and governments.

And it would open it up to further condemning and denouncing attacks by politicians.

no.  it'll be interpreted as a huge positive.  it's been made loud and clear that Bitcoins are valued.  it's an efficient, highly desired fixed supply currency that can be sent or received w/o being present in person.  try that with gold or USD's.

no.  it'll be interpreted as a huge positive.  it's been made loud and clear that Bitcoins are valued.  it's an efficient, highly desired fixed supply currency that can be sent or received w/o being present in person.  try that with gold or USD's.

For its longer term success, I'd prefer it if a beneficial event did the introduction of Bitcoin to the world.

No it's not. The worst thing that can happen is a neutral effect should it turn out to be a hoax. That kind of association doesn't damage bitcoins reputation since it is not related to it's infrastructure.
I wouldn't be surprised if we hit all time highs next month, and I think everybody here agrees I am one of the most resilient bears in here.
