Not thousands of overdosed drug users. In Russian alone, Afghan heroin has killed around 2,000,000 people in the last 15 years (mostly in the 15-25 age group). In Iran also, hundreds of thousands have lost their lives. Similar are the figures in countries such as Ukraine, Moldova and Azerbaijan. This is one of the most successful CIA operations to date, having exterminated the entire generation of young people in Russia and Iran. But we should not blame the Afghan farmers either. They receive only around $100 per year, as profits from this business. The remaining profits are pocketed by the middlemen. If there are 100,000 Afghan farmers cultivating opium poppy, an allowance of $100 per head is enough to stop the practice. Comes to $10 million per year. But it will never happen, as the NATO is forcing the farmers to cultivate poppy, instead of the preferred crops such as barley or wheat. |

I know a couple people who have died from heroin OD's and several more who's lives have been ruined by their addiction...
Most of the world's H is supplied from Afghanistan...

Some government officials are making a serious killing off those opium fields.

Who's life did he ruin selling drugs? the only drugs I've heard of him selling is some magic mushrooms in the early stages of silk road, he has his life ruined, yes you are correct there but he didn't ruin anyone Else's life, the people who bought and sold drugs on the site that lead to 6 confirmed deaths did that, all the guy did was make a website, a website that will cost him the rest of his life |

No it's not looking good for heroin addicts in the West, I remember watching a speech from the ex UK ambassador to Uzbekistan (think it was on the Real News Network) and he reported see dozens of US military trucks fully loaded with opium. Kind of flies in the face of the official War on Drugs.

Court Sometimes need strong acceptable evidence which court can't deny properly. I think Mr Ross Ulbricht couldn't submitted to court for his innocence. I m very much appreciate what he did for people which is really great appreciation deserve for... bur Mr Ross also a human who can do mistake which absolutely possible to by unexpected even. But I think he suppose to appeal higher court then where he got life sentenced. Anyway my best wishes he will release by his great work which is he did for normal people and he really deserve free of life....

I thought the U.S. didn't believe in torture? If they decided that they never wanted him to be in society again for the rest of his life then the death penalty is the humane action. Spending 50 years trapped in a box until you're insane is cruel and inhumane. If he was a dog and you locked it in a box for a year and got caught you'd be punished. Do people have less value than a dog to the U.S. Government?

Actual real OS / software thats free = Linux and its retail market share is small. |

Anti-competitive practices by rent-seeking billion dollar transnationals and hardcore corruption are the name of the game for modern capitalism. Democracy languishes. The Russian sources have always claimed that besides helping the poppy cultivators in Afghanistan (by providing equipment, fertilizer and pesticide), the NATO also helps the smugglers to transport the opium across the international borders. They transport the opium either North-ward (through Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, to Russia), or West-ward (to Iran and Azerbaijan). |

The reason for the (dropped) murder charge was to get Ross in the news as a drug king-pin who had people killed, and to associate cartel level drug trafficking / murder with silkroad in the minds of the public, so that when he eventually got the harshest sentence possible (natural life without possibility of parole) there would be no resistance from the public. This is not about justice, it's the state abusing its power to make a terrifying example which should frighten others who might think to do the same. Turns out the agents involved in bringing down the Silk Road were actually involved in more criminal activity than DPR himself, but that is ignored - the law is allowed to break the law in order to serve the law. When those who are charged to uphold the law themselves behave as if they are above the law, then you know there is no real justice to be had.  Just shovel the bullshit under the carpet along with the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. I wait patiently for the day americans grow a pair and decide to finally hold our government accountable for the travesty they've let this nation become. Bear in mind that when feudal merchants turned against their masters all across Europe some four hundred years ago, they were defying the law, the King, the nobility, and the will of God by Divine Right. They faced the violence of those entrenched institutions head on at a time when torture was socially tolerable, and they did so without the great force equalizer we call the gun. The merchants won, the nobles and kings lost, and capitalism was born. Today the military and police are comprised almost entirely of common folk. We need only win their hearts and minds, and turn them against the corrupt uber-rich who are robbing everyone else blind. The Jamie Dimons, Sepp Blatters, and Michael Bloombergs of this world. Ross certainly wasn't an expert on bitcoin tech. In fact, wasn't that one of the things he sought help with on these forums in trying to hire people to help him with the integration of bitcoin? I don't doubt his intelligence but I don't think he was an expert in bitcoin and certainly not one that could have gone on to improve on bitcoin in any significant way. Besides, whether we like it or not Ross has done his part for bitcoin and Silk Road will always be a milestone in helping it get to where it was today.
