Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

IF they destroyed the crops they would take away the farmers livelihoods, which is something they didn't want to do. Is opium even illegal in Afghanistan? Also don't forget that Morphine and Codeine also come from those poppies.

Hey bud, you need serious reality check.

A reality check on what exactly? Care to elaborate?

LOL I was thinking the same thing.

You want a couple of farmers to survive at the expense of thousands of overdosed drug users worldwide! ROFL

No, but the US gov does: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/21/world/asia/21marja.html?_r=0

Quote
From Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal on down, the military’s position is clear: “U.S. forces no longer eradicate,” as one NATO official put it. Opium is the main livelihood of 60 to 70 percent of the farmers in Marja, which was seized from Taliban rebels in a major offensive last month.

Maybe you should actually know what you're talking about. It's also a lot more than 'a couple of farmers'. Try 200,000. And the US doesn't care about the millions that OD from prescription pills or alcohol so why is a few thousand dying from heroin such a big problem? It's also none of the US business what Afghan farmers do.

Not thousands of overdosed drug users. In Russian alone, Afghan heroin has killed around 2,000,000 people in the last 15 years (mostly in the 15-25 age group). In Iran also, hundreds of thousands have lost their lives. Similar are the figures in countries such as Ukraine, Moldova and Azerbaijan. This is one of the most successful CIA operations to date, having exterminated the entire generation of young people in Russia and Iran.

But we should not blame the Afghan farmers either. They receive only around $100 per year, as profits from this business. The remaining profits are pocketed by the middlemen. If there are 100,000 Afghan farmers cultivating opium poppy, an allowance of $100 per head is enough to stop the practice. Comes to $10 million per year. But it will never happen, as the NATO is forcing the farmers to cultivate poppy, instead of the preferred crops such as barley or wheat.

I know a couple people who have died from heroin OD's and several more who's lives have been ruined by their addiction...

Most of the world's H is supplied from Afghanistan...

Thanks a lot America .....................

Some government officials are making a serious killing off those opium fields.

Finally, the wrong deeds were given the right punishment as such a guy who ruined lives of people selling drugs, has his own life ruined forever now...
Who's life did he ruin selling drugs? the only drugs I've heard of him selling is some magic mushrooms in the early stages of silk road, he has his life ruined, yes you are correct there but he didn't ruin anyone Else's life, the people who bought and sold drugs on the site that lead to 6 confirmed deaths did that, all the guy did was make a website, a website that will cost him the rest of his life

No it's not looking good for heroin addicts in the West, I remember watching a speech from the ex UK ambassador to Uzbekistan (think it was on the Real News Network) and he reported see dozens of US military trucks fully loaded with opium. Kind of flies in the face of the official War on Drugs.

Court Sometimes need strong acceptable evidence which court can't deny properly. I think Mr Ross Ulbricht couldn't submitted to court for his innocence. I m very much appreciate what he did for people which is really great appreciation deserve for... bur Mr Ross also a human who can do mistake which absolutely possible to by unexpected even. But I think he suppose to appeal higher court then where he got life sentenced. Anyway my best wishes he will release by his great work which is he did for normal people and he really deserve free of life....

Wrong. Karma isn't real, the world is not a just place, and your government is not your friend. You are demonstrating Just World Fallacy, the belief that those who win the game of life earned it, and those who lose deserve it. It's moronic and it needs to die like all other myths and superstitions.

I couldn't disagree more.

Even if you don't believe in "karma" as described in classic spiritual texts,
you should believe in basic causality... and that honesty and effort
generally bring more success and happiness to the average person than
sloth and unreliability.

That being said, yes live in a somewhat upside down world where the
most corrupt people rise to the top of power, but that is another story.

I thought the U.S. didn't believe in torture? If they decided that they never wanted him to be in society again for the rest of his life then the death penalty is the humane action. Spending 50 years trapped in a box until you're insane is cruel and inhumane. If he was a dog and you locked it in a box for a year and got caught you'd be punished. Do people have less value than a dog to the U.S. Government?

graft, cunning and dishonesty brings rewards these days. Hard work brings student debt and job insecurity at best.

If you work hard an well in  your job, your boss is likely to fire you anyway as you are likely a threat.

If you go self employed and don't cut corners in business you get priced out and shoddy jobs are done, passed off as good work.

The luminaries do what? Google = advertiser/info collector on you, yeah that really helps. Facebook = talk crap 80% of the time and advertiser. Microsoft, pump out bad OS year in year out. Actual real OS / software thats free = Linux and its retail market share is small.

I've been self employed for a decade, didn't "cut corners" and wasn't "priced out".  Maybe your experience tells you something different.

That's great, and useless information. Anecdotes are fun, but data paints the real picture. Anti-competitive practices by rent-seeking billion dollar transnationals and hardcore corruption are the name of the game for modern capitalism. Democracy languishes.

Justice is thoroughly anti-social and largely farcical. This system is well beyond reform.

The Russian sources have always claimed that besides helping the poppy cultivators in Afghanistan (by providing equipment, fertilizer and pesticide), the NATO also helps the smugglers to transport the opium across the international borders. They transport the opium either North-ward (through Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, to Russia), or West-ward (to Iran and Azerbaijan).

Read this on Reddit the other day. Pretty pity that he have left the outside world. He could have used his knowledge to improve Bitcoin if he did not start Silk Road.

So sad! This profile does not appear as the #1 result (on anonymous) Google searches anymore.

The reason for the (dropped) murder charge was to get Ross in the news as a drug king-pin who had people killed, and to associate cartel level drug trafficking / murder with silkroad in the minds of the public, so that when he eventually got the harshest sentence possible (natural life without possibility of parole) there would be no resistance from the public. This is not about justice, it's the state abusing its power to make a terrifying example which should frighten others who might think to do the same.

Turns out the agents involved in bringing down the Silk Road were actually involved in more criminal activity than DPR himself, but that is ignored - the law is allowed to break the law in order to serve the law.
When those who are charged to uphold the law themselves behave as if they are above the law, then you know there is no real justice to be had.

Just shovel the bullshit under the carpet along with the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. I wait patiently for the day americans grow a pair and decide to finally hold our government accountable for the travesty they've let this nation become. Bear in mind that when feudal merchants turned against their masters all across Europe some four hundred years ago, they were defying the law, the King, the nobility, and the will of God by Divine Right. They faced the violence of those entrenched institutions head on at a time when torture was socially tolerable, and they did so without the great force equalizer we call the gun. The merchants won, the nobles and kings lost, and capitalism was born. Today the military and police are comprised almost entirely of common folk. We need only win their hearts and minds, and turn them against the corrupt uber-rich who are robbing everyone else blind. The Jamie Dimons, Sepp Blatters, and Michael Bloombergs of this world. Our task is easy, folks.

We the common people have been attacking ourselves long enough. It's time once again to betray and devour our masters, and recreate society anew.

Read this on Reddit the other day. Pretty pity that he have left the outside world. He could have used his knowledge to improve Bitcoin if he did not start Silk Road.

Ross certainly wasn't an expert on bitcoin tech. In fact, wasn't that one of the things he sought help with on these forums in trying to hire people to help him with the integration of bitcoin? I don't doubt his intelligence but I don't think he was an expert in bitcoin and certainly not one that could have gone on to improve on bitcoin in any significant way. Besides, whether we like it or not Ross has done his part for bitcoin and Silk Road will always be a milestone in helping it get to where it was today.

Why would they need to do this? The public wouldn't care about him or how jumped up the charges were regardless of the murder for hire charge was true or not. As far as they would be concerned they arrested the internets biggest drug dealer and they wont care whether he gets 10-20-30-life.

Turns out the agents involved in bringing down the Silk Road were actually involved in more criminal activity than DPR himself, but that is ignored - the law is allowed to break the law in order to serve the law.

That's a bit of an exaggeration. They're corrupt cops and are going to be punished for being so so it's hardly being ignored.

I wait patiently for the day americans grow a pair and decide to finally hold our government accountable for the travesty they've let this nation become.

You're going to be waiting a long time. Nothing will ever change because of people's apathy. That's why progress can never be made.

To any government agents reading this, you best start praying to your blind gods for mercy now. Because the angry mob that shows up at your door isn't going to offer any, and Americans are nothing if not lovers of violence.

Lol. I'm sure they're shitting themselves.

You sure about that? Because even after the government's strategic defamation of Ross, the fourth most popular site on the internet seems to care about him a great deal. Imagine the rage if he hadn't been painted as a murderer.

They're corrupt cops and are going to be punished for being so so it's hardly being ignored.
