Perhaps someone can clue me into the controversy.
After reading all 18 pages (phew), what I have concluded so far is:
1) CoinWallet.eu is attempting to avoid legal ramifications of the 'stress test' by allowing users to claim btc from priv keys with thousands of unspent addresses 2) People are up in arms over this as its possibly limiting the function of the network 3) No proof has been provided that it actually IS limiting the network 4) Proof has been provided by several users that normal transactions are going through fine without delayed confirmations 5) Proof has been provided by several users that the 'spam' coinwallet.eu tx's are getting backlogged and creating a large UTXO (approx 100-160mb at time of writing) 6) This has not effected nodes ....yet
I see others have mentioned bc.i blocking the spam outputs, but....can anyone confirm that the other block explorers are more accurate outside of blocking these spam tx's ? If bc.i is doing a good job of filtering *just* the spam tx's, then their current active count of 9k unconfirmed tx's seems right in line with the normal transactional volume.
I am running a raspberry pi 2 which is currently at 30%cpu 20% mem avg reported by top. This is definitely a higher load than normal, but surprisingly this little buddy is handling it just fine.
I understand actions that could potentially put unbearable load on the network would be seen as negative, but frankly if the network cannot handle one single companies attack vector, then how could we possibly fight off a determined actor who wishes nothing but negative harm to the network? And more importantly, how can we progress forward to harden the network without staging exactly these types of 'attacks' so that we can test against them, determine the health and robustness of the network, and use that data to make cohesive decisions on how to move forward in anticipation of future 'attacks' ?

Those addresses are filled with 0.00001 BTC transactions. Only bitcoin core can handle loading the private keys, trying to get coins out needs to use coin control. Even with that, the size of transactions is unbearable so for most addresses it's not worth it to get big chunks of coins out because it would require a huge fee due to the size of the transaction.

Thanks for the tl;dr mate. Appears this is just another publicity stunt. Having been on these forums during the instawallet and inputs.io fiascos I am already pretty convinced that web wallets are 99% bunk anyway, and usually the providers don't have the userbase's best interests at heart.

It's not working. It's been 24 hours and I see no complaints on twitter from the usual Bitcoin devs nor do I see an uproar on Reddit about block delays. So if this is their entire plan then it's just an inconvenience. That said, this seems really well planned out so I don't think this is the entire gig. I think the encore is coming.

as i say they are scammers. They say that they have cancel spam attack but this spam attack is running just now https://blockchain.info/unconfirmed-transactions#oofree bitcoin promotion is part of their plan to stress the bitcoin network. They give some .5 bitcoin to lure people and after that i am sure that will give away hundreds of address with some satoshis. they only way to protect the people from them is to negative trust vote to their profile

I would pay zero attention to what you don't see here or on Reddit. lol The /r/bitcoin is one of the most censored subreddits ever created. I think one mod reported that over 50% of the posts and comments are deleted.

This will increase the amount of core nodes Ha, indeed. I guess it's actually a pretty interesting side-effect that could happen. Imagine if all of a sudden everyone cranks up a full node and then suddently the bitcoin network has a lot more bandwith. I guess as long as block sizes are limited you'll still have an issue getting the confirmatinos, but at least the network will be more robust!

Imagine that a billionaire throwing out $20 notes every second at the top of Empire State Building, it will immediately jam the traffic in whole Manhattan But that does not mean that you have to upgrade the road infrastructure of New York city because of this The stress test will prove that no matter how strong your infrastructure is, there is always a way to create chaos in the network, so the natural solution is to let the fee market develop, thus make the attack more and more expensive and become totally unfeasible Currently the optimum fee is not automatically calculated for each client, there should be a fee market price feed into major clients

Transactions average more than 1Kb each. Isn't that x4 the average?

If you want a detailed look at the spam (rather than trying to infer it from mempool sizes), then try TxMon: https://reqrypt.org/txmon.html (disclosure: txmon is my own project). Currently it reports: tx/s=2.93 bytes/s=13596.2(enabled via --verbose command-line option). Note that the 1MB limit supports ~1666.7 bytes/s, so we are currently about 8x capacity. I've seen it spike to ~100000 bytes/s, which even overwhelms 8MB blocks.

Actually I regard this as some kind of bitcoin faucet, not spam. Because you are still possible to construct valid transactions with decent fee, just each transaction is so huge that it stress the network heavily
A normal 1 input transaction is 220 bytes, but a 2000 input transaction will be 400KB, almost fill an average block. I think any transaction that combines more than 10 input should have significantly raised fee to discourage this kind of low value high frequency transaction
This test just showed that the blockchain is not suitable to do low value high frequency transaction, no matter how big the block size is
