OctoCoin Core 10.4

v0.10.4.0

Octocoin is back!

Left for dead, abandoned by it's original developers, and community.  Octocoin makes a return with a shiny new Qt wallet based on the latest Litecoin 0.10.x source tree.

Behold... Octocoin Core 10.4 (v0.10.4.0).

As always, before updating please make a backup of your `wallet.dat` file.  This version should be able to open any wallet.dat files created with the legacy Octocoin client, however once opened the `wallet.dat` file can no longer be opened in the legacy client.

Note: The pchMessageStart values were changed in v0.10.3.2.

SecurePayment CC - http://securepayment.cc has kindly offered to sponsor this release.
Please show your appreciation by mining at their pools (http://mining.securepayment.cc).

Download Octocoin Core

http://getoctocoin.com

Yes there are Mac OS X Wallets and Windows Installers, the whole thing, done right! I'm not just some guy who's copying and pasting code.  I spent the time and effort using my skill and knowledge to build a full quality release.  The wallets below were built using the Gitian build process, the same process used for Bitcoin releases.

Source code and release info: https://github.com/octocoin-project/octocoin/releases/tag/v0.10.4.0

The Github project can be found at:
https://github.com/octocoin-project/octocoin

Octocoin Foundation Website:
http://octocoinfoundation.org

If you are unable to connect to any peers please open the debug window go into the console tab, type in the following command and press enter.

Code:
addnode octocoin.securepayment.cc add

After a few minutes your client should start connecting to peers.

Blockchain Bootstrap

It's also possible to accelerate the initial blockchain download process by using a boostrap.dat file.  Download, extract and place the bootstrap.dat file in the AppData/Roaming/Octocoin or ~/.octocoin folder.

  • Blocks 2 through 7855 were rewarded 888 Octocoins (6,974,352 minted).
  • Blocks 7856 through 75887 were randomly rewarded either 888 or 88 Octocoins (between 5,986,904 and 60,413,304 minted).
  • Blocks 75888 through 94255 were rewarded at 188 Octocoin (3,452,996 minted).
  • Blocks 94256 through 180655 were rewarded 88 Octocoin (7,603,288 minted).

Block #180,656 to #2,330,840

  • Starting at block #180,656 the reward will be 80 Octocoins (28,669,120 minted in this period)
  • First halving will occur at block #539,019, the reward will be 40 Octocoins (14,334,560 minted in this period)
  • Second halving at block #897,383 the reward will be 20 Octocoins (7,167,280 minted in this period)
  • Third halving at block #1,255,747 the reward will be 10 Octocoins (3,583,640 minted in this period)
  • Fourth halving at block #1,614,111 the reward will be 5 Octocoins (1,791,820 minted in this period)
  • Fifth halving at block #1,972,475 the reward will be 2 Octocoins (716,728 minted in this period)
  • Sixth (and final) halving at block #2,330,839 the reward will be 1 Octocoins (358,364 minted in this period)
  • Ending at block #2,330,840 in approximately 6.5 years from now. (no more minted after this point)

* Octocoin was launched by the original developer with a pre-mine in the first block.  Supposedly all those coins have been distributed in bounties.
** Due to random block reward the actual number of minted Octocoin is estimated.

Known issues

It's very much possible that the words Bitcoin and Litecoin may still appear in the UI, logs, or console. If you happen to come across one of this mistakes please file an issue at Github.

Due to Octocoin's fluctuations in difficulty it's possible that new blocks may not be generated for more than 24 hours. As a result your clients may get stuck on "Octocoin is downloading blocks..." on startup. If your client is stuck in this state you won't be able to use the RPC mining functions even though you actually have the latest block. To work around it, first make sure you upgrade to Octocoin Core version 10.4, then pass the command line parameter:

Code:
-maxtipage=<n>

Where '<n>' is the value (in seconds) greater than 24 hours.  So you may use something like:

Code:
-maxtipage=432000

To specify 5 days (increase as needed).

You can also add that to your configuration file if needed:

Code:
maxtipage=432000

For history, the old Octocoin thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=504265

Can i withdraw from bittrex?

Octocoin is currently not traded at Bittrex (or anywhere else for that matter).  Bittrex once had an Octocoin market but it was closed down due to a vulnerability in the legacy wallet.

You'll have to notify them of the new wallet and see if they will now allow withdrawals.

There is a bounty for a website, and two other for anyone that can recover and transfer the old Octocoin domain.
For the time being we need to come up with a clever alternative to octocoin.org.

Any ideas?

Couple questions for OCTOcoin.... 1st with the octocoin.securepayment.cc mining way when do the blocks you mined finally show up in your wallet? Also for the life of me I can't figure out how to just straight solo mine this coin??? I've tried everything like this is what is in my conf file:
server=1
daemon=1
listen=1
gen=0
rpcallowip=127.0.0.1
rpcport=22888
rpcuser=user
rpcpassword=pass
addnode=octocoin.securepayment.cc
addnode=162.243.144.135
addnode=162.243.149.125
addnode=162.243.207.204

and then this is what my .bat file for cgminer 3.7.2 looks like:
setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1
cgminer.exe --scrypt -o http://localhost:22888 -u user -p pass --gridseed-options=baud=115200,freq=800,chips=5 --hotplug 10
but everytime I run the program to solo mine it keeps telling me that the url is incorrect or something but I've solo mined plenty of Scrypt coins and with the same .bat file pretty much everytime with of course changing the rpcport and user and password lol

If anyone has any idea what I am missing so that I can solo mine this coin without using the miningpool site that would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

With the octocoin.securepayment.cc mining way when do the blocks you mined finally show up in your wallet?

The few blocks I mined got paid about 1 day later.  You should ask them to clarify the payment schedule since I don't run that site.  Wink
http://mining.securepayment.cc/help.php

Also for the life of me I can't figure out how to just straight solo mine this coin???

Hmm... Try changing this:

Code:
rpcallowip=127.0.0.1

To, this:

Code:
rpcallowip=127.0.0.1/32

If that does not help, post debug.log.

I assume you are on Windows?  If so open a command prompt, type:

Code:
ping localhost

If it does not return 127.0.0.1, then change:

Code:
cgminer.exe --scrypt -o http://localhost:22888 -u user -p pass --gridseed-options=baud=115200,freq=800,chips=5 --hotplug 10

To

What should I do with my Octocoins in Bittrex ?

Please contact Bittrex support and let them know of the new wallet.

I encourage everyone else to to do the same.

Until I can get a domain, website, and block explorer up.  We will need to rely on https://www.blockexperts.com/888 as our blockchain.  Unfortunately it's been broken for more than 2 weeks and are unresponsive.  Please message them here:

With the octocoin.securepayment.cc mining way when do the blocks you mined finally show up in your wallet?

The few blocks I mined got paid about 1 day later.  You should ask them to clarify the payment schedule since I don't run that site.  Wink
http://mining.securepayment.cc/help.php

Also for the life of me I can't figure out how to just straight solo mine this coin???

Hmm... Try changing this:

Code:
rpcallowip=127.0.0.1

To, this:

Code:
rpcallowip=127.0.0.1/32
I don't know mate it keeps giving me the same thing saying pool 0 slow/ credentials or url wrong so I'll just keep mining at the pool lol

To

Code:
cgminer.exe --scrypt -o http://127.0.0.1:22888 -u user -p pass --gridseed-options=baud=115200,freq=800,chips=5 --hotplug 10
I've tried it both of those ways but I'm fine mining at the pool my rewards are starting to come in now so it's all good Smiley Thanks anyways for your help mate Cheesy

If is exactly what they told is that this Octocoin doesn't match with the old one, and i think that is strange if the dev wanted to revive the original one.....

So good to see people mining Octocoin steady and getting this coin back in action Cheesy That's always sweet when an old coin comes back and people start mining it again.  As for if this is a different Octocoin then what is the total coin supply for this OctoCoin?

OctoCoin Core 10.3

v0.10.3.1

Behold, Octocoin is reborn!

Left for dead, abandoned by it's original developers, and community.  Octocoin makes a return with a shiny new Qt wallet based on the latest Litecoin 0.10.x source tree.

It's my pleasure to release Octocoin Core 10.3 (v0.10.3.1).

As always, before updating please make a backup of your `wallet.dat` file.  This version should be able to open any wallet.dat files created with the legacy Octocoin client, however once opened the `wallet.dat` file can no longer be opened in the legacy client.  Additionally, there is no hard fork.  The current block chain is 100% compatible with this new version.

Its recommended (but not mandatory) that everyone update to this version.

SecurePayment CC - http://securepayment.cc has kindly offered to sponsor this release.
Please show your appreciation by mining at their pools (http://mining.securepayment.cc).

Download Octocoin Core

Yes there are Mac OS X Wallets and Windows Installers, the whole thing, done right! I'm not just some guy who's copying and pasting code.  I spent the time and effort using my skill and knowledge to build a full quality release.  The wallets below were built using the Gitian build process, the same process used for Bitcoin releases.

Source code and release info: https://github.com/octocoin-project/octocoin/releases/tag/v0.10.3.1

The Github project can be found at:
https://github.com/octocoin-project/octocoin

Note: DNS seed servers are not up yet.

  • Current Block Reward: 80
  • Halving Interval: Every 358,364 blocks (1 year) after block number 180,655
  • Difficulty Re-targets: Every Block
  • Total Octocoin: Between** 81,350,163 and 135,776,563

Minting (aka mining) Schedule:

Block #1 to #180,655

  • Block 1 was rewarded 711,111 Octocoins.*

The Blockchain download stalls at block 75888 for some users. This was corrected in version 0.10.3.1.  If you are using 0.10.3.0 it's recommended that you update to avoid problems.

I got some clarification from Bittrex, the "Octocoin" they are referring to is the Counterparty asset "OCTO" which is something totally different.

Anyway...

To maintain compatibility with the original Octocoin wallet.dat files, Berkeley DB 5.3 was used.

AFAIK octo coin moved to be a Counterparty token
and there was a swap
and could earn coins by participating in foldingcoin's merged folding@home, i still have coins in my counterparty wallet

not hashing, folding and curing (check FLDC merged-folding! reuse good GPUs)

Any thoughts/ideas on what your going to do going forward ? Any talks/plans on getting Octocoin 888 on an exchange ?

Any plans on what to do with all burned coins ? Maybe hardcode a faucet out of that address that pays small amounts to anyone running a full node.

Cant it be hard-coded into the octocoin client ?

something like xfer all coins from X address to Y address after block #whatever and force the xfer into the block chain

everyone would have to run the same client anyone who isnt will be on the wrong chain/fork but gives a chance to bring those coins back to the community and can do something interesting with them.

I mean less coins the better right makes em more valuable but still would be a cool idea something different that i havent seen in the crypto world

Well, I'm getting the website up and running.  Currently putting up some content, etc..
As for next steps, I would hope some members of the community would step up and offer their suggestions on direction.

I'll reveal some of my thoughts/ideas after I have the website published.

That's what we call a 'hardfork' and you want to avoid those unless it's absolutely needed.

I mean less coins the better right makes em more valuable but still would be a cool idea something different that i havent seen in the crypto world

I understand where you are coming from with this idea, I too hate the thought of something being lost forever.  That's why I decided to revive Octocoin.

Lets say the community decides do this using one of these two methods:

  • 1. Rollback the block chain to the point before those coins were burned and erase all the transaction since that point.
  • 2. The burned coins remain lost forever.  The money supply is increased by an amount equal to the number of burned coins.

#1 is done with a hardfork and a checkpoint.
#2 is done by creating a block reward equal to the amount of burned coins with a coinbase rule that states the reward must go to a specific address.

The first option goes against the very purpose of why a blockchain exists.  Octocoin would instantly loose all credibility as a crypto currency.  Crypto is decentralized and built on zero trust.  Both of these options would potentially place trust in a centralized authority.  The zero trust principal that Bitcoin is based on will always assume that a central authority has the potential to violate trust.

The best way forward for Octocoin is to forget about those burned coins.  Accept that they are lost forever and that is a good thing.

Vote this up on cryptsy.

https://www.cryptsy.com/coinvotes/# and vote for octo 888 to get listed.  Everyone gets 1 free vote then you can vote with cryptsy points or bitcoin.

1AEnN7gdBFLj8cD52jotepbMz4sqKPDcEg that is the cryptsy Octo 888 voting address every 0.0002 you deposit is considered 1 vote.

I think you need something like 65k+ votes to actually get it listed currently sitting @ 1250 votes.

Also coin needs more nodes i think the pool and I are the only nodes running......occasionally another node comes online but after a shortwhile disconnects.

Excellent work, this a great first start.  Lets get those free votes in and raise awareness.  More users amounts to more nodes.
My next step is to try and get an Elecrtum wallet for OctoCoin.

Here's a tip:
If you want to help, but don't like the idea of paying for votes. Head over to the Bitcoin faucet list on FaucetBOX and use the voting address.

Most likely are users that are using the old versions instead of doing the upgrade... if there isn't a huge gap of versions of the components i think it shouldn't be a problem

This is due the Octocoin not changing the pchMessageStart value to something unique.  I plan on doing this once most of the network has upgraded to the new client.  Otherwise we risk forking the block chain if it done too soon.

Block explorer stuck on block 452416

Sadly I don't run or maintain that Blockexplorer.  I am hopping someone else could setup another on their own terms.  I will offer a 600 OctoCoin reward for anyone that sets up a block explorer (not crawler).  An extra 300 Octocoin if it's on a dedicated domain.

Yeah, and if possible maybe even let the old version if are know to cause forks to stop syncing... do you have an ETA about this fact or for now the focus is about planning?

c-cex.com has voting up for Octocoin 888 - https://c-cex.com/?id=vote

BTC Voting address: 1AKCREydFp8eDfLT436SohhomPXxMGVFej

You can vote for free once per day if you have BTC in your c-cex.com account.
---
Vote this up on cryptsy.

https://www.cryptsy.com/coinvotes/# and vote for octo 888 to get listed.

If we can get it added on either of these exchanges i know of a pretty decent size pool that will add Octocoin to it.

yes OCTO is the Counterparty asset that used to be 888 (devs abandoned original scrypt coin from March 2014).  A burn took place a while back, so that's where we are

no that's where some people are. some members chose to burn their coins, it's their coins, they can do whatever they want with them.

i'm talking about the original 888 coin, hence this thread.

last i heard bittrex suspended trading because the wallet was broken, since it's supposedly been fixed.

if anything, burning 20,000,000 of 88,000,000 888 coins only made the remaining 888 more valuable.

I'm busy working on an Electrum wallet for OctoCoin.  It could be some time before that's ready.
In the mean time we need to raise more awareness for OctoCoin.  Any Ideas?

good on you!

well we need to get it listed, so we need people to go to the bittrex IRC channel and tell their admins that we have a working wallet, and that they should relist us. will need proof showing that it's working

we could use a block explorer too, if we need to raise money for that, let me know, i can chip in.

I got an explorer up @ https://chainz.cryptoid.info/octo/

I really liked the interface and they responded pretty quickly to my request, so i went ahead and paid for 1 year hosting.

Next steps is getting onto an exchange.  Anyone have an experience with getting a coin listed ? if yes please tell us the story.  Since cryptsy has been on the fritz we can count them out for now but Bittrex, Poloniex, C-cex, Bleutrade, and Bter should be our focus.  Anyone know someone with any influence at any of these exchanges ?

My wallet won't sync anymore for some odd reason? Any ideas why that might be?

Until the DNS seed servers are properly setup it will be necessary to manually add nodes:

Code:
octocoin.securepayment.cc
188.165.3.6
178.62.187.119
54.223.76.165
93.157.47.8
73.28.52.171
70.51.34.92

in your Qt Wallet, go to the debug window, then 'console' tab.  Type in

Code:
addnode <address> add

Replace '<address>' with one node entry from above.  Then hit enter.  Repeat for each node.  For example,

Code:
addnode octocoin.securepayment.cc add
addnode 188.165.3.6 add
addnode 93.157.47.8 add

There are two issues blocking the deployment of the DNS seed servers.  First off, I do not have control of the octocoin.org domain.   I you look at the source code, the current DNS seed servers are s1.octocoin.org and s2.octocoin.org.

It's easy enough to change that, but I have not decided if I will just use another domain and release an updated client, or wait and hope to register the octocoin.org domain when it expires later this year.  Secondly, there are just too few active nodes to make it useful/worthwhile to setup a DNS seed.

I heard back from BleuTrade and they want 2 BTC

Quote
Bleutrade now charges 2 BTC for adding new coins.
This value is required for maintenance of our servers and that the coin is not delisted shortly.

I guess running an exchange isn't very profitable these days.

well I had some BTC in cryptsy that i'd donate towards 2 2BTC bounty, but that's probably lost now.

2 BTC isn't a lot. it's like $800, the market cap of this coin is at least 100 BTC at the low end...

someone should organize a way to donate towards this, i'm not sure on the best way to move forward with that, a trustless system would be needed, but i've seen it done before

Paying to be on an exchange is a bad idea, unless they guarantee no de-listing.. but even then. They are already going to make money on transaction and withdrawal fees. 2 BTC is a hefty price to be listed IMO.

The network is very low on active nodes and it possible many of those active nodes do not allow incoming connections.   If someone can design some banners, I'll purchase some ad space.

A mandatory update will be released shortly.  It's important that anyone running a node or client update as soon as possible to prevent a network fork.

The coming update will change the 'pchMessageStart' value to something that will be unique to Octocoin.

Details will be posted soon.

GREAT NEWS!!!

thank you yobit~!!! stepping up!!!

So I have a serious question, I would like to contribute to the blockchain, I only have Nvidia GPUs, and i really can't find a virus-free version of cudaminer, does anyone have a real resource for this? I know that scrypt is old, but I want to do my part to help reinforce the blockchain.

I think it would be helpful even if i can only provide a small about of hash power. I have a gtx 980 btw. plz help!

and again, AMAZING JOB guys, so happy today!!

ALSO!!!

We should have a resource which shows exactly how many 888 there are in circulation, since about 20 million of them were burned, this means that roughly 1/4 of the total coins that will ever be minted are non-existent.

So how many are there in the wild now? since obviously all the coins have not yet been mined. This only makes it MORE valuable, because it's even MORE rare than being reported.

Found this.   I mine with asic using cgminer never tried gpu mining.

Cudaminer thread:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=167229.0

Cudaminer Github:
https://github.com/cbuchner1/ccminer/releases

I think any mining program will be flagged as a virus/trojan on windows.

888 ON COINMARKETCAP!!!! we're on the up-and-up gents, nice to be back in the saddle.

Also, thanks for the reply Phat.

So I used to mine with GPUs pretty hardcore back in the day, and I've never seen a virus in any miner that I've used, that's why I'm very skeptical. Chrome blocks it, and Windows don't want to open it, I can't remember the name of the virus it detected, but I downloaded from those links in the past and remember scanning them and it popping up with a few nasty things, not just your run-of the-mill PUP stuff, actual viruses.

If I had money, I'd buy a cheap Scrypt ASIC to help, any recommendations?

Nice to see that Octocoin has a little more interest and now that there is some value attached with this exciting currency, I am pleased to announce the first part time job opening.
Salary is paid in Octocoin on a bi-weekly basis.  Compensation will be based on experience and the future/expected market value of Octocoin.  In other words we do not expect this to be your one and only job to make a living.

At least for the first 1 to 2 years.  You are welcome (and recommended) to keep your current employment and work with us remotely (telecommuting/virtual office) on your own time.

Without further ado...

See the full list of current opportunities at http://octocoinfoundation.org/jobs
The list is also on this forum thread on the first page.

I have a few Gridseed G-Blades and Zeus x3s that i use for scrypt mining nothing special.  Scrypt asic hardware is getting a bit more difficult to find.  Try ebay.

As far as the mining program having trojan/virus.  When mining programs were first made antivirus programs didn't have them flagged as such.  Because the code for the mining program is open source trojan/virus makers started using parts of the original code in their trojans/virus.  Your antivirus will give you false positives on probably any mining software you download nowadays.

I know https://www.nicehash.com/?p=software#gpu has links to software and im pretty sure if they are offering it to their potential customers they've done their homework to ensure its safe to use but again your a/v may flag it as trojan/virus.

This is a typical problem with small networks on the current difficulty algorithm, really not much you can do about it except wait it out.  It should become less of an occurrence once the network gets larger and there are more miners.

Iif it continues to happen after the network grows larger, I may consider replacing the difficulty algorithm with Zetacoin's algorithm

This is happening because someone is mining on and off.   They jump on drop 80 - 100MH/s mining a ton of blocks until it gets too difficult to solve quickly.  Slowly but surely lower speed miners start hitting blocks.   Difficulty retargets after every block so this can take sometime depending how long it takes to solve, but honestly i think it happens pretty quick with Octocoin.   I've seen some chains go 14-18 hours without mining a block.

Yeah, I remember that first wave of scrypt coins were terribad when a multipool would hit and run them.

Octocoin actually had that problem too in it's early months, I was actually the one who discovered the multipool that was doing it, and struck a deal with the owner to leave it alone (as we were working on implementing the gravity well in a few thousand blocks...) I said I'd devote X amount of hashing power to his pool in return, had to rent some rigs to fulfil, but it bought us the few days we needed to get it fixed.

*also great job to all those active traders on Yobit, let's keep this activity going! I'm doing my part ^_^

Multi-algo or Proof of Stake would be nice but that would require a massive overhaul of the code but i'll settle for a PPLNS pool. Hopefully myfirst can fill that position soon and get some help with the coin.

We definitely need something to attract miners production went from (post halving) ~35,000 octocoin a day to ~8,300 octocoin a day since the on and off hashing.  I'm curious if the decrease in coins mined per day will mess with the difficulty later on down the line....

So far so good @ Yobit I was able to pick up over 5k octo pretty cheap when i compared to my mining costs @ the current difficulty.

Is there a way to fork Octocoin to run on a different hashing algorithm? Like one of the newer ones that can still be mined on a GPU for for alot less power consumption? I'm really not that up-to-date with which algo is best, but it would be nice to contribute with GPUs again. No farm, just let the gamers out there do their part Wink

So it looks like someone is trying to push the price down aggressively. Volume is good, but when the next sell point is 400 sats, why push it down to 100 and put up a 100 sell wall? Someone's trying to scoop this stuff up cheap... I think that 400 satoshis is indicative of it's true value, it would be good to keep it above that. only 20 or so million coins in the wild, and 20 million are gone forever thanks to the burn, octocoin is pretty rare compared with other alts. if anything it's undervalued.

yeah, that's probably the one that's doing those mass sells, would make sense. It's going to be hard to raise the price to something reasonable when the coin is being attacked by a multipool.

From what I see, we could either keep the value artificially low for a while so maybe they remove octo from their pool rotation... Or just get enough hashing power ourselves so we can compete. I'd rather do the latter, but again without a scrypt ASIC there don't seem to be any other alternatives.

I'll gladly donate towards a faucet if someone wants to set it up. I'll throw in 5k.

And the value is low, it's only been listed for a couple weeks. This is the ground floor.

Next step is generating interest with real investors.

There is a faucet setup already http://faucet.securepayment.cc/888  There is another but i can't find/remember where right now.

Myfirst did an amazing job documenting every check out the first two posts of this thread.  Don't stop there check out his site www.octocoinfoundation.org all the info is in there.

My favorite page is http://www.octocoinfoundation.org/resources it lists everything you need to get started link to precompiled wallets(windows, mac.linux), github, faucet, and a detailed guide to on how to submit a request to get OctoCoin 888 listed on various exchanges.

So yesterday I rented 100 MH/s to try and actually get through and mine some coins.  I also had three full nodes up and running.  The three nodes are whitelisted to accept and rebroadcast any and all transactions to and from each other.

Two nodes were in sync with the original block explorer https://chainz.cryptoid.info/octo/ and the only known public pool http://octocoin.securepayment.cc/.  The third node was 23 blocks ahead.  In console on all three I did getpeerinfo and getinfo and confirmed that the two that were in sync had full block data available up to there respective block(sorry i didnt write it down Huh).  The third node that was 23 blocks ahead but only had block headers for those 23 blocks.

The third node would not broadcast the additional blocks it had it was just stuck the difficulty on it was ~21.  I something was wrong with it so I took it offline.

My third node was the only thing bridging the gap between the other miner (8NZm7kxY3fDCzDnZKTnZx9nCmeQiCtp986) the block explorer and my two nodes from forking.  Whoever else is mining isn't broadcasting their solved blocks to the original pool or original block explorer as they are found.  They are only transmitting block headers to my third node.

The info in the two block explorers are different i think i realized the problem around block 549271.
https://chainz.cryptoid.info/octo/
https://prohashing.com/explorer/Octocoin/

Nearly all the blocks i mined yesterday were orphaned. Kinda wierd though on octocoin.securepayment.cc we mind upto block #549460 passed the other miner and his chain is right now at 549315 and is the chain taking the lead.  I don't know if this is on purpose or just some weird network behavior.  Honestly its really frustrating but im good i mined all last year i've gone a ton of octo in other wallets.

Whoever you are please add all these nodes to your config file and double check that full block data is being transmitted upon mining.  I'm sure some are yours but some aren't.

Why not switch octocoin to a pos algo for the long term?? Make coin cap infinite and introduce 1-2% yearly stake interest to keep inflation low. The pow system right now is broken with multipools abusing it and no blocks being found for 10-20 hours at a time making the coin unusable. Besides POS provides a better main chain for sidechains later on and helps a coin better retain value. That is my opinion i would like to hear other peoples opinion on this.

Yeah, PoS is good, I'd be for it.

Also another GPU-only hashing algo would work, anything that can't be abused by ASIC farms. I don't know how many GPU farms are still around...

Also, whoever keeps pushing the price down, just let them have their fun. Don't feed him.

Constantly eating the buy walls and pushing a massive sell wall down.

Pretty obvious attempt to get the price down low enough to get tons of this coin for cheap.

Don't sell 888 that low, we've waited long enough, we can wait past this, don't let him sink the ship, it only works if there's volume this low. IF not he'll learn.

POS would be awesome i'm definitely for that.  POW is terrible right now something is definitely wrong or there is some massive attack idk.

I'll admit i helped dump down hoping the lower price will deter the miner from mining. The number of orphans I've had are ridiculous.

All's fair in love and trading amirite? Smiley

So it's a battle between keeping it low enough so the multipool stays away, and keeping volume high enough to not be de-listed.

As long as we're on the same page as far as long-term growth is concerned, I'm all for fucking the multipool over, doesn't hurt to scoop up some cheap now anyways.

And perhaps this buys us time to consider the technical ramifications of going to PoS, if that's even feasible almost 2 years into a coin's life. Also, what that will mean for trading... although TBH, the real traders don't mine, so they wouldn't care. I was a lowly miner, but all the good fortunes I've had in crypto have come from trading. Bought my GTX 980 with my profits, woo! too bad i can't really mine with it anymore, was sad to see the old 7970 sputter and die Sad

I hope we can count on you to move the price in the right direction when the time comes. I personally feel that 400 sat is a good baseline, that's what it used to be, and even though a lot of coins have been mined since then, there are actually LESS coins in the wild right now than there was back then, because of that huge burn. I think it has potential to go up a lot higher, would like to see 1500 sat be the baseline one the coin hits it's stride. I was a part of the blackcoin team and look at what they did. I still know the dev of that first reverse-multipool that would mine BTC to buy blackcoin, just put constant buy pressure on the market, it was a cool idea.

Yeah, people were going crazy in yobit chat, like 10 people were all screaming GO 888 GO!!! bout time we got some recognition.

Yobit seems to list the coins on the left-hand column by volume, so now 888 is actually visible. Lets put some more volume on it in the next 12 hours or so, so it's 24-hour average doesn't drop. I think getting the price back to the ballpark it was earlier today is important, but secondary to sustaining volume so that we keep our visibility. Once we drop back to the bottom, that could be a K.O for the coin, history will show a mini-pump and then no activity, not good. I don't have much BTC or 888, but I'm liquidating holdings in other coins to be able to keep some volume happening. Every bit counts. Every minute we're on that top 20 list is one minute of free promo.

Well, probably for the best the price is so low, it will keep away the multipool so our miners can rack up the octo.

Let me know when we're ready to pump, once you miners have had your fill. PM me and I'll help when the time comes.

Paysafe pool ? What is this pool website address?

I know that http://octocoin.securepayment.cc takes a few minutes (5-10 min) to show hashrate, sometimes it doesn't show at all but when I check blocks solved by my address it shows found and cgminer shows its connected and working.

Hmm, looks like the difficulty got pushed up to almost 2000+ at one point while I was busy with real life and working.  Not sure if that's good or bad, especially since we have not mined a block for almost a day now.
Anyway... I'll spend this weekend updating the website and forum posts.  I've also gotten some interest from volunteers which is a good sign.

Thanks for your support of Octocoin so far.

Adding PoS would probably solve the issues with difficulty.  If we add that feature, would 'Octocoin' still be 'Octocoin'?

Hmm, looks like the difficulty got pushed up to almost 2000+ at one point while I was busy with real life and working.  Not sure if that's good or bad, especially since we have not mined a block for almost a day now.
Anyway... I'll spend this weekend updating the website and forum posts.  I've also gotten some interest from volunteers which is a good sign.

Thanks for your support of Octocoin so far.

Adding PoS would probably solve the issues with difficulty.  If we add that feature, would 'Octocoin' still be 'Octocoin'?

WOW that difficulty though.  I think they're just trying to disrupt the coin and see if dev does anything or lets coin die.

@myfirst PoS would be great. I don't think adding the feature changes anything its just an addition to the coin, unless your looking to rebrand in which case I would be for it as well.  I think the community is just hoping for more regular updates/communications from you but im sure you'll get some support on anything your looking to do with Octocoin.

I noticed that Bitterex was going to remove OCTO the counterparty asset.  This may help pave the way for reintroducing Octocoin 888 to bitterex.  I believe they have a large stash of coins from when Octocoin 888 was originally removed.

10.4 release will be made available in just a few hours.  This merges in all the latest upstream Litecoin changes since 10.3.  Also manually ported in the command line and config file option 'maxtipage' (more on that later) from the upstream Bitcoin codebase.

The 10.4 release tag has been cut and is available on Github.
https://github.com/octocoin-project/octocoin/releases/tag/v0.10.4.0

Wallets are currently compiling.  Once complete I'll update the thread and post here.

The two most notable changes in this version are the BIP65 soft fork to enforce OP_CHECKLOCKTIMEVERIFY opcode and the new configuration/command line option to manually specify your own maxtipage.  As a result of BIP65, Octocoin will now mine version 4 blocks.

Also of note... Since it's been more than 24 hours since the last mined block your clients may get stuck on "Octocoin is downloading blocks..." on startup.

Code:
maxtipage=432000

New 10.4 wallets have been published and the main thread has been updated.  Pool operators are encouraged to update to this release, especially if you are getting the following error and you have the full chain up to block #552172:

Code:
WARNING mining # Blockchain is downloading... will check back in 30 sec

The 'getblocktemplate' RPC function returns:

Code:
error: {"code":-10,"message":"Octocoin is downloading blocks..."}

Update to 10.4, add the following to your configuration, and restart Octocoin:

Code:
maxtipage=432000

Wallets and source can be downloaded from Github or http://getoctocoin.com/

Looks like the blockchain is moving along nicely again.  Now it's time to do some marketing.  I have a volunteer designing some banners.  Can I get someone to design a landing page?
Also I was considering changing the 3 character code to either OTC, OCO, or CPH and moving the triple to become part of a dedicated currency symbol:

What the opinion here?
Feel free to submit designs.

Haha wow, oldskool here.  Good luck with takeover, hope you make something of it.

It's to bad how holzer (and whoever else ran this coin) just dropped it and it went to shit.  Same holzer did with Murraycoin. What a shit talker that guy is.

He had a nice run with a lil something called Megacoin though I'm sure Wink

Octocoin is not listed at Bittrex, they only have the Counterparty asset that is not affiliated with this 'original' Octocoin.

If these Octo are on Bittrex, you CANNOT withdraw them to the regular QT wallet, they are a Counterparty asset, which is accessed via counter wallet.io

Found another multipool you can mine Octocoin on.  I believe this was the multipool that started the difficulty climb back in March.  If you look at their mining address they started back 3/22 mining.

Not many people appear to be interested in Octocoin at the moment.  Haven't gotten any responses to the paid jobs ads either.
I'll continue to support the codebase, updating it, etc.

I think two things need to happen:

1) Octocoin needs to get listed on a high volume exchange
2) Network hash needs to increase by a lot.

How do we get there?

I’m excited to announce that I’m working on a game with Octocoin at its core. It should be ready for play by beta users soon.

I’m a big fan of Octocoin—it’s fun, it’s a little dark. And Octocoin has the right tech for my game, so it was the perfect coin to develop with.

Hello all, and more info to come!

Here’s some of the game’s story:

Count Dracula has preyed on Transylvanians since the fifteenth century. From his dark castle in the Carpathian Mountains, the vampire emerges each night to suck their blood, meddle with their minds, and take the fairest of their women as his brides, damning them to an undead existence of service to him.

Few ever dared challenge the Count—few save the warriors of the Octo family. But after centuries of battle, Dracula finally killed the last of them. With none left to oppose him, Dracula abducts one new bride after another.

But hope has found its way back into the Romanian darkness. When word of the Octo family’s demise reached Professor Van Helsing in Amsterdam, he left at once to confront his old adversary. The professor has a plan.

I think two things need to happen:

1) Octocoin needs to get listed on a high volume exchange
2) Network hash needs to increase by a lot.

How do we get there?

Been thinking about this for a while....

1)To get on a high volume exchange we need higher volumes on the current exchange.

2)The answer is Merged Mining, obviously you can implement it but we need to give pools a reason to merge mine the coin.

Maybe setting up a liquidity group with some big coin holders get some decent buy/sell walls.

With all the craze about stealth addresses and ring signatures have you considered theses features for Octocoin ?

How about requesting to get added on Bitsquare Decentralized Exchange ? (https://forum.bitsquare.io/t/how-to-add-your-favorite-altcoin/46)

Edited: added Bitsquare Question

How about requesting to get added on Bitsquare Decentralized Exchange ? (https://forum.bitsquare.io/t/how-to-add-your-favorite-altcoin/46)

I've submitted the form as described on that page.  However it would be great if someone could write the address validation and unittest code they are requesting.

https://github.com/bitsquare/bitsquare/blob/Development/gui/src/test/java/io/bitsquare/gui/util/validation/AltCoinAddressValidatorTest.java
https://github.com/bitsquare/bitsquare/blob/Development/gui/src/main/java/io/bitsquare/gui/util/validation/AltCoinAddressValidator.java

If no one is able to do it, I'll try and get to it in the next few months.  It looks simple, but needs some time.
Also going to look into syncing with upsteam v0.13.2.1 in the next few weeks.

Need a link for the current wallet downloads. The securepayment links on the main page/github page, etc... are not working. Maybe put them on Google Drive?

Small outage with our CDN provider.  The links should be functional soon.   I'll be adding some mirrors soon.

Since a few places can't use a set of numbers as a currency code, Octocoin must adopt a new one in order to go mainstream.  Lets start with these suggestions:

  • OTC
  • XOC
  • XOT
  • CPH
  • OCO
  • OCT (3)
  • OCH
  • OTO
  • OTG
  • OTT

Which do you like?  Voting ends in 10 days.

OCT seems like the logical choice (I think I've seen OCTO somewhere too?). OCH is the Swedish word for "and" so that one gets just weird for me Smiley

I like OCT as well.

@myfirst Yobits octocoin wallet has been in Maintenance for a while now.  I've filed multiple tickets to no avail. Have you had any communication with them ?

I know of several coins (TES, first gen NAV) that had their wallets put into maintenance mode indefinitely at Yobit. My recommendation is to not trade with them at all.

Yes, I've contacted them and the response is always the same each time.  Perhaps when I merge in the latest upstream code they will decide to update  Undecided

Looks like OCT is the winner.
Before it's made official I'll need to verify it does not already conflict with an existing or past currency.

OctoCoin has nice price potential . However at the moment it needs mobile wallets and more exchanges .  I can see this coin with a Mil Market Cap in near future.
Contacted coinmarketcap and got Octocoin Social Tab Updated. Who is in control of the official twitter account? you need too upoad Screenshots of Wallet too your twitter and make a general description of Octocoin.
Bring the Twitter page back from the dead and i will give retweets and likes.

If anyone needs to download the 10.4 wallet (64 bit), you can download the original untouched wallet from Mega:
The one from Secure Payments CC is dead.

QT is in the Bin Folder like this ->"octocoin-0.10.4.0-win64.zip\octocoin-0.10.4.0\bin\octocoin-qt.exe"

LINKS ON WEBSITE WORK http://getoctocoin.com/ & http://octocoinfoundation.org/

DONT USE ANOTHER WALLET!! THAT IS NOT PROVIDED BY DEV

Hello OctoCoin community ---

OctoCoin is available for atomic swap trading on Komodo Platform's decentralized exchange, BarterDEX! Right NOW, peer2peer, on Mainnet with live orderbooks. Anyone can test it out if you'd like. We are taking privacy to new heights by keeping your funds and privkeys in YOUR HANDS! zK-SNARK coin Jumblr in YOUR HANDS! Liquidity of each coin is still building, but BarterDEX can pair your coin with any other of the 80+ coins on the exchange. If a team member, perhaps someone from marketing, would like to test out an atomic swap through our GUI, please send me a DM : ) We have a team availabe for walking leaders of featured coins through the Komodo ecosystem to teach you how your community can benefit from BarterDEX!

This is truly a community project - the keys are now in your hands! YOU can be a marketmaker for your coin, making it available to BarterDEX users around the globe ‪24/7‬. YOU can create a SPV electrum server, allowing BarterDEX users to manage and trade your coin without downloading the entire blockchain. We would be happy to assist you with setting these up. It would be nice to have your coin paired with KMD - then we could introduce it to the community as having liquidity in BarterDEX!

Welcome to the BarterDEX decentralized exchange!

Trade freely and safely,
Jay

Hello again,

I realized that I never linked you to the Github wiki explanation on how to set up a SPV electrum server, so... there it is! And if you are curious, our SPV electrum servers are customized for Komodo and were not affected by the recent security risk.

Hello everyone!

Glad to see that the Octocoin community is still alive.

Can we get a status report? It would be nice to know if the developers are still around, and if there are any future plans.

Also, is it possible to have the developers contact the administrators at YoBit.net and have them take the Octocoin wallet off of "maintenance mode" so that we can withdraw funds?

The original developers are gone, but I've done some work to keep the codebase up to date.  Any future plans depend entirely on the community/holders. I will be glad to offer some assistance in direction.  (the company I work for has some slight interest in Octocoin which is why I am able to dedicate some time to it.)

YoBit under provisions hardware and oversells it's capacity.  Meaning they have countless number of markets but don't actively run all the wallets/nodes for each of those markets.  Initially, they'll have the wallet/node running, but later suspend it so they can continue to add more markets.  It's a terrible way to do business and will ultimately come back and bite them.

I've already asked YoBit to re-enable to wallet, but I'm getting no response from them.

I would like to assist in developing Octocoin. I am willing to contribute via marketing, website construction, writing, social media, etc.

Please let me know if there is any way I can help directly. We need to get Octocoin off the ground!

Can you explain why your company is expressing an interest in Octocoin?

Over 100 coins on the pool, with more added regularly!
BlockMasters.co (Formally BlockMunch) has added OctoCoin to it's Multi-Pool!  Only 0.25% Fee's!
We are now a Multi-Pool!  We mine the most profitable coin always, and maximize your return!
Choose your payout style.  We pay out in this coin, BTC, LTC, and any coin we currently have listed on the pool!

You can also use your ASIC's in our SHA256, X11, & Scrypt ports and get paid in this coin or BTC!  Just change the algo and the port number in the example belows!

Example Config is Below for OctoCoin Pay:
Code:
-a scrypt -o stratum+tcp://blockmasters.co:3433 -u 8U5VCfHr3YXEggLMsduHwCmvvXQkG82uti -p c=888

To mine only this coin use mc=888, example below for BTC pay & mining this coin only.  You can also mine this coin and get paid in this coin by using c=888,mc=888 as your password.
Code:
-a scrypt -o stratum+tcp://blockmasters.co:3433 -u 1JFx3fE462vMsTeYkNK5yvdWeg2wpmxvBD -p c=BTC,mc=888

Example Config Below for BTC Pay
Code:
-a scrypt -o stratum+tcp://blockmasters.co:3433 -u 1JFx3fE462vMsTeYkNK5yvdWeg2wpmxvBD -p c=BTC

Example Config Below for LTC Pay
Code:
-a scrypt -o stratum+tcp://blockmasters.co:3433 -u LRgQk63NRnJQ8PBTU8yyHAm5aGfNjzhMZu -p c=LTC
