Downloaded the client wallet. It is taking little longer than I expected to get in sync. Is this pretty typical for any wallet?

The time it takes to fully sync can vary depending on many factors. Your Internet connectivity speed and the number of peers you have are big factors.
Different coins (wallets) have different size blockchains so, the time it takes almost never would be typically the same for various coins. The number of peers on the given network and even the peers location relevant to you would impact the time it would take also.
You want to watch for two things: A) Do you have peers (connections to other nodes)? and B) Is your block height (position you are in the blockchain) increasing? If you click the 'Help' menu and select 'Debug window' you will see an informative dialog. This dialog will have 'Number of connections' and 'Current number of blocks' displayed and answer these two questions for you. If both answers are yes, allow it to run its course. If you have a low number of peers (less than 5) you should discover more peers the longer the software is running. So again, allow it to run its course and don't repeatedly close and open it. Doing so will only make you have to find peers again, adding to the time it will take plus the many repeated load times.
If either of the above questions are answered "no", you have an underlining issue. This could be your network or firewall. If you at first get peers and the number doesn't raise and/or stay constant (drops from some number to zero) your blockchain could be corrupted or in a fork, causing peers to drop you. But this most likely is not the case.
Judging by your comment, you just need to apply more time. This is usually the case. There are ways you can bypass syncing over the network with a bootstrap or a snapshot but, if you have already progressed with syncing over the network, I would suggest you just continue.
