Trying out my first rental as the pool % is closing in on my guess, I think I have it configured correctly as the hash is registering on my dashboard.  A modest 7TH for ~10 hours, but I wanted to stay small my first rental, just to get a feel for it.  I'm gonna keep tossing small rentals this way until my period has passed, or maybe up this one because it might run too long.  Good luck, everyone (especially me and traxor)!

Earlier I posted that it would still go to the closest.  at least for this round I think it will remain that way.  However, for future rounds, to win the prize the block will have to be solved in a range you've picked.  Otherwise it'll roll into the next round and increase in value.

I still haven't figured out all the details of how to run this on a continual basis.  I'm thinking that maybe I run it similar to Phil's contest... You make one guess of a range prior to the start of the round.  Will probably increase the allowed ranges.  Like I wrote... I haven't figured it all out yet

100TH incoming for the next 2 hours, if I timed it right both my rentals should end around my guess.

I forgot about staying small with rentals, gotta step it up now or never!  

Next round if the block has to happen within the guess range then I would also like to see larger ranges, like 2%+ somewhere I think would work out.

Maybe even a 5% window would be good for future guess games, that way you could have some time to let a decent rental run during your period.  Even my little 100TH for a couple hours moved the pool % noticeably.

next time 2 for finder 1 for % guess.

I find on an emotional level that if I rent .25 btc  at 500 th    out of zone knowing I get at best 1 coin  and the in zone guy gets 2 coins as hard to pull the trigger on a big rental.

And with a small zone and a long wait for it to come I get impatience.

Also if nice/west hash has a good price out of % zone  it gets annoying.

LASERminer is correct here.  If the block is found in your zone, you get 2BTC.  If in addition to being in your zone, it is also you who finds the block, you get an additional 1BTC.  There is no separate block finder's bonus.  At least not for this iteration of the contest.

Basically... somebody is absolutely guaranteed to win 2BTC regardless of who finds the block (as long as that somebody is actively mining).  If it just so happens that the miner who finds the block does so during that miner's guessed range, they win an extra 1BTC - for a total of 3.

So, this gives you some chance to play strategy.  For example, let's say your guess is 93 - 93.99 and the pool is currently at 80.  It probably doesn't make sense for you to throw a big rental down.  However, if the pool is at 90, well, you might throw the rental down then.  Sure, it's outside your range, but what are the chances you're going to hit that block immediately after starting your rental?

I'm still working out rules for upcoming rounds.  There will definitely be a range.  That range will probably be around 5%.  You will likely only get 1 pick - which must be made prior to the round start.  The prize will be rolled over into the following round if nobody's guess wins.

EDIT: yup, Phil, your edited post is correct.  Your rental goes obviously towards your own mining earnings, but not towards any bonus for you until the round hits your range.  That's when it makes sense to hit with the big rental - for the chance at that 3 coins.
