I believe you can download the page from augur.net and execute it locally.

...put some reasonable economic numbers behind each to estimate what market cap might result from each    NOW and expected in say 3 years?

Looks great at first glance. After some digging, a lot of DApps seem abandoned, perhaps being hard to execute or simply not motivated to develop into something substantial. Quite a few Wordpress sites filled with exciting new adventures but nothing real behind them. A lot of fluff.

Please explain the advantage of running these apps on ether?

I'm psyched for Augur and Slock.it

... or on Rootstock ...

or on a real platform (4x faster and already scalable):

But just don't blindly take my word for it like lemmings.  Let's see what the Augur devs themselves are saying about "potential multi-chain development"

https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php/topic,21906.msg285385.html#msg285385

"we really want to test out BitShares as a platform on a real useful use case"

Who can you trust more?

trolls or blockchain certified developers?

Why would they use the BitShares blockchain?  Because they know that if they don't, then someone else will.

What makes you think an Augur dev posted that?

Following this thread (seems to have degenerated into some kind of debate), but I am hoping to learn more about what the best ETH dapps might be at the moment Smiley I've looked into a lot already, but I want to learn more.

I'm psyched for Augur and Slock.it

Augur - a trustless, decentralized, unregulated, low fee prediction market. This IMO is the biggest initial use case for Ethereum. These types of industries are notorious for corruption, high fees, and government interference. With smart contracts on a decentralized system... its resistant to all those things. There is potential there to take the gambling industry by storm.

Slock.it is a very interesting project, but I have a harder time understanding why it is a good fit for a decentralized system as opposed to a centralized one. I think the main benefit is that it could allow for an IoT based transaction ecosystem that doesn't require vendor lockin, but the path to that doesn't seem very clear.

Augur.net is a website managed by "Forecast Foundation". They have a strict TOS and the only way to use augur "the decentralized application" is by accessing augur.net

"Slock.it is a registered company in Germany" this is what they say on the main page.

Simple question : What if augur.net goes down or it's shut down ? If it's a decentralized app i should be able to use it right away somewhere else.

Yes in some ways it seems ETH is not as decentralized as it seems. Don't get me wrong I love the tech though.

i've heard Augur mentioned a lot, but there are already lots of sportsbooks and prediction markets.  and the government isnt shutting them down.  many are publicly owned and operating legally. most are offshore (meaning outside the US, even the ones that are open to US customers).  people in general do not care if the thing is decentralized.  they want customer support.  i think the traction on augur might be comparable to the traffic on swcpoker.  i looked into pokereum at one point but the devs seem clueless and inactive.

I believe you can download the page from augur.net and execute it locally.

"The page" is a simple html result of a backend process. You need the source code and install the source code on your server.

Augur is not a decentraalized app. It's a website offering bets with no betting licence and no contact details.

DAPP over ethereum need an interface that ususally reside on a centralized server. While the base app code is running over a decentralized network, the interface and user interaction is over a simple web site, controlled by an third party.

Anyway, i have a much important question : What if augur team decide to shut down the dapp (send a kill signal). What happens with customer funds ?  The address owning a contract can shut it down or update it anytime they want.

That's the idea. Unstoppable dapps without boarders or any controlling  authority beyond the Turing complete smart contract.

rent-seeking blockchains
at least there is some competition
but a Dapp could unplug and move to the cheapest/best asset platform
if there are handcuffs ... caution!
