bitasset

I am sorry that I am unable to help.  My *guess* is that it will be impossible or nearly so to get your coins back.

There is no Cyber Police that I know of.  You might try contacting your local police however, especially if there is a chance that the thief might be someone that you know or a local...  The sooner you report the theft, the better, although most such thieves just send the BTC on and on and on...

There may be expert hackers HERE at bitcointalk who might help, but I know ZERO about that.

The big lesson to be learned, by all of us (myself most definitely included) is to be extremely cautious with your computer.  I lost some BTC to a clever little scam once.  Ahh, I was NOT cautious...

I likely speak for all of us here: Best of luck to you in getting them back.

time is of the essence!
if you encrypted your wallet with a strong password there's a good chance that hacker has not yet burt forced your password
quiclky go find a backup of your wallet and import it in blockchain.info and move your coins out of there!

This is clearly a phishing scam! If these are true, I guess there is no way for you to get back your coins unless the hacker decided to give them back to you. This is the disadvantage of no-charge back feature of bitcoin, even though the transaction was not initiated by the owner.

Well firstly it's hard for me to feel bad for you since, you haven't even mentioned where or how you found this job and you claim they have your info yet fail to explain why ? Also you downloaded a file from a website without a domain, then you get a warning from your browser then you warned not to download the file but you still went ahead and did it anyway. I don't think anyone can help you since you not explaining anything at all.

How did they get your encrypted password?  Did you have the password written on a sticky pad?

Is this where you downloaded the files from?

https://whois.icann.org/en/lookup?name=waste4energy.com

I wonder if that domain owner knows anything?  The server might be hacked though.

opening an app doesn't give away the password, you had to type it in somewhere.

i guess you used the same password for your wallet as you do for everything else, this is a bad practice which makes you very vulnerable.

sorry for your loss, once the coin move out of your control there's no getting them back. nothing can be done. its unclear how to proceed... i guess your next step would be to call the police and tell them you got robbed, maybe you'd get some kind of tax break or somthing? idk.

if you suddenly get a job offers, or anything which you don't even get bother with it before, don't open it,making domain like interactivebrokers.com is very easy, and i think there's no way to recover it because the btc already transferred to scammer's address

sending an Email from a legit email address is not unheard of (it is possible) and it is called Email spoofing. i asked this question a while back on reddit, you can check the answer here: https://redd.it/3ca082

to OP, check the headers of the emails you have received from them, they contain some information that you might find useful in finding the hacker(s).

oh man that is a lot of btc and ltc.  I am very sorry to hear this and I hope your investigation can find something.  Sometimes I wonder how many "job offers" that require you to apply with information about yourself are used by scammers/hackers to get into your computer.  Someone had to have known there was this amount of btc and ltc on your pc.  Have you ever indicated anywhere online how much you have?  I am always surprised when people respond to the "how many bitcoin do you have" posts, seems like an open door to the beginning of a hack through fishing.

I love Bitcoin

I might die if i lost 425 btc like you but i don't have that much. However now i will only store high amount of coin in a paper wallet printed one not stored in my laptop. And 2 factor authentication for my blockchain wallet. I wonder why you store all your coin in a blockchain wallet. Huh

Sorry for your loss.

It's obvious that you were targeted by  someone who knew that you have such stack of bitcoins and alts. Otherwise they wouldn't use that much effort
into social engineering and trojan attack both. Usually there are sorts of honeypots to fish crypto users, blind ones, but a long time since i heard anyone
go and call some1 offering a job and luring them to the pot. I would take a look at people around me if i were you.

Once again here we go, never open emails asking to download software or some files with the potential to execute scripts, especially pdf ppt and doc files, either disable macros or convert to text file online. Search for the actual source of the software if required.

I am pretty amused though that you have so much Bitcoins but do not have a paper wallet or a hardware wallet. Basically if you have more than 0.3 BTC, just buy a Trezor.

The chances of you getting your coins back is pretty much nil  if said guy knows his stuff.

Sorry for your lost. If you do somehow get it back, please get a hardware wallet

Security can do little when people are giving attackers direct access to their machines by installing viruses/trojans themselves.
This was not random effort - it was coordinated attack, and honestly - it may sound harsh now - but Op if you were dealing with HUGE amount of BTC you should be more aware of potential dangers.
This whole - we offer you a job - just install some software on your machine, scam it widely known. I've seen some people lost their bitcointalk accounts in similar attack.

Yeah this seems like a hoax story to me.
The OP also talks about the "Cyber Police" that everyone knows is a joke term and not even close to being a real thing.

Why would anyone who has 425 BTC and 40k LTC download anything on the computer that stores that?
If I had anything close to that, it would be split up into multiple address and placed into DEEP DEEP cold storage.

This story doesn't seem plausible.

I support a decentralized & unregulatable ledger first, with safe scaling over time.

Why would anyone who has 425 BTC and 40k LTC download anything on the computer that stores that?
If I had anything close to that, it would be split up into multiple address and placed into DEEP DEEP cold storage.

This story doesn't seem plausible.

It is just a story. It is not that Op is asking us for donation because he will kill himself over his lost BTC instead or anything.
This story maybe is hard to confirm but or believe in - but I can have positive effect on people. This is the way hackers might act in order to grab your digital assets.
After reading this stuff some people might get wiser about their bitcoin wallets.

I can't help but to wonder why you were so naive, if you had that much bitcoin, i'm sure you are aware of the risks, and security.  i keep everything on a dead server and move anything offline.  all of my passwords are 30+.

I never use one computer for "Everything"  I have several computers, and one server that is only used offline with a laptop, then transferred to my network.  my network and online systems are scanned daily.  I am a little over paranoid yes. but to date i have never had a problem as you have.  I do business personally or on a solo computer system that if were hacked would be board out of there minds.   I know a company that can help you but i'm not sure if there still in business, I will try to find out the information for you, and get back here.

time is of the essence!
if you encrypted your wallet with a strong password there's a good chance that hacker has not yet burt forced your password
quiclky go find a backup of your wallet and import it in blockchain.info and move your coins out of there!

My wallet encrypted,  but all my coins transfered to hackers address already.

Oh, then it is really very hard for you to recover your coins, you can make claims against that address, but I don't know that will it help you or not,
and thanks you shared that news so that the members remain aware about hackers of that type, in the future people will be safe from mathods of like that.

Why in the world would you store ALL your bitcoins in one address? I have several paper wallets with small amounts of coins distributed in many locations. I will never lose everything in one hack, because nothing is stored on my computer. I use a Trezor wallet for day to day stuff and there is very little money on there.

If this is true, then this is a tragedy that could have been prevented. NEVER store ALL your coins in one wallet. ^hmm^

Hacker's file https://mega.nz/#!CRZHmBSQ!WsKeUFKAkieEHZhAsLs8j6kWvcG0AoSgK1a0pRyoLO0
Do you even scan the file before you proceed with further action?

1. 13 days ago I got email from aignat@interactivebrokers.com
I checked the email address , that was NOT fake
https://i.gyazo.com/875f50c9f0898a8e29c410a06686fb3e.png
the original email https://i.gyazo.com/dc0556b4449bb81c368243b793d77772.png
How did the hacker managed to get your email?

Did you apply for consultant job or something with your email?

3.I'm pretty interested, So I accepted that job,and downloaded a .doc file to apply the job.
https://i.gyazo.com/6bb54deb24785b552a61944d0667c274.png

4.Then a woman call me from a blocked number and he asked me to read the presentation file.
so I downloaded a .PPS file (IB_cooperation_offer_presentation.zip)
It was some command line on my Mac when I open it.
I did not know it was virus.
https://i.gyazo.com/3d2f5226bc8554986434a21ae6f719e9.png
This is where you fall into their traps.

5. I told him I cannot open the file, so He asked me download some IBM Maas360 Secure Document Sharing Suite https://i.gyazo.com/bd3cf207c4c463fa4f4df9054367f207.png
Which file that can't be open? The .PPS file?
AFAIK, .PPS is a file extension for a slide show presentation file format used by Microsoft PowerPoint.

6.So I downloaded and installed that app file , then got this email https://i.gyazo.com/90a1f77eb5230e70bc74381e2daed00e.png
All my coins was transfered to hackers addresses , and blockchain files removed
This is why we don't simply install application offered by some shady stranger on the Internet.

Please help me if you can. I live in Vancouver, BC, how to contact cyber police ? or some security experts can help me here ?
Is it possible to get my coins back ?
I'm sorry for your loss, but it's nearly impossible to get your coins back, TBH.

Life sucks.

I just want to ask why is it that you not keep such large amounts of bitcoins (425!!) On a paper wallet or something???

Anyway... since the hacker knows your personal info maybe he's someone you know locally??

The sorrow is that the possibility of your coins returning is low. 😔

do you run a full node? I think If your wallet was encrypted then they sent it via rpc calls.

Yes, full node, but how can he removed all my blockchain files later?

Do you live your entire life on you Macbook, including doing your banking transactions?

You should also assess what information was lost with their access to your computer. Then take steps to ensure that you don't stand to lose anything else in addition to your coins.

You were the victim of a social engineering attack. It has taken them quite the effort to target you, so you most likely spread your information (email etc) around while indicating that you held bitcoin and litecoin.

Be very careful when people are making offers out of the blue. That is just not how the world works and most likely is and attempt to hack you. Next time, ignore it and find a local job or at a well known company through their website.

Hope you manage to keep everything else safe.

Storing all your coins in online wallet is not one of the safest practices. Especially with 425 BTC in your possession a Trezor or Keepkey hardware wallet is an absolute must and I mean it an absolute must. I am very very sorry for your loss as its a huge sum, but please from now on keep large amount of BTC in hardware wallets.

Seriously?  Huh  When you have $300k worth of coins on your computer, you don't just grant access to the first guy that sounds legit  Roll Eyes Surely if you have that kind of money you could've bought a $300 laptop just for your coins.
But I guess it could be that you're so rich that $300k is worth less than a handful of peanuts to you, that's why it never occurred to you that you might be at risk. That would be a little like me and the 0.04 BTC I have in my local wallet, I don't care about security because it's really no big deal if I lose it  Cheesy
Anyways hope you get your coins back.

That said, you should get i touch with Reptilia, he lost a MacBook with wallets on it a while back too. For commiseration, if nothing else.

This is clearly a phishing scam! If these are true, I guess there is no way for you to get back your coins unless the hacker decided to give them back to you. This is the disadvantage of no-charge back feature of bitcoin, even though the transaction was not initiated by the owner.

Exactly.
You kept such amounts of money - not on paper wallet, not in cold storage, not on a hardware wallet - just simply at hand, then you complain that somebody took the opportunity?
Simply said: who wouldn't try that? Sorry, it's a bad world out there, try to be safe next time.

PS. That amount of money would have just fixed my life....

There's nothing we can do to help you, but you at least can learn something from this incident.
You can report it to police, but i think they can't do much either way Sad

You should keep your bitcoin in very safe place, such as paper wallet, hardware wallet or 100% offline PC where theft can't steal it easily.
Also, i think it's quite easy to detect that email isn't legit because company's email should be more formal.

About reporting it to the police - it is interesting how if 300k in cash/USD was stolen from someone the police would definitely investigate as it is a very serious theft.  Why with crypoto's is there usually no investigation.  This seems like an amount of money for the FBI cybercrime division or something.  The crypto world is definitely the wild west at this point.

I love Bitcoin

100% OP's own fault. no one can help you from here. even bitcoins from wallets are not reversible. if by chance your paypal account got hacked then you can reverse your money. but with bitcoin you can't even ask for wallet owners for this because it is full anonymous and no one can know who stole your money.

That's why Bitcoin cannot be something serious. It won't become a currency, it won't become mainstream shit. The average people are too exposed and these people are 99,9999%. There is not protection, nothing.
In normal circumstances, you would get ALL the money back from a bank but unfortunately Bitcoin is not a bank, it's not regulated. It's a jungle full of scams, full of hackers, full of black market. The normal "Joe" is victim.

You cannot make any chargeback, you cannot make anything. You simply lost the funds. That's it. I know it's HARD to get over but you must; others lost millions in the same way; you lost aprox 300k. This is life. Someday you earn, other day you lose; up and down...

You have to learn something from that. Never keep too much in ANY e-currency; no wallet, no cold shit wallet, no nothing ! Move the money to banks once you hit a "number".  And if you have too many, invest them in a local business, real estate. It's not an option to store too much money in a bank too. The interests are too low now.

BUT Bitcoin or any other  e-currency are not safe at all.

it does seem like the plot is being carefully studied and targeted bitcoin users, it just happen you got interested to the job and so you pick that very bad luckday.  Grin
reason why i don't trust getting files from https://mega.nz/ but instead i go directly to the developers site, if not then it sure is something suspicious .

Fishy story.  Can you prove ownership of 18wPAqgrHYBoNXrxV6w7kc8dVdTfkCCrFC by signing a message with your private key?

This will validate somewhat your story.  If you can't provide this then you never owned the bulk of these coins and your story is disproved.

with +400 btc sitting on my laptop i would at least consider to not use terrible OS like iOs or Windows, they are full of holes and possibilities for hackers

if not on cold storage, i would have my btc on a system running qubes os and open each pdf, ppt, etc on a dedicated virtual machine (yes, you can have a disposable virtual machine just to open a pdf)

btw, i'm sorry for what happened to you, damn bastards  Angry

1. 13 days ago I got email from aignat@interactivebrokers.com
I checked the email address , that was NOT fake
https://i.gyazo.com/875f50c9f0898a8e29c410a06686fb3e.png
the original email https://i.gyazo.com/dc0556b4449bb81c368243b793d77772.png

2.the attacker offered me a consultant job

https://i.gyazo.com/6d4938b4236d11749bcfbbbfd5d6d644.png

3.I'm pretty interested, So I accepted that job,and downloaded a .doc file to apply the job.

4.Then a woman call me from a blocked number and he asked me to read the presentation file.
so I downloaded a .PPS file (IB_cooperation_offer_presentation.zip)
It was some command line on my Mac when I open it.
I did not know it was virus.

6.So I downloaded and installed that app file , then got this email https://i.gyazo.com/90a1f77eb5230e70bc74381e2daed00e.png
All my coins was transfered to hackers addresses , and blockchain files removed

Fishy story.  Can you prove ownership of 18wPAqgrHYBoNXrxV6w7kc8dVdTfkCCrFC by signing a message with your private key?

This will validate somewhat your story.  If you can't provide this then you never owned the bulk of these coins and your story is disproved.
yes that will little bit help to prove that you are really sure that address is yours, but i think this is will not help you to get you bitcoin and litecoin back to your wallet.  feel sad for your losing.

the funds will surely go to a Bitcoin launderer website and done...

this is not the beauty of anything. it can happen to any of you and you won't think the same. 300K lost....
the normal people read and will read these kind of stories and they will not touch Bitcoin ever. of course, the hackers and morons will not be affected because they will always find a new e-currency to deal with... the affected ones will be the honest BTC users.

Damn that sucks, dude.  I'm so sorry.  I would police if I were you, and don't give up.  If you were on the phone they can trace call records and stuff, but you have to act fast before info is lost.

Good luck...

Sorry again for your loss:( OP verified he was running a full node with passphrase protected wallet and the loss itself was verified. This is the best argument for using a hardware wallet I have ever read.

Is it wrong or distasteful to promote my buddy here in this thread, he makes laser etched aluminium & steel etched wallets:

www.bitstashers.com - better than paper, wont smudge, tear or burn :-)

Btw, OP, seriously sorry for your loss.  That's s**t.

*edit* OP, mail mike@bitstashers.com & he'll etch you a bitcoin/litecoin wallet free of charge with shipping covered

Can't we do anything, I mean the OP should report all these moves to the police in order to find an IP or something relevant, but I know this is quite impossible, maybe the hacker is using TAILS and TOR plus VPN now with all those bitcoins in hand, still if I were the OP I would keep track of all the transactions of that address.

This hack sounds very similar to one that stole a bunch of BTC from another outfit a year or two ago. I'm digging in my mind trying to remember the details, but IIRC it involved a supposed media interview in which the target was emailed file(s) that they were supposed to fill out and return to the interviewer, planting malicious code on their laptop in the process.

As I recall, the target was a CIO of a bitcoin company, and the amount stolen was not huge but was 100 or more BTC. Just wild speculation, but I'm wondering if there might be a link to bitasset's thief and this or other crimes.

A captain of industry going by Reptilia or some such on this forum. An unencrypted MacBook. Allegedly stolen from a sauna during a "Supernode Summit" he organized [lol].

do you run a full node? I think If your wallet was encrypted then they sent it via rpc calls.

Yes, full node, but how can he removed all my blockchain files later?

Do you live your entire life on you Macbook, including doing your banking transactions?

You should also assess what information was lost with their access to your computer. Then take steps to ensure that you don't stand to lose anything else in addition to your coins.

People should be treating their computer with a wallet or even day trading off the internet as much as possible.  My banking computer is only connected to do transactions.  I have another one for trading.  You dont need a fancy computer for your bank, just no surfing and no emails.

I honestly think that if you go to the RCMP they will just tell you nothing they can do. They are so over run with the Revenue Canada tax scam and other scammers to really look into a bitcoin related issue. Depending on who you talk to it could even become a issue for you having so much money there, they will ask for all the paper work for 10K plus transfers and documentation. I dont know if its worth going down that road but its your call and it is a big amount to figure out.

We had guys that used to do that here. They would show you a fake invoice and say they accidently got double from the warehouse and where wondering if you needed speakers. Turns out people would overpay thinking they where getting something hot.
They made good money doing this and it was not criminal.

So sorry for your loss, People need to be more careful about .doc files. there are a lot of nasty exploit builders out there now for these types of things.

I will have a look at all the files you have uploaded. I will attempt to see what type of virus was used against your system,

Chances are its going to be some type of backdoor or botnet that was used.

Just wondering why you would have that amount of btc on tap in one wallet thought?
Paper wallet cold storage or hardware wallet would of been highly advisable

Yes, you should keep your computer system safe on which you have installed your wallet. Keep it save strong password and install anit-virus
and internet security tools on it so that it cannot be hacked easily.
You can use mobile wallet instead of desktop wallet to be more safe.

This is clearly a phishing scam! If these are true, I guess there is no way for you to get back your coins unless the hacker decided to give them back to you. This is the disadvantage of no-charge back feature of bitcoin, even though the transaction was not initiated by the owner.

I think its a exe file too ,phishing + exe, fake software, After you download the software it will.automaticaly install in your computer, the software contains keylogger, It can remove by manually uninstalling it. I heard a news about it

for phishing you just need to be careful not to fill email and password on unknown sites and a different view or a different url address. it could be flagged if it is a phishing site or not.
but for keylogger or malware Sometimes antivirus did not detect

That is worst man that you are hacked and indeed there are now a lot of scammers here and that is quite bad and the reason is that Bitcoin is getting more popular.

...and how important it is to treat Bitcoin and any other e-currencies as they are. a tool to make cash but to not store in them. once you hit a "number", you have to withdraw fast to your bank(s).

OP have you mentioned to anyone that you have that kind of digital money? 425 Bitcoins and 40 000 Litecoins are a huge amount of cash. Maybe you have told a close friend or a family member because if they knew your full name telephone number job and address it must have been someone in your circle. I don't think it's a random attack someone must have known these coins belonged to you. If you have any doubts contact the local police and ask if they can investigate a possible scammer friend of yours.

Well I wouldn't say that, that is pretty elitist bullshit and we can't ever expect a mainstream adoption with that sort of mindset. Was his security weak? Yes. Should this be expected? No, wallets should start forcing an encryption at start. A high amount of coins should never be stored in one place and hardware wallets should be used but merely moving from weaker to stronger hands? No, the thief still is a scumbag he is not better in anyway, we do not know their security methods, all we know is they are a lowlife.

That's hilarious. Bitcoin is about freedoms, and you're telling me that "wallets should start forcing an encryption at start." If OP wanted to be safe & follow a bunch of made-up rules, he would've stuck to legacy finance.

that's why BTC will never be "mainstream" but a very, very small niche. The normal persons will never use it because there is NO reason to do it. imagine that this thing would happen with your bank account. you will have the money back in matter of days; same with a debit/credit card. the normal people need the peace of the mind because not everybody is a a computer geek.

you need to focus on your business, life and not how to secure a fking computer which anyway it cannot be safe 100%. what should an average person do? reading all the news regarding to cyber security and then creating code lines and to modify the windows kernel? WTF?! Smiley

well i guess it mostly depends on if you download the safe torrents from safe torrent websites or you just download it from anywhere from the interet, the key is to be safe

besides that i must admit that i am sorry for your loss, just try to use a cold storage for your funds next time such as trezor wallet or something like that, thats the only way i can think of

Its not a keylogger as such..

I have downloaded all the files uploaded. and done some digging on them

The word document is a custom exploit.  They have used this to build it but they have re-coded it so the AV was unable to detect it..

http://blog.checkpoint.com/2015/07/21/one-click-office-exploit-introducing-the-office-exploit-builder/

I have submitted the virus to Virus Total.  They will distribute the findings to over 50+ av companies for them to update there virus definition lists.

Though I can't help you get your coins back, You should feel good that your post will help 10000's of other be protected from this custom exploit as the AV companies will update there lists to cover there re-coded exploit.

If I was you I would backup all your data then Dban your hard drive to remove it. then reinstall the OS and data.

As I am sure you will not be able to remove this by any other method dew to the rootkit it installs Ring 3.

Let me know if you need any more advice or help.

that's why BTC will never be "mainstream" but a very, very small niche. The normal persons will never use it because there is NO reason to do it. imagine that this thing would happen with your bank account. you will have the money back in matter of days; same with a debit/credit card. the normal people need the peace of the mind because not everybody is a a computer geek.

Cash will never be "mainstream". Someone steals your cash and you can't get it back. It's just too geeky. Normal people can't use it.

You do understand that most people wouldn't think of carrying around a quarter of a million dollars (in cash) in their pocket, correct?
That there are disruptive technologies such as banks and debit cards, which were invented specifically to avoid such dangerous idiocy?

Granny knows enough not to carry a quarter of a million dollars in her purse.
Junior wouldn't whip out a quarter of a million when he scores some cheap crank.
And yet [purportedly] tech savvy crypto enthusiasts keep *more* than a quarter of a million on the MacBook they use to score rock in the projects at 3 in the morning browse the web & download malware.

This is clearly a phishing scam! If these are true, I guess there is no way for you to get back your coins unless the hacker decided to give them back to you. This is the disadvantage of no-charge back feature of bitcoin, even though the transaction was not initiated by the owner.

that's right,no way to get his bitcoin back, phising still become favorite way for hacker or scammer to stole our privacy and bitcoin, this is should be a big warn for us,do not trust to unknown people, and dont download any suspicious file.

because phishing easiest to make. you just need a script and hosting. may need to bulk email. you can make a phishing site.
it's easier than you hacked by other means

I don’t think it’s possible to retrieve or get back any lost bitcoin. Once you sent any of your bitcoins, there is no way that you can get it back, because bitcoin does not have a feature like charge back or whatever you might call it

I am getting a lot of phishing emails too and the scammers are getting very smart with their scamming tricks. I don't suggest downloading anything on your main machine even from a reputable source. If you need to download stuff so badly use a different computer or a live Linux distro.

...

I too don’t think there is anything like cyber police, or do you mean to say just - police? Maybe that will be a good idea. But, come to think of it, how will it sound if you should go to the police and say “I am making a report because I got hacked and lost my bitcoins” eehm, that might sound crazy or weird. So, I don’t think you can do anything, maybe do what others said, by letting it go. It is a price for being careless. For all others a lesson.

What i feel from reading the whole story is that the intruder was someone who was near to you , who knew that you were related to crypto-currency .
Is there any one like friend who talks about BTC or whom you have shown your BTC.
Try finding and thinking on it.

1. 13 days ago I got email from aignat@interactivebrokers.com
I checked the email address , that was NOT fake

4.Then a woman call me from a blocked number and he asked me to read the presentation file.
so I downloaded a .PPS file (IB_cooperation_offer_presentation.zip)
It was some command line on my Mac when I open it.
I did not know it was virus.

6.So I downloaded and installed that app file , then got this email https://i.gyazo.com/90a1f77eb5230e70bc74381e2daed00e.png
All my coins was transfered to hackers addresses , and blockchain files removed

Please help me if you can. I live in Vancouver, BC, how to contact cyber police ? or some security experts can help me here ?
Is it possible to get my coins back ?

There's a lesson in here. DON'T store all of your coins iin one place.

I'd suggest (if you haven't already) to check your links on virustotal.com.

Try cold storage on Coinbase or paper wallets as an alternative, or even a hardware wallet for several dollars if your Bitcoins are that important to you.

Dependent on your counry, if we can track the person you can start legal proceedings against them.

This is probably the reason I can never make over 400 coins.

You should never now be able toose that 3BTC though.
You may aswell use a paper wallet instead of an offline computer (unless said computer is quite old).
It may also be recommendedthat you keep a small amount (no more than 10%) in a HOT wallet incaseyou need it.

Yes I also do not reply to any person who provide me some offers in my emails, As I think at that time I have not shared my email with such a company or organization then why they contacted me, you also only respond to them from where you apply for job.

holy fucking shit 425 BTC and 39,612 LTC Shocked Shocked Shocked
oh my godness seriously 425 Bitcoin and 39,612 Litecoin, i might stop breathing if i lost that amount, firstly i feel sorry for your lose, well in my country there is no regualtion about bitcoin, thus, if you lost your bitcoin either by hacking or scamming, there is no way to get your bitcoin back
i hope you will find the solution
Losing 425 bitcoins is like loosing a whole lot of money like millions. That’s too much to loose, but I don’t know what suggestion to give. I don’t know if there is any way you can track the person. With the current price of bitcoin which is about $433+ per 1 bitcoin, you just lost about $180,000, omg, that’s too much.

holy fucking shit 425 BTC and 39,612 LTC Shocked Shocked Shocked
oh my godness seriously 425 Bitcoin and 39,612 Litecoin, i might stop breathing if i lost that amount, firstly i feel sorry for your lose, well in my country there is no regualtion about bitcoin, thus, if you lost your bitcoin either by hacking or scamming, there is no way to get your bitcoin back
i hope you will find the solution
Losing 425 bitcoins is like loosing a whole lot of money like millions. That’s too much to loose, but I don’t know what suggestion to give. I don’t know if there is any way you can track the person. With the current price of bitcoin which is about $433+ per 1 bitcoin, you just lost about $180,000, omg, that’s too much.

That is a lot of money. But i a fail to understand why you would  not store it on a trezor.

But back to the case

This is awful. But at the same time you should never download any unknown files and such to any computer that has anything sensitive at all on it. If somebody insists on you installing software, do it on a virtual machine, on a different computer xD

it is true you have to do some what investingation of what went wrong, but you told that you got hacked then i think it is your fault .

I know how you will be feeling , it is very hard to find out the hacker even if you find you can do nothing.

This is why I don’t like to respond to emails, or messages from unknown users or persons. Any message I receive, and it happens that I don’t know anything about the message, I simply delete them immediately, and also mark them as spam.
I don’t know why you will be receiving such strange codes, and you keep replying to the sender.
Yes I also do not reply to any person who provide me some offers in my emails, As I think at that time I have not shared my email with such a company or organization then why they contacted me, you also only respond to them from where you apply for job.

my only question is " why the fuck do i need a job while I am sitting on almost 300K USD ?(425 BTC + 30,000 LTC) " Smiley  I mean...it's not a fortune in USA or Canada or Europe but anyway...you can open a small local biz, you can do many things but not getting a....fk job  Huh Huh Grin

Yeah mate hackers are pretty smart with their schemes nowadays. I have gotten a lot of phishing emails too for a lot of websites I have accounts at. I sometimes wonder how they find my main email address and associated accounts as I am trying to limit its online exposure as much as possible for security reasons. And I don't know if hackers have gotten smarter or we have gotten more gullible but having a little common sense to stay away from obvious malicious attacks doesn't hurt either.

if it's too good to be true, then it probably is Smiley  . Normally, if you are sitting on 300K USD you would not be interested about an online offer.

that's why BTC will never be "mainstream" but a very, very small niche.

 Sad
Yes, it is much risky to keep a quarter of a million dollar in our purse, as at that time the world is going to be rich with scammers and thieves, we can carry a big amount only if we have a good security of some gunmen.

This example of bad security practices should serve as a warning to everyone with stored Bitcoins on their computers to make the effort to transfer their stash to cold storage like a paper wallet or a dedicated hardware wallet and don't use their main wallet on their daily work device be it a desktop a laptop or a smartphone. I only have hot wallets with small amounts of Bitcoin on my mobile devices and at the end of the week I am transferring everything I don't need to my cold storage so if someone manages to breach my system the damage would be very small anyways.

Like other people said, this scammer is someone who knows you...or I think the guy stalked you and researched you and then pulled a social engineering job.

Think about all the people who know you have a lot of btc.  And I mean A LOT!  I have at most had 30, and I thought that was a lot!  Think of any online friends and see if you can use trace the info- ip addresses, blockchain, and see if you can piece it together...

While it won't get you're btc back (it could, tho) you should consider filing a complaint with the feds.

That hacker knows you and maybe among your circle of friends online because hacker knows that you have that amount of BTC stashed somewhere. You may have been in his/their radar for quite sometime and he/they may have been following your online activities.

What I don’t know is if the person is still replying to his messages, if he does, maybe try to explain to him, and know whether he might consider sending back his bitcoins, though, that might be impossible. But sometime may work out to recover...

Let this be a lesson to everyone to keep your street smarts about you: why would somebody email you from a generic domain with a job offer without a good story? What is interactivebrokers.com anyway, does it have a homepage? haha... You downloaded and opened a lot of stuff through email, you kind of deserve it. At least you checked if the email was spoofed. Better luck next time.

I did not know how they know my personal information.  and I did not get any warning when I download or open files.
probably you post your personal information on your account, maybe facebook account or the others.

I wonder why did you just download and open the file without concerning about hackers. I mean, you have high amount of BTC, didn't you try to keep them save? Make high security, don't download or open files you don't know exactly.

next time I hope you will be more careful. sorry for your loss.

That's why it's much better to keep it to your self on how much Bitcoins do you have and you have a separate wallet to keep and put those idle Bitcoins to keep it safe. With 1 person knowing you have that amount of Bitcoin somewhere, they will be tempted to try and hack their way in your wallet. They may have even hired a good hacker to force their way in since they expect a lot of Bitcoins there.

first things first. You should be careful on the first place. Keep your computer secure and strong password for your PC and the wallet itself.
Do not share the password with your trusted friends also and not to write the password on the paper etc. Follow the basic rules of protection and you will see its almost impossible to hack.
We just get hacked and blame others without thinking our careless mistakes first.

It`s sad to hear what happen to you. I am sorry.
This is good example what not to do and why. Anyone can be a victim as I think number of people has good amount of Bitcoins stored in their computer which is used for "daily" work with emails and accessign Internet.
I would recommend to use tezor or even paper wallet.

I still don't get how the hackers managed to get his wallet password. Was he using Bitcoin Core or something else? It's pretty strange that they quickly managed to move funds, if the wallet was indeed encrypted, unless that .pps file he is talking about contained a keylogger or something? but he would have needed to type the password for them to get the log.
Did you type the password to your wallet after opening anything suspicious?

I just realised something!

If he sent email addresses it is possible to trace his IP.
It is then possible to contact his internet provider and disable his internet.
Ask first before putting a requrest with hs internet provider (he may want to return your coins rather than being thrown offline).

There are always shitty apps out there, and not everyone is intent on making their money through an honest day's work.

If you ever store your Bitcoin on a PC (or even an online wallet), try to do it on a fresh PC. That way there will be basically nothing at risk.

Or at the very least, don't visit anything that could be remotely sketchy on your login/storage PC. Try to keep it shut down as much as possible.

Seems to be quite a few hacks on bitcoin wallets the last few days, I wonder if its just coincidence that we are hearing about it at the same time or if its being orchestrated by the same person? Either way its very unfortunate to lose so much money to some scum bag.

it's so frustrating because you cannot make any chargeback. these types of incidents are making the normal people to stay away of any e-currency, including BTC.

well 10 thousand dollars is not a small amount of money to be honest and i think that it is a pretty big loss too that would significantly change my life in my opinion

im sorry about your loss, thats a vast amount of money and i would definitely be really sad if i have lost that much money just because of some kind of a hack, i wish you will somehow get it back

425 btc! Holy crap. That's a lot of money.

I'm really sorry man, that's terrible.

Also sorry, but the police will be just about useless here. It is hard enough to get them to do anything if something physical was stolen, but bitcoin, they won't even spend 15 minutes on, even if it is 100,000's of dollars. Not trying to be a douche but just realistic.  If there is a 'cyber police' in Canada is probably about 3 or 4 guys actually investigating crimes and they'd only be servicing large companies, not individuals.

I'm pretty sure this is labled as a civil matter in canada. I bought a bunch of speakers off of the back of a van once. The police were almost laughing at me when I called to report that i've been scammed.  Roll Eyes

Haha I fell for that one like 15 years ago when I was dumb and young. I wonder if its the same scam or even the same guys.

If the folks who just accidentally sent 291 BTC as a mining fee don't come forward (there's some reason to believe it was a mixing service, and thus may have been criminals involved who won't want to come forward), maybe some of the 291 BTC can be allocated to folks like in the OP here. (The Coindesk article indicated the miners involved were offering to donate at least some of it, so why not for something like this?)

(For those who didn't see it... https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1451924.0)

I just read the whole thread and as far as I can tell you never told us what wallet you were using.

I would really like to know.

I hope somehow the bad guys get caught.

WOW that is a lot of money and I am sad for your loss. I got hacked but for not so much, was just a few bitcoin at the time but still ti was a lot for me, especially when I worked so hard. I never open weird phishing mails and on fb and skype people are trying to hack all the time. So be very careful in the future not to open strange mails.
