How stupid is this service or exchanger did they really keeped 120K bitcoins ONLINE? Why not use hardware wallets or paperwallets for a such high sum of money i got the feeling they just try to run away and steal money
Answer from Bitfinex: We don't use cold storage for bitcoin, since our implementation with bitgo we've used segregated customer wallets so that each user has their own bitcoin wallet. So, no cold wallet, no reserves, no nothing. Speachless LOL Of course, it doesn't say about their bank account where all their cash is stored That sucks big time. It's ok to keep separate wallets for each user, but what's the point if all of them are online? If the system gets compromised, all online wallets can be drained. Most deposits should be kept in cold wallets with a strict personalized access.

This is very bad what's happening today, bitcoin price drops down.
Bitcoin is very good for trading but as you see, it's distinguish feature from other type of currencies is that it's anonym and hard to find sender and reciever's identify. It's both very good and very bad property of bitcoin. The person who has much bitcoin and is mining it's half or over, can control it's price but I hope bitcoin's price will go higher in one month.

Is Bitfinex planning to pay their customers? I have been looking around online but I see no mention of them paying back their customers. This is unacceptable. They should go after the hacker, sell assets to pay customer funds and he charged of tort law. I am sure they will be found negligent in one way or another. They are like a bank holding customer funds. Their security should be excellent.

In the coindesk article it is mentioned that some of their users have had their bitcoins stolen which means that not users are affected? I have a feeling that because of the bitfinex shutdown the bitcoin price has dropped to $555 currently and with this trend the price is going to fall probably to $400 very soon. How much we need a free and trusted exchange

Well, just like any other exchanges claiming to be 'hacked', of course they will release a statement in a few hours on how are they going to approach the scenario. And yes, they would be charged based on their negligence in terms of security on their platform. And surely, many users who were affected by the hack would file lawsuits and complaints towards the company. A hack like this should be very unlikely in the current times, seeing that many hacks have already took place on the previous years. They should have learned a valuable lesson in terms of security and such.

they probably walked off with the funds themselves....multisig wallets my ass..they never multisig'd anything or the funds would be there
I don't think so. I very much doubt Bitfinex is directly responsible, because indeed they never used multisig - BitGo did, and they did it in a ludicrously negligent way. BitGo (claims they) can't access the user's private keys, but they do control the browser-based signing code the users run. BitGo (or anyone who has access to their servers) can serve malicious code to steal the client's keys, giving them the 2 of 3 keys needed to steal the money. This would also explain why some user's wallets haven't been touched - they can only steal from users who logged in using the malicious code. I'll bet you bitcoins to blueberries that's how it went down. Bitgo no safe as they using 3rd party This is a bad news to bitcoin community not only it will bring bad publicity but also fear to newbies and to potential bitcoin users. This will lead to the price decrease as consumers will shift to other cryptocurrency due to that alarming event. With this regard let us all make some move to promote bitcoin to non users to increase the bitcoin population and put bitcoins value back to where it was at 700$.

Guys I've found some slack group they are preparing some kind of petition, you can find them here - bitpetition.herokuapp.comWe, the undersigned customers as the main creditors of the cryptocurrency trading platform bitfinex.com, demand to immediately provide all the information about the state of affairs on the exchange. Also, we strongly expect bitfinex.com to present the confirmation of the damage, and the conditions and timetable for the return of customer funds. We require that this process and all the actions of the platform were open and transparent. We are willing to contribute in any possible way to recover the funds and hope for the best resolution for all parties. However, in case of failure to meet these demands, we will file a class action lawsuit against bitfinex.com. Sounds reasonable to me
