Because it is an easy form of populism.  In the end they are just trying to get votes. Looking back in history we see that socialism is not working. Taking private ownership away and forcing everybody to be the same, makes people lazy. It is attractive to get money from the rich people.

No idea about socialism and according to google it is a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.

Maybe because they still believed that it is the key or maybe a way to atleast alleviate everyone from poverty.  If the production, distribution, and exchange is owned by the people many will benefits.  No more hunger.  Everyone will have a comfortable life.  There would be equality.  And speaking of equality, that is not a good thing for the greedy people.  People who wants fame.  People who wants all the richness of the earth.  As long as there are people like this, this would not take effect.  Thus, it will not work.

I live in Serbia and currently we're in a transition from socialism to capitalism and when I ask people that were living back in the '80s they said they wouldn't be going back and because of Tito, we're living shitty as we are today. Also, Serbia isn't considered a socialist country but we have free healthcare , school and collegde (if you have good marks and do the test, before enrolling in college, good). So why do some people force socialism if it always ends up with communism and totalitarianism and most of people who lived through it, wouldn't go back (also, there is some russian guy on youtube that talking about capitalism and socialism and why he left the socialist Russia).
