speaking of a failing riser...i have one that i fixed last night (it was from 2013-2014 mining days)..

the symptom was, the card is detected (windows 7 64bit), but when it started mining the driver crashed, and that specific card will not mine like the others..

in troubleshooting:
    usb 3.0 wire - good
power connections of riser to PSU and GPU to PSU - good
plug a good card - failed too
plug the card with issue directly to motherboard - it runs fine.

solution:
i removed the cover underneath the riser, there was no burn..it was the white stuff solidified along the soldered parts of the riser, i think it was from the soldering paste used in manufacturing those risers (must be creating shorts)...i just used a fine steel brush and brushed those white stuff away and everything is fine again.

That stuff is most likely soldering flux.

http://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/170941/why-do-we-need-to-remove-flux-from-circuit-boards

i made a typo error btw, i mean "and that specific card will not mine unlike the others.."

anyway...just pointing out a place where we can look for troubles

WOW!   Bitcoin Drop from $1066 to $931 in last hour and now back up to $980 due to China blocking all withdrawals in 2 exchanges.

and now the danger of centralization becomes more easy to see.

Would love to see China seize and destroy all gear in China   would make for a really interesting year.

That would really make for a interesting year!!

Well gulf power finally came out of the closet and said they want to move rates up to 20c kWh so they can pay for food stamp users power bill
That's probably going to kill my mining days for awhile

Ouch!  Sorry to hear that.

It seems like bitcoin is starting trend upwards a bit, the china news is having less and less of a impact on the price.  The news was a pretty big bomb to drop on people, next thing will be if they decide to start locking down accounts or seize btc from people they think are breaking the laws.  Since the begging of the year china keeps dropping negative news, but they can't seem derail the price train.

Hey if they did seize and destroy all the farms, imagine how crazy profit would get.  Also how would you even go about doing such a thing, fill up a couple of barges then light it on fire in the ocean? lmao

Looks like India picking up pace on Bitcoin recently too -- imagine Chinese farms migrating overseas -- this will also boost up major ISP and hosting - esp the ones with cheap power.

In case Bitcoin would become complicated for chinese people, where do you guys thinks they will invest ? They surely won't stop trying to send their money outside China, and BTC in not the only way.
Maybe it could be interesting to speculate about the others Alts chinese people would use instead of Bitcoin if laws become too hard. Even if the Alts would follow shortly.

NB : thanks all for the advices about my little GPU problem, I'm going to check this week end. And thanks to Arielbit and Lonerangir for the interesting info about faulty risers and soldering flux.

I would like to come back to discuss with all of you about the pools.

I'm currently only eth mining , and I've split my rigs between Ethermine and Dwarfpool.
I made some maths, and I got bad news : I'm loosing about 10% profit from what is expected with coinwarz.

About Ethermine, they always consider lower hashrate tha reported. They have the good reported hashrate , as shown in claymore, but the effective current hashrate is lower and profit reduced..

About Dwarfpool, their "Current approx.speed" is right, but "Earning in last 24 hours " is always 10% to 20% lower than expected from coinwarz.

I suggest everybody check his pools (if it's not already done).
Is there any ETH pool that pay as expected from the mining calculators ?

I use ethpool.org. I like that they pay uncles and every once in a while. You can hit. Big blocks. 8 or 9 coins vs 5.

All pool calculators tend to be far off since they go short term.  Not long term so they are not accurate.

I have been using Ethermine.  It says that It pays uncles, yet I have never seen one.  I really like the ability to change the payout rate, but I am going to switch back to Ethpool.

500 mh

Maybe 750 mh

You hit an entire block. So you have to wait a while to get one.

I hit about six big block/uncles like 8 or 9 coins vs 5.

For the ones who continue mining BTC :
I would like to ask what pools are you now all using ? as Kano is difficult to handle currently..

Thx I'm giving a try !

How long do you generally wait for a block with your hashrate ?
Not sure to understand your last sentence. With the big blocks you hit, did the average profit went higher than expected in the long term ?

After realizing I still had a couple of H81 Pro BTC boards and a couple of aluminum frames I built but never used from a couple of years ago, I decided to put a GPU rig together to play with.  Bought 6 MSI RX470 Gaming cards and got it all together today.  Spent most of the day updating to Windows 10 and am now trying to get the drivers setup for the cards.  I remember seeing several posts on here to not use the latest Radeon drivers but now don't see it.  What version is recommended for those cards?  Will most likely just use the Claymore GPU miner to start.  I may try SimpleMining once I get a USB drive to put it on.

Phil,

Can you refresh my memory on which pin on the power cable to poke the paperclip to auto power a EVGA-G2-1300.

Googled it but I dont see examples for 48pin bracket like what the EVGA uses.

I am tempted to poke the 4th and 5th pins but just wanted to get expert advise before doing it.

Thanks

I will take a look.

Overclock.net has the pinout for the evga 1000 g2. Which is the same as the evga 1300 g2

I am on my iPad which sucks for posting the exact link

thanks Phil.

Using the pin hole not used as the marker, the pins 15 and 16 should be the correct ones.

I should really get a proper jump kit for this but for now the quick and dirty way will sufficient for testing purposes.

NOTE: working great, tested with a fan

I have a question for the linux guys....

I installed CentOS on a computer with a Z87 intel chipset.  Can I take that hard drive and plug it into an AMD motherboard and expect it to work?  Am I better off reinstalling from scratch?  Is there a third way to do this?

I've heard it will work, but figured I'd run it past the people here.

well if you only have the linux hdd hooked up and keep the older os disconnected it should work.

my simplemining sticks and m2 ssd's work on every single intel board  gens 4,5,6,7  they are linux.

@ citronick

how did you install  your   pandaminer os

I made a macrium reflect usb 3.0 on a windows 10 pc

it boots  but I can not seem to get the  pandaminer os onto it.

any help is welcome.  I have a file from him on a down load  LDWosPhilip.rar   I do not seem to be able to image it or open it to get it on the stick I made with macrium

any help is welcome.  I have a file from him on a down load  LDWosPhilip.rar   I do not seem to be able to image it or open it to get it on the stick I made with macrium

after you create the macrium USB.

unrar the LDWosPhilip.rar into the USB (you can unrar the file into the root of the USB)

The rar file once unrar-ed is actually a 1GB partition file (that you will need to restore later)

Once you get the Panda boot up from USB Macrium.... at the windows lite system... select restore partition from macrium menu (in normal case this would be a backup windows system you created together with the macrium usb)

... so instead of restoring a windows 10 backup, you select the 1gb file you unrar-ed previously.

That will restore a linux system into the internal msata target.... once done... take out USB and reboot.

Eliovp's Linux will startup and ask if the system is a Pandaminer, select yes...

Then it will flash the 480m roms into Eliovp's highly sought after custom rom -- all done one-by-one automatically for each GPU.

Once done, reboot from Eliovp's linux menu .. and thats it.

Eliovp's system is a bit different from Tytanick, so you need to explore the many features like grouping, OC settings etc.

okay  lets  go slower.

I built the usb stick on a windows 10 machine that is not the pandaminer.

so  lets say I un.rar the file into the usb stick on a different win 10 machine.

walk the stick to the pandaminer   and boot   am I efff'd  because I did not do the build on the pandaminer?

I have a linux os in the pandaminer from simple mining on the msata.  I could put a blank msata in there.

I will get back in a bit.

I have a file from him on a down load  LDWosPhilip.rar   I do not seem to be able to image it or open it to get it on the stick I made with macrium

after you create the macrium USB.

unrar the LDWosPhilip.rar into the USB (you can unrar the file into the root of the USB)

I will get back in a bit.

building the macrium USB on a different Windows machine is fine - its suppose to be like that.

the macrium usb stick is suppose to be the emergency backup / restore when something goes wrong on Windows.

Eliovp is just using the macrium method to put his own partition (ie Eliovp's mining program on Linux).

Yea, save your smOS msata, and put a blank msata before you do the restore.
