Weird, I still have the same issue after another fresh windows install (10 instead of7) , a different driver , and a different riser ...
The card hashrate continue decreasing , and I still can't see her temperature through Claymore.
EDIT : almost fixed it returning to stock bios. Not maximum hashrate but better than 8mh/s ! I have now 20m/s on stock bios RX470 , but still can't get temperature in claymore, nor clock controls.

It's got to be thermal throttling.

Maybe you've done all this....Try using Afterburner or watttool and leave the CMD line setting off. Make sure the max temp is 90 or so. Make sure the actual voltage, as reported by GPUz is 0.97-0.99v. Have the fan run at 70 -80%. Limit the clock rate to 1125MHz.

What is its position on the MB? I had a hot card I had to move to the outside.

Basically sounds like a failing card.

Or a failing mobo.

Or a falling psu.

or a failing riser.

Risers have caps. And caps are like a rechargeable battery if they are failing they can cause your symptom.

I lose track of the inventory I sell.  I know I sold 5 xfx 1 fan short 470s.  They were flawless.

I also sold quite a few blower style cards to you. Sapphire if I recall.   They were weird at times.  Is it one of them?

I just seen on the news today as the press was reporting in the white house with President Trump and a bunch of CEOs of several corporations; the CEO of Intel Mr. Krzanich announced the building of a manufacturing plant in Arizona for the production of 7nm chips.  I would expect the usage in GPUs, but I am wondering if someone is thinking that these may be used for mining?

nice catch..  I will be interested to see how well the chips do.

my thoughts at for asic mining  we stay at this size 14/16  maybe a second better chip by by bitmain.  in summer 2018

2020  a 10nm 
2022 a better 10nm


2025 a 7nm
2028 a better 7nm   and at this point we would be done for shrinkage of chips.

Just received a new RX 480 sapphire nitro 4gb from newegg.

They changed the design and removed features.

No led lighting just a chrome sapphire badge now

No dual bios switch, so single bios now.

Samsung vram

The card default core clock is higher now at 1326 mhz

I looked in the bios and it looks nearly identical to rx 470 bios but is different from the previous rx 480 4gb bios.  What I mean is that in the bios you see straps for 2 types of memory (hynix and elpida) but in my 480 it had one type of memory strap only (samsung).  The memory types that show up...it doesn't look like the bios editor is showing the samsung or sapphire has hidden the samsung memory straps to prevent bios modding.

I can't recommend the 4gb 480 for now, originally got it over the 470 due to that it was the same price.  Go for the 470s if you buy cards, it makes no sense they would change the bios like this.

Noob mistake I had the wrong adapter, I just grabbed the correct bios modded it in bios editor and its up and running perfectly.

If I could see what good a low volt stock clock bios mod does I would consider doing one with low power in mind more then over lock.

I use 2 "low energy" custom roms from Eliovp.
RX480s (ETH-29MH-low-energy) and R9-Nanos (-100mV rom)
Working very well, and saves me on power bill.

Although I have access to hydro power at my ISP in Labrador/Crytoboreas for my other BTC farm.... I cannot send my open cage rigs over because its not secured in a suitable chassis. The Pandaminer was a good solution but that's another story all together.

Since having the modded roms, I dont mess with Afterburner, Wattman etc. anymore.
And since moving my rigs to smOS Linux -- the custom roms were perfect marriage since no fiddling with Windows 10, GPU utilities, etc. And smOS will use use native AMD settings with the custom roms at Linux/Ubuntu/hardware level.

If you are not comfortable with modded roms, you can still use Afterburner etc to control the wattages. Ideally, you should try one of Eliovp's custom rom on 1 rig to compare notes. You can always change back to stock roms if unsatisfied.

For me, I took the scary jump to custom roms ever-since I saw my first power bill during the ETH craze a year ago....

I'm looking into modifying my own custom ROMs, but it's not for the faint of heart.  Need to know the ROM layout, know which parameters to modify, and in the case of adding a negative voltage offset, know where in the ROM to add the offset.  After all that, you have to regenerate the checksum of the file.  

All possible, but takes a bit of a curve to figure out how to execute.  

There seems to be a minority of people that are in the know, and they don't openly share how to do it.  You can pay for customization, or figure it out on your own, or settle for what they openly share.  I can't blame them, when it comes down to it, but I don't have to like it  

I, too, use the LowEnergy ROM for the reference 480s I own, but I'd like to add a negative offset to some of my other "aftermarket" cards (480s and 470s) so I can move to a 6-card linux rig, and not have to deal with "windows", and enjoy lower energy usage.

I made a mistake had the wrong adapter.  For some reason the adapter number in atiflash is different from my miner.  I modded it and it is working fine.

I make simple mods, I copy over the memory straps which gives me a nice boost in speed on eth and very mild bump in monero.  Then I use afterburner to drop the voltage and that gives me good results, a hard coded voltage mod in the bios would reduce it further but this method is rock stable and imo good enough.

Also I run full headless with no hdmi plugs and gpus on the pci x1 ports I can't OC the memory on those cards via software.  So I bump the memory speed in the bios to what I want (1900mhz) and it runs at said speed.

That's probably going to kill my mining days for awhile

It seems like bitcoin is starting trend upwards a bit, the china news is having less and less of a impact on the price.  The news was a pretty big bomb to drop on people, next thing will be if they decide to start locking down accounts or seize btc from people they think are breaking the laws.  Since the begging of the year china keeps dropping negative news, but they can't seem derail the price train.

Hey if they did seize and destroy all the farms, imagine how crazy profit would get.  Also how would you even go about doing such a thing, fill up a couple of barges then light it on fire in the ocean? lmao

Looks like India picking up pace on Bitcoin recently too -- imagine Chinese farms migrating overseas -- this will also boost up major ISP and hosting - esp the ones with cheap power.

speaking of a failing riser...i have one that i fixed last night (it was from 2013-2014 mining days)..

the symptom was, the card is detected (windows 7 64bit), but when it started mining the driver crashed, and that specific card will not mine like the others..

in troubleshooting:
    usb 3.0 wire - good
    power connections of riser to PSU and GPU to PSU - good
    plug a good card - failed too
    plug the card with issue directly to motherboard - it runs fine.

solution:
    i removed the cover underneath the riser, there was no burn..it was the white stuff solidified along the soldered parts of the riser, i think it was from the soldering paste used in manufacturing those risers (must be creating shorts)...i just used a fine steel brush and brushed those white stuff away and everything is fine again.

speaking of a failing riser...i have one that i fixed last night (it was from 2013-2014 mining days)..

the symptom was, the card is detected (windows 7 64bit), but when it started mining the driver crashed, and that specific card will not mine like the others..

That stuff is most likely soldering flux.
