BTER is the only one I've actually heard people use before but I have no clue if its a scam or not now a days, so please go check things out before going there,

I think that was Bill Still. He used to make videos on the daily about Quarkcoin in his Youtube channel. He hasn't made any anymore, I think not even about crypto in general. A lot of bullshit here. Quark has a Forum busier than many and the node was updated in June of this year.

Like Spoetnik says - the coin was/is very innovative in it's day - mainly down to the memory intensive rolling POW algos but also, the block frequency was very fast (30s) - maybe the fastest at that time.
I would say that in 2013 it was in the same company as Namecoin, LTC, PPC, NXT for innovation of the original Bitcoin source and spawned loads of clones (like Frozen). It was also in the top 10 cap for a long time. Like all ASIC/GPU resistant POW coins I think it got a bad rep for a lot of hashes coming from bot farms (but Hey! That doesn't hold back coins like Monero) and also a lot of people got burned during the 2013 P&D - but as a coin, project etc - it's a sleeper and a legend.

On the price - it pumped to 27000+ sats early 2013 before a long winding down to 700 sats but the price has been stable for ages and ages.

Over the years it's been a lucky coin for me, both mining and trading!
